The cover caught my attention. “فاقد الشيء لا يعطيه” is a sentence often used in Arab culture. Meaning a person cannot give what he has never had. If we are speaking in a worldly sense, for example, someone who does not have money to spare, clearly cannot give it, because he never had it in the first place. The context in which the sentence is used, however, is not materialistic. The sentence refers to feelings, emotions, ways of expression, etc. Someone who was never loved as a child, cannot love a child, since they were never taught how to do it properly. The book works on showing how people who were not given love could be the ones giving it better than anyone else. The book provides a good sense of awareness for readers about how you cannot judge a book by its cover (an ironic thing to say given that I was attracted to this book because of its cover). People tend to shun people, and even animals, on the street just for the mere fact that they are homeless or strays (in the case of animals). They do not take a moment to think: "how did they end up here?". The book takes the reader through 3 (4 including the introduction) stories about the life of individuals on the street, each from their perspective. In the introduction, the reader sees things through the perspective of a working woman who despises beggars on the street. She also hates a dog that always stays near the gate of her office building. The security guard shoos the dog away but it does not work, so he throws a rock at him to scare him away, and the dog blindly runs off, getting himself run over by a car. I personally feel like this is very graphic early on in the book for a child to read, but perhaps the author intended to trigger the reader’s emotions to address the seriousness of the stigma towards stray animals and individuals on the street.
The first character is a dog, taken away from his family as a puppy then left on the street somewhere far away from his family where he finds himself to be lost. He then moves from one owner to another, but all that he can think about is how much he loves anyone who treats him nicely, despite being dismissed by so many people and mistreated by many others. He then meets the second character, a homeless boy.
The book changes to the boy's perspective and we are given a glance at his tough life on the street as a tissue box seller. Despite the tough circumstances that the boy is in, he promises the dog that he will take care of him, shares the little food that he was with the dog, and lets him sleep near him. He then meets a man who buys him a book and asks him about how he got on the street. The boy was abused by his father and forced to leave school to work to provide for himself and his father. One day he has had enough of the abuse and ran away to never come back home. He has been on the street since, but he only wishes to go back to school if he could. The third character is a strange old woman that sleeps near a trash bin that the homeless boy searches for food in every day. Before meeting the dog, the boy always avoided that old woman, thinking to himself that she is weird and probably crazy. He only saw her whenever he went to search for food, and at some point, a strange plastic bag full of fresh food started showing up next to the trash can, but surprisingly, the woman would never take it. The boy felt ashamed of how he felt towards her, and he realised that the dog approached him and became his friend and loved him unconditionally without judging him the same way that people do, only because he lives on the street. He decided to approach the old woman and get to know her.
The book then switches perspectives again, now from the point of view of the old lady, and we learn about her story. She was kicked out of her home by her own son and his wife after her husband died, and she had nowhere else to go. She struggled to find food, but one day she got a job in a nursing home, cooking for the elderly and helping them. When she saw the young boy looking for food in the trash, she decided to cook for him every day when she is at the nursing home and leave the food for him near the trash. The boy then tells her his story, he also tells her how he was offered help by a man who took the time to listen to his story one day, but he refused to go back to school and leave the dog behind. She then tells him how she can take him, and the dog, with her to this woman that she had met that needed a stay-in nanny to help her around the house and in raising her daughter. The book ends happily for all three characters, living together, the old woman has someone who cares about her to look after, the boy going back to school, and the dog has people that love him and look after him. While the book’s language was very simple and understandable for a child of any age (with the ability to read, of course), I feel like it is too direct and dark for a child below the age of 10 to comprehend. However, the topic addressed in the book is very important for children to have awareness about. Kids need to learn not to judge, and to know that there are stories behind the faces that they see, even when they know nothing about them. I also like how the book had a happy ending for the characters, to kind of give the reader reassurance and make up for the very dark introduction, while also letting the reader know that in real life, it is not always this jolly. It mentions how in real life, things could be tougher and harsher. So, the least that we could do is be kind, and show love to others, especially those who we do not know anything about.
