Eli Kovac was supposed to hire a nanny.
He wasn't supposed to want her for himself.

At twenty-six, Eli Kovac is the Sidewinders' most physical defenseman, a single dad with a punishing road schedule, and a four-year-old daughter who runs his life completely. He's been holding it together alone since the day his ex walked out. He knows what he needs.

Someone reliable.

His daughter knows exactly who she wants. And Eli can't find a reason to argue.

At thirty-six, ten years older than Eli and determined not to complicate her fresh start, Delaney Rhodes takes the job because the pay is good and four-year-old Iris grabs her hand and refuses to let go.

Taking care of Iris is the easy part. Ignoring her hot dad is a whole other story.

Eli is quiet, grumpy, enormous, and completely devoted to his daughter. He's also Delaney's boss, a decade younger than she is, and unfairly easy to look at—especially in the backward hat he keeps wearing around the house.

Worse, Eli keeps stealing glances at her—and catching her doing the same.

The lingering looks last a little too long. The space between them gets a little too small. And keeping things professional starts to feel a lot less like a rule and a lot more like a challenge neither of them wants to win.

Eli has spent four years putting his daughter first, hockey second, and himself nowhere on the list. Delaney is the first thing he's wanted for himself in a very long time.

For once, Eli is ready to go after what he wants.

Luckily for Delaney, it turns out hockey isn't the only place he's good with his hands.

Power Play is a spicy, full-length contemporary hockey romance featuring a grumpy Canadian defenseman who's all hard edges until it comes to the people he loves, the older woman he absolutely should not fall for, forced proximity, a hard-earned fresh start, and a tiny scene-stealer named Iris who picks her dad's girlfriend long before he gets around to admitting that's exactly what he wants. It is the second book in the Phoenix Sidewinders series.

A great continuation of the Phoenix Sidewinders Hockey Series.

Much of this story centers on Delaney and Eli as they attempt to maintain a professional relationship, then navigate what happens when it becomes anything but professional.

Eli's a single dad, who had to deal with his ex choosing herself over him and their child. He's refused to let anyone have a chance to walk out on his daughter again. He struggles with accepting his attraction to Delaney and the fact that she, too, could leave.

Meanwhile, Delaney's left a 6-year relationship where her ex happily let her do everything for him and is now in a situation where she has to wonder if Eli wants her because she’s only useful and convenient. She also struggles with being 10 years older than Eli.

I loved their connection and the slow build-up! The way these two fought against their attraction!

By 75%, the angst was in full swing and only continued to build! By 80%, I was in tears! This section was heartbreaking as Delaney tried to ask the questions she was really afraid to ask, and Eli kept answering with actions instead of words. I wanted to shake these two and demand they just have an actual conversation!

Amy Briggs is so good at making the everyday and mundane things of life have weight and impact. All the small domestic interactions held meaning. I also appreciated how this book focused less on the game and more on the home life of a professional athlete.

Iris and her stuffed dragon, Gerald, were stars of the book. She’s such a cute, precocious little thing and definitely a mini-me of her dad. I absolutely love the Sidewinders team and how they all loved on Iris! Them showing up to her play was the cutest thing ever! Their group chat banter was the perfect comic relief.

Now I’m left wondering which team member will be featured next. Maybe Griffin? Cole?

Thank you, Amy Briggs, for the ARC.

The nanny falling for her boss trope hits differently when her boss is a quiet, protective single dad who never expected to fall himself.

Eli and Delaney’s chemistry kept building through all those little moments at home, and I truly enjoyed seeing them slowly let their guard down and make room for something neither had planned on.

Eli’s quiet, thoughtful way of showing he cares was so endearing, while Delaney’s journey toward finding someone who values her for more than what she can do for them was lovely to see. And Iris, along with her stuffed dragon Gerald, absolutely stole the show! Their moments with Delaney were adorable, and seeing her become part of their little family made the romance even sweeter.

The Sidewinders’ group chat banter was hilarious, and I loved getting more glimpses of the team’s bond beyond the hockey rink. The mix of domestic moments, tension, humour, and spice made this such an enjoyable read, and I’m even more attached to these characters now.

Definitely ready for more Sidewinders shenanigans! ⚡️

A sincere thank you to the lovely Amy Briggs and her Team for the ARC! 🥰📚

I’m so grateful for the early read. As always, all thoughts and opinions are completely my own. ✨

Eli was supposed to hire a nanny.. he wasn’t supposed to want her for himself.

If you want a hockey romance that has giggle and kick your feet moments, but also some make your toe curl spicy moment.. this is the book for you!

This is the third book I’ve read in this series and I will keep reading them all as they come out because it just keeps getting better.

I am so invested in this fictional hockey team and these characters and I will be recommending this series over and over!

Hockey romance
Age gap romance
Grumpy x sunshine
Single dad/Live in nanny
Slow burn

Definitely add this (and the rest of the series) to your TBR!

Power Play by Amy Briggs was another really enjoyable addition to the Phoenix Sidewinders series, and I think one of my favorite things about this series so far is how much the team actually feels like a team.

I absolutely LOVE the group chat. Some of my favorite moments had nothing to do with the romance at all and were just the guys being ridiculous with each other. I also really appreciate how much we continue to see the side characters. It makes me feel way more invested in the Sidewinders as a whole because these characters don't just disappear once their book is over, and we're also getting little glimpses of the guys whose stories are still coming.

As for Eli and Delaney, I really liked them together. Eli is this huge, quiet, grumpy defenseman who can apparently intimidate everyone around him, and then you put him next to Iris and he is basically done for. His relationship with his daughter was easily one of my favorite parts of the book. He has spent years structuring his entire life around taking care of her, and I loved seeing Delaney come into their little world so naturally.

And Iris? Absolute scene-stealer. That child basically looked at Delaney and said, "Yep, this one," and honestly she had the right idea.

I also really liked the reverse age gap here. Having Delaney be ten years older than Eli was a fun change, especially because Eli really did not care nearly as much about it as she did. Once that man decided he wanted her, there was not a whole lot of internal debating happening on his end.

The nanny/boss situation obviously adds another layer of "this is probably a terrible idea," but the forced proximity worked really well because their relationship had time to build through all those everyday moments at home with Iris. The lingering looks, constantly being around each other, trying to pretend they weren't attracted to each other when literally everyone could probably see it... yeah, good luck with that.

I really enjoyed Eli, Delaney, and Iris together, but honestly, the group chat and all the Sidewinders interactions may have stolen the show for me. I love getting to see these characters exist outside of their individual romances, and that team dynamic continues to be one of my favorite parts of the series.

This is the second book in this series. Power play.
Gosh this book was so freaking sweet and beautiful.
Eli is a single dad of a four year old Iris! Who carries around a stuff dragon name Gerald. He’s at practice when the nanny cancels on him. He never has a steady nanny for Iris until Maren suggest her friend do it. He considers it then says set it up. Let’s not forget Cole who had me cackling!

Delaney is 36 years old moves from Boston to Phoenix for a teaching job that didn’t plan out. She’s in a rented apartment looking at her bank account on her phone when maren offers her the opportunity. Let’s just say she did her research.

Eli is a man of very few words but he shows his love with little gestures coffees in the morning with the same cup and spoon set aside.

Delaney types at 4in the morning listened to every creak pipes she’s learn Eli very quickly.

What stole my heart was Iris how she latched onto Delaney immediately. Someone she knew who would never leave her or let her down. Iris is a great negotiator for a 4 year old.

Eli and Delaney may be 10 years apart but the chemistry and understanding they have between them was beautiful.
I truly enjoyed this book. Delaney, Eli,Iris, Gerald & Zamboni! Are the cutest little family ever.

I can’t wait to see whose book is next!! I hope it’s Cole or griffin!!

Power Play - Amy Briggs
Eli ❤️ Delaney
(Book 2 in the Phoenix Sidewinders series.)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ok I was lucky enough to score the ARC of this book (and we all know I am absolutely feral for Phoenix Sidewinders) and this second book again did NOT disappoint!

Something about a hot broody single dad that just does something to my insides (they get all gooey and warm). This daddy daughter dynamic was done so well too. Their relationship was actually believable and meeting sweet Iris was so amazing! I love her. - side note - I hate when the MMC is a dad in name only and you don't get to see the parenting and that relationship as well because a dad that loves his kids more than himself is the sexiest thing out there - and yippee I got a real daddy (pun intended 😉) in this book!

I was super excited to meet Eli - he sparked my intrest in Offside (Book 1) and I couldn't wait to get my eyes on his story. I loved it. I loved the age gap trope between Delaney and Eli. I loved their dialog (I felt like it was very Gilmore Girls-y). I thought it was just really good.

I love how I still got to see the characters from the first book but I also got to know more about other teammates as well. Amy has really done a great job in this series and I am so excited for everyone to meet Eli, Delaney, Iris, Gerald and Zamboni I hope you love them as much as I do.

You can meet this sweet family 10/27/2026!!!

Wooooooooowza.

First I want to say thank you so much for giving me a chance to read this. Thank you so much for the arc. I absolutely love this series.

Of course I try not to include spoilers!

I haven’t actually read too many books like this one before. Nanny x Boss is similar to other Boss x workers. I’ve read a good amount of CEO stories falling for their secretaries.

It was also a reverse age gap. I haven’t read or seen too many books where the woman is older than the man. It was refreshing to see that an older woman can date a younger man.

I don’t think I’ve read a single dad story yet. I have a few on my TBR (maybe, list is long at this point). I feel that this book did an amazing job with it. Iris (Eli daughter) is so funny and so cute.

I think Delaney and Eli showed what a lot of people go through in relationships. Not every relationship is perfect and you’re gonna have ups in downs that cause you to pull away. (Of course no spoilers).

There were so many cute scenes (as well as the hot ones). The book was at a good paste, it wasn’t rushed or just a run on with words (you know what I mean).

It’s the second book in the series. I can’t wait for the third one. I believe they’re all stand alones but you should go read the first one with Ryan and Maren.

Eli is trying to balance his professional hockey career and being a single father to his daughter Iris especially when it comes to childcare. When his friend suggests that Delaney with her teaching background would be the perfect person he is cautious but there is no denying that Iris adores her and he is beginning to feel the same way as well.

Delaney has recently relocated looking for a fresh start after ending an unfulfilling relationship. Eli’s employment offer comes at the perfect time, and Iris quickly claims her heart. The more time that she spends with both Iris and Eli the righter it begins to feel however she is cautious not only because of the age gap but because of her past.

Iris is the perfect matchmaker as she immediately claimed Delaney for her and Eli however the adults were a little slower to agree. Both Delaney and Eli are trying to ignore their feelings which causes some angst however seeing give in makes it all worthwhile. This is a wonderful addition to this series, and I am looking forward to more stories centered around this hockey team.

ARC Review

Power Play is a fantastic addition to the Phoenix Sidewinders Hockey Series!

Eli and Delaney had me hooked! Between Eli’s fears of letting someone into his and his daughter’s lives and Delaney’s struggles with feeling wanted for more than what she can offer, these two had plenty to work through.

I absolutely loved their connection and the slow burn. The angst was SO good! I was going a little crazy with the miscommunication and was yelling at my kindle for them to just talk things out. 😂

Let’s talk about who stole the show though… Iris and her stuffed dragon, Gerald! Omg, I absolutely loved them! They cracked me up just about every chapter they were in.

And I love how you still get bits and pieces from all the players on the team. And their team chat is everything. Especially when Eli leaves the chat all the time and Cole adds him immediately back in. The found family in this series is so good!!

A beautiful mix of slow-burn romance, angst, found family, and heart. I can’t wait to see what comes next for this series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved this book. We met Eli in the previous book as the quiet single father. His childcare fell thru and no he needs someone to look after his 4 yr old daughter as the season is starting. We meet Delaney, a kindergarten teacher who just left Boston plus left a 6 year relationship where she ran everything. Now in Phoenix, the job that was lined up fell thru and she is in a lease with no income at 36. Her friend Maren tells her about a nanny job and then sets it up. Eli is unsure about meeting this possible nanny but when she arrives smtg in him takes notice plus she had handled kids this young foe years. The deal is cinched when Iris comes in looks at Delaneys red hair then sits in her lap. Delaney moves into the casita to take care of a 4 yr old with an orange dragon named Gerald who has opinions. Routine and structure is the game while Iris and Gerald give their taken on everything. Eli has a woman in his house that he wants...that was never part of the plan. Delaney wants her employer...who happens to be 10 years younger but shes a professional so she writes it down, her thoughts and feelings towards a 6'3 defenseman. The contract is until april. Somewhere along the way things change but that date is still the end. Not so much drama, but being the one who always runs the room makes things unknown plus a sassy 4 year old with a dragon on strike is the highlight and comic relief that you didnt know you needed. Go read this book! Can't wait for the next in the series!

A reverse age gap, single dad/nanny romance that pulls at the heartstrings. I loved Eli, Delaney and little Iris. Eli is such a devoted dad and Delaney forms a beautiful bond with Iris.

Eli was so guarded, always afraid that someone could walk out on him and his daughter again. He tries to fight his attraction to Delaney but she is someone he can’t resist.

Delaney is rebuilding her life after ending a six-year relationship where her ex was fine with her doing everything. When her and Eli get involved, her insecurities creep in thinking it is a similar situation.

Iris is a little scene stealer, I adored her. The forced proximity brings chemistry that is electric.

Beautiful read! Eli and Delaney were so epic. Incredible chemistry. Understanding each other in the quiet, in all the litter things, actions, and soft spoken words. Delaney changes her entire life leaves Boston and moves to phoenix and nanny’s for Eli’s adorable 4 yr old daughter. And that relationship is remarkable! It’s an incredible reverse age gap relationship you’d never really believe would happen until it softly blossoms into one of the most beautiful and quiet soft spoken and careful relationships and partnerships ever. Such a beautiful read.

This is the second book in this hockey series and I was looking forward to learning more about quiet Eli. Since I'm not a native speaker, I might not have caught every bit of the cute banter between Eli and his daughter Iris or D and Iris but I thoroughly enjoyed it. He's such a devoted dad and only hires Delaney because her friend Maren almost forces him to. Delaney was a preschool teacher and hit it off with Iris from the start.

What I didn't like was when she retreated after one of the players got traded and Eli read her completely wrong.

However I adore both characters and love the ending. They really deserve it.

I received my copy of Power Play as an ARC from the author.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Eli and Iris were so cute; how could Delaney not fall in love with them? I enjoyed how Delaney was a strong fmc and fought for her own happiness in the beginning of the book. You also got to see Eli grow from his past trauma. However, I did find that the book dragged a bit for me about 70% in; I felt like a lot of the drama would’ve been resolved with a simple conversation. Delaney was growing in the first 50%+ of the book, then she just seemed to regress. It annoyed me that Eli knew Delaney was retreating and shutting him out, but seemingly didn’t try to actually find out what was going on. He just chose to ignore it and patch it with sex. Yes, I get he had trauma and felt like every woman he had been with chose to leave, but both characters seemed to be growing and building a relationship in the beginning of the book (even if it was unlabelled). Then one obstacle happens, and they both choose to regress and not talk.
I loved the perogi scene; it was super cute. I also loved when Delaney taught Iris to skate; I could vividly see these scenes when reading them. Overall, the fmc and mmc chemistry was great; I felt their personalities brought out the best in each other, and I was invested early on.
The daddy kink was very lightly touched on. You could tell Eli wanted more of a dom-sub relationship, and Delaney was willing to explore it. That being said, it didn’t go into much, so if you don’t enjoy that kink, I feel you could still really like this book. It’s definitely not a pivotal point in my opinion.
I loved the family this hockey team has been creating; I can’t wait to read more of their stories.
I’ll definitely continue this series! I received my copy of Power Play as an ARC from the author.

Phoenix Sidewinders, Book 2

⭐ 4/5 Stars
🌶️ 3/5 Spice

Tropes:
🏒 Hockey Romance
💕 Single Dad / Nanny Romance
🏡 Forced Proximity
❤️ Reverse Age Gap (Older FMC)
🔥 Very Slow Burn
🥹 Found Family

I absolutely adored the first book in the Phoenix Sidewinders series, so I was excited to jump back into this hockey world! Power Play takes a slightly different approach, focusing more on family dynamics, emotional growth, and a slow-burning romance. While this installment had a different feel from the first book, there was still plenty to enjoy, especially the adorable found-family moments!

Eli Kovac is a Canadian hockey player and single dad raising his precious four-year-old daughter, Iris. After moving to Phoenix two years earlier to join the newly established Sidewinders, Eli has been juggling professional hockey and fatherhood. With Iris's mother largely absent from her life, Eli is doing his best to give his little girl everything she deserves. After going through several nannies, he's ready to try again.

Enter Delaney!

Delaney spent fourteen years as a kindergarten teacher in Boston before ending a six-year relationship and moving to Arizona for a fresh start. Unfortunately, her new job falls through, leaving her with very few options. Through her friendship with Marin from book one, she lands a position as Iris's nanny and moves into the casita attached to Eli's home.

And this is where the sweetest little found family begins to develop!

First, we need to talk about Iris and her dragon, Gerald! 🐉 Honestly, Iris might have been my favorite character in the entire book. She's absolutely adorable, and Gerald is practically a main character himself! Their moments brought so much sweetness and charm to the story.

Eli is a man of VERY few words, but he shows his affection through his actions. He makes Delaney coffee every morning, knows exactly how she likes it, and pays attention to the little things. He notices when she's retreating into herself or holding something back, even if he doesn't quite know how to address it.

Delaney, on the other hand, has spent years believing that being needed means being loved. In her previous relationship, she gave everything of herself without receiving the love she deserved in return. Now she's finally finding happiness and a sense of belonging with Eli and Iris, but she's terrified that when hockey season ends, Eli won't need her anymore.

These two have undeniable chemistry, but they spend so much time ignoring it and struggling to express what they're feeling. Delaney doesn't lie to Eli, but she doesn't always tell him everything either. Eli recognizes when something is wrong but struggles to find the words to address it. Both characters genuinely care about each other, yet their inability to communicate becomes one of the biggest obstacles in their relationship.

This is a slow burn, and while I appreciated the emotional foundation of their relationship, the miscommunication sometimes made me want to shake them both and tell them to just TALK!

One thing I really enjoyed was the banter between the Sidewinders players! Their group chats were such a fun addition and a great way to keep the other teammates involved. We don't get much time with the couple from book one beyond learning about their upcoming wedding, but the group messages give us glimpses into the other players' personalities. I loved that little bit of team camaraderie!

Although Eli is a professional hockey defenseman, there isn't a tremendous amount of hockey in this book. Delaney attends a few games, but the focus is much more on their home life and developing relationship. The focus of book 2 is how stressful home life can be for a hockey player.

What I really appreciated was the ending. After all the emotional walls and communication struggles, Amy Briggs gives Eli and Delaney a satisfying happily ever after. The resolution feels genuine and appropriate for these two characters. Their journey comes together in a way that fits their personalities, and I finished the book happy with where their story took them.

Overall, Power Play is a sweet, emotional, slow-burn romance about learning that being needed and being loved aren't necessarily the same thing. It's about finding family, opening yourself up to love, and learning to communicate what your heart really wants.

This was an enjoyable read with some wonderful characters, adorable family moments, and a satisfying HEA. And if you love single-dad romances, older heroines, forced proximity, and found family, this one is definitely worth adding to your TBR!

Bonus: Although this is book two in the Phoenix Sidewinders series, it can absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone!

ARC Disclosure: Thank you to Amy Briggs for the opportunity to read an advance ebook copy of Power Play! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

But he doesn't need to look any longer because Iris knows who she wants. And Eli can't find a reason to argue.

Enter Delaney Rhodes, 36 yrs old and is looking for a fresh start. When she gets offered the nanny job she doesn't hesitate, the pay is good and Iris has ahold of her hand and won't let go.
Looking after Iris will be the easy part. Ignoring her hot dad is a whole other story.

Eli, this man is enormous he's 6'3 and solid. But he's quiet, thoughtful and his little girl has him wrapped around her little finger. He would do anything for her. She will always come first. He never puts himself first. But after he meets Delaney and gets to know her, he is finally ready to go after what he wants and that's Delaney.

Delaney is such a strong FMC she has lived through a lot already. Been looked over and taken advantage of and she's had enough. Phoenix was her fresh start, what she didn't expect to find was a hot, single dad hockey player who made her toes curl with lingering looks and subtle touches. She's in so much trouble!

The tension and chemistry in this book 🥵🔥🔥🔥🔥WOW!
Watching these two try to navigate keeping it professional, was the absolute best. The forced proximity of living in that house together with only a door separating them added so much tension and suspense. They had no chance!
Watching their relationship grow was fantastic. They both learned so much about themselves.
And the spicy scenes were spicy and delicious. 👏🏽🤌🏽🔥This man knows what he likes and isn't afraid to voice that. But he takes care of her first always. And her likes to hear her consent to everything. WHAT A MAN! 🫠

🧡🖤••୨୧•• Plot ••୨୧••🧡🖤

The plot was fantastic. There is always something happening in the book locking you in whether it's a suspenseful hockey game, watching Eli struggle with away games and his feelings, Delaney busy on her computer or Iris's performance that had me sitting there tearing up. Not once did I want to put this book down I had to know what was coming next.
Knowing there was a specific date that things were going to change had me on the edge of my seat. Not knowing which way it was going to go.

🧡🖤••୨୧•• World Building ••୨୧••🧡🖤

The world Amy has brought to life within the Phoenix Sidewinders Hockey Team is phenomenal. The team is everything, you want every single one of them to succeed. The bond they share is so special. Such a beautiful found family.
I love the hockey scenes, the way Amy writes them has you captivated and cheering them on. When someone goes down, you feel it in your bones.

The team itself is made up with so many different personalities, Cole is my fav after Eli. The banter between these two is hilarious. And the group chat is the absolute best!

Cole: [Eli left the chat]
Cole: [Cole added Eli to the chat]
The number of times that happens is soo good. 😂

And Iris, this little girl really does steal the show, her personality is so unique. She made me laugh so much. Aw bond she shares with her dragon 😍. And her negotiating skills are top notch. She knows what she wants and how to go about getting it. Loved the relationship that blossomed between Iris and Delaney soo wholesome and special.

And the ending was perfection. I got everything I wanted and more from this book.

Cannot wait for the next one.

Thank you so much to the Author for the arc of your book. 🧡🖤

Phoenix Sidewinders Hockey — Book 2

📖 ARC REVIEW | SPOILER: HEA 💍❤️

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 Stars | 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3 Peppers

Tropes: Reverse Age Gap • Single Dad • Nanny Romance • Grumpy x Sunshine • Forced Proximity • Slow Burn • Found Family

When Delaney leaves Boston, the only thing she knows for certain is that she’s walking away from a lackluster marriage. Her husband wasn’t a bad man, but something was missing. She wanted more out of life, even if she couldn’t quite put her finger on what that more was.

On a whim, she accepts a teaching position in Arizona, ready for a fresh start. Unfortunately, the job falls through, leaving her in a new state, unemployed, locked into an apartment lease, and wondering what on earth she’s going to do next.

Enter Eli Kovac. 🥵

The strong, silent type. A man of few words, unwavering loyalty, and fiercely protective instincts.

His number one priority? His daughter, Iris. After watching her mother walk away, Eli swore he would never let anyone hurt his little girl like that again.

His second? His hockey team. His brotherhood. His family.

But when one unreliable babysitter after another begins interfering with his responsibilities to the team, his brothers finally convince him to interview for a nanny.

And that’s where things get interesting. 👀

The attraction between Eli and Delaney is immediate, but neither is willing to cross that line. Delaney desperately needs the job, and Eli refuses to risk bringing someone into Iris’s life who might eventually leave.

What follows is a deliciously tension-filled, reverse-age-gap, slow-burn hockey romance that will keep you completely enraptured.

💕 Now, let’s talk characters!

🐉 Iris and Gerald? Their banter is absolute GOLD. 😂 IYKYK! That little girl runs the show, and she KNOWS it. She’s sassy, hilarious, and has a way of wrapping everyone, including the reader, around her tiny little finger.

🔥 Daddy Eli? SIR. 🥵 His quiet confidence, calm authority, and direct assertiveness will leave you absolutely SMOLDERING. He doesn’t need to raise his voice or demand attention. His presence alone commands it. And when that protective, take-charge side comes out? GOOD LORD.

💕 Delaney? She’s the calm in the chaos. Thoughtful, reassuring, emotionally grounded, and wonderfully perceptive. She’s the kind of presence you don’t realize has been missing until she’s there, quietly making everything feel a little more complete.

What I particularly enjoyed was how naturally these characters complemented one another. Eli’s quiet intensity paired beautifully with Delaney’s gentle strength. Their connection wasn’t simply physical; it was built through trust, consistency, and the little moments that slowly became something much bigger.

And let’s not forget the Sidewinders brotherhood! The camaraderie, loyalty, and banter add another layer of warmth and humor to the story.

My final thoughts?

Power Play delivers a beautiful balance of emotional healing, found family, undeniable chemistry, and just enough spice to make you blush. ❤️‍🔥

It’s a reminder that sometimes the life you thought you wanted isn’t the one you’re meant to have, and that love can find you when you’re least expecting it.

If you love a fiercely protective single dad, a strong yet gentle heroine, a scene-stealing little girl, and a hockey player who knows exactly what he wants once he finally allows himself to want it, add this one to your TBR!

“Power Play” is the second book in “A Phoenix Sidewinders Hockey Romance Series.” This is a spicy, full-length contemporary hockey romance featuring a grumpy Canadian defenseman who's all hard edges until it comes to the people he loves, the older woman he absolutely should not fall for, forced proximity, a hard-earned fresh start, and a tiny scene-stealer named Iris who picks her dad's girlfriend long before he gets around to admitting that's exactly what he wants.

Eli Kovac, has been drafted to the new team in the NHL, the Phoenix Sidewinders as part of the expansion draft. The twenty six year old is the Sidewinders' most physical defenseman. As a single dad to four year old Iris who completely runs his life but always his main priority. With a punishing road schedule coming up, Eli knows that he needs to find a reliable and permanent live-in Nanny….ever since Katya, Iris’s mum walked out on them two years ago. When a teammate suggests a friend of Maren’s, he gets them to set it up.

“I was going to fix it. I’d been going to fix it for months and I kept not doing it because finding the right person felt like an impossible task….”

Delaney Rhodes, a kindergarten teacher for fourteen years, has moved from her home town of Boston to Phoenix to start a new job for a change. Unfortunately, when she arrives, the position doesn’t pan out….with her account not looking healthy, she needs to find another job. Maren messaged her about the full time nanny position for Eli and set it up for her. “I’m thirty-six. I’m not doing this. He’s just a man. A very hot and sexy professional athlete man. With a manly man beard. God I love a beard. Whew. Okay, stop. Stop! It’s a job. Taking care of a little one.”

Delaney falls in love with the precocious four year old and taking care of her is easy. If only she could say the same about her boss, he is definitely easy on the eyes….especially in the backward hat he keeps wearing around the house. The feelings are mutual, especially the heated glances towards her. The looks are getting longer, the distance between them less. The “innocent” touches that she cannot forget. Eli is a very quiet man but he notices her, even the little things.

This book is everything you expect from a sports romance with a touch of alpha male thrown in. Once I started reading, I could not put this book down! At times you will laugh, you will cry, get angry and frustrated - most of all, you will love the twists! This book will charm “the pants off you” and leave you going back for more. This is a lovely book that will keep you hooked! It has fun, laughs, intrigue, twists that you do not expect, and physical attraction. You will fall in love with Eli and Delaney. What happens when the feelings are not one sided….when that line is crossed?

“What she did was drop the towel on the counter and get both hands into the front of my shirt, a fistful in each one, and pull. I went. I had one hand in her hair at the base of her skull, the other under her jaw, and I kissed her with every week of wanting her behind it, deep and slow and then not slow, and she groaned into it, low, at the back of her throat, and she didn’t appear to know she’d done it. I wanted to hear it again, with nothing on her.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful slow burn love story, this sweet and emotional romance. From page to page, chapter to chapter, from cover to cover - you will enjoy this beautiful story! This book will not disappoint! Highly recommended 😊

I will say Iris and her stuff dragon Gerald stole the show in this book. I mean for a child to literally have a say in everything especially through her dragon when need be is epic. I mean who else stages a protest through a dragon and wins? I mean lets be honest most parents would not indulge her or her stuffed animal. Eli was such a great dad. He was so loving and protective of his daughter. They had been through so much. Iris's mother chose to walk away from not only Iris but Eli. He spent the rest of his time trying to find a way to protect them both from ever being alone again. At the beginning of the book we meet Eli and Iris and they both keep being disappointed by people who are supposed to be their for Iris. Instead of making a big deal about the change up she just accepts it and carries on with her day. Her interactions with the team and how they rally around her is the best part of all the upheaval they have faced. They will literally do anything for that little girl including helping with her protest and attending her school play. Seriously this hockey team is the best in that way. When we meet Delaney she has moved from Boston to Arizona to start a new life. She was a school teacher for 14 years and in a relationship for 6 years with a man who literally expected her to do everything for him. He would thank her but he never appreciated her or what she contributed. I could feel for Delaney in this way. I mean to devote your life to someone who never acknowledged your contributions is a hard pill to swallow. I will not lie I shed some tears throught this book because Eli and Delaney both were scared of what their changing relationship and feelings meant. She did not want to only be acknowledged for what she brought to the table. She almost wanted to be told what to do so she could feel useful. Eli never spoke much in regards to anything. He was and actions kind of person. It was frustrating at time because if they would have just opened up that line of communication they could have found that they were close to the same page all along. He was scared of being left and she was afraid of only being useful and then when her usefulness ran out where would she be. He tried to show her in small acts of service but that was not the language she spoke. I thought it was great that the author used everyday life events as a way of showing the evolution of the characters. They all grew one act of service and one activity at a time. Those mudane things that we take forgrantted in everyday life had meaning and showed the characters true feelings for each other. Delaney was able to show she was there for Iris but just listening to her and doing thing in a way that kept her on an emotionally level playing field. I truly enjoyed this story and I love how Amy used small and suttle life events to show how life can change in significant ways without anyone being the wiser.

I made it through nine chapters and cannot force myself to read anymore. The focus on Iris and Gerald is too much and I am not interested. She acts like the ruler of the house and I'm over it. I am also just not a fan of this author's writing style.

On the first page, the second and 10th sentences contradict each other. I have only read this in a preview at the end of book one, yet my critique has already started:
...standing in Iris's doorway holding a perfectly reasonable yellow sundress...I hung the blue sundress back on its hook...
Which color is it? Yellow or blue? (note that the way this scene is written in the actual book two, there is no conflict since it only mentions a yellow dress)

While I want to read this book, it is nearly 100 pages longer than book one, which I thought dragged a lot. And why does every kid behave like they rule the household or are a crisis negotiator? No four year-old talks about taxonomy and tidal patterns.

Chapter 1: Cole asking Eli if Iris is his kid and Maren kissing Ryan in public do not align. By the time Maren and Ryan's relationship was public, the team knew Eli was a dad. Iris was also at Cole's pool party at the end of what should have been the team's inaugural season (since the timeline of book two should begin after the conclusion of book one).

Actual: ...and bothered by in the same breath.
Suggested: ...and bothered by it in the same breath.

Actual: My dad used to make me wear a toque under my helmet.” “Your what? “Toque,” he said...
Suggested: My dad used to make me wear a toque under my helmet.” “A what? “Toque,” he said...
Your implies she does know who/what his dad is.

Me: Okay. Details. Real ones. Hours, money, what happens in April, whether he expects me to cook. - This is a conversation she needs to have with Eli in person, not with someone else via text.

Why does Delaney sleep on the couch in the house while Eli is out of town? Doesn't he have a guest room, with a bed?

The first night...listening for a car that was in another state. - This does not make sense. Eli would not drive his car to away games. He would drive to the arena or to the airport (in Phoenix) and fly on the team plane from there (or team bus if another location was close enough).

There is some talk about control; however, like a lot of the wording in this book, I do not understand it:
It took a few sentences in my own head in a Detroit hotel room. It had never made it out of my mouth in under an hour...with no idea how to put any of it...nobody in the room wanted to hear it, so I never had to find out whether they did...she decided to set it down in front of. - The first sentence above reads incomplete. I do not know what 'it' means. And hear what? I am so confused (and maybe stupid) by this scene.

I really do love when authors don’t make their readers wait for their next book for too long. Book 2 in the Phoenix Sidewinders series is here and Amy Briggs has outdone herself. Within the pages of Power Play we meet a single dad, his adorable daughter, and the woman who ends up completing them. My heart swelled while reading the tender father/daughter moments and my toes curled when reading the interactions between our MCs. Amy has quickly become a new favorite author of mine and the amount of work she puts into her books is evident.

Eli is a single father and a professional hockey player who has recently moved to Arizona to play for the Sidewinders. His daughter, Iris, is his world, yet he struggles in finding the balance needed to be the father Iris deserves and the teammate his team needs. Finally deciding to hire another nanny, he meets Delaney. Having moved to Arizona for a fresh start, Delaney is dealing with her own broken heart and when her new job falls through, she needs something. She doesn’t think being a nanny is for her, but after meeting Iris, she can’t say no.

The chemistry between these two is evident from the start. They both struggle to be honest with one another though and at times their lack of mature communication made me want to scream. Eli is very attuned to what Delaney needs and notices things about her she thinks she keeps hidden. Delaney doesn’t want to feel not needed again and is terrified at what will happen once the hockey season ends. When these two finally allow themselves to truly show the other who they are and what they need, I was captivated.

Of course Amy brings the wonderful energy from the rest of the Sidewinders team back to this book. Their group chats had me chuckling while reading and I absolutely love how they show up for each other. As each book reveals layers to all the players I find myself excited for who will be next. Overall, Power Play is a great read and I really enjoyed reading it. While the story focuses mainly on our MCs, Iris steals the spotlight more often than not and I loved that for this story!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

A grumpy hockey player, an older woman, a single-dad situation, and a four-year-old who has apparently already decided who belongs in her family? Iris might just be the real matchmaker in this story! 😂❤️

Eli Kovac sounds like such an interesting combination of intimidating and ridiculously devoted. He's a big, physical defenseman who spends his days on the ice, but his biggest priority is clearly his little girl. I love that he's spent four years putting everyone else first, because Delaney becoming the first person he's wanted for himself in so long gives their romance an extra layer of sweetness.

And Delaney being ten years older than Eli adds a fun twist to the usual hockey romance setup. She's taking the nanny job for a fresh start and a good paycheck, not expecting to develop feelings for her younger, grumpy, ridiculously attractive boss. The stolen glances, lingering looks, and increasingly difficult attempts to stay professional sound like they're going to create some delicious tension. And that backward hat? Apparently, Eli has found a very effective way to distract his nanny. 😏

But honestly, Iris might steal the entire show. There's something especially adorable about a little girl deciding she likes someone and refusing to let go, while her dad is still trying to convince himself that falling for the nanny is a terrible idea. I can already see why her role in bringing these two together is such a big part of the appeal.

Between the single-dad romance, age gap, forced proximity, grumpy hockey hero, and workplace forbidden attraction, this has so many elements I enjoy. Delaney isn't just stepping into a new job; she's potentially becoming part of a little family that already seems to have made room for her. I'm looking forward to seeing how she and Eli navigate the boundaries between employer and employee when their feelings become impossible to ignore.

A grumpy defenseman, an older woman who turns his carefully organized life upside down, and one little girl who's already picked her favourite person. Sounds like Eli might be heading into the most important power play of his life. 🏒😍❤️

A hockey daddy, a reverse age gap, an opinionated stuffed dragon, and an entire hockey team of enablers? THE GREMLIN DEVOURED THIS ONE.🏒❤️🐉

Amy Briggs, you had me at single dad hockey player. Throw in a nanny romance, a delicious slow burn, and found family? I NEVER stood a chance. 😂

Let's talk about Eli. THIS MAN. 🥹 A professional hockey player, a devoted single dad, and a man of very few words. But his actions? They speak VOLUMES. He's protective, thoughtful, and the kind of man who shows you exactly how much you mean to him without needing some grand speech. The little things? THE LITTLE THINGS. 😭❤️

And Delaney! I loved her. She's ten years older, fiercely aware of the complications that come with being his nanny, and understandably hesitant to let herself want more. Watching these two navigate their feelings was everything. The tension, the stolen moments, the quiet gestures... I ate it ALL up.

But can we discuss the supporting cast?!

GERALD. THE STUFFED DRAGON. 🐉

Gerald has opinions. Gerald has demands. And Gerald apparently has connections.

This is no longer a hockey team. This is an organized criminal enterprise operating under the leadership of a stuffed dragon. 💀

The team dynamics absolutely MADE this book for me. The banter, the ridiculous antics, and the way these grown men show up for the people they love? I was laughing one minute and melting the next.

And Iris? That little girl stole my entire heart. 🥹

What I loved most was that this wasn't just a romance. It was about finding your people, learning to let yourself be loved, and realizing that sometimes family is so much bigger than the people you're related to.

The romance gave me butterflies. The found family gave me all the feels. And the humor had me genuinely laughing out loud.

Five stars. Two peppers. One very powerful stuffed dragon.

Eli, welcome to the book-boyfriend list. Your hockey daddy credentials have been APPROVED. 🏒😘

A huge thank you to **Amy Briggs** for trusting me with another ARC! I absolutely loved returning to this world, and I'm already ready for more! ❤️

Power Play by Amy Briggs is the second book in the Phoenix Sidewinders Hockey Series. The story is about Eli, one of the characters already introduced in the first book, who finally gets his own story.

Eli is a single father to an adorable baby girl, Iris, and her dragon Gerald. Delaney, a friend of Maren, is also trying to navigate an unexpected change of plans. When Delaney's job opportunity failed to push through and Eli's babysitter cancelled at the last minute, their paths cross in a way neither originally planned.

What initially attracted me to this story was the idea of a single father trying to balance the responsibilities of parenthood with the demands of being a professional athlete. Iris stole my heart from her very first appearance. I especially loved how quickly she warmed up to Delaney. The affection, the willingness to be close to her, and even the nickname she gave her made their connection so endearing. I also loved how Iris's relationship with Delaney eventually became a factor in Eli's growing feelings for her.

The story was genuinely fun to read, and I had a great time following their relationship. My only concern was that while it was established that Eli is a man of few words, there were moments when I wished he would communicate a little more. Actions may speak louder than words, but sometimes it is just as important to hear someone say that you are loved, valued, and important. Feeling it through someone's actions is wonderful, but hearing it can be just as reassuring. This was my only real downside.

Overall, I loved how the tropes were executed. I also appreciated how the reverse age gap was handled throughout the story. Neither Eli nor Delaney was perfect, and they both had moments when they fell short. However, I was still happy to see them find each other because I genuinely think they complement one another well. I loved seeing Eli get his own happily ever after, and I'm looking forward to reading more from the Phoenix Sidewinders series.

Many thanks to Amy Briggs for once again giving me the opportunity to read this book and be part of her ARC team. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Nothing hits quite like a massive, brooding hockey defenseman in a backward cap… an adorable four-year-old scene-stealer who picks her own nanny… and an electric reverse age-gap, slow burn that completely consumes you.

Power Play by Amy Briggs, Book 2 in the Phoenix Sidewinders series, delivered the ultimate cozy, high-heat sports romance. If you love stories that lean into found family, emotional healing, and everyday domestic intimacy, this one hits every mark.

Delaney Rhodes is thirty-six and determined to make a clean break. After walking away from a relationship where she was taken for granted and moving across the country only to have her teaching job evaporate… she takes a live-in nanny position out of necessity. The pay is great, and four-year-old Iris immediately grabs her hand and refuses to let go… Loving Iris is effortless… the real danger is ignoring the quiet giant… living on the other side of the door.

At twenty-six… Eli Kovac is the Sidewinders' physical enforcer… but at home, he is an exhausted, fiercely protective single dad holding his world together alone. Eli speaks in quiet acts of service… learning how Delaney takes her coffee, fixing things before she asks, and watching her with lingering looks that shrink the room down to nothing. He has spent years putting himself dead last… but Delaney is the first person in forever who makes him want something for himself.

The reverse-age-gap dynamic is handled with genuine maturity. Delaney has always felt her worth was tied to being needed, and watching Eli patiently prove she deserves to be cherished melted my heart. Between their simmering tension, fiery chemistry, and the hilarious Sidewinders team group chats, this book was impossible to put down.

If you love grumpy single dads, live-in nanny forced proximity, older heroines, and a slow burn that delivers scorching heat, add this one to your TBR!

A huge thank you to @amybriggsauthor for the early ARC copy! All thoughts and opinions are completely my own; no AI was used.

This is very much a different approach on a hockey romance. There is some hockey in it. It’s not so much your upbeat hockey romance. With cocky MMC. No this is more of emotional growth outlook style. The way this was written was so beautifully done in my opinion. It was a breath of fresh air because was not in a style that most hockey or even sports romance books are done in.

Tropes in here you are the reverse age gap, hockey romance, single dad, nanny/employer, forced proximity, slow burn(oh it’s torturous), “use your words”, he cums in his pants

This is Eli and Delaney’s story. In a way they both have their own “trauma” when it comes to relationships. She just got out of a 6 year relationship that she realized she essentially was just there to do everything for him for and he never did anything for her. She had this dreams and aspirations that’s she wanted from a man.

Eli has his daughter to look after and a history where he’d say what he’d want but the women always went running.

Through this the way Amy wrote this you get to be in their heads and they dissect everything and you see them grow and those spicy scenes oh man. Eli the man that you are the filth you speak. I need a fan for.
Eli gives Delaney everything she wants and more. But she still lives in her head and honestly that is so true to life because like what person doesn’t live in their head at one point or another.

I will say you do still get the comedy relief in there too. Especially with the group chat. Freaking Cole is so hilarious I can’t wait for his book. Constantly adding Eli back after he leaves. There is more I want to say on that especially with the ending but I don’t do spoilers and that would be a spoiler.

I loved this so much. Well don’t Amy and I’m sorry Ryan but when it comes to Phoenix Sidewinders Eli is top dog now.

This is book 2 in The Phoenix Sidewinders Hockey series and Power play is another Fantastic story.
The next couple to get their romance is Eli Kovac and Delaney Rhodes.
Eli is a Phoenix Sidewinder Hockey player he is 26 and a single Dad to a 4 year old girl Iris,he needs reliable help to take care of his daughter while he is away playing Hockey.
Delaney Rhodes is 36, best friends with Maren(from book 1) she has moved to Phoenix for a fresh start, but the job she was lined up for fell through. So she needs to find a job,so when it is brought to her attention that Eli Kovac needs a nanny, she applys and gets the job.
As you can see there is a 10 year age gap with their story Delaney is older than Eli,..But let me tell you something you would never know as Eli is so dominant. They are attracted to one another but don't know what to do with the attraction, they exchange subtle looks, careful touches and meaningful words until one night everything changes when they cross a line that they cannot come back from.
It was nice seeing Delaney discover things about herself she thought had died..In Delaney's previous relationship her e made her feel less and undesirable and it was her fault...But Eli makes her feel desirable which makes her realise that she was never the problem before.
4 year old Ivy is a delight and brings so much comedy value in the story and I even got educated reading this..I never knew the history of Winnie The Pooh and now I do..lol..
It was also good seeing Eli open up more and we learn more about the quiet hockey player.
Amy Brigg's writing style is so unique I can't even describe it but I really like it..I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I cannot wait for more.
I am loving this world Amy has created and I am excited to see where it goes.
Excellent
5 Stars.

A sweet story between Eli, Delaney, and Iris as they learn to maneuver through life together. Even though this is primarily Eli and Delaney’s story, I adore how Iris, the unapologetic and wide-open mini version of Eli, is included and incorporated throughout the novel, especially with how much her well-being and development is prioritized by all parties involved. Both Eli and Delaney have complicated pasts that tend to interfere with their present lives, and it is clear throughout their story that they are used to putting other people before themselves, rarely going after or letting themselves have what they want. As they try to focus on their respective jobs and goals, their fight against the attraction they feel for each other creates so much yearning and tension that just makes the story so much better. I love the reverse age-gap trope that is so well written into the story with the logical concerns that every woman would have in Delaney’s position. This story had me laughing, crying, and yearning along with and for the main characters multiple times and brought so many feels. Being the child of a single parent myself, I can fully respect those conflicts and challenges Eli faces in his quest to provide for his daughter and give her a stable life with people that will not walk out when times get tough. A wholesome read with a sweet ending that is the perfect second installment in the Sidewinders’ series.

Favorite Quotes:
“You’re here because I want you. Those are different and I know the difference cold.”
“You have no idea what to do when somebody hands you something.”
“I’ve been running the math on a way out of it for months and there isn’t one. There’s no way out of you.”
“You get to want something too. You’ve got my full support.”
“I want you happy…That’s my whole position…Either way, I’m behind you.”

Phoenix Sidewinders Hockey: Eli (& Iris) & Delaney

⭐⭐⭐⭐.75

Single dad romance with a cute kid? Yes, please!

Add in a reverse age gap with Delaney being around ten years older than Eli, and this was right up my alley.

I love a single-parent romance where the child is an actual part of the story rather than just a convenient plot device, and Iris was such a little sweetheart. I loved the bond that developed between her and Delaney. Their relationship added so much warmth to the story, and Iris definitely had her own little role to play in bringing these two together.

Eli is a devoted dad, and I loved seeing that side of him. There’s something about a grumpy hockey player who has a soft spot for his kid that gets me every time! The age-gap dynamic was fun (she’s got 10-11 years on hime), and I enjoyed seeing Delaney navigate her feelings while trying not to overthink everything (spoiler: she kind of failed).

The found-family aspect was another major highlight! I love the camaraderie between the players, and the team group chats were great! I mean, how many times can Eli try to leave!? Those little interactions add so much personality to a series and make you want to spend more time with the whole crew.

There were some mildly angsty moments, mostly driven by Delaney and her own concerns, but nothing too heavy. This was an enjoyable, feel-good romance with plenty of sweetness to balance out the spice.

A lovely single-dad hockey romance with an adorable kid, a fun age-gap dynamic, and a great found-family vibe. Exactly the kind of story I enjoy curling up with!

I am thankful for being given the opportunity to read early, and this review is voluntary.

I love me a series and à Hockey series tips the list. This is boom two in the Phoenix Sidewinders series, and we could have gotten a better set of characters the second book.Eli Kovac, is a single dad first and defenseman in the NHL second. He has a busy schedule and is in desperate need of a nanny, for his daughter. Iris is four and is the ruler of his world, à world he has organized around her comfort and security, so adding someone new is hard for him to do.
Meeting Delaney, blew his expectations and added some complications all at once. As a man of few words and lots of order he found himself wanting to share all of it with Delaney a woman who was hired for his daughter, not for him. Delaney has found that she is overly and inconveniently attracted to her boss, and in-front of his daughter and the ever watchful Gerald something is growing between them and making new rules about inconveniences.
I love their quirky conversations. They’re unspoken but also loud opinions and feelings. I love how Gerald the dragon has his own plate and opinions they both respect. I love how they understood one another when others would think they were either too much or maybe too much. I love most of all, that the team knew before they did or before they admitted it. Because that’s what a team does, it takes note of things and has your back, just like a family. Iris is lucky to have a family of meddling uncles that have her back in all ways, including helping a dragon win a strike.
I can’t wait to see who falls next!!! And hopefully at then of the series we will get the cup!!!
