D.O.C is a harrowing anthology of sixteen short horror stories that explores addiction in its many monstrous forms. From the gnawing ache of overindulgence to the suffocating grip of hoarding, from the glittering seduction of gambling to the chemical promises of drugs and smoke, each tale peels back the veneer of control to reveal something far more insidious lurking beneath.
These stories do not merely examine bad habits; they personify them. Hunger becomes a living force that devours more than flesh. A gambler’s lucky streak opens a door that should never have been touched. Risky desire summons consequences that refuse to stay buried. Even the pursuit of adrenaline and the obsession with death take on a will of their own. Each story stands alone, yet together they form a chilling mosaic of compulsion, shame, and surrender. The characters are ordinary people; who believe they are in control until their cravings begin to whisper back. They are us. They are you.
Unflinching and deeply unsettling, D.O.C forces readers to confront the thin line between desire and destruction. These stories will shock you. They will cling to you. And long after you turn the final page, you may find yourself questioning which of your own hungers is quietly waiting in the dark.

Welcome to D.O.C., better known as Drug of Choice. This anthology features 16 stories centered around different forms of addiction. It is a chilling reminder that not all addictions are drugs.
The stories explore a wide range of addictions, from gambling and work addiction to eating disorders, theft, and sexual addictions and many more.
While I thoroughly enjoyed every story in this collection, my favorites were Gambling, Work, Risky Sex, Kleptomania, and Pica.
This was another great anthology put together by Wounder Pigeon Publications. They always find a topic that can be written in very unique stories relating to hard subject matter that readers can really relate to, and, if not, definitely grab their attention, and shake them to their core. I love giving credit to all who take part in anthologies, and this is no exception.
1. "Gambling: A Good Hand" by Kelvin VA Allison Byron Debault has a problem. An addiction, would be a better term. He loves to gamble. And, in some cases, he doesn't know when to fold, and walk away. He has been invited to a risky game against a man simply known as, "The Surgeon". Having the best hand he thinks he could possibly have, Byron goes all in. However, The Surgeon raises, which is hard for Byron to call, as he has nothing else to offer. But, The Surgeon has an idea, and it's a really extreme one. Unfortunately, it may end up costing more than Byron is willing to wager. This was a wild story, and one of my favorites as it blurs two very different addictions from two very different people, and has a bloody twist, which I usually expect from Kelvin! 2."Smoking: The Blackness" by Lolly Sparrow In this story, we the readers are the main character, and seeing through the eyes, and into the mind of someone whose addiction started early, and became an almost dark entity that grows with exposure to the drug, and become something very sinister, and suffocating. The short story follows a life of the effects of what it can do, not only to the body, but the mind. I loved this! It is very dark, cryptic, and profound. Being a former smoker, this is sometimes the case, and the reason for an addiction being born. 3."Body Modification: A Little Bit More" by Asia Brito Guerrero Angela like getting work done on her body, and even has a list of things that she wants done. After getting her lips filled by her best friend, Kimberly, she is advised to contact a new up and coming plastic surgeon by the name of Dr. Carrington for the remainder of her desired procedures. Getting in fast, Angela goes and meets up with Dr. Carrington, and has a consultation. Everything seems in order, so, she gets her nose done, boobs enhanced, and some fat sucked out. Upon arriving at home, Angela loves the way things have gone, and after healing, she was excited, but, also, she felt the same. She wanted more. Needed more. But, how far would she go to look "perfect"? This had everything I love in it! Body horror, obsession, and gore! This is a major addiction, even nowadays, and the risks are weighed out in hardcore fashion in this tale. 4."Work: The Temple of the Worm" by CS Jones Peter and Janet have a small family in their tiny, religious mining town. Peter knew work, church, and family. But, after a cave in takes the lives of five workers, Peter is called into work. Needing more to help support their kids, Oliver and Penny, Janet understands why he must get more hours. But, soon, hours turn to days, and as days turn to weeks, the vibe of the household changes. Peter, along with a majority of other men in town, haven't been seen, as they are all in the lower section of the mines. The money starts to roll in, affording their family a new car, clothes, and extra cash. While Janet is happier, she, and Oliver, miss Peter a lot, especially since his attitude had changed since being at work for so long. During an argument, Peter lets slip that he is favored, and that is why they are doing better. But, who has favored Peter? And, what is down in the mines that is making them all so much money? This was a very mysterious take on being addicted to work. It really goes to show you that everyone has a price, sometimes, even to the detriment of their own personal, and mental health, as well as their homelife. Fantastic! 5."Death: Death Rattle" by Erica Hart We follow Felix who is a confused young man. The only thing that makes him happy was ripped from him. His dog, Wilbur. But, seeing his animal's decimated body made him realize that he had grown an obsession with death, and very curious about his own mortality. Frequently, he would imagine what it would be like, to die. Felix meets Wren. A troubled young lady who is, also, obsessed with death, but not the way Felix was. She was obsessed with taking life. The pair form a sort of relationship, and fall fast. Is Wren the one? Can she really make all of his twisted dreams come true? This was a sad and twisted love story with a beautiful ending. The love they had, and how they were each other's "fix" was very romantic, in a dark, and violent way. 6."Hoarding: The Things We Keep" by Ashley Todd Marla Penrose is a hoarder. She has collected absolutely every, and anything she has ever found, bought, or been given. Down to trash itself. But, a weird smell has been coming from her home, and a social worker by the name of Clara has been tasked with following up. After no response to her knocking, Clara entered the landfill of a home, and searched for Marla. Finding her, sitting in her living room, terrified, Clara trys to comfort Marla. But, the house, or rather the stuff around the house, seems to have grown a consciousness, and become sentient. And, it doesn’t like to be touched, and doesn't want Clara there. This was a crazy take on hoarding. And, it really goes to show you that, if you hoarding, eventually, the things we own, own us. 7."Self-harm: Home" by Summer Bosley This was a narrative about a depressed girl named Jessie, who became addicted to pain. She found, as she spiraled more and more, that the pain kept her grounded. She had become obsessed with the stinging of a blade separating flesh. And, as years go by, the more and more this feeling takes her into a choke hold, until the damage can no longer be undone. This was a sad story, as it hit home hard. I used to cut, in high school, and found it therapeutic. I found the help I needed, and highly recommend anyone with an addiction like this talk with someone, as with all addictions, before it is too late. 8."Overeating: Hunger Pains" by Tara Losacano Sam wakes up, on day, very, very hungry. Her, and her family had just gotten back from a week's vacation, and, unfortunately, there wasn't much in the house. But, Sam ate what there was. All of it, as she had major hunger pains, and stomach cramps. Later that day, her mother takes her and her baby brother to the grocery store, in order to fill the house back up, after being away for so long. At the store, Sam wanted to eat the lot, but, trys to stifle herself, however, not being able to help herself, she opens up, and begins eating. Scolded by her mother, Sam waits until they, at least, make it back to the car. Upon arriving at the house, Sam's stomach felt slightly better, but she was still starving. Eating a lot at dinner, she saves her dad, who was at work, a plate, but, at night, while her mom slept, ate everything else. Shortly after, her gut rumbles, yet again! But, with no food in the house, what can she possibly consume that will satiate her endless hunger? This took a hard right turn, at the end, and I was shocked! Overeating is something that I had grown up doing, as it was how my grandma showed us love, so it became one and the same. I loved this story, and I found it very creative. 9."Drugs: Pound For Pound" by Dustin Allen This one was short, but very poetic! The reader hears a drug addict lament over the past life that they once knew, and the "fixes" that caused them such indifference to what that life was, or, if it was even real at all, and not just a drug added dream. The visceral description of what this addiction costs, and takes from you was very profound. It was very reminiscent of a personal story being told at an AA/NA meeting, as I have attended a few to support a family member, in the past. 10."Alcohol: Family Heirloom" by Lula Von Goth This story follows a main character who was raised around an alcoholic father. One who just couldn't function without anything in his system. Vowing not to ever be like him, our main character, eventually, find themselves slipping into drinking. Not hard, at first. Just nights out, and the occasional glass, or two with dinner, and lunch. However, when it runs in the family, sometimes it catches up with us. Soon, the couple of glasses become a bottle, then two. And, despite their descent into a familial, hereditary case of alcoholism, our main character continues to deny the inevitable truth that, though they swear they aren't, they are like their father, and the cycle continues. This was a sad story for me, being a recovering alcoholic. It runs in my family, as well, and it is really, really hard to break generational addictions, disorders, and traumas. This was a very important story to me, and read as very personal. 11."Risky Sex: Primal Love" by Henri Noir Stacey is a married woman. Her husband, John is the absolute best, but, he is too vanilla in bed. She wants to be roughed up, and taken advantage of. One night, and not her first, Stacey meets up with a mysterious stranger at her local zoo for some risky public sex. Hopefully, animalistic sex. But, Stacey soon finds out that some kinks are just too weird, and scary for even her. This was an intense story! The kinks, and violence that takes place is so out of left field, and off the wall. And, the twist at the end was a bit disturbing, but, Stacey got what she wanted, ultimately. 12."Kleptomania: One Punch" by Lolly Sparrow Growing up in a care home, Blue really wanted acceptance. This, eventually, leads to her doing things for them, including stealing sweets, and smokes when they wanted them. And, she felt she was good at it. However, one day, is caught. This doesn't stop Blue, it only encourages her to become better at her craft, roaming the streets as a preteen, picking pockets, and taking goods. Soon, she becomes addicted to the feeling of power that stealing gives her. Inevitably, Blue earns a reputation for being a thief. Can she stop before she is locked away? What can possibly be a catalyst for change? Stealing as a kid is something very common, usually a candy bar, or toy we wanted. That is, sometimes, a cross road in our lives that teaches us the harsh consequences. When those consequences aren't present, things can get out of hand. And, the feeling of adrenaline, and the thrill of the chase can absolutely be addictive. This story did a great job of illustrating both! 13."Porn: Plaything" by Megan Stockton Stuart had chosen the sober life, but has, basically, swapped on addiction for another. His new addiction is Lena. Someone he has met online, and pays for explicit content. The only thing about Lena is that she never wants to video chat, and is constantly asking for money. Stuart is waiting for her to show up, after he paid for all of her expenses. They are to meet, finally. Face to face. After all of the tens of thousands that he has spent, this has to be real, right? Who would lie on the internet, anyway? This is a downward spiraling story of a desperate man who just needs someone in his life. Something to keep his mind busy, so he stays sober. And, the violent outcome is one of beauty! 14."Pika: The Secret Sausage" by C. Extreme David is a schizophrenic teen boy. After years of trial, and error, he has finally been put on what feels for him to be the "perfect" dosage, as his hallucinations have all but gone. However, something gets muddled with insurance, and his medication isn't as readily available. And, soon, David begins to see, and hear things again, including the nagging voice of his dog, Boxer. David is feeling like he is going crazy, all over again. But, Boxer has something of an answer for young David. You see, Boxer is always happy, unlike David. And all that needs to be done is to eat "The Secret Sausage", adding back nutrients needed for mental health regulation. After trying it, and finding it actually helpful, David falls down a rabbit hole of, possibly, one of the nastiest addictions one can have, and starts to border a brand new disorder. What the fuck did I just read?! I have come to expect a bit of nastiness from C. Extreme, but this was vile, and I loved it! If you have a strong stomach, this is one of the best stories in the collection. 15."Social Media: One More Click" by Bella Donna In this short tale, our main character is trying to be "internet famous". Particularly, craving to gain as many followers on social media as she can. Attempting to surpass some of the more popular girls she continues to keep seeing, when scrolling. Replying to comments, messages, and giving likes, and gifts have basically become something of a job for her. Disappointed with her numbers, she sometimes would contemplate making sexy content, so she can have the same numbers as a lot of other influencers/content creators, but never had the nerve. As days turn into weeks, and as reality and virtual reality blur, can she ever snap out of the trance that has taken hold of her by the throat with a superficial grip? I enjoyed this! This is something that is rarely talked about, as everyone and their mother uses social media, very frequently. It also really illustrated our human need for acceptance by total strangers. 16."Exercise: No Pain, No Gain" by Phrique Devin has hopes, and big dreams. Devin has been big on exercise most of his young life, only increasing at the passing of his parents, and illness of his grandma. He had vowed to always win, and make them all proud, wherever there were. He wants to enter and win a big body building contest, and he is deadly serious about it. One day, Devin was pushing his limits on the weight bench, and ended up tearing the muscle in his pectoral. The pain was searing. But, Devin was no pussy, and that would stop him, one bit. He doesn't even go to the hospital. In fact, Devin decides that he wants to take the advice of Cole, his mentor, and shoot up in both biceps. This leads major complications. Finally ending up in a medical facility, Devin freaks out, and splits, as he can't afford to stay there. Not financially, in addition to the fact that he needed to keep grinding. Will all of this torture pay off in end for Devin? Will he win the battle with himself? This is the first story I've read from Phrique, and I'm impressed! I loved it. I was very well written, and had some really nasty description of body fluid horror. It dives into something that starts out as self care, and can turn toxic, quickly. It's wild that something thay is supposed to be good for you, can also destroy you.
As a whole, such a fantastic collection of very imaginative, raw, and personal tales thay are all well worth reading. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is addicted to anything at all, as the central theme is very much a similar thing. The need to fill a whole that we have with something that fires off sparks in our brains that make us feel less like shit. Please, if you feel like you have lost control of something that could possibly be dangerous if unchecked, seek assistance, and talk with someone, because, you, your happiness, and well-being matter. 5⭐️/5
Addiction takes many forms, often appearing in the most ordinary behaviors—things we do every day without a second thought. For some, however, these habits can become overwhelming and all-consuming.
This collection of sixteen stories explores addiction beyond the familiar vices of overeating, undereating, gambling, and alcohol. It delves into lesser-known struggles such as pica, compulsive theft, sex addiction, and more, revealing the complexity and diversity of addictive behaviors.
Each story offers a glimpse into the life of the individual, while also showing the far reaching effects addiction has on those around them. Together, these talesdeepen our understanding of what addiction truly looks like.
This was a set of hard hitting stories on different addictions. Trust me folks, you're in for an intense experience, some of which you might relate to on a personal level. All the stories here were great, but there were some that I loved the best, they are.
Gambling by Kelvin V.A. Allison Smoking by Lolly Sparrow Body Modification by Asia Brito Guerrero Work by CS Jones Hoarding by Ashley Todd Drugs by Dustin Allen Pika by C.Extreme Social Media by Bella Donna
Those were my favorites, but all of the stories in this collection are great. Give it a read, but be warned it's an intense one.
Gambling - Kelvin Allison - Byron hooks up with The Surgeon, for a game of cards. But how much would you bet to strike it lucky? This one is grizzly! And such a quick little read!
Smoking - Lolly Sparrow - The black spots linger invading your safe space. This one felt personal.
Body Modification - Asia Brito Guerrero - plastic Surgery. Just a little more. This shorty had some delicious body horror!
Work - C S Jones - How far would you go for work? Would you work your fingers to the bone for it or would you take a more subtle approach and be barely able to support your family? I loved this one a lot!
Death - Erica Hart - Following the passing of his best furry friend, Felix becomes more than a little obsessed with the macabre. This one has some glorious body horror and when I say I was head for it, I truly mean it!
Hoarding - Ashley Todd - Marla’s a hoarder and she isn’t doing too good. This is a super creepy creature feature. Short and sweet! I absolutely devoured this one!
Self Harm - Summer Bosley - This one felt so raw, so visceral, like a lived experience. Packed with emotion for such a shorty!
Overeating - Tara Losacano - Sam’s much hungrier than usual and she can’t help but obsess about it. Something is very, very wrong. There are some vile, splatter scenes that I loved. This story has one of my favourite tropes in it. If you know you know.
Drugs - Dustin Allen - This one really explores the true desperation of addiction. The true sacrifice. Pin point sharp and paced really well. A brutal little tale.
Alcohol - Lula Von Goth - A dark, downhill descent. The unseen grip of addiction.
Risky S*x - Henri Noir - Stacey has a nice life. But she wants more. Everything’s too clean, too happy?! No depravity. But depravity is the one thing Stacey craved. Off on another jaunt Stacey comes to realise this will be an experience like no other. This story goes from one to a hundred in break neck speed.
Kleptomania - Lolly Sparrow - ‘The thrill of the steal was no longer a terror fuelled compulsion’. I loved the world building and character work in this one. I really enjoyed how this story evolved and Blues background. It all felt so real.
Porn - Megan Stockton - This one gave me echoes of woom in terms of the setting. There’s a sense of loneliness in this story that hit hard. This one opens up and the splatter gets chunky dunky!
Pika - C. Extreme - This story features mental health. The dog has a secret: a secret sausage. And this is where the story descends from zero to gross very quickly 🤣🤣. I would recommend not eating either side of during reading this one 🤣🤣
Social Media - Bella Donna - I love the inclusion of social media in this anthology. It’s so relevant and also prevalent. A great little read!
Exercise - Phrique - How far will you go for the look? But underneath that is a tale of grief. So much of the mmc’s thoughts and feelings I could resonate with. A truly great story.
All in all this anthology is simply brilliant and I’m so grateful I had the chance to ARC this one!
OK, word to the wise: this is one hell of a DARK anthology! Addiction is no laughing matter, sure, but the sixteen stories in this book go the full distance, and insightfully grasp that subtle form of dependence, loss of control, and despair of heavy forms of addiction, very seldom found adequately expressed in fiction. They're all meant to hit hard in the feels, each tale covering a different addiction, from gambling, smoking, alcohol, body modification and social media addiction, to less familiar ones, such as addiction to death and exercise addiction. All the stories resonate quite deeply - even that hellish Pica story, C. Extreme's "The Secret Sausage," a disgusting take on the Pica eating disorder, figuring a schizophrenic who takes his dog's advice, and (gasp!) discovers the secret to happiness. Editing issues aside, this was my favorite story in the anthology: it shocked me and made me gag!
There were three stories I would eagerly recommend to any crime fiction and horror thriller fan: the opening story, Kelvin V.A Allison's "A Good Hand," a wonderfully twisty and suspenseful story of a gambling addict finally meeting his match in the weirdest of manners; "One Punch" by Lolly Sparrow, one woman's heartbreaking tale of getting addicted to the thrill of stealing from an early age; and Megan Stockton's "Plaything," a brilliant (and gory) revenge tale, building on a man's cybersex addiction and his discovery of the painful truth behind the screen.
Three horror tales of great originality were Lolly Sparrow's "The Blackness," a story about smoking, told from the most unusual point of view; CS Jones' "The Temple of the Worm," a boy discovering the true meaning of his father's work addiction down in the mines; and the creepy and liminal tale of Ashley Todd's "The Things We Keep," about a social worker attempting to resolve the problems created by the neighborhood's hoarder, and biting off more than she can chew!
A story I especially liked for the writing and the surreal ending was Phrique's "No Pain, No Gain," figuring a man chasing his dream of competing in bodybuilding shows: crammed with those little details that make a story work no matter the theme or the message, it captures the profound blindness and impairment of judgment which addiction causes - in this case, exercise addiction.
Special mention: Summer Bosley's "Home," the bleakest story in the volume, a short tale about self-harm, told from the first point of view; Lula Von Goth's "Family Heirloom," a stunning story about drinking as a family problem, alcohol as the legacy drug of choice; Henri Noir's "Primal Love," about sex addiction - this one involves a lot of blood, a cuck husband, voyeurs, and chimps on rampage - in the middle of it all: a nymphomaniac! That one I found rather hilarious (with apologies to the author).
Included in the back, there are a couple of pages filled with hotlines and sites in both UK and USA for anyone experiencing distress and needs help.
If you or someone you know is going through addiction this is a pretty cool book to sit back on… Me personally… smoking, alcohol, and self harm touch my heart the most The most shocking to me was pica (learn something new everyday)
D.O.C - Drug of choice. An anthology of addiction.
A review of the stories that aren't mine. Those are both in the name Lolly Sparrow and my pseudonym Lola Dove,( accidentally outed by the mister 😂)
1) Forward by Shell Belle. What an incredibly beautiful and insightful way to open an anthology on a subject matter that is so intense. 2) Gambling Kelvin V A Allison. In the words of Kenny Rogers, "you gotta know when to hold them, know when to fold them.." but what if the high of winning stops you from being in control. What happens when the game could cost you everything. This is a great and bloody brutal start to the book! 3) Mine... Smoking. 4) Body Modification. Asia Britto Guerrero. When you get cut off from your addiction, you find ways around it. Those ways are unethical, bloody and bonkers! This story was brutal. 5) Work. CS Jones. Peter works hard, an accident down the mine means he has to work late. This changes him. This changes everyone. A gritty and intense horror. 6)Death. Erica Hart. When Felix loses Wilbur his dog. He becomes obsessed with death. He meets Wren who is a kindred spirit and wants to help him with his quest. I can't write too much more about this without spoiling, but it is as I've come to expect from Erica, beautiful and dark. 7) Hoarding. Ashley Todd. Goodness, this jeebied my heebies. Creepy and dank, I loved how this felt. Really well written. 8) Self-Harm. Summer Bosley. This was a great story of how this little known addiction can gain momentum. Brilliantly written. 9) Overeating. Tara Losacano. Sam craves food, it's an uncontrollable hunger. The type that is impossible to sate. The initial calmness of this story amplifies the ending more so. A fantastic story. 10) Drugs. Dustin Allen. One more hit. That's all that is needed. And the M.C will do anything to get it. An intense read! 11) Alcohol. Lula Von Goth. Written artistically and with flair, Lula handled this subject with grit. An ace story! 12) Risky Sex.Henri Noir. Goodness, Stacey craved sex with risk. Meeting up with like minded men she discovered not all risks are worth it. 13) Mine.Kleptomania ... 14) Porn. Megan Stockton. The very definition of F.A.F.O ... We follow Stuart who is newly sober. He finds himself addicted to sites, but all is not as it seems. This causes Stuart to spiral. A fantastic read! 15) Pika. C.Extreme. This one injected some humour and was a "fun" yet minging read. The Secret Sausage will forever be a thing. 16) Social Media. Bella Donna. I love the style of writing in this, the craving of affirmation from peers is a real thing, and Bella gave us an insightful look at this addiction with dire consequences. 17) Exercise.Phrique. What a story! This one was great. So in-depth and intense. Great story-telling and creative.
In the back there are helplines and sites for anyone affected by these issues. I'd personally like to thank the authors involved in this book for their empathy and professionalism when approaching such an intense subject matter. 🖤🖤🖤
