Jane Smith’s life has been nothing but misery. Abandoned as an infant in the Northern forests, she grew up in the city’s foster care system—unloved, unwanted, and utterly alone. By the time she turns twenty, she’s barely scraping by, working tirelessly just to survive.
That is, until the night she is abducted by small, peculiar aliens. Taken to the kingdom of Ornath, Jane learns of a prophecy that binds her fate to Prince Jion and the looming war against the Tenebrae, a ruthless race of humanoids bent on draining entire planets of their light.
Preparing for a marriage she never wanted, Jane struggles to make sense of her place in the universe, the goddess Amantius, and the enigmatic power of Source Light—a force beyond her understanding. But as the war escalates, she faces an even more unsettling she may be falling for Glade, Jion’s arrogant and reckless younger brother.
A story of fate, choice, and defiance, Smoke and Stars is a thrilling sci-fi romantasy about forging one’s own destiny in a universe ruled by gods, kings, and monsters.
I received an arc for smoke and stars by m.m marsden!
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book since it’s not released yet and not many people have had the chance to read it yet.. but i actually really enjoyed this story!
I really enjoyed Jane, she is just like any normal girl and you definitely know how’s she feeling, i feel like we’ve all been in her shoes before!
The connection she has with Glade feels so real and the forbidden romance is always a favourite of mine, and the yearning was written well in this story!
This world building was great and i loved the whole concept with the Source lights and the kinds and gods and monsters! it was an easy read and i can’t wait to continue this story and see what happens next!
4.25 I was drawn into the premise of this book from the first time I saw M.M. Marsden talk about it on Tiktok. Jane is a relatable FMC. Being taken away from everything that you know - even if it has never felt right. Jane has a lot to deal with, learn and accept and we can feel that along with her. The magic system is different from other books I have read, and I feel that we have only scratched the surface of it. I look forward to learning more about it, along with the different mythical creatures, and unique planets in the books to come. The world that M.M. Marsden has a built is magical and dreamy, so very different from Earth, yet you can still feel the tension, the fight to survive is there. The slow burn forbidden tension paced as to almost be painful, kept me page turning. If this first book is anything to go by, I think we are in for some bigger trials, harder battles, stronger emotions and bigger consequences. Thank you M.M. Marsden for the opportunity to read your book early as an ARC!
Arc I was so excited to receive a copy of this book, I was attracted to the stunning cover! I was looking forward to reading something a little bit different and man, this was so much more than what I expected! If you love magical worlds with magical creatures but also crave some sci-fi this is your book! Jane has lived a very lonely life with no family and one night has been abducted by aliens. This world is so much more than she expects and more than what the reader expects. A wonderful debut novel by M.M Marsden, I can't wait for more!
I enjoyed this book. I felt that it was shorter then I wanted and there were moments I wish could have been explored more. I really enjoyed the world building as a whole, but it was more fantasy and less sci-fi then I expected. I did feel like some character dynamics felt rushed. I am excited for the next book and to see what happens next.
What a debut! I absolutely loved this book. The plot, the characters, the world building- it was all so enjoyable. I loved the sci-fi elements mixed into the Romantasy, it was different and so well done. I cannot wait for book 2. 10/10 recommend!
Let's take a moment to admire the artwork on the cover. One word. Stunning. Amazing on the bookshelf.
Need I say more? Kidding, let's get into how great of a novel this was.
The most captivating part of this book was the setting. The way Ornath, the different planets, and even the characters and how they were described were so intriguing, and it was nothing I'd ever read before. There are typically a lot of general descriptions used that feel copy-pasted in many fantasy novels, but I found that there was a lot of creativity in her characters and how they presented themselves. I loved learning about the history of their universe, especially since it gives you a lot of detail into why, what, and how everything came to be.
The characters were likeable, and I especially think the author did a great job at making a stark contrast between Jion and Glade. There are certain aspects of Jion that make you realize WHY he's not made to be with Jane without making you necessarily hate him.
Jion wants Jane to eventually "fit in" with the people of Ornath and how they behave in their society, which is the exact opposite of why Glade is so attracted to her! Glade likes how she's fiery and defiant, not afraid to be herself or be ashamed of where she grew up. Glade wants Jane for her, ALL OF HER.
Don't even get me started on the romance cause oh my god, my HEARTTT. It's not overwhelming, but you get enough to where it feels like YEARNING. The way tension is being built up between the two with passing moments or stolen glances, as a reader, you become so immersed that you can't help but root for them.
The action is well written and easy to follow; it's not one of those fantasy books where you're constantly flipping back and forth wondering who each person is and why it's relevant. There's enough to make it enjoyable and interesting to read to where you're not confused, making it perfect if you're just starting out in this genre.
There are lots of loose ends in this book that make you excited to read the second book. Although the book ends on a cliffhanger, it's one where you're content with how the book ends, but it still leaves you wanting more. I'm DYING to read the second book and to see how Jane develops with source light and how she's going to navigate Ornath and her blossoming relationship with Glade.
As a debut novel and the very first sci-fi book I've read, this was everything I could've asked for and more. If you're just getting into sci-fi/romantasy, I highly recommend (especially since her writing style is ADDICTING.) Thank you M.M. Marsden, for sending me this arc copy and helping me find a new passion for Sci-Fi!
I read my fair share of romantasy; in fact, it’s a genre I gravitate toward the most. However, there are many aspects of this genre that make me question why I love it, especially because it has me pulling out my hair in frustration most of the time.
So, here is why I will go to the ends of the earth for this book.
I was prepared to go to battle for the FMC, from the first chapter. Jane was introduced, abandoned as an infant, and grew up in the city’s foster care system. Yet, she has a strong aura! Her unfortunate start to life isn’t her whole personality. She knows how to stand up for herself, and for that I will stand with her. She stayed true to herself throughout the story. She’s a relatable character; she is strong when she needed to be and had moments of weakness and vulnerability, which she overcame. It felt incredibly refreshing to read.
The top-tier characters don't end with Jane. Jane learns of a prophecy that binds her fate with Prince Jion, who is honestly a sweetheart. He cares for his family and his people; he wants what’s best for Ornath. A great character, a seemingly great prospect for a husband and king, he has my vote. Being the firstborn, he has his life laid out for him. The king, who is an absolute menace, favours him over his brother Glade, which could cause some friction in their relationship. But because they are mature adults who care deeply for one another and just want what’s best for each other, there’s no tension. I love Prince Jion; I love Glade. I love their healthy relationship as siblings because it does not take away from the story; in fact, it adds to it and adds a little suspense. But you'll have to see for yourself.
Swinging back to the king, he is a menace; he is mean, stubborn, and everything you can imagine a cruel king to be, but we only get glimpses of it, so it’s not shoved into the readers' faces, and I loved that. Tell me, show me, but don’t take away from the story with it. The queen, a sweet, loving mother who wants what’s best for her children, and I’m here for it. We only get a glimpse of her, but she adds a lot to the story by giving the readers a stronger reason to also love the princes as much as she does.
I loved this story. It left me feeling cozy, despite the fact there were high stakes that had me on the edge of my seat. My review is definitely character-focused, because I loved the characters so much, but the story is great, too.
I highly recommend Smoke & Stars; it’s a quick read with short chapters and characters that will leave a lasting impression.

I received a free ARC of this book and have written my honest review below.
Smoke and Stars follows Jane, an orphan who is abducted to an alien planet and told she must marry the crown prince in order to save the universe. Despite her prophesied role in the fate of the universe, she finds herself falling for the prince's brother. This story is about her discovering her true identity and fighting against her forbidden attraction. I struggled to make it through this story, and I rate it 2 stars.
Likes: Honestly, the concept of world-eaters and a lost princess is a good one! I found myself frequently reminded of Bloom from the Winx Club, and I was intrigued to see what active role Jane would play in her story—especially as she discovered her own powers. I found I was most interested in the other planets and their inhabitants, and I wish they were highlighted more. Her relationship with the second prince is also enjoyable, and I especially appreciated the scenes where he's just being a good friend for her.
Dislikes: The characters feel juvenile and the interactions are cringey and heavy-handed. I also feel like the story beats are out of order, and the more interesting ones are glossed over or forgotten about (I'm hoping they'll be brought up again in the next book). Despite Jane's entire presence hinging on this all-important prophecy, we don't ACTUALLY hear what it is until 52% of the way through the book. Jane confuses me, because she seems simultaneously extremely okay with everything and then very upset about things that don't matter. "I'm forced to marry someone against my will? Okay, if you say it's my duty. You say earthlings are prone to aggression? How dare you!" As a whole, it feels like not that much happens outside of her romance with the second prince. I appreciate that this is a romantasy, but it would have been nice to have the B-plot go...anywhere. I think I'm mostly disappointed because I was expecting a sci-fi romantasy with a universe-sized plot, and it's more of a surface-level romantasy with a dash of sci-fi.
Ultimately, this book was difficult for me to read, but I do think it would appeal to particulary millenials who like to vibe-read romantasy. I'd consider recommending it to that specific demographic.
Smoke and Stars is such a fun mix of sci-fi and romantasy. It pulls you into a really cool world full of prophecy, power, and emotional moments. The story follows Jane, who ends up in a completely different world and quickly realizes she might be part of something much bigger than she ever expected.
What I liked most was the vibe of the book. It feels immersive but still really personal at the same time. Jane’s struggle with figuring out who she is and what she wants versus what’s expected of her makes the story feel relatable, even with all the fantasy elements, which I’m generally not usually a fan of.
The romance is definitely a highlight. It builds slowly and feels more emotional than dramatic, which makes it easy to get invested. It’s not over the top, just enough tension to keep you hooked and wanting to see what’s next.
The world building is also really interesting and impressive with unique ideas like Source Light and different powerful beings. Some parts feel familiar if you read a lot of this genre, but it still feels fresh enough to keep you engaged.
Overall, Smoke and Stars is a great pick if you like character driven fantasy with a bit of romance. Easy to get into and enjoyable all the way through.
Smoke & Stars is beautifully written! I really liked the magic system and the mix of sci-fi and romantasy. The characters were believable and the tension and slow burn 🔥 between the FMC and MMC was just right.
This latter half of the book really picks up speed once you have been introduced to the world and main characters and it was difficult to put it down! I only wish it had been a bit longer cause I definitely want to know more, which will likely be revealed in later instalments of the series. I liked the premise of whole worlds being attacked by the “big bad” it gave me Frieza from DBZ vibes (iykyk).
I really liked the forbidden love part story as well as Jane’s discovery of who she is within the context of the situation and new world she is thrust into as well as with her past.
The ending was perfect for book 1 of a series and leaves you wanting to read the next ASAP!
Also if you’re a dragon 🐉 book lover this is dragons but they are not the center of the book (but still a very enjoyable part of the story).
I was very impressed that this is a debut novel that was independently published! I think it will be well loved by many.
All I can say is—I cannot wait for Book 2, Ashes and Oaths! Oh my gosh!!!
This is my very first romantasy read in my entire reading life, and I have zero regrets. I honestly thought I’d struggle with it, but I didn’t at all!
The slow-burn romance? Ugh, I’m obsessed. The chemistry between Glade and Jane gave me so many butterflies. Book 1 was absolutely amazing, and it left me wanting so much more.
But it’s not just about the romance. I was genuinely impressed by the author, M.M. Marsden, for creating such a unique and intriguing concept—aliens actually existing, not just humans on Earth—without making the story feel cringe. It was executed so well!
I also loved how Jane’s “Light” is slowly unfolding. It makes me even more excited to see what’s coming next—will they be able to defeat the Tenebranian monsters and The Other?
I seriously need Book 2 ASAP because this story has been living rent-free in my mind for days. I can’t stop thinking about what will happen next!
This is a solid 5 stars for me—hands down.
Thank you, M.M. Marsden, for choosing me as one of your ARC readers!
I picked up Smoke & Stars for the pretty vibes and ended up fully invested. Like thinking about it when I wasn’t reading, staying up too late, emotionally involved… all of it.
The main character’s journey felt really real to me. Watching her figure out who she is and what she’s capable of, while everything around her is kind of falling apart?? It just hit. There’s that whole “meant for something bigger but also terrified of it” feeling that I loved.
The world is SO pretty. Everything feels soft and glowy and magical, but there’s still tension underneath it the whole time. It’s one of those books where you can just sink into the atmosphere.
And the romance… yeah. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s there in a way that makes everything more intense. The kind where you’re like “oh no… this is going to hurt me later isn’t it” 😅
Overall, I just really loved how this made me feel. It’s emotional, a little dreamy, a little chaotic, and super easy to get lost in. Definitely recommend if you’re into romantasy and strong female leads.
Now I just need the next book because I’m not done with this world yet
What truly stands out in this novel is the chemistry between Jane and Glade. Their connection feels incredibly natural and authentic, making every interaction meaningful. The slow-burn, forbidden romance is executed beautifully, filled with tension, longing, and an almost painful level of yearning that keeps you turning the pages. The emotional buildup is agonizing in the best way, making their dynamic one of the most compelling aspects of the story.
Beyond the romance, the world-building is rich and thoughtfully crafted. The concept of Source Light as a magical force adds depth and intrigue to the universe, while the intrigue of the goddess Amantius brings an added layer of mystery and divine influence. While the story leans more heavily into character development and establishing the world rather than constant action, it never feels dull. Instead, it lays a strong and promising foundation for what’s to come.
If the first installment is any indication, the rest of the series is sure to deliver even higher stakes, deeper emotion, and the action.
5/5 stars! A captivating sci-fi romantasy that kept me hooked!
Jane is barly surving her tough life on Eart when she's abducted one night walking home from work. She wakes up on Oranth, discovering she's the last daughter of Domus and is promised to Prince Jion. Forced to train with the younger prince Glade, their sessions spark intense forced proximity romance, electric banter, epic world building, and high-stakes adventure. The romance is well done with only a couple fade-to-black senes that are done so well! The yuring is top tier!
As Jane grows into a badass FMC with dragons and powers straight from the Godess herself she finds that she must defend all of humankind from the world destroying Tenebrae. The plot is incredible! The banter is TOP tier!
This is likely to be a series that is added to my GOD TEIR books (Throne of Glass, Spark of the Everflame vibes) This book was so much fun to read and I am HOOOKED!!! I CAN'T wait for book 2 in this series!!!
If you like Spark of the Everflame and Throne of Glass, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!!
Smoke and Stars is a novel that you will not want to put down. Jane, our protagonist, is likeable and relatable. She is strong, says what she is thinking and does not allow herself to be minimized. She is aware that she does not know it all and seeks to educate herself on her circumstances.
M.M. Marsden’s creativity is unmatched. The world building was done mindfully, slowly giving the reader a look into what life in Ornath is like. The mix of Sci-Fi and Romantasy is unique and refreshing.
The romance aspect was done thoughtfully, as a slow burn you see Jane and Glade build respect with each other. You can feel the partnership between Jane and Glade through the pages.
I am so excited to see what comes next in the Source of Light universe.
I didn’t expect to love Glade the way I did!! I need book 2 immediately the ending was beautiful but way too soon like girl we didn’t even get back home yet. Jane had great character development, usually FMC’s annoy me but this girl was open minded and grew, she has heart and that forbidden love got me. I like how it jumped right into it like she’s abducted in chapter 1 we jump right into this & I love that pace! The book gave us enough to get hooked because I feel satisfied but I have so many questions and there is so much to do! I also really like how there were Fae, Dragons, Mer people (Mermaids) I just know there are more to come and it was added in such a creative way. I cannot wait for the next book!
I received this as an ARC, and Smoke & Stars completely pulled me in.
This book feels like soft light and quiet moments—but underneath that is this deep, aching sense of yearning that just sits in your chest long after you put it down. It’s the kind of story that doesn’t need to be loud to hit hard.
The connection, the emotion, the way it builds… it all felt so genuine and consuming in the best way. I found myself just sitting in certain moments, not wanting to rush past them.
For a new author, M.M. Marsden created something really special here. This was love, light, and longing all wrapped into one—and I already know I’ll be thinking about it for a while.
Forbidden love. A prophecy. Gods and monsters. All the best ingredients for a sci-fi romantasy! Beautifully written story that explores hard choices, intriguing lands, and the tales that come with them! Jane's mundane life gets turned upside down when she's taken from earth and betrothed to a prince from a foreign world. But his younger brother, Glade, is the one she has to put up with - and I loved every second of it! As soon as I saw the cover, I knew it was gonna be an amazing read. I can't wait to see what happens in book 2!!
You know when the universe in the book is so comforting that you just want to be a part of it all? Yeah. That's exactly what this book made me feel. The fmc is very relatable, and the mmc has has many swoonworthy moments to love🙈 and I am DYING to read what happens between the MMC’s older brother and his love interest😫😫 This book is an amazing start to a series, and I look forward to seeing more people talk about it🤭
Absolutely mind-blowingly amazing! If you told me before I read this book that dragon riding, Fae, gods, Alien Abduction and intergalactic war could so flawlessly co-exist in a plot, I wouldn't have believed you. This book will live rent free in my head forever. I am so happy I got to read it but also so sad it is over and I have to wait for the next one to come out.
ARC Review First of all, the book is beautiful, both inside and out! From the very first chapter the actions begins, it grabs you and keeps you invested. Very well written.
Jane, the main character is likeable, a bit niave, but realistic given her situation. The fantasy elements, especially the source of light is very interesting. World building and characters are excellent. The love story is also a nice slow burn. I cannot wait for the next one! I highly recommend!
