- mafia romance - dual POV - arranged forced marriage - addiction rep - “good girl” - war
If you want to read a quick, action filled, overall predictable mafia romance, this is the book for you! Don’t get me wrong, there are several surprises, but the general arch of the book is very standard for a mafia romance.
I came into this book not having read any of the previous books. With that, the book started very action packed and there were some surprises right away. I generally could keep up with information; yet, I could tell that a lot had happened in the previous books that I had missed out on since I have not read them. There were summaries of information, clueing me in that the summaries of content must have been from the previous books and now the author was reminding the reader of that information (for those who had read the previous books) or telling the reader to get the reader up to date (those who were reading the current book as a standalone). Overall, the author provided enough information for this book to make sense as a standalone.
There was a lot of depth to the MC’s. I saw what rough shape the MMC was in, deep in his addiction, which he coped with at the beginning by purchasing sex. I also got to see how depressed the MFC was at being sold to another family. I really liked both of them, the author wrote them to be relatable. She showed us their internal dialogue to better understand them and provided glimpses of their past to understand who they were today, all of which created empathy and compassion for these MCs. For both, I really appreciated that they understood that they had to do what they had to do to protect their families, as they were born into the mafia. However, they still had emotions, wanted to resist what their family said was required of them, and were willing to stand up for themselves. These were humans who had a balance of emotions and logic, and both grew quite substantially through this book.
I particularly loved how the MFC verbally told her family and the MMC her thoughts, not backing down, all while doing what she had to, I admired that. Then, we had the MMC who had a tough exterior and was emotionally numb, yet was an empathetic and thoughtful man, even though his behavior was quite brutal. I expected nothing less coming into a mafia romance.
This book was moderate to fast pace the whole time. Twists and surprises just kept coming. I was surprised at how much action and the author could put into such a short book.
This book was three stars because 1) although there were surprises throughout, the overall plot was quite predictable, nothing new, and 2) so much information was repeated, multiple times. I was wondering why the author had to repeat the same content 2 to 4 times when the book was so short. That space could have been used to add more grit or depth to the story, or create more diversity in the plot line. I read some other reviews and they wrote the same thing about multiple pieces of information being repeated throughout the story. Two times I wondered if I had not flipped the page because a paragraph on the next page was almost identical to the paragraph on the page prior. It was really confusing and I wondered if this was not edited.
CARNAGE is the first instalment in Vi Carter’s is a contemporary, adult, KINGS OF EIRE Irish Mafia romance series, set in the author’s MURPHY’S MAFIA MADE MEN series. This is the new Irish Mafia head William Murphy, and Aoife O’Rourke’s story line.
Told from dual first person perspectives (William and Aoife) CARNAGE follows in the aftermath of the murder of the Murphy patriarch, leaving William in charge when his brother refuses to take control, but William has been spiralling for years, an addict with demons of his own, the black sheep made to feel less than worthy. An arranged marriage between William and Aoife O’Rourke is meant to solidify their mutual powers but someone else is taking aim, targeting both families in the process. Determined to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love, William is about to take control, destroying anyone who gets in his way.
The world building follows several pathways including addiction and recovery; a potential link to the Russian Bratva; a possible mole, several attempted assassinations, and a woman who is about to lose more than she could have ever imagined. As the Russians close into the Irish territories, the Murphy’s and O’Rourke’s are forced to merge in an effort to protect their power and control.
The relationship between Aoife and William begins as an arranged marriage between two powerful Irish families but Aoife is a strong willed woman raised to be her own, only to discover she has been sold by her father for a shot at control. William continues to struggle with his own demons, spiralling into the depths of addiction and pain but with the help of our story line hero, William will rise, assuming control, taking down everyone who attempted to destroy them all. The $ex scenes are provocative and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, questionable, determined and twisted characters. We are introduced to Aoife’s brother Reilan, and their father Dillon O’Rourke; William’s brother Matty, Aidan and his wife Raven (Sinner’s Vow / Murphy’s Mafia Made Men) , and Jason; Frank O’Rourke, and Viktor Tarasov . The requisite evil has many faces.
CARNAGE is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, organized crime, secrets and lies, family and relationships, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is dramatic, detailed and dark; the romance is seductive; the characters are determined, diverse and dynamic. CARNAGE end on a happily ever after-for now. There is more story to tell.
Carnage was a fast, bingeable mafia romance that I flew through in a day. Vi Carter delivers all the tension you’d expect from an arranged marriage story wrapped in Irish mafia politics, addiction, betrayal, and possessive “touch her and die” energy.
Aoife has spent her entire life being shaped into something valuable to her family, only to discover that “valuable” really means tradable. She’s handed over to the Murphy family and forced into a marriage with William Murphy: volatile, emotionally damaged, struggling with addiction, and carrying the weight of a violent legacy on his shoulders.
What I enjoyed most was the dynamic between Aoife and William. Their relationship had a lot of tension, and I liked watching the shift from reluctant allies to something deeper and more obsessive. William is messy in a way that makes him interesting, and Aoife has more strength than people give her credit for. The possessiveness, emotional unraveling, and political maneuvering all kept the story moving quickly.
That said, I do think the story felt rushed at times. I would’ve loved more buildup and development before the HEA because I genuinely liked these characters and wanted more time with them together. Some emotional moments and relationship progression could have hit even harder with a little more depth and breathing room.
The twist toward the end definitely caught my attention, though, and it left me interested in where the series is headed next. Since this is part of the Kings of Eire world, I also think readers who’ve read the previous books may get even more out of William’s family dynamics and the larger mafia politics.
Overall, this was an entertaining, addictive read with solid chemistry, quick pacing, and enough intrigue to make me want to continue the series.

Ahhhh! This has everything we want in a dark mafia romance read, and I could not pull myself away from these pages! Soo Good!!
It’s quite possible in this world to be married off to someone you don’t know for political reasons, and Aoife is currently in that situation. William, brother to Aidan, Matty, and Jason Murphy, has been appointed to succeed their late father. William, however, is unsure if he’s ready for leadership responsibilities, especially given his ongoing personal struggles. He absolutely doesn’t need a wife to compound his stress. Because of their infighting, the Brennans, Walshes, Reillys, and O’Rourkes are not in a good position to combat the imminent Russian invasion for territorial dominance. Nevertheless, the Bratva has established a presence in their domain, and Viktor positioned himself to conquer it entirely.
The pages turned quickly as I fell into the betrayals, bloodshed, backstabbing, violence, and destruction depicted, anxiously awaiting William’s ability to keep clarity and sobriety while strategizing his survival. By no means is this a gentle read... It’s a dark, calculated, and deadly thing for those who betray the Murphy’s trust, regardless of who you are. Everything we love from this author's creative mind!! Soo good! The events Aoife is thrown into challenge her in so many ways, and her choosing William’s side was everything. Their connection was easy to enjoy, and I appreciated how she cared for him, and their chemistry was very entertaining.
I always enjoy stories from this author, as she is creative and her characters are easy to love. Reading in order is always recommended, and I encourage you to visit her other works, once done here. Worth your time, IMO. I was fortunate to receive an ARC (thank you) and happily leave my thoughts. I can't wait for more.
"You're not what I expected. You're better. In ways I didn't know to look for."
Once again, something was missing...
This may be a me thing and not a book thing. Seems to be that there is something missing from these stories. I can't put my finger on it. The storyline was good. The book itself wasn't too short, wasn't too long. Mafia hit just right. But just not right enough. At least not for me. However, with that being said, I liked this...to a sense...
"You bastard." "I know." "I hate you." "I know that, too."
I was left with questions. The epilogue didn't seem like an epilogue and the ending felt like there was more to come, maybe? Like it was more like a happily for right now and not forever. A cliffhanger that isn't a cliffhanger. Does this even make sense? Also, there was no actual love decloration. I mean, I don't need a sky banner or droid spectical of love everlasting, but a simple "I love you" would have sufficed. But alas, there was some sort of mutual love ish between the main characters, William and Aoife. Don't think that I am only saying "negatives" about this book. There were many positives. Two of which stood out to me: 1. the way William's detox happened and Aoife took care of him and 2. how there were no cheesy nicknames repeated 3635728262 times in the book. Thank you SO MUCH for that!
"Say it again." "I choose you." "I don't deserve that." "I know. I'm giving it to you anyway."
Overall, I am sure it looks like I didn't like the book, but I actualy did. I couldn't stop reading it. I am most definitely will be reading another book from this author and if there is a spin off/second book to this storyline.
This book is something else. The main premise of this story centres around Aoife's betrothal to William to secure the alliance between their families. But the meat of the story, and what kept me hooked was that both Aoife and William are battling their own demons, whilst also trying to fulfil the agreement.
William is an addict, who feels like he is drowning under grief and uses his vices to try and keep his head above water. While Aoife, who watched her mother wither away for years due to fear of what this life can do to her family; fears that she will become like her mother. But even amongst all of that, as well as the war that is hurtling towards them; Aoife and William manages to build trust, which gives way to love. It's this journey that we see them go on, which is what truly makes this book such a brilliant read; because it's not sugar-coated. It's brutal, and it's honest. Down to the betrayal, the secret that could ruin Aoife and William's relationship in the future if it's ever unearthed; and the functional dysfunction of their merged families.
For a mafia romance book, this is definitely one that is worth reading, if you enjoy this genre.

She will never bow to his will and he will love her for it all the more
CARNAGE is the fourth book in the Kings of Éire series by Vi Carter. From the first words you are pulled into a world that is brutal, savage, violent, powerful, and has all sorts of trade-offs. Aoife Siobhan O'Rourke is the daughter of of Dillon O'Rourke, the head of the O'Rourke family, Elder of the West. He has ensured she is brought up to be smart, educated, independent, and very valuable to his plans. She is twenty-six years old and about to find out just how valuable she is when her hand is promised in marriage to William Murphy. William is new head of the Murphy family, after his father was killed. He is no where near ready for this power and responsibility as he is drunk, cruel and irresponsible. But with the Russian moving on everyone's territory the families find they must unite and in this case it will mean a wedding. William expects Aiofe to be a "good" girl but what he finds is she is someone who does not cower from him, will not back down, will do what she wants, and is smarter then he is in most cases. He may never have wanted this marriage but he finds he cannot stay away, and will do anything to protect Aiofe.
Vi keeps you turning the pages in this book. Aoife is traded in marriage to strengthen a political alliance, becoming William Murphy's new wife. William is a bit of a player with the ladies, and an alcoholic and drug addict. Aoife lets him know how unhappy she is when he turns up late at their meeting to sign the agreement between the families. He likes a strong woman rather than one who panders to him as his one-night stands. Danger lurks nearby; someone knows about their meeting, and a tragedy is about to unfold. Aoife finds herself in the Murphy household for safety. But there is a mole in their midst. Will William be able to find out who it is before it's too late? I recieved an arc for my voluntary honest review from BookSprout for NN Book Blog. If you enjoy an action-packed Irish mafia romance, then you will love this book. I loved how Aoife stood by William through the good and the bad and see the person he was underneath and not who he was made out to be. However this book may not be for everyone therefore please heed the author's trigger warnings before reading or purchasing this book.
Another dark and delicious Irish Mafia read by this talented author that kept me enthralled until the end. William Murphy, a man battling dark demons, finds himself the leader. A arrange marriage of political alliance is necessary to strengthen his leadership. Thus, begins the intense love journey of Will and Aoife. I loved the strength and intelligence of Aoife as she moved from being a pawn in Will’s eyes to an ally that strengthened his power. Filled with family dynamics, emotion, betrayal, vulnerabilities, suspense, THYD vibes, and so many twists that kept me turning the pages. It was so satisfying to see love that is triumphant over everything. Fantastic read.

What an amazing story that grabs you right from the beginning with two power characters I didn't see coming. William and Aiofe are married to build a united front for their families, but what unfolds between them is so much more. Their devotion to each other and what they build transforms an arranged marriage into a force to be reckoned with. It is filled with thrilling twists and turns all centered around betrayal, hidden moles and a love so powerful it had me all caught up in William and Aiofe as I cheered them on.

I love a great arranged mafia couple and the drama that follows. l Th power struggle when you have two independent people like William Murphy mafia heir and his bride Aoife O’Rourke. A captivating story as William continues to have struggles of his own, then there's the war that's brewing, assassination attempts, secrets, lies and betrayal. This is a fast-paced story I love the witty banter and the dynamic between Aoife and William as they grow closer. His obsession grows and it becomes an obsession of "touch her and you die" to keep her safe. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love a good mafia novel and this novel checked so many boxes for me. I have read other novels by this author and really enjoyed them. This novel did not disappoint. I love a good mafia novel that involves a marriage of convenience to bring powerful families together. From the first chapter this novel pulled me in and held on tight. I loved Aoife and William's story. Their chemistry was intense despite their beginnings. Both have been thru so much. My heart hurt for Aoife and how she was raised to be a pawn in her family. Once I started reading I was on the edge of my seat reading to discover what was coming next. So good! I can hardly wait to see what is coming next.
I have been waiting for Williams book and I loved the plot and the story. However, the writing style was just not matching th other books I’ve read from Vi Carter. There were alot of incomplete sentences and lack of descriptive writing. Like “Boots pounding on the floor.” “Heart racing.” That kind of thing. It almost feels like it was written by AI. It was so hard to get through that I almost put it down. But I stuck with it because I loved William and wanted to see his story. Ill probably read the next one as well for the same reason with Matty. But yeah, the writing style was just a huge disappointment.
Carnage is hands down one of my favorite reads for the year. It's William and Aiofe's journey and it's a difficult dark story. William has struggles all his own and being thrust in to being the head of the Murphy empire doesn't help. Neither does being getting a wife that's being forced to marry you but Aiofe is a big surprise for everyone. Her loyalty to William and her defense of him is heartwarming. This story is filled with suspense, intrigue, drama, betrayals and secrets all which make a fantastic read! Absolutely a must read!
Did someone say arranged marriage and slow burn...sign me up. William our struggling MMC is thrust into being the head of the Murphy family which doesn't make his life easier. On top of all his struggles he is forced into an arranged marriage with Aiofe our FMC who has a surprise for everyone She might be forced into this marriage but she is loyal the her husband and defends him at every turn. This story offers suspense, intrigue, drama, betrayal and secrets which only make this a must read.
I received an arc copy from the author and this is my honest review
Prepare to fall in love! William and Aoife are anything but happy by their arranged marriage to create a new alliance to fight off a rival, yet what remains to be seen is that mesh like they were made for each other. While William battles with his demons, Aoife is the force to be reckoned with that brings out an inner strength in William. Will it be enough to win against their enemy and find their happily ever after? You have to read to find out and don’t expect to put the book down as there is no good spot to stop with the twists and turns in the plot!
Idk man - I probably honestly should have had the context from the other books but it explains enough so you’re following
things I loved: how she helped him recover that is was more drama than spice morally grey mmc vibes
things I was not into: so very repetitive, like we were told the same things over and over and over again the way it ended so abruptly chemistry was meh - but you could tell she loved him
It was good! and I maybe would have loved it if I read the whole series so that’s on me, but I will not.
Book four of the Kings of Éire series. This is William Murphy and Aoife O'Rourke's story. It's an intriguing story that pulled me in from the start. The characters are well developed and the storyline is exciting and intriguing. You get action from the start and from there it's a rollercoaster ride. I was hooked and couldn't put it down. Highly recommend reading. Look forward to reading more from Vi Carter.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, Vi Carter is the queen of dark Mafia romance. Aiofe and William are two very strong characters and they definitely complement each other's character. The relationship is what truly makes this book spectacular, but the twists and turns were what really kept me on my toes. These two have individual struggles, but together they absolutely conquer their issues. Fantastic book.

An arranged marriage has been set with Aoife O'Rourke and William Murphy to smooth over the bonds and barriers between two Irish mafia families. A dark romance read filled with danger, violence, power games, allies and enemies, passion and more. Just make sure you don't go into a read by Ms Carter without checking your triggers first. A fab read which certainly does have teeth.

I did enjoy this but it took me a bit to get in to it and connect with William and Aoife ( love that name). Neither of them want this marriage, it’s a business transaction. Forced proximity and mutual enemies who want them dead see them slip in to caring about each other, if they were just left alone to start married life together they would have likely just stuck to their own corners but instead they come out fighting as a team
William, the forgotten one, the screw up, the drunkard, the deep thinker who feels too much. In a world of fighting and mayhem, William is called to lead, to marry, to forge an alliance. What he didn't expect was to find a woman strong enough to see him and stand beside him.
Great story, wonderful characters, love the Murphy boys. Dark broody, young and intense. William has addiction issues and feels he has no worth. Aoife used by her father with a brother whose idea of protection is skewed. Family, love, hate, intrigue and danger all rapped up into a wonderful exciting story.

Survival William and Aoife must marry for an alliance between their families. Because an outside threat has targeted them. Will they be able to survive the marriage and find something besides anger to fuel them? Will that anger transform into passion, desire, and even love? Or will everything be blown apart and destroyed?!
This book is part of the Kings of Eire series. It’s an arranged marriage, slow burn romance. William and Aoife’s story is filled with drama and suspense. So many twists!
