“You realise what they will say if they find us here together, Your Grace.” “Yes, Miss Bramwell. They will say I must marry you.”
Society calls him the Beast of Akendale. She is the woman society has already cast aside.
Miss Helena Bramwell knows exactly how fragile a lady’s reputation can be.
After the accident that left her with a permanent limp, and a broken engagement whispered about across London drawing rooms, Helena has already accepted that society will never see her as desirable again.
The Duke of Akendale understands scandal far too well.
Years ago, a terrible fire left Henry scarred and reclusive. Since then, he has lived quietly on his estate while society whispers behind his back and calls him the Beast of Akendale.
When Helena and Henry are discovered alone together during a masquerade ball, those whispers explode into open scandal.
The solution is obvious.
Marriage.
Henry offers Helena a simple his name, his protection, and complete freedom within his household. In return, she will help restore order to the quiet halls of Akendale.
It is a practical bargain between two people society has already judged. But Helena sees the man behind the scars. And Henry soon realizes that the greatest danger is not scandal…
It is wanting the woman who was only meant to be his convenient bride.
A beautifully layered, slow-burn Regency romance filled with quiet yearning, tender moments, and the healing warmth of found family. Perfect for readers who love scarred heroes and strong, compassionate heroines.
If you’re drawn to character-driven historical romances with themes of redemption and second chances, "A Bride for the Scarred Duke" will truly capture your heart. This emotional marriage-of-convenience story unfolds into a love that stays with you long after the final page.
No cheating. No cliffhangers. Just a truly satisfying happily ever after.
A Bride for the Scarred Duke is a deeply tender and emotionally resonant Regency romance that explores vulnerability, societal judgment, and the quiet, transformative power of love.
Dorothy Sheldon crafts a story that thrives on emotional nuance rather than dramatic spectacle. Both Helena and Henry are characters shaped by circumstance each carrying visible and invisible scars that have distanced them from the expectations of society. This shared sense of isolation forms the foundation of a connection that feels both natural and profoundly moving.
Helena is a particularly compelling heroine. Her resilience in the face of social rejection, combined with her quiet strength and emotional intelligence, makes her journey especially rewarding. She is not defined by her limitations but by her ability to see beyond appearances both in herself and in others.
Henry, the so called “Beast of Akendale,” is written with depth and sensitivity. His guarded nature and reluctance to re-engage with society create a believable emotional barrier, making his gradual openness all the more impactful.
The marriage of convenience trope is handled with care, evolving into a slow burn romance filled with subtle tension, meaningful interactions, and genuine emotional growth. The pacing allows the relationship to develop organically, making every shift in their dynamic feel earned.
Overall, A Bride for the Scarred Duke is a beautifully written historical romance that will resonate strongly with readers who appreciate character-driven storytelling, emotional healing arcs, and love stories rooted in compassion and understanding.
This was a quick read for me, very light, clean, and cozy romance♥️♥️. I think I would rate the story a 4.6 or 4.7 ⭐️, but not exactly a 4. I would have wished to see more of our main characters. They shared moments in their library speaking about the books she was reading and that was totally fine; however, I would have enjoyed to see more of her as duchess in training. Maybe some more interaction with her sweet mother in law while learning how to be a duchess, assisting Henry with his duties as a duke, and more interactions between him and Helena such as taking walks together sometimes, having private dinner, seating in the gardens, etc. What I mean is, that I really wanted to see more of them building their relationship, having much more conversations as their feelings grow. However, I truly liked the story. I recommend it.
Another good book by the author. It’s always a pleasure to read her books who have strong women, a great storyline, and a happy ending. In this one, Helena Bramwell had an accident which left her with a bad leg. She meets and in finds herself along at a ball with the Duke of Akendale, Henry, who has a very scarred face and hands from a fire which caused the death of his brother. They go through some tough times with the Duke addicted to his painkiller and Helena falling in love and hoping he is as well. They get married to save face and start to get accustomed to building a life. The two of them both don’t think they’ll ever find love but maybe this time they will.
I enjoyed this story about 2 broken people forced into a marriage and then the story of them falling in love. It had Seeking Persephone and a little Beauty and the Beast vibes. The love of books is a must, and love at the end. This is my second book by Dorothy Sheldon and I would read more. Thank you Booksprout for the advanced copy.
The Duke, Henry, barely exists several years after a fire..and he meets Helena & society expects a marriage. She herself injured in a carriage accident..but they get along admirably & as love may grow someone sees that as a serious threat. And tries to do something about it..A great story.
Two people who have been “damaged” find each other in a scandalous situation. They marry not expecting much more than companionship, but feelings grow as they get to know each other. A villain appears to throw some intrigue into the storyline. There are some very supportive secondary characters. It was a read that played on emotions and hinted on drug addiction.
A Duke scarred from a burning building, and a woman crippled from a carriage wreck. Both are considered damaged and unwanted by the ton. Yet they found each other. The story is well written with enough twists and turns to keep your interest while reading. Enjoy!
I do enjoy these books. Thank goodness that times have changed & that women these days do not have to tolerate the Ton. Being alone in a room with a man was declared a scandal. It is a scandal that these rules truly existed. A thoroughly enjoyable book & I was glad that two broken people found each other & saw past the scars.
This was a nice story, but I do wish these books were proofread better. In the epilogue, there is mention of a child named Annabella next to her mother, and then suddenly her name is changed to Rosalind. There were other, more forgivable errors, but that was rather jarring.
Extremely wonderful journey full of adventure, mystery and romance. I love the characters and wonderful story line. Very entertaining and interesting from beginning to end. Love a happy ending. I definitely recommend this beautiful story. Awesome read!
This story was a little slow for me and thus it took me awhile to read it. The characters of Henry and Helena are to me a little boring and their relationship moves very slow. There is a little excitement near the end when a villian is revealed. It is a clean and sweet romance.
He is scarred and she is lamed, both forced together by society but found true love amidst tragedy, addiction but also acceptance. Enjoyed this book tremendously.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story is entirely too predictable. The characters are all dull and boring. I got fed up about half way through and skipped to the end. I need not have bothered.
Of course Dorothy has given us another amazing book of regency romance. This book has special characters who don’t fit in with society’s stringent rules but find great delight in each other.
The story reminded me of Beauty and the Beast, but a not perfect Beauty. I liked both the main characters and was happy that they found love. I wasn’t surprised by the villain. An enjoyable read.
