About the author

S.G. Usven

1 book
S.G. Usven is an Orthopedics and Traumatology specialist who has devoted his career to understanding the mechanics of the human body and its remarkable capacity for healing. From the earliest days of his surgical training, two guiding principles shaped not only his practice but his entire worldview: "respect biology" and medicine's most fundamental tenet, "Primum non nocere" — First, do no harm.
Years of observing willpower and human behavior led Usven to an undeniable truth: human beings are biopsychosocial creatures — yet the key to unlocking the mysteries of our mental and social lives lies in our most fundamental biological codes.
His turning point came when he realized that the very thing he believed was the solution had actually been causing the problem all along.
Change by Doing Nothing was not written to teach. It was written to share — an ongoing journey of discovery that Usven himself is still living. He is not looking for students. He is looking for fellow travelers.

"Routines cannot be built while the alarm is ringing." "You don't change yourself, you remove the thing that's blocking the change - synthetic will, forcing, control." This book is all about getting out of your own way, letting the stressors fall away, and embracing your best self in your natural state to live your best life long term. Doing nothing. The concept is really rather freeing and this book does an excellent job explaining the 'why' behind the concept. It just makes sense. This book released March 26th, 2026. Thank you, BooksGoSocial, for this complimentary copy. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

The basic premise of this book is that forcing your willpower to do anything doesn’t work because it tires out your consciousness and raises levels of cortisol, and your dopamine fades. Ironically, because this is stated so many times, over and over and over, that it takes a great deal of willpower to get through this book. This book could be reduced to a 10 page essay.

The style of text formatting where so often a single sentence becomes a separate paragraph as if it were a profound statement is also very tiresome.

I have to confess that I didn’t have enough willpower to finish it.

An excellent liberating idea with the science to back it up!

Refuse to force yourself to do anything. Sounds simple but dangerous right? But no. This author makes it very clear truly letting go is the only way real change becomes possible.

It isn't simple to stop forcing ourselves, because we've been taught from the cradle that we cannot trust ourselves to do the right thing and must be forced. So unlearning ... letting go of that control is a slow but rewarding process. And it feels so much better. Peace!

I can relate to what the author had experienced, but his struggle is much deeper than mine. I appreciate that he explained our struggles scientifically; it was enlightening and gave me a different perspective, helping me look at things objectively. I am glad that I learned early on to let go of the things I can't control and to let things be.

Well written and, for me at least, life changing. The innovative approach and presentation spoke to me and my self sabotage issues.

Aren´t we told from early on that we can achieve anything if only we put enough effort into it? How can we not feel like a failure when we do not succeed in everything we set our mind on? I liked how this book took away the pressure of constant success.

Willpower might be the problem rather than the solution in this provocative book. The author an orthopedic surgeon makes a biological case for why forcing change backfires. It felt quietly transformative and it doesn't just offer another habit tracker.
