Eddie has a Big Cock The chicken-headed Menagerie assassin has found his way to Pluto. Who could’ve given up Eddie’s secret? Or is Big Cock here for another purpose? Whatever the answer is, it’s obviously all Eddie’s fault, and now the whole town is in danger. Oh, and it gets worse. Deep within the confines of the abandoned Wrong dog Park, Richard Smiley is working on a plan to take Eddie down and tighten his criminal grip on the town…
Three issues in and I'm surprised how comfortable and familiar this world and characters feel. The creators have done an excellent job of setting the tone of a zany but grounded reality where such odd characters can exist alongside relatively normal ones. Take for instance repeatedly saying "big cock" while having a crazy antagonist for the issue. There's humour but also signs of humanity that make the A-hole of a lead increasingly likeable eg how he helps his father without hesitation despite their complicated history. I'm not entirely sure how this can go beyond a miniseries as it already feels the menagerie know where Eddie is but maybe the current set-up is just an opening arc and not the ongoing plot?
The art is great again and the action is somehow tense and ridiculous at the same time - I'm not sure a guy with a chicken mask should be so intimidating and silly simultaneously.
This remains my favourite of the new Vertigo books by some distance.
Overall = 5/5 Writing = 5/5 Art = 4/5
Will I read the next issue? Yes
Wait for the trade collection? This feels like it's constructed for episodic reads but I imagine it would be a blast to read in one sitting.
Did I need to read previous issues/series? there's only 2 other issues and they are setting up this arc and series as a whole.
This series continues to impress me and elate me with the way it balances the line of Eddie being a complete douche and at the end of the day truly caring about the people close to him and their well being. The assassin is finding a heart once more and I’m all for it as it continues to fill the “Archer” hole that has been missing since that show ended. But we start this issue by focusing on our “threats” in the for. Of the WrongDog amusement park as the operations hub for the defamed and canceled Richard Smiley as he has turned away from being a “beta” to a life of crime. But with Eddie messing with his business and defending the local townsfolk from extortion, this poses a bit of a problem none of his men are capable of facing. But as it turns out one of Richard’s biggest fans, someone who bought him a lot of alcohol a while back, is actually an assassin handler for the menagerie…and they still have his card. With their only description of Eddie being the due with the giant horse tattoo…this does not bode well for Eddie staying hidden for long.
As we pickup from the last issue, Eddie heads home in search of a cleanup contact from his father after killing his former business partners that got him into this mess with the robbery in the first place. But it seems his dad needs a bit of a different kind of cleanup help as Eddie arrives to find him in the bathroom on the ground after he couldn’t get there in time before having an accident. Eddie toughened up and refused to leave his father to wallow in his own feces, stepping in to help get him cleaned up. I knew there was a heart in there somewhere, even if Eddie is hard pressed to find it. This is further enforced by Eddie’s walk back to the gas station, as that’s the only place to do anything in town, afterwards where he happens to find Sophie. She came here for coffee as she lost another patient and needed to get away an Eddie ended up mentioning the predicament with his dad and his own need to get away. Sophie checked her watch so she could run over and get George cleaned up, only to be completely shocked when Eddie revealed he already helped out. Eddie then asked her about a medical issue he’s been having where he can’t seem to catch his breath and his head is constantly spinning…to her it sounds like he is truly facing the implications of his father dying, Eddie finds this ridiculous. But Sophie sees it all the time, we spend our whole lives seeing our parents as indestructible but the first time you are presented with proof of their mortality…it does a whammy on you. Eddie refuses to accept this, lol, but I love how on the nose the emotionally driven aspects of this story are. As at the end of the day Sophie’s point is exactly what all of this is about and I couldn’t appreciate it more.
The next morning Eddie and George actually enjoyed breakfast without George wanting to try and kill Eddie. But then they received a knock at the door as the owner of the candle shop, Emily, dropped by with a thank you pie for Eddie’s help in driving away the hooligans that have been harassing people in town. George was completely oblivious to this trouble as no one told him because of his help, but the last thing Eddie is interested in is pie. But then they get an absolute bombshell as Emily points out the craziest thing in town with a man wearing a black suit and a chicken mask at the diner. George immediately freaks out, walking over to Eddie to whisper to him about a fortified location four clicks out back where Eddie can stay and possible survive an adults from the Menagerie. But the last thing Eddie is going to do is run away, that would be humiliating, and instead he asks Emily to drive him into town.
Eddie walks right into the diner where the owners are watching the chicken mask guy in an anticipation to see if he will remove his mask before eating the breakfast he ordered. But Eddie walks right over, sits down across from him, and sticks a gun into the assassin’s crotch. Eddie asks how he possibly found him, but the only thing the assassin says the entire conversation are two words: “big cock.” Eddie is immediately thrown off by this by quickly realizes by the flyer sitting in the table that big cock has no idea who he is and is only here because of the wrongdog theme park as he is a fan. This is a major relief for Eddie because Big Cock is HUGE, and Eddie hates fighting big guys. He has no problem shooting them but actually fighting he has a problem with it. By the entire time Eddie is yapping away without a worry, Big Cock is signing into his phone to check the Menagerie news board where he finds a kill on sight order for Eddie. Upon finding this he immediately lifts up his two large fists and slams into the table, knocking it into Eddie as he drags him by the ankle outside. Big cock ends up punching and kicking Eddie all over town until they end up at the gas station. This is almost the place where everything ended for Eddie as Big Cock began to choke him out…until Leona, the owner and operator, took her high pressure hose and sent a stream of water right through one of the massive eye holes of big cock, forcing it to flood out of his mouth, completely throwing him off balance. As big cone began to go towards Leona, Eddie responded in kind by pouring gasoline all over big cock and then immediately lighting him on fire. Leona is quite worried about the fire right next to the pumps but Eddie assured her he will be dead soon…but as the fire starts to go out, big cock is still standing and even angrier. Eddie makes a break for it to the nearby woods where his laziness has come in handy as the three former business partners he killed last issue are still there with their guns and weapons all over the place. As big cock lumbers to wards him, still completely on fire, Eddie prepares to shoot him down…but big cock finally collapses before that can happen. So was this the dude Richard ended up getting from his contact, or was it completely coincidental and big cock also happens to be a fan? That seems like a very slim chance of being a coincidence. As the issue comes to an end we jump forward a week to find that Drahthaar, the menagerie’s best tracker, has located George’s house as he suspects Eddie is here. As he arrives he is talking to someone on the phone about his status as he tells them not to worry, he has nothing to be cautious about other than an old ma dying from cancer…but as the tracker approaches the door swings open as George stands with a revolver he has stuck in the trackers face because as he puts it…”I ain’t dead yet.” AHAHAHA!

This book is becoming one of my favorite ongoings right now. The small town setting and family drama takes the fore, and that’s really a sweet spot for both Starks and Pugh. There are some great charming touches, like the couple that runs the diner providing peanut gallery commentary on the fight between Eddie and Big Cock. Keep it coming!
This was my least favorite issue so far but it was still really good. The characters are a total blast. The humor didn't feel quite as crisp in this one. The fight sequence was fun.
