P.I. Nick Forrester comes to Cape Brendan ostensibly to assist with Caper Madness, a month-long celebration of everything Halloween. In reality he is tracking a woman on the run. Within days he is confronted by Annunciata Doyle, a vivid reminder of a pain-filled past. After retreating to Cape Brendan in defeat and humiliation, Nunie Doyle's only hope was to make the best of forced retirement. There, in this quaint tourist town on the shores of Lake Ontario, she earned the love and respect of new friends and neighbors—and put her talent for helping women to good use. With the mutual goal of making Caper Madness the best ever, Nick and Nunie fight tooth and nail on the personal level, each discovering a new side to the other, sides that make them consider making drastic changes for the rest of their lives. This Is it complete madness-- or sheer magic?
Former nurse-paralegal and victim advocate, Veronica spends her time writing and chasing after her 4 terrific grandchildren. She lives in Western New York with her college professor husband and spends vacations in her favorite places on Earth: the Thousand Islands Region and Saranac Lake in the middle of the picturesque Adirondack Mountains.
In her spare time she designs and creates tote bags and aprons from recycled clothing and table linens.
This books blends mystery, romance, and small-town charm in a way that feels both heartfelt and engaging. Nick’s arrival in Cape Brendan sets the stage for secrets, second chances, and a reunion with Nunie, whose resilience and community ties make her a fun character. The Halloween festival backdrop adds a nice touch, while the emotional tension between Nick and Nunie kept me hooked. This book is equal parts cozy and dramatic, madness or magic, you’ll want to find out.
Thank you to @thewildrosepress and @VeronicaLynchAuthor for a copy of this book, all thoughts are my own.
This story has that cozy small town feel, but there’s also a lot going on under the surface. Seeing Nick connect with Nunie was my favorite part. She’s strong and deeply woven into the community.
Nunie really stands out, because of the work she does helping women escape abusive relationships. The Halloween festival setting added a fun vibe. Nick and Nunie’s emotional pull kept me turning pages. The book has warmth and tension. It has the smells of apple pies and a kindness that you love!!
Even though this is a short book, the story was good, and the plot flowed nicely. I feel like the author did a very good job of setting the scene and painting a picture of the town, along with the people in the story. If you're in the market for a short, easy read that packs a punch, check out this story.
