It starts slowly. Bizarre murders. Disappearances. Suicides. Sightings of strange creatures in the night. But the strangeness soon snowballs out of control, with people turning insanely violent without warning and sinister cults growing bolder and more dangerous. Nightmares come to life and monsters walk the streets of the city. And all those events are but a prelude to something far worse. Darkness is coming to Las Vegas.
A police detective, a street gang member, an exotic dancer and a visiting tourist cross paths with a bizarre collection of occult troubleshooters trying to prevent the looming disaster. Their actions will determine whether or not Las Vegas will be destroyed by the occult forces gathering around it - and whether or not the rest of the world will follow.
Shadowfall: Las Vegas is a horror-action novel with a dash of humor and film noir sensibilities, with a diverse and compelling cast of characters, Lovecraftian undertones and more than a few zombies.
C.J. discovered his obsession with making up crap and writing it down at the age of 6, when he wrote his first short story, back in the days when the Cold War was still on and the only mobile devices were the wrist watch and the walkie-talkie. He's been making up crap and writing it down for fun and profit ever since.
I read the whole book in one day, yes Virginia it is that good. From people who do what people do best, living on the banks of Denial. To a collection of people who become monsters so no one else has to. In doing so become unlikely heroes. Could we become like Brandon a Saint or programming nerd wizard or both? #WTF- VEGAS?
I've read 5 of Mr. Carella's books in the last few weeks and enjoyed all of them. I think that Shadowfall: Las Vegas is the best so far. It compares favorably to the Monster Hunter series by Larry Correia and if you enjoy Monster Hunters I am sure that you'll enjoy this book also.
Although I'm usually very much a fan of Mr Carella, this was just channeling Lovecraft a little bit too much for me to cosy up to. Will definitely read more of his stuff, just won't be pursuing this series.
I am not going to rate this book with any stars because my problem with it is the content, not the quality and I actually only got a little more than 1/2 through after almost 2 weeks. My boyfriend thought I would like the story, but I just didn't like the constant violence. I do think the writing is creative and I loved that the story takes place in my hometown. So I would recommend this book to people who like a lot of action and violence and a fun story about the destruction of Vegas. :)
A rollicking great read. As sin city takes a supernatural hit straight out of Lovecraft. You want fantastic / horror / military science fiction you got baby. Who's gonna save us, the stripper? The computer geeks? The Las Vegas cop ex MP? Ooh-Rah grab your weapons of choice, there are the hordes of darkness to fight and it looks like what happens in Las Vegas might not stay there. Deus Vaut! Now where did I put my sword and my pistol...
