Tales of the Forsaken Realm #2

The Night and His Flame

Rate this book
A cursed fae. A fated bond. And a reckless kiss that might destroy them both.

Trapped in a human realm, Sera has been damned to watch everyone she cares about grow old and die for the last century. Determined never to love again, she keeps the world at a distance, until her choice to break an ancient enchantment leaves her cursed. Every sunset she loses herself to the swan beneath her skin.

Bound to a future in his father’s shadow, Alex dreams of escape and a path to call his own. The moment he meets Sera, he knows he’s found it. Despite how she tries to push him away, he’s determined to keep her in his life and find a way to save her.

But an impulsive decision changes everything.

When fate drags them both into the fae realm, Sera discovers her home has fallen to the enchantress who trapped her more than a century ago. After Alex is captured, Sera must find a way to break her curse and free her mate before the swan consumes her completely and the queen’s hunters ends them both.

The second in a series of interconnected fantasy romance standalones, this Swan Princess/Snow White re-imagining blends banter, spice, and just enough emotional damage to leave a mark.

I love how she weaves the fairytales together in cool new ways. And also so excited to see who the next will be about! I have a good guess but I want to see if i'm right.

I liked the story a lot, I think the only reason I’m not head over heels is I’m still wrapped up over Kian and Raelyn.
I do love it though. Alex is just so adorably cheeky and cute. Getting to read his story with Sera makes me happy.
I love the story of the swan princess and being able to read a rendition of it in this book is amazing.
How the author took the swan princess and Snow White stories and combined them was truly creative and I love how it came together.
I’ve been so hooked on these books these last few days.
Truly believe these are worth the read.

This series has been such a fun read! This is the second book in the series and is a retelling of the Swan Princess with some Snow White mixed in. It a great, quick read and love that its interconnected standalones. Can't wait for the next installment in the series. Also have to thank the author for sending me the eARC, so greatly appreciated!

This book was well done, and I really enjoyed the character development, world building, yearning, betrayals, and the fresh spin on both The Swan Princess and Snow White. That said, I felt that much of the story was quite rushed. I would’ve liked to see it broken into at least two parts—if it had been, it likely would’ve earned a higher rating from me.

Still, if there’s a third installment in this series, I’ll definitely be reading it.

Thank you, Stephanie Combs, for gifting me this eARC. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Notice! I have not read the first book in the series! You can read this one without the other and not feel lost, in my opinion.

I had high hopes going into this book. The premise of a weird curse, bad decisions, a turbulent love story, with a fantasy setting- give it to me! However, the writing was just not it - hence the 2 stars.

Character interactions felt forced and stilted, as if every exchange was meticulously scripted to produce a predetermined outcome, rather than letting the dialogue unfold naturally. Conversations always seemed to resolve too conveniently, without any genuine tension, awkwardness, or emotion. As a result, the characters came across as flat and mechanical—barely more than cardboard cutouts. There was no authentic banter or spark, and the lack of emotional depth made it hard to care about what happened to them.

The characters' inner monologues were fragmented and shallow, often limited to brief, disconnected thoughts that barely scratched the surface of their personalities. Instead of offering deeper insights or meaningful reflection, their thoughts read like a list of generic character traits—"He likes family" immediately followed by "I worry about my father" and nothing more. There was no exploration of motivation or emotion, just a string of surface-level observations that made it difficult to connect with or understand the characters on any meaningful level.

The time skipping was also a nag. Like, yeah, I know that things take time and you have to set the story up. But the fact that the first half of the book was like a whole year told in like 10 chapters was just not it, especially when the chapters could be summarised as “oh we fought” or “he convinced me to join him” and “I felt awful that she left so I made a stupid decision”. The constant jumps made it really hard to get invested in the characters and their relationships because big emotional moments or changes just happened off-page or too quickly. I felt disconnected because I didn’t get to see things develop naturally, which made it hard to understand the characters' motivations or feel engaged with the story. If you like slow-burn or character-driven plots, this could really take you out of the experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/ ️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Book 2 in the Tales of the Forsaken Realm is here with The Night and His Flame. Stephanie Combs adds to this interconnected series with a wonderfully written fairytale reimagining of two classics. The perfect mixture of Swan Princess and Snow White, this book pulled me in from the very beginning and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of reading it. I have always loved reimagined fairytales and when an author nails it, as Stephanie has, I am excited to read more of them. I think it’s the blend of known and unknown, new and old that really captivates me.

Sera is a fae who is cursed to become a swan at night. She has closed her heart off to love and has no intention of ever opening it up. Until she meets Alex, her fated mate. Try as she might to push him away, Alex is determined to show Sere he is here for her. Sera thinks she isn’t any good and unworthy, but Alex proves her wrong time and time again. Sera discovers that Alex is dealing with his own inner demons. When Alex is captured, Sera must make the decision to go after the one person that is truly meant for her or stay on the course of being alone.

This entire story is filled with emotional depth, layered characters, and problems that are easy to connect to. Stephanie does a wonderful job in writing the dilemma, the romance, and the journey of these two as they play tug of war with their bond. Starting in the human realm, traveling into the fae realm, we learn so much about Sera and how time works differently between the realms. It was truly a unique perspective that Stephanie captures perfectly and makes work.

This is the first book that I have read from Stephanie, but I am certain it won’t be the last. Her ability to take beloved classics and both modernize and reimagine them is beautifully written and captured within the pages of her book. I look forward to reading more of this in her earlier books. To be able to take two stories that normally wouldn’t have anything in common between them and find a way to make them blend in such a way that you ask yourself “how has no one done this before” is truly a talent.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

Sometimes we readers get so bogged down with our never-ending TBR list that we lose our sense of joy and just try to power through books as quickly as possible. After reading a string of mediocre romance books, the act of reading itself began to feel like a chore. That’s how I felt when I first started reading this book, to the point that I thought “this isn’t fun, I should just DNF this”. But I have a rule that I cannot DNF a book until I have read at least 100 pages of it, and in this instance, I was glad I did not break my rule.
The Night and His Flame is a story about Sera, a fae woman who was cursed to become a swan at night, and Alex, her fated mate. Sera tries to push him away as Alex desperately tries to keep her in it. Sera then goes back home to find a way to break her curse, but Alex accidentally comes along with her. What follows is a touching story about love and sacrifice in the face of great odds.
The book started out super slow and repetitive, showing us the great push and pull between Sera’s and Alex’s relationship. The first 25% of the book really talked about how Sera should stay out of Alex’s life (because she is no good, etc.) but that Alex clings to her like Saran wrap, desperate to stay in her life and make her love him. The book repeatedly talked about this that after hitting the 25% mark that I longed to yell at the author “We get it! They love each other, but they can never end up together!”. I wish the author cut some of this down and got to the meat of the story a little quicker, picking up speed and interest from here on out.
But after this, the story opens up beautifully to show us Alex’s addiction struggles and Sera’s commitment phobia, juxtaposing their personal struggles with their relationship struggles with each other beautifully. I felt that the way the author wrote their personal struggles did not take away from the story but rather enhanced it overall. I don’t want to say too much, for fear of spoiling but I think if the reader can get past the first 25% of the book, you are in for a wonderfully emotional ride that kept me thinking about these characters long after I read the last page.

Thank you to NetGalley and Midnight Publishing for this ARC.

This book was one of the craziest roller coasters I've ever been on.

One moment I was ready to DNF, the next something really interesting kept me going. The entire book was like this for me.

I think one of the issues was that it took a really long time for the actual story to happen. There was a lot of back story that was in the first several chapters, that I think was there due to this being written and marketed as an "interconnected standalone." I made a whole Reel on Instagram about this topic, so you can watch that instead of me going on about that here.

This book would have kept my attention more consistently if it had just been written as book 2 in a series, and I've found that to be true about interconnected standalones that should really just be marketed as a series series.

When I started The Night and His Flame, I was so confused until I went back and read the first book, The Sun and Her Shadow. Once I had that context, I was much more invested in getting through the story.

Both main characters, Sera and Alex, had significant roles in The Sun and Her Shadow, although they were technically side characters. They were absolutely essential to the plot, so they were more like a sub-plot. In that book and into The Night and His Flame, they seemed like caricature of the quietly strong woman brought out by the antics of a playboy that has a thing for her.

In The Night and His Flame, there was a lot that felt familiar and formulaic. I am usually all for tropes and knowing what to expect, but it just wasn't doing it for me in this case.

However, there were two twists to the story that I did not see, and that made getting through the book worth the time and effort. Alex in particular had a very interesting character arc. He was the person who kept me reading.

I rated this 3.5 stars because it was fine, but had a little interesting twist. Let me be clear, for me, a 3 star review is not bad. It means the book was fine, and I didn't mind reading it. But it wasn't great, and I probably won't buy it. But someone else could enjoy it more, and I wouldn't discourage them from giving it a try.

I received an advance reader copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This basically continues from the first book with all the characters we loved from the first book, but focusing on Sera and her curse and Alex trying to help her break it.

I….did not enjoy this one as much as the first book. It started off very slow and about halfway through, it really did pick up and I enjoyed myself more and enjoyed the story and plot a lot more.

I loved seeing everyone together still and learning more about Sera and Alex as individuals and then learning about Sera’s world.

I struggled with the pacing and the romance.

There are a lot of time jumps, and I mean a lot and long ones. Time would pass fast, but it didn’t feel like it did and got confusing at times for me if I didn’t keep track.

The romance felt forced, or the yearning felt forced.

I felt the emotions and feelings Sera had made sense but also didn’t. I get the not trusting after we learn more about her past, however, I don’t think she handled her interactions with Alex good at all, especially when he was going through his rough time. I mean, rather than be a jerk and reject him over and over again, and have the audacity to be angry when he tries to spend time with someone else, how about you explain where you stand and be friends. The way she handled everything was poorly done.

Alex’s yearning didn’t feel real because it didn’t feel like what he wanted was worth it. I didn’t particularly like Sera, she was a jerk! And so his yearning didn’t feel right. It felt forced and I was being told about his yearning, I didn’t feel it. And then his rough moment with addiction seemed to be glossed over, it’s like it was acknowledged, but it seemed so fast and everyone, especially Sera, seemed to just forget about it even though it was brought up throughout the rest of the book.

And then I don’t know how a prince, a goddess, an ambassador’s son and a maid have the time to literally meet up every day and do research for hours. Where did they find the time? That just couldn’t be possible, everything seemed too easy for them.

I dunno, I just struggled enjoying this second installment. I would for sure recommend because it’s still an enjoyable plot and story, and I really enjoy this series, especially since it’s inspired by fairytales.

Thank you to the author for the e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you, NetGalley and Stephanie Combs, for the ARC of The Night and His Flame in exchange for my review. My opinions are my own.

Swan Princess meets Snow White. Quite literally. The FMC literally turns into a swan at night. In the latter part of the book, she spends some time running from an evil queen and hiding out in a cottage with seven brothers.

Sera is cursed to become a swan every night after she saved her friend, Rae (this is before the novel begins). Sera is a fae from another realm who has been stuck in the human realm for a hundred years. She is friends with Prince Kian, his wife, Rae, and Kian’s best friend, Alex. They didn’t know she was fae until she rescued Rae. There is tension between Alex and Sera because of this. Alex, Kian, and Rae are trying to help Sera find a cure to her curse, but Sera wants to go home. Due to Rae’s new goddess status, she tries to and succeeds in opening a portal back to Sera’s home. Alex ends up going with her, and together they return to Sera’s home court where she was a princess. Instead of finding her family, the enchantress who tricked Sera away from her realm is now queen, and three hundred years have passed (time works differently in different realms). Sera must figure out how to keep Alex safe while dealing with her curse and an evil queen.

The banter between Sera and Alex is mostly sweet but sometimes forced. I do like that they know each other before the story starts. Alex is a complete yearner who makes some questionable choices and might be a bit obsessed with Sera. Their dynamic is interesting but not completely believable.

Overall, the world felt a bit generic, and I couldn’t really visualize either realm. It’s a quick story, though, and everything is easy to understand. The writing was a tad YA for me even though it’s definitely not a YA novel. But if you like fairy-tale retellings, this is a decent one.

This is a Swan Princess retelling and I was immediately like umm a bit over played , But then… yes!
This was such a fun, easy read and a fresh exciting twist on a story that has been done many times before. I really feel she fed on that for inspiration while still making it feel like its own story.

I love interconnect standalone and these books show me how they should be done! being interconnected standalones make my heart happy. You get the world-building, a full story, and an actual ending. Full stop. But then you finish and you’re like… wait, these characters I love are just gone now?! But with these, you get a complete story, but characters from book one are still very active in book two, so you get to know them even more and see everything connect. As book one ends, book two picks up. Like right where you left off but on different characters.

The mate bond was also a plot twist I didn’t see coming. Him feeling the effects so strongly that he was basically drowning himself in addiction without knowing what was causing such a visceral reaction was such an interesting take. Once it all comes together, it makes sense, but it’s something I’ve personally not seen written that way before
And with him being a human? Soild.

I loved the ending and how she brought everything together. I knew there was no way I wanted her left heartbroken watching him die from old age, but I wasn’t sure how we were going to get there. Let’s just say….She wrapped it up really nicely.

I’m excited to continue exploring the world she’s built, and honestly, it feels like she may be setting things up for another book someday. I really hope so because I’m not ready to say goodbye to these characters yet.

Spice level: 🌶️

Tropes:
• Fated mates
• Cursed heroine
• Fairy tale retelling
• Fae realm
• Forced proximity
• He falls first
• Found family/interconnected characters
• Banter
• court politics

Okay… “the night” and “his flame” already sounds like trouble, and apparently I have no interest in staying away from trouble. 😂🌙🔥

The Night and His Flame drew me in with its moody atmosphere, romantic tension, and that delicious feeling that something bigger was happening underneath the surface.

I really enjoyed the contrast between the darkness of the night and the warmth of the flame. It gave the story a beautiful push-and-pull feeling, especially when it came to the characters and their relationship. There’s something about two people who feel like they probably shouldn't get too close—but absolutely cannot seem to stay away from each other—that gets me every time. 👀🔥

The relationship dynamics were definitely a highlight for me. I loved the tension, the emotional moments, and the little glimpses that made me want to understand the characters better. There’s plenty here to keep the romance interesting without it feeling completely predictable.

I did find myself wanting a little more development in certain areas, which is what kept me at four stars, but overall I really enjoyed this one. It kept me invested, gave me plenty of romantic tension, and left me wanting to know what comes next.

If you enjoy romantic tension, secrets, emotional chemistry, opposites-attract energy, and a little danger wrapped around your love story, definitely add this one to your TBR. 🌙🖤

Because apparently my weakness is two people with complicated feelings looking at each other like they're both about to make a terrible decision. 😂🔥

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this ARC! 📖✨

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I did not expect to be reading this alongside a dark romance, and I did not expect it to hold its own. It did.

This is the second in Stephanie Combs’s interconnected standalone series, and the worldbuilding is generous. Alex is human and he follows Sera into the fae realm entirely by accident, which is a wonderful way to drop a reader into a new place, because he does not know anything either.

Sera knows Alex is her fated mate. She will not let him in anyway, because she has decided he can do better. That is the whole ache of this book and it is a familiar one. It is not that she doubts the bond. It is that she doubts she is the right answer to it, and refusing someone is easier than being chosen and later found wanting. Combs lets her hold that position long enough for it to cost her something, which is the right call.

Alex’s addiction is handled honestly. It is not a flaw he sheds once he is loved enough, and the book does not use the relationship as a cure. That restraint matters. A story that lets a man be in recovery and in love at the same time, without making one the treatment for the other, is doing something a lot of books in this genre avoid.

Where I struggled was that some of the twists leaned on history I did not have. This is billed as an interconnected standalone, and I came to it as one, so there were moments where a reveal landed with less weight than I think it was meant to. Readers coming from book one will likely have a different experience, and that may be the right way to read it.

The banter is what I enjoyed most. He calls her spitfire early on, tongue in cheek and completely accurate, and the two of them are genuinely fun to read.

Tropes: fated mates, he falls first, slow burn with medium spice, banter, and yearning. So much yearning.

⭐️ 4/5

I don't know how Stephanie Combs does it.

Seriously. How do you take two stories that seemingly have nothing in common, in this case The Swan Princess and Snow White, and merge them into one story that not only makes sense but lets you actually see the pieces of the original fairytales woven throughout?

I don't know. It blows my mind how well it just WORKED.

In The Night and His Flame, book two in the Tale of the Forsaken Realm series, we follow Sera and Alex, who were my favorite side characters from The Sun and Her Shadow. Sera was cursed in the first book, and this story picks up from there, with Sera dealing with her curse while Alex is determined to help her find a cure.

Of course, Alex is head over heels for Sera, while Sera seems determined to push him away at every opportunity. So naturally, chaos ensues.

Their journey eventually takes them to Sera's home realm, where they are hoping to find help. But things are not exactly as Sera left them. Add in danger, surprises, and a world that has changed, and you've got another story that kept me turning the pages.

I really enjoyed getting to explore Sera's home realm. I do wish we had gotten a little more of the world, but the story didn't really allow for it, and honestly, I don't think that was a bad thing. Sometimes the story needs to move, and this one definitely did.

And the banter between Sera and Alex? Loved it. I just wish Sera would have given in sooner! I spent so much of this book shaking my head at her antics. Girl. PLEASE.

Just like the first book in this series, I absolutely recommend this if you love fairytale reimaginings. Stephanie Combs has somehow figured out how to take familiar stories and turn them into something that feels completely new while still letting you recognize the fairytale underneath.

I don't know how she does it, but I'm here for it.

✨The Night and His Flame✨

I just love reading books by Steph. I know that she’s going to give me a banter-filled, cozy Romantasy while also making me feel every emotion on the spectrum.

TNAHF is the second in Steph’s interconnected standalone series and not only explores new lands but deep emotions and difficulties. We follow a dual POV from our MCs, Sera and Alex. Cursed, all Sera wants to do is rid herself of her nightly frustration and find her way back home. But when the friend of her best friend’s husband sets his sights on her, Sera finds herself in a deeper predicament than she thought: one of the bound kind.

After accidentally falling into the fae world with Sera, Alex can only hope to win her heart. However, the odds are against them even more so than a curse… but a looming addiction and an evil enchantress. With extended found family, snarky banter, and unique plot twists, TNAHF is a swoony tale sure to keep you hoping in hopeless situations.

I found SUCH beauty and sorrow in Alex’s hardships with addiction and heartbreak, but I also loved how he continued to push past his addiction by putting Sera before himself and his craving over and over. I also enjoyed seeing Sera break through her walls and fears to find acceptance and love, not just from others but also herself. And I’m SO eager to see who is next up in book three and I am deciding between two ladies! 🤭 I also adored getting to see Rae and Kian again!

Tropes you may find in TNAHF are fated mates, banter, slow burn to medium spice, he falls first and SO hard, EPIC yearning, “there she is”, found family, “stay”, swan princess x Snow White, hidden identities, plot twists, and a HEA.

It’s such an honor to arc read for you again, Steph. Thank you! I can’t wait for more.

I struggled with this book more than I expected to. Based on the hook and the social media ads I had seen, I was really excited to request this ARC and see how the different retellings would play out. I knew this was the second book in a series, but I was under the impression that it could be read as a standalone. Unfortunately, I quickly realized I was completely lost when it came to the history between the main characters and ended up reading the first book before continuing.

Even after reading the first book, I still found the author’s writing style difficult to follow at times. The story often throws you into situations with a lot of unexplained history, only giving you the context after the fact. On top of that, there were so many different elements at play, from fairy tale retellings to fae and gods, that it sometimes felt like there was too much going on at once.

That being said, there were definitely things I enjoyed. The MMC’s complete infatuation with the FMC was probably my favorite part of the story. The yearning between them was so good and honestly carried me through a large portion of the book. I also really enjoyed seeing how much both characters grew throughout the story. They genuinely seemed to become better people through knowing and loving each other, and I appreciated that growth in their relationship.

Overall, while the story had some interesting ideas and a romance I enjoyed, I struggled with the way everything was put together and found myself feeling confused more often than invested. However, the romance, yearning, and character growth were enough to keep me interested and gave me plenty to enjoy along the way.

I struggled a bit with this, I'm afraid. And almost Dnf'd it, but I pushed through because I was so curious about the "The Night" part in the book title. This was not a book for me though, and I'm really sad about it.
It is a mix between Swan princess and Snow white but is doing a great job at being completely it's own thing. The world is vivid and feels very magical. The twists were quite good too.

It is an interconnected standalone that really would have benefited me more if I had read the first part. So I would recommend you read that first. While reading the first few pages it felt like someone had ripped out a couple of chapters and I was thrown right in and got the absolute minimum of background information that would be needed to continue the book. Not a great start but I liked the found family aspect and the MC's seemed likable enough.
But sadly the romance was not very memorable to me and after a while the MC's behavior started to grate on me.
I got used to the writing style but I think the voice of the story is too modern for this world that has a much older feel. Plus the FMC is over a century old and from another realm.

The darker parts of this book were done very well I think. Especially the main villain. Great evil character! You could hear the evil laugh as a background ambiance whenever she was on page.

Thank you so much to Stephanie Combs and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I am truly grateful.

The Night and His Flame by Stephanie Combs

Thank you so much to Stephanie Combs for an Advanced Reader Copy of The Night and His Flame in exchange for my honest review.

THe Night and His Flame is an interconnected standalone fairy tale retelling romantasy novel. It is a retelling of Swan Lake and Snow White. Sera is cursed with turning into a swan when the sun goes down and is in search of a cure. With the help of a trusted friend she makes her way back to her home realm where she attempts to find a way to free herself. After so many years away, Sera is put in quite the predicament when she finds out about everything she missed while she was gone.

Alex has tagged along for the ride. Despite his desperate need for Sera, he tries his best to put his feelings aside as he tries to help Sera break her curse. This becomes increasingly harder as the book progresses and additional obstacles attempt to stop them. Alex is an absolute simp - and I mean that in the best way possible. He would do anything Sera asks of him, even though he knows she doesn’t want a relationship with him. (And I love that for him.)

This book constantly keeps you guessing and what comes next and how Sera and Alex will face the new challenge. This was an easy read, it acted as a nice palette cleanser in between some larger, heavier books I’ve recently read. I think I know where Book 3 is going to take us, and I am interested in the stories to come. So I will certainly keep my eyes peeled for the upcoming novels.

Thank you for the Arc
I really enjoyed *The Night and His Flame*. It was a magical and emotional fantasy romance filled with fae, curses, powerful magic, secrets, and a journey between different realms.
What I loved most was Sera’s journey throughout the story. Her curse, hidden identity, and everything she discovers about her past made her story really interesting to follow. I especially loved watching her slowly understand her own magic and come to accept the part of herself she had been struggling with for so long.
Sera and Alex’s relationship was another part I really enjoyed. Their connection develops through so many complicated moments, secrets, fear, and vulnerability. I liked how their relationship eventually became about truly accepting each other rather than trying to change one another.
The journey to the Woodland Court was also one of my favorite parts. The setting, the secrets surrounding Sera’s family, the mysterious queen, and the danger surrounding them kept the story moving. There were betrayals and unexpected turns that kept me curious about what would happen next.
I also loved the themes of love, acceptance, family, friendship, identity, and finding your place. Despite everything Sera and Alex go through, the story ultimately becomes about accepting who you are and choosing the people you love.
Overall, The Night and His Flame was an enjoyable fantasy romance with a magical world, an emotional relationship, and plenty of secrets and twists along the way. 🤍
A lovely read for anyone who enjoys fantasy romance 📖✨

Firstly, let me just say this book surprised me!! It was such a vibes read that I finished it in one day. I loved the little found family and the world building, especially the traveling between worlds! Rae and Kian are hilarious I need more of them! I do wish I read book 1 first (even though this is a standalone), but I was still able to understand the characters and plot. My favorite part was 100% Alex. The yearning was insanely good! I loved the switch up of the MMC being the mortal and basically powerless one (the FMC is fae). Alex had some amazing banter as well which has made him one of my new favorite MMCs. The ending was really beautiful and made me wish this wasn’t a standalone. This book felt very whimsical and featured struggles with addiction and depression. Overall, I absolutely loved The Night and His Flame and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the story brings!

Sera has been cursed and betrayed her friends by hiding her identity. She is a fae with fire magic stuck in the Forsaken Realm for over 100 years and longs to go home. Once given the opportunity, she discovers her home world is not how she left it. Sera betrayed Alex by keeping secrets and now she has to decide if he can forgive her. Except even if he does, will Sera allow herself to be with him? Ugh the yearning was just on another level between these two 💙

As someone who grew up completely obsessed with The Swan Princess, I was both thrilled and a little nervous to dive into The Night and His Flame but Stephanie Combs absolutely delivered.

This book is pitched as an interconnected standalone, but here’s a quick heads-up for future readers: the opening chapter drops you straight into the aftermath of book one, The Sun and Her Shadow. Because of that, I found the beginning a little confusing, especially when it came to understanding how the main characters’ relationship and history came to be.
That said, don’t let the slightly chaotic start put you off. Once I got past the initial setup, the story really found its rhythm around the midpoint.

Here’s what made this book so special:

Nostalgia Brought to Life
The fairytale elements were woven into the story so beautifully. It gave me that wonderful sense of nostalgia while still feeling fresh and uniquely its own. The blend of The Swan Princess and Snow White was especially magical, and honestly, I was living for it.

Immersive World-Building
The transition from the human realm back into the fae realm was rich, vivid, and beautifully detailed. The world felt expansive without losing sight of the characters.

If you love fated mates, banter-filled slow burns, magical fairytale retellings, and a romance that feels fresh rather than predictable, this is definitely one to add to your list.

A big thank you to Stephanie Combs for giving me to opportunity to be an ARC reader for this book and to give this honest review.

I would really love to give this book a 4.5/5 but unfortunately I can't with GoodReads.

This is the second book in the series of stand alones but I feel like you know and understand more about the characters if you read the books in order. A small spoiler if you don't read the first book, The Sun and Her Shadow; to help break Rae free, Sera was cursed to turn into a swan as the sun dropped below the horizon.

The Night and His Flame follows the supporting characters from the first book, Sera and Alex. At times, I did feel like the book was dragging but overall, it wasn't very often. The books had a few twists and turns I wasn't fully expecting, but hopefully it'll help lead into the 3rd book that's currently being written.

While this book did have some spice🌶 to it, it was only in a few chapters here and there; mostly a lot yearning between the MMC and FMC.

This book has friends to lovers, fated mates, banter, drug abuse, Swan Princess/Snow White retelling, vampires, shapeshifters, dragons, elemental magic, gods and goddesses, "There she is", secret Identities while all still being a great romantacy book. If it wasn't for the spice, I feel like this book would be more of a YA book but I still look forward to reading book 3!

When I first found out about this book, all I read was Swan Princess/Snow White retelling and that was enough.

It didn’t let me down at all. My only let down is my fault that I thought this was book 1 so I’ll have to go back and read book 2! I NEED MORE ALEX AND SERA!

This book hooked me at first, admittedly I was a little confused (like I said thought it was book 1) a quick Google search told me I was incorrect. 😫🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ll go back and read it; it’s already added to my kindle! However, like I said I was immediately hooked. The characters immediately had intrigue and finding out there are gods and goddesses, plus a witch/enchantress, a swan princess and Snow White retelling?! This is literally the book of my childhood dreams!

The characters were so well thought out and each with their own struggles, uniqueness and emotional depth.

I loved both our MMC and our FMC. Their love story was so beautiful. I was immediately drawn in by their banter. I LOVE good banter. Plus the spice, woo girl it was excellent.

The world building is so unique and interesting. Literally out of fairytales but with ALL of your favorite elements!! LITERALLY.

How this series isn’t bigger is beyond me!! Literally read it in one day!

A must read if you enjoy fairytale retellings and fantasy

So so grateful to have received this as an arc.

"If you would free Sera from her curse, I'd gladly roam the realm at night and forsake the suns. She is worth any sacrifice."

And once again miss Stephanie Combs has left me speechless, sitting in my room, staring at a wall, and with an utter bookish hangover. My flabbers were gasted, expectations far surpassed. I mean, I found the premise interesting, but this book delivered on so many levels, I wasn't prepared for.

The worldbuilding, as always, is just magnificent. I really loved the way the fae realm was described, the politics, the different courts... The characters, also, felt really natural and realistic—if one can say that about immortal fae.

I loved Kian and Rae's story (in the first book) for many reasons, but Alex and Sera's had a completely different spin to it. It's not often in romantasy books that SHE’S the immortal, centuries old fae. Sera is also an incredibly deep and well-written character, I loved every chapter from her point of view. It was also really enjoyable to see the story through Alex's eyes, especially the way he viewed Sera, that's a boy obsessed with his woman.

Overall, I hope to return to the Forsaken realm soon, and would like to thank the author for the eARC of this book!

Firstly, i have a confession… i have never read a swan princess/ snow white retelling and i cannot tell you how much this book did not disappoint. This book literally had my heart in a whirl wind of emotions, especially Alex and all of his struggles but i loved how we get to see his fierce determination with it. And then we have Sera who is also going through her own struggles. Both of these MC’s were always messing with my heart strings the whole book. 🥺

I also loved the pace, sitting at 363 pages, it was definitely a fun read. I tend to usually ready longer books but this book was very refreshing and relaxing.

The world building was fabulous, along with all the banter and tension. The plot was spot on, there was definitely some twists and turns i was not ready for.

I really did love that SHE was the fae, there are not that many books out there like that. And the one that are, most just haven’t been my vibe but THIS definitely was!

All and all, this was a 5 star read and i will definitely need to go back to read book one in this series of interconnected standalones!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you Stephanie for letting me ARC read The Night and His Flame, you write beautifully and i really love how descriptive you are. I can’t wait to read more books from you.

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy in return for an honest review.

This book is more like a 4.5. I loved a lot of things about the book. The banter, the yearning, the uniqueness of the magic system, her being a Swan shifter, and the found family vibes made this book extremely enjoyable.

This was definitely a fast paced story that kept my interest the entire time. Alex and his devotion to Sera was the best part for me. He was really put through the ringer in this book, but it was all for Sera. My heart broke for him alot throughout the story and the author did a good job with the depression and drug use storyline. (Check your trigger warnings)

Sara - definitely a badass FMC and had a ton of secreta. Her motives for pushing Alex away were understandable but sometimes it felt like a lot. I loved the fated mates and how that was tied into the story. The yearning between the two of them was delicious and she was rightfully cautious.

All in all this was a beautiful storyline, but at times there was alot going on- Portals, dragons, vampires, and animal shifters.

If you like fairytale retells I highly reccomend this!

Thank you to Stephanie Combs, the author, for providing me with an eARC of The Night & His Flame.

Listen, I'm a sucker for a fairytale retelling. Add in a fairytale mash-up it's over for me. The Night & His Flame is the second book in the Tales of the Forsaken Realm series which is made up of Interconnected standalones. I do sometimes struggle with interconnected standalones because I fall in love with the first set of main characters and the POV switch is a rough transition for me. All that to say, Stephanie Combs interwove the newer set of main characters so well into the first book, The Sun & Her Shadow, it was really seamless for me.

5⭐️

I enjoyed this book as much as the last. It's a quick fun read with all the elements of a grown-up fairytale you could ever wish for. I can't wait to see where the author takes us next and I have a feeling about which character might be up for their HEA. If I'm right, consider me sat. 👀

I think you'd love The Night & His Flame if you enjoy:

- Fated Mates (Spice rating: 🌶🌶)
- Fairytale retllings (The Swan Princess 🦢 x Snow White 🪓)
- Elemental Magic
- Fast-paced, quick reads

Huge thank you to the author for providing me with an advanced copy of this book!

Tropes: fated mates, frenemies to lovers, slow burn, curses, swan princess x snow white, yearning, “there she is”

This is an interconnected standalone and it picks up some events of the first book. The story dives straight into the action from page one!

The pining and longing in this book were absolutely top-tier (not that I’m complaining!), Alex was truly a man on a missionI, I fell in love with how ridiculously attentive and protective he was, even (especially) when Sera kept pushing him away🥹

Sera’s journey is so complex, and everything she had to endure throughout this story broke my heart! The plot had some twists I definitely did not see coming, which made the moment she and Alex finally came together feel so rewarding and earned!

Without giving away any spoilers, I feel like there were definitely some delicious breadcrumbs left for future books, and I am very excited to see where the series goes next!

I am a sucker for a good fairy tale reimagining, but the way this author reinvents the wheel for tales we know and love is something otherworldly.

As a swan princess fan from early childhood, I came into this story expectant and excited and I was not disappointed!

This Swan Princess/ Snow White loose retelling has everything you love from your beloved fairytales, mixed with spine tingling new adventures, epically devastating and unique curses to untangle, and romance that will both break your heart, and make it soar, sometimes within the same chapter.

I cannot wait to read more by this author, and Sera and Alex’s story is one that will compel readers to read ever faster, as they race against impossible odds to find a way to free themselves from ironclad addictions, stifling curses, and cunning and vile enchantments.

I would love a chance to revisit this world and discover more from its characters, magical creatures, and lore. Well done Stephanie! You truly created something magical.
