I did not want this book to end! Flag on The Play was such an emotional ride.
Odelia went through something no one deserves. She came home early and found her boyfriend cheating on her. I have to say I resonated a lot with her. She’s in school for teaching, got cheated on, and didn’t have a place to go. So naturally, she called her twin to ask for a favor. Oliver was absolutely dramatic but in the cutest ways 😂😂
Griffin is popular because he’s a football player but feels more like a loner. He would rather stay home than go out. When Odelia moves in he’s a mix of awestruck and an ass. I guess that’s what happens when you fall first and HARD!
The issue is, Oliver had one rule.. leave his sister A L O N E. Love doesn’t work that way.
There is some miscommunication but not a miscommunication trope. Griffin is a little more emotionally lost than others but once they talk, man do they fall HARD.
This is the kind of love that everyone wants to find one day. I was sad but thrilled to finish the book and absolutely HONORED to be an ARC reader for this story. I legitimately could keep going on about Flag on the Play but I guess I’ll just end with.. go get it on August 9th!!!!!

I was completely charmed by the football house and everyone in it.
Odelia and Griffin completely pulled me into their story. I loved the football house setting, the college atmosphere, and especially the found-family dynamic between all the roommates. There was so much warmth and fun woven through the story, and the banter had me smiling more than once.
Griffin took a little warming up to, but watching his feelings for Odelia slowly develop was so satisfying. Once he finally stopped fighting it, he was completely gone for her, and I loved his protective and supportive side. Their slow-burn connection felt natural, and I really enjoyed how much focus was placed on their emotional relationship.
The football aspect was another highlight, and I loved getting glimpses into both Griffin’s passion for the sport and Odelia’s love for teaching. Add in the friendships, roommate chaos, and all those little everyday moments, and this was such an enjoyable, feel-good read.
I am definitely curious to see what comes next for this group.

ARC Review
This was my first read by T.L. Akermann and I will definitely be reading more of her books!
Flag on the Play is a football college romance and I was hooked from the very first chapter! This was written so well and I couldn’t put it down! I loved how much this story actually focused on the sports side of things for the MMC Griffin. We got the school side of the FMC Odelia studying and volunteering to be a teacher. And all the banter, tension, forced proximity and romance in between.
Odelia moves into the football house with her twin brother and his best friends/teammates following an ugly break up. She was off limits (brother’s rules) and quickly became friends with her brother’s teammates minus Griffin. Griffin was thrown off by her presence and didn’t want her there. He’s the grumpy football player that doesn’t like change and things getting in the way of his number one priority…football. He was not expecting his best friend’s sister to come barging into his life and shaking things up.
I absolutely loved this story! There was so much to it other than Odelia and Griffin. All the banter between the roommates had me laughing so much. There was great tension and I loved that this was a closed door romance because you don’t see that too often in sports romance. It was done very well and focused more on the emotional connection between Odelia and Griffin. I highly recommend this book if you love sports romance with great side characters. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!!!

This was such a good book to get me out of my reading slump. An enemies to lovers storyline has my heart and this book captured it so well!!

This is Odeila and Griffin’s story, and let me tell you….by the end of Chapter 1, I was already rooting sooooooo much for Odeila. The final line of Chapter 1 set up the story perfectly. And not more than a few more chapters in, I was already so excited to get to know the rest of the Football House guys (looking at you, Derek!
If you love sports romances set in colleges, I’m confident you will like this one (unless you have to have all the spice). The majority of sports romances I read do have spice, but I have to say, this story was so delightful that I was kind of glad for the fade to black. It allowed so much more time to get to know all the characters.
After discovering her boyfriend with another woman in their apartment, she runs off and slowly realizes she has nowhere to live. Never fear, though, because her twin Oliver offers her the spare room at his house–with his three other football player roommates. Are all the guys happy about this? Well… You’ll have to read to hear about Odeila’s integration into the house.
There are a few things I absolutely LOVED about this book.
The found family in this book was top tier! I noticed some hints at future books, and I will be keeping track of those releases as well. There were so many fun moments with ALL of them, and if you ever enjoyed trivia nights or movie nights or karaoke nights, you will enjoy those moments even more.
The book spends a good amount of time exploring the actual game of football. The game scenes are exciting to read–even if you don’t know anything about the game. Not all sports romances include this (which is totally fine–this is just an observation). I found myself really enjoying that part.
Aside from the football aspect from Griffin’s POV, the book shows Odeila in her element of the teaching world. As a fellow teacher, it was so sweet hearing how excited she is to be a teacher. Watching her interact with some young people was such a fun part of the book. I like the balance of seeing them in their separate spaces apart from just with each other.
Finally, I enjoyed that I didn’t have to suspend disbelief with the pacing and feelings of their romance. Again, I love reading books where I DO have to suspend disbelief because those are fun and crazy in their own way. However, I didn’t realize how much in the mood I was for a genuine progression of feelings between characters. It almost felt like the author was sharing a personal experience. There was some conflict for sure, but there wasn’t drama for drama’s sake.
I WILL be going back to read the Bailey Brothers series before the next one in this series! Can’t wait.

It was my first book of T.L. Akermann and for sure I am down for all upcoming series of Maple Valley University...
Flag on the Play was such a delightful surprise and exactly the kind of college sports romance I love to sink into. It had all the tropes I enjoy, including forced proximity, brother's best friend, grumpy/sunshine dynamics, found family, and a slow-burn romance, but what really made it stand out was the heart behind the story.
Odelia immediately won me over. After a difficult start, she finds herself living in the football house with her twin brother and his teammates, trying to piece her life back together while pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher. Watching her regain her confidence and discover her own worth was one of my favourite parts of the book.
Griffin was a character who grew on me more and more as the story progressed. At first, his grumpy and sometimes frustrating behaviour made him difficult to warm to, but it became clear that much of it stemmed from his inability to process his feelings. Once he finally embraced them, he transformed into one of the most supportive and caring heroes I've read recently. His protectiveness, loyalty, and unwavering belief in Odelia made their relationship feel genuinely earned.
The romance develops at a natural pace, allowing the emotional connection to take centre stage. I especially appreciated that this is a closed-door romance. Rather than focusing heavily on physical intimacy, the story invests in building trust, friendship, and emotional vulnerability between the characters, which made their relationship even more satisfying.
Beyond the romance, the real highlight for me was the Football House itself. The banter, friendships, movie nights, trivia games, and chaotic roommate dynamics created a wonderful found-family atmosphere that made the story feel warm and comforting. Every supporting character had a distinct personality, and I found myself becoming just as invested in them as I was in Odelia and Griffin.
I also enjoyed how the football aspect was woven into the story rather than simply serving as a backdrop. Griffin's dedication to the sport and Odelia's passion for teaching gave both characters depth outside of their romance.
Overall, Flag on the Play is a charming, emotional, and highly enjoyable sports romance filled with lovable characters, genuine character growth, and a wonderful sense of family and belonging. If you enjoy college romances with strong friendships, a swoony slow burn, and a hero who falls hard, this is definitely one to pick up. I'm already looking forward to returning to this world and spending more time with these characters in future books.

Odelia forms a beautiful bond with Oliver and his teammates, finding a sense of friendship, comfort and belonging when she needs it most. They help her see the person she truly is, rather than the person she has been made to believe she is, especially by her mother.
Griffin is the grumpy, focused athlete who seems to have only one thing on his mind: football. He’s been raised to believe that perfection is the only option, and that pressure has shaped so much of who he is. But I loved how Odelia was able to see past the athlete and really notice Griffin for the person underneath.
What I loved most about their relationship was how naturally it developed. Nothing felt rushed, and their connection slowly built through all those little moments where they began to truly see and understand each other. Griffin notices things about Odelia that everyone else seems to overlook, her caring nature, the way she is always looking out for everyone, her passion for becoming a teacher, and the work she does volunteering with underprivileged children. He sees how much she gives to others, even when she doesn’t always recognise her own worth.

What could have been a completely chaotic situation, one girl moving into a house full of football players, turned into something incredibly warm and special. This story follows Griffin, a football player in college, who lives with 3 of his teammates, affectionately known as the football house. When Odelia walks in on her boyfriend on top of another woman, her twin brother offers his spare bedroom, which happens to be the football house. Griffin is very put out with Odelia’s presence in the house so much so he treats her pretty poorly. As the story moves forward they grow closer.
Odelia was going through it, she was cheated on, made to feel small by certain family members, she didn’t have a lot of people in her corner. And even when she also opened herself up to potentially being with Griffin, she then had all eyes on her from the jealous girls around campus. It was during these times that Griffin really shined, helping to constantly remind Odelia why he chose her.
Griffin’s behaviour at the beginning of the story was questionable. It was like he had all these feelings, didn’t know what to do with them so he just outwardly made it everyone else’s problem. His reactions to things, in the beginning, did not match his internal monologue, he was thinking one thing and saying another. Once he worked through his feelings and finally acknowledged he had feelings for Odelia, he could do no wrong. He was supportive, possessive and protective over Odelia to anyone who disrespected her in his presence.
I liked this book, it was a fluffy, feel good book that was just super easy to read. The twin relationship and found family in this story was so cute! I don’t know why, I didn’t know or realise this was a closed book romance, which I don’t mind, but it threw me a little when the scene jumped, as the author previously in the book did not shy away from other areas such as use of swearing and the detailed kissing scenes. Again, it didn’t lessen how much I enjoyed the story.

My Thoughts: Ohhh, this was the perfect book for me as football season is one of my favorites and my twins have started football practice this week. Flag on the Play was my first by T.L. Akermann, but it will not be my last as I need to check out her backlist now.
My heart broke for Odelia after the devastating betrayal by her now ex-boyfriend set the stage for her story. Odelia’s relationship with her twin brother, Oliver, was one of my favorite parts of the story. He was there for her from the moment she found herself homeless during the first few weeks of the semester. (As a twin mom, it always warms my heart to see a thriving twin relationship!!) Though she didn't plan on moving in with her brother and his three roommates from the football team, it was such a pivotal choice for her and where life would take her.
Griffin is the grumpiest of grumpy roommates and wants absolutely nothing to do with Odelia moving in—especially since they'll be sharing the upstairs. But, oh my, when this boy fell, he fell hard. I loved how he always had a mind to protect Odelia, whether against her ex or her parents, but also leaned on her when he needed to slow down his thoughts.
This house was fun and had some of the best friendships. It reminded me of my college days living in a house with some of my very best friends, still to this day. I NEED a story between Ollie(Odelia's best friend) and Oliver, like yesterday. But I'm also very excited to see what else is in store for these roommates as the series continues.

My Thoughts: Ohhh, this was the perfect book for me as football season is one of my favorites and my twins have started football practice this week. Flag on the Play was my first by T.L. Akermann, but it will not be my last as I need to check out her backlist now.
My heart broke for Odelia after the devastating betrayal by her now ex-boyfriend set the stage for her story. Odelia’s relationship with her twin brother, Oliver, was one of my favorite parts of the story. He was there for her from the moment she found herself homeless during the first few weeks of the semester. (As a twin mom, it always warms my heart to see a thriving twin relationship!!) Though she didn't plan on moving in with her brother and his three roommates from the football team, it was such a pivotal choice for her and where life would take her.
Griffin is the grumpiest of grumpy roommates and wants absolutely nothing to do with Odelia moving in—especially since they'll be sharing the upstairs. But, oh my, when this boy fell, he fell hard. I loved how he always had a mind to protect Odelia, whether against her ex or her parents, but also leaned on her when he needed to slow down his thoughts.
This house was fun and had some of the best friendships. It reminded me of my college days living in a house with some of my very best friends, still to this day. I NEED a story between Ollie(Odelia's best friend) and Oliver, like yesterday. But I'm also very excited to see what else is in store for these roommates as the series continues.

She spends her spare time assisting with a program for underprivileged kids in Maple Valley and is an aspiring teacher on a scholarship. She gets home early one day to find her boyfriend, Harrison on the couch with his ex girlfriend. Now she’s homeless. Olive gives her the option to move in to the football house with him and some of his team mates. What could go wrong?

I love the amount of detail and back stories in to each character. A great book that focuses on Griffins challenges as a football player and also Odelias challenges as a studying teacher.

This was bad, like really bad. Sometimes it felt like some things were not supposed to be where they were or maybe it was poorly edited. Like, Griffin and Odelia talked about how she perceived herself physically and two chapters laters they had the same conversation all over again, as if the previous one didn't happend. Same thing happened on a couple of other occurances.
Don't make me start on the dislike to love trope when Griffin actually thought she was so beautiful that it could become problematic for him to leave next to her.
Chemistry? Zero, I felt zero tension, no connection nothing that made me want to continue reading, except to see where this book was going and guess what? It went nowhere.
They had one tiny tense moment, then he 'saves' her from her ex, they kiss and they get together.
The rumors on the video? A small useless appearance in one or two chapters, then forgotten completely. Odelia's brother and his constant claim he didn't want his friends to hit on her? Forget it, he gets a three second lash-out against Griffin and then friends as usual. Don't make it a big deal out of it for more than half a book if it becomes another useless things that makes up a not that great book.

With nowhere to go, her twin brother offers her the spare room in the football house with him and three of his teammates. She quickly becomes best friends with Derek, much to Griffin's annoyance. Griffin immediately realizes that Odelia is going to change his life. He just isn’t sure how. He is really grumpy at first and is kinda rude, trying to ignore his feelings until he finally admits them to her. Trying to respect his friend's wishes, he tells her nothing can happen. Well, that doesn’t last long at all
I loved Odelia and Griffin’s slow burn because it didn’t feel too drugged out. Once they both truly admitted their feelings, they were all in.

I really enjoyed Odelia and Griffin together. Between the forced proximity, their initial clashing, the tension, and all those little moments where their feelings begin changing, I was completely invested.
I also loved the found family aspect. Odelia isn’t simply falling for Griffin—she’s finding this unexpected little family and a place that begins to feel like home.
It was just SO GOOD.
This is one of those romances I finished and immediately wished I could experience again as a first-time reader.

Odelia (Deli) is the FMC who ends up needing a place to live and moves into “the football house” with her twin brother Oliver and his three best friends, Griffin, Derek and Hunter. She quickly develops a strong friendship with Derek, the star quarterback, much to Griffins annoyance. Griffin, the MMC knows there is something about Odelia from the first time he sees her. He’s quite broody, and grumpy/standoffish at first because he’s trying to fight his feelings for her.
I loved the slow burn of this and how gone Griffin truly was for her. Once he was all in, there was no second guessing his feelings for her. Their chemistry together was great to read and happened in a very organic way. One of my favorite things about this book was when they’d all be hanging out together, watching movies or playing trivia. The banter and conversations. Their arguments were so entertaining. I really enjoyed this book a lot. I can’t wait to read more!

This is a forced proximity, strong dislike to love, he falls first and twin brother’s best friend. Odelia comes home early to her apartment she shares with her boyfriend and finds him with his ex. She leaves but more than just an apartment she leaves her planned future that she shrunk herself to fit into. She moves in with her twin brother Oliver and his football teammates (Derek, Cole and Griffin). Griffin is not excited about a change in rhythm, control and distractions and having to share his bathroom with a girl. He shows his dislike with his sour attitude and complaining that she walks into. Thankfully, Derek becomes a new best friend and another brother and helps her navigate the roommate situation and gets her out of her break up funk. The Football House becomes a loud, chaotic and delightful home for all of them. The guys benefit from a mother hen and she benefits from the unapologetic attitudes, ease and chaos of the guys. This is a lot about found family, making the most of where you are and realizing what you actually want out of life instead of what you have charted for you.

This college sports romance focuses on Odelia/Deli/Ham who after discovering her boyfriend cheating on her with his ex-girlfriend has to find somewhere else to live
Her twin brother suggests she should move into the available room at his football house that he share with 3 teammates. I loved the dynamic that develops in the house as the guys adjust to having her living with them. She becomes fast friends with Derek, QB1. Griffin, her brother’s best friend, is unexpectedly jealous of the close relationship between Deli and Derek, and he gets grumpier. He seems to vacillate between strongly disliking her proximity to desiring more of her attention.
The romance that develops is sweet and emotional. Griffin is so much more than the grumpy loner he appears to be. He opens up to Deli and lets her see his most vulnerable parts.
This was an enjoyable clean read. I felt the ending was a bit abrupt and would have liked to see an epilogue or two to see where life took these two.

Odelia and Griffin had me hooked from the beginning. I loved their grumpy x sunshine / forced proximity dynamic, especially watching Griffin go from “I absolutely cannot stand her” to completely gone for her. The way he tries so hard to resist her while simultaneously wanting to protect her? Yeah… I ate that up.
The house full of football players, chaos, unexpected friendships, and found family added so much charm to the story. And Griffin’s internal thoughts about Odelia had me SWOONING. The man may not say much, but when he does?
I also loved that Odelia challenged Griffin instead of tiptoeing around him. Their chemistry felt natural, and the little moments—late-night conversations, stolen glances, and accidental touches—were some of my favorites.
Sweet, entertaining, swoony, and exactly the kind of sports romance I was in the mood for.
I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the rest of the Maple Valley University series!

I have to say that their is NO SPICE in this story so if you like your romance with steam then this isn't the book you would want to read.
it doesn't bother me I honestly didn't recognise their was little spice until I thought about it at the end..lol.

This is when she encounters his house mate football player Griffin,who falls hard and fast for Odelia as time goes by.
I loved the banter and the sweet moments ,the funny moments,the awkward moments, and the love story that evolves between Odelia and Griffin.They have chemistry but if anything would happen between them it would be forbidden because of Oliver the brother and team mate.

Flag on the Play by T.L. Akermann was such a fun and entertaining college sports romance! I really enjoyed the chemistry between the FMC Odelia and MMC Griffin. Their grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers dynamic had plenty of banter, tension, and those little moments that kept me turning the pages. I especially loved watching Griffin’s softer side come out as he and Odelia got to know each other. The forced-proximity setup added plenty of fun and awkward moments, while the friendships and found-family atmosphere made the story even more enjoyable. Between the two characters, my favorite was Odelia and how she navigated unexpected changes in her life, and I loved seeing her find her confidence and happiness along the way. Overall, Flag on the Play was a great start to the Maple Valley University series!

This book was very much a cutesy, college football based romance book. The twin bond between Odelia and Oliver was probably one of my favourite parts, along with the mention of both my favourite NFL team (the Green Bay Packers) and my favourite artist (Taylor Swift).
My favourite character for sure was Derek and I loved his friendship with Odelia. I also very much enjoyed how much detail was put into the football scenes compared to other books I've read.
However, as for the main romance plot line I have to say I wasn't the biggest fan. It felt extremely rushed and at best indifference to lovers rather than enemies to lovers. I did almost DNF when Odelia got a tattoo for Griffin after just one date though. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was about 100 pages longer with a bit more depth and slow burn.
Overall a cutesy little football read that I did mostly enjoy.

A fun college football romance
First off, I love that the guys playing trivia was included because it's something unexpected. Second, I about died laughing at one of the team names because my Monday night trivia team name is Tequila Mockingbird. This entire storyline was such a fun addition as it gave more depth to the characters.
As for Griffin and Odelia, I thoroughly enjoyed watching their relationship evolve from mutual dislike to love. It was done in such a way that it didn't feel forced. I had to chuckle when they tried to hide their relationship from their friends, but Hunter and Ollie knew, because, of course, they did.
My favorite character was Derek because he was just over the top, but not obnoxiously so. He was another perfect bestie for Odelia. And then there's Oliver and Ollie; those two were hilarious together, and I can't wait to see them both knocked on their rear ends in book two because it'll be fantastic!

And then there's Oliver and Ollie; those two were hilarious together, and I can't wait to see them both knocked on their rear ends in book two because it'll be fantastic!

Four of my favorite chapters (which was difficult to narrow down) was 11, 14, 15, and 17. The entire story was well written. It was difficult to put the book down as I read it over the course of 2 days. T.L. Akermann did an incredible job giving just the right amount of detail involving the main female character and main male character. I enjoyed getting to know the other characters as well in addition to their relationships with one another.
This book brought me back to college which felt right. As an avid sports fan myself, I recommend this sports rom-com book to anyone who enjoys these tropes.
Without giving anything away, I was quite surprised later in the book with something that took place as I didn't see it coming. Chapter 56 kept me on my toes and it was the fastest chapter that I read by far.

This closed door football romance made me think about young love and how it feels to fall in love.
Odelia comes home early to find her boyfriend cheating on her and she has to call her twin brother for help. She moves into the football house with her brother and his three friends. Her brother has one rule and that is no one can touch his sister. Griffin is her brother’s best friend who would rather stay home than go out and is known to be a grump. He has his routines and having Odelia in the house is throwing him off. Living in this house of chaos Odelia gains new friends who become family and slowly knocks down Griffin’s walls.
The tension between Odelia and Griffin is delicious and I was rooting for them to be together for so long. He falls first and harder which I love in an MMC, and watching him come around to the idea of love melted my heart. Griffin is one of my top football book boyfriends and I was sad when I finished the book because I wanted so much more of these characters. Can’t wait for this series to continue.

Griffin and Odelia
Flag on the Play is such a easy read. Griff and Odelia (Deli) are forced to share a bathroom because who doesn't love a Jack and Jill bathroom layout which could pose a problem. When we first meet Odelia she walks in on her now ex doing some things with his 'ex' girlfriend. And we're off to the races with tears. Odelia doesn't know what she is going to or where she is going to live. But her twin makes sure she has a roof over her head. What starts off as an inconvenience becomes more. It becomes a slow burn of a friendship between these two who enjoy the quiet in the chaos.
These two learn about one another in the moments over the months and she is there at his games rooting on her twin as well as rooting for Griff (and the other boys in the house). They become a found family.
I am really looking forward to seeing the next pairing as this was a great first book in the series.

It’s book one in the Maple Valley University Series and it didn’t take me long to become invested in the characters and their journey. This author is fairly new to me and I’m struggling to understand why we haven’t crossed paths sooner.
Odelia moves into the football house her twin brother lives in after an ugly breakup, looking for some moral support the last thing she expects is have a grumpy Griffin giving her problems. The other guys have no problem with her being there so why can’t he …..maybe his grumpiness is because he is attracted to the one woman who is off limits.
This well written story drew me in and didn’t let me go, I smiled at the witty banter, I swooned at the sizzling chemistry and I found myself cheering this couple on as I watched them dance around their feelings.

ARC Review
This is my first book by T.L Akermann and I would easily read more! This book would not have been something I would normally grab on my own, so I am glad this opportunity came across my lap as it opened my eyes to a new book trope: football romances! As an avid hockey romance lover, it was a fun change of scenery.
The writing of this book is fantastic, easy to read, easy to follow. I was hooked the first couple pages. Instantly felt connected to the characters and rooting for the main FMC to leave her ex in the dust like she was my own friend.
Think of New Girl, meets Off Campus but football?? I was giggling, was gasping, I was in my feels. I was invested.
Easily a book I would recommend to my friends and family as I know they would enjoy it. If you love sport romances and characters you can’t help but root for, add this to your TBR

Flag on the Play, the first book in the Maple Valley University series, is a football, hate-to-lovers, brothers’ best friend, and fade-to-black romance that follows the main characters, Odelia and Griffin, during their college years. Odelia is forced to move into her brother’s football house after her boyfriend cheats on her and kicked her out. Griffin, one of the three roommates, is the tight end for the football team and initially doesn’t like Odelia when she moves in. His priorities are football and finishing school, so he doesn’t initially want to like or fall in love with her.
However, as they keep running into each other at the house, they connect on a deeper level, share their truths, and after some drama, they confess their feelings for each other. As their relationship progresses, they face external challenges, including not sharing their feelings with her brother, drama from her ex-boyfriend, and self-doubt.
While I didn’t find the book particularly bad, I felt it lacked depth and connection between Griffin and Odelia. The transition from hate to confessing their feelings felt too quick, and the story felt one-dimensional. I also had to remind myself that this was a new adult/college book, as some of the drama felt immature at times.
Overall, this book wasn’t my favorite, but it might appeal to readers who enjoy sports and new adult romance. I appreciate the author agency for providing me with an ARC for an honest review.

Griffin is a bit of a grumpy individual, but I loved how he showed his grumpiness more when first being around Odelia. He is fighting his growing feelings and interest for her and we can see the struggle to not act on this because she is the sister of one of his friends and housemates. The whole dynamic of the house was fantastic. It seemed like everyone had their purpose and it brought them closely together. I really disliked Odelia's parents (most specifically the mother). I was glad she had some people willing to stand up for her and put them in their place. Griffin and Odelia were perfect together and brought out the best in each other.
