Sarah Gallego is an author of dark fantasy romance who lives in North Wales with her husband and four children. Sarah is the author of the Star-Crossed Duology. She loves to create unforgettable flawed characters and dark, gothic worlds, with an inclusive cast of characters. Her stories are always filled with the weird and wonderful and she adores to throw in a small dash of heartbreak for her characters along the way. When she's not writing, Sarah can be found drawing, listening to an eclectic mix of music and drinking copious amounts of tea.
Oh, my goodness, this book. A huge thank you to the #Netgalley, #SecondSky and #SarahGallego for the advanced copy, because I was absolutely not ready for the emotional rollercoaster this one put me through!
The story takes off straight from the events of the ending of book one, with Sorrow and Matthias having to navigate the consequences of the decisions and actions they made. They’re dealing with grief from betrayals, the loss of loved ones, losing their home and their thrones, all while facing an empress who is vile and will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
One of my favourite things about this book was getting both Sorrow and Matthias’s points of view. It gave so much more depth to everything happening, and I loved seeing how differently they processed the same events. Watching them both deal with their grief, guilt, and everything they had lost made me even more invested in their journeys.
The romance in this book was everything. Matthias’s yearning and his attempts to earn Sorrow’s forgiveness had me completely hooked. After everything they had been through, seeing him fight for her trust again was emotional, frustrating, and honestly so satisfying. The tension between them was incredible, and their journey felt earned rather than rushed.
We also get introduced to some brilliant new characters, and the banter between Sorrow and one particular character had me giggling (you’ll know when you meet them). I had a feeling I knew who they were, but then another layer was revealed that I genuinely wasn’t expecting. I loved how questions that had been lingering since the first book were finally answered, and everything came together for such an epic finale.
I also must mention our sneezing Pablo, Sorrow’s loyal wolf who helped her navigate her sight loss, gave her independence, and was there when she needed him most. What a good boy he is! My heart!
If you loved the first book, then you already know this duology delivers action, angst, humour, heartbreak, and twists. Throne of the Wolf Queen raises the stakes even higher and is such a satisfying conclusion to Sorrow and Matthias’s story.
And that epilogue... honestly! I had to DM the author just to jokingly tell her off. After everything these characters went through, I was so happy to get one final glimpse into their future, even if it left me sitting there with all the emotions. Saying goodbye to these characters was not easy, but this duology ended exactly how it needed to.

Throne of the Wolf Queen is one of the sequels I was MOST anticipating this year, and I enjoyed it ALMOST as much as the first one. This book is the second half of the epic love story between Sorrow and Matthias, set across the backdrop of a war-torn fantasy world, a big bad set on destroying the world, and some very complex family dynamics.
The story between Matthias and Sorrow really focus on his efforts to make up for a huge betrayal and to earn his way back to her side, all while she is trying to save him from the consequences of that betrayal, to learn how to use her powers, and to save the world. That's a lot to pack in to a single book, and honestly, each of these three narratives have such widely different arcs that it sometimes resulted in pacing issues. The beginning of the story dragged while what should have been the last quarter of the story was crammed into half that amount of real estate.
I loved the new characters introduced by this second installment, especially Hawk. I did not love the drama with Matthias's mother, and I think his perfectly valid feelings about it were not handled well. I think the first book did a better job of handling the "real world" issues with more care. I was also surprised to reach the end of the book without any real resolution to the "out of balance" issue that was such a huge feature of both books.
In other words, I enjoyed the destination, but couldn't always enjoy the ride. Still, I'm glad to have found this duology. I loved Matthias and Sorrow's story, and I think that the epilogues were bittersweet perfection.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Second Sky for an ARC in exchange for my honest assessment of this work.
After absolutely loving book one, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Throne of the Wolf Queen, and for the most part, it really didn’t disappoint.
Matthias and Sorrow’s story is one filled with complex emotions, betrayal, tests and twists, and I really enjoyed getting both of their POVs throughout the book. I think it worked really well for this story and gave us a chance to understand both of them and everything they were dealing with.
There were a few moments, though, where I felt the bigger events could have had more impact. In particular, what happened with his mum felt like such a HUGE moment, only for it to be almost dwindled down to nothing. I really wanted more from that storyline because it had so much potential to hit hard.
I absolutely loved the introduction of Hawk. I thought his familial connection with Sorrow was brilliant, and although I did figure out the truth about him fairly early on, it didn’t take anything away from the story for me. I actually enjoyed watching it all unfold knowing what was coming.
And obviously… Pablo 😂 I will forever love his almost human-like responses. He really is one of my favourite parts of these books. I also loved seeing the progression of the side characters, especially Enfys, Asher and Skye, and getting to see their stories develop alongside everything happening with Matthias and Sorrow.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable conclusion to the story. While there were a couple of things I would have liked to see explored a little more, I still loved the characters, the twists, the emotional moments and the world Sarah Gallego created.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and Sarah Gallego for the opportunity to read this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

after really enjoying book one, i was so excited to dive into throne of the wolf queen, but unfortunately i didn’t love it as much as i was hoping
the story starts off quite slowly, and i found myself a little confused in the beginning. there wasn’t much of a recap, so it took me a while to remember what had happened in the previous book and settle back into the world
one thing i really enjoyed was getting both sorrow and matthias’ povs. since they’re apart for a lot of the story, it was nice to know exactly what each of them was experiencing rather than being left wondering
for me, the world-building felt quite limited this time around, and because of that i never felt fully immersed in the story. i also struggled to connect with the characters as much as i did in book one, which made some of the emotional moments fall a little flat
the ending wrapped up much quicker than i expected. i did love the epilogues and getting little glimpses into what happened after the final chapter, but i couldn’t help wishing there had been a bit more development before everything came to a close
overall, this was still an enjoyable read with some great moments, but it didn’t quite capture the magic that made the first book so much fun for me
I both loved that this was only a duology and also hated it because I was not ready to leave this world. I absolutely loved the worldbuilding, the magic system, and all of the characters. As sad as I was to reach the end, this was such a well crafted duology that it ended on exactly the right note.
Book two starts off strong and never lets up. I absolutely devoured this book because I needed to know what happened to King Matthias and what Queen Sorrow was going to do next. And let me tell you... Sorrow was coming for her man! 👏🔥
The ending was both perfect and completely heartbreaking. 😭💔 I definitely cried.
But I have to give a special shoutout to the epilogues. I was absolutely obsessed with both of them, and they left my heart so full after everything these characters had been through. 🥹❤️
I already know I'll be rereading this series.

⭐️ Rating: 5 Stars 📅 Pub Date: September 30, 2026 💛 Thank you to Second Sky and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
Throne of the Wolf Queen brings this duology to an emotional, satisfying close, picking up right where book one left off as Sorrow and Matthias grapple with grief, betrayal, and the loss of their home and thrones, all while facing down a ruthless empress. Gallego's writing remains easy to read and modern in tone, and getting both Sorrow and Matthias's POVs adds real depth, letting you see how differently they process the same trauma. The romance is a highlight — Matthias's efforts to earn back Sorrow's trust felt earned rather than rushed, full of yearning and tension that pays off beautifully. Sorrow herself is a great heroine, navigating near-total blindness without ever feeling defined by it, with her loyal wolf Pablo stealing hearts throughout. New characters and long-awaited answers from book one add great payoff too. A few readers may find the pacing uneven — the start feels slow with minimal recap, and the ending wraps up faster than expected, with world-building feeling a touch thinner than book one. Still, the epilogue lands perfectly: bittersweet, honest, and true to the characters' journeys rather than a too-neat happily-ever-after. A worthy, heartfelt conclusion to Sorrow and Matthias's story.
Thank you to Second Sky books for the opportunity to read an eARC of Throne of the Wolf Queen by Sarah Gallego vía Netgalley.
The first book in this duology was one of my favourite reads from earlier this year so I was really excited to get stuck into this follow up and conclusion.
The story picks up pretty much right where book one left off, with the Empress sitting on Matthias' throne controlling him and Sorrow back in her old home with her sister on that throne.
The story starts off at a slower pace but then picks up halfway through and the action keeps coming. I enjoyed the story being told in the dual POVs of Matthias and Sorrow so you get to see both sides of their journey. I also liked the introduction of Hawk although I won't spoil his significance! The Empress is delightfully evil and a worthy villain for Sorrow to face off against.
Sorrow remains a great FMC, she is a strong and capable leader and what I liked about this story is that she never lets her vision problems hinder her and it's never miraculously cured because it doesn't need to be. Sorrow is who she is because of her lack of vision and it doesn't make her weak.
The epilogue is perfect and an emotional yet beautiful way to end a fab duology.
4✨I enjoyed this book it was a lot different from the first one being it was more focused on the fantasy side than the romance. Which I was a bit disappointed by but other than that I had a really good time read it. My love for Sorrow and Matthias on how they both overcome difficulties obstacles to find their way back to each other! Sorrow is nearly fully blind but it doesn’t stop her from trying to find and get her husband back! Matthias being captive to serve as a puppet has made him feel hopeless and the guilty for getting the tattoo that cursed him even if he doesn’t remember giving consent for it. Loved that we find out more about Sorrow family that I wasn’t expecting! Pablo I love this wolf so much! He’s the heart and soul of the book his loyalty and love is everything!
Spoiler warning! ⚠️ ⬇️
Sooo sad at the end with Pablo! 😭 I had to hold my tears in! I’m just glad he had an amazing life before he passed away!
Thank you NetGalley & Second Sky Books for the arc! 🫶🏼
What a bittersweet journey - this is the last book in the star crossed gods following are Matthias and Sorrow. Thank you NetGalley for the arc - I absolutely loved book one and this one was no exception.
I will say this did have a different feel than the first book though. It’s always hard to write a story where the FMC and mmc our apart for 1/2 the book and I did find that aspect hard as I missed there banter and them together. The first half was slower for me due to that and was more about the quest aspect and political intrigue. The 2nd half really ramps up and I will so miss our loveable Pablo the wolf and I felt the conclusion of the book to be great and quite heartwarming. I wasn’t ready for it to end. Some aspects of the story I still want more of.
The author has an Amazing way of words and beautiful writing and I look forward to what she will write next.
Star crossed lovers. Vengeful gods. Hatable villian. New characters introduced. Yearning Dark magic Secrets uncovered
This book picks up where Heart of the Wolf Queen left off. It would be helpful to read them back-to-back, because it took me a bit to remember what had taken place in the first book (that's on me).
I found the first half of the book a bit slow, and the second half had a lot of action, but in ways felt rushed. I also struggled at times to actually know where they were - I felt like they would be in one place, and suddenly in another with nothing really noting them travelling in between.
The story was emotional, and had a beautiful ending - the Epilogue made me cry. Of course, Pablo remains one of my favourite characters from the duology.
Thanks to Second Sky, NetGalley and Sarah Gallego for the opportunity to read this ARC.
After reading Queen of the Wolves as an ARC, I was so excited to return to this world, and Throne of the Wolf Queen did not disappoint. This sequel felt bigger in every way, with higher stakes, more political intrigue, and plenty of emotional moments. I loved being back with Sorrow and Matthias and seeing their journey continue after everything they endured in book one. Their relationship was filled with longing, heartbreak, and hope, and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way. The world building expanded beautifully, and I especially enjoyed uncovering more of the history and secrets surrounding the characters. There were several surprises along the way that kept me turning the pages way into the early hours! And can we take a moment for Pablo? What an unforgettable companion. 🐺❤️ A fantastic continuation of the story and a very solid 4 star read for me. I’m so glad I got the chance to return to this world. 📚
I was sooo looking forward to this after book 1 and ended up with mixed feelings. While the politics and world building were less - partly to be expected in the second book of a series, it just felt a bit flat. Getting to see Hawk's complex character was the only real source of interest in the character arcs. I loved the variety of personalities and stories and individual side stories in the first book, and this one really kept to the main characters only. Most others presented as black or white, villain or part of the "good guys", making it a bit predicable/slow moving at times. The end (last 10% of the book) was a complete whirlwind that left me with whiplash. While everything gets wrapped up it almost felt like it was a separate book given how quickly things escalated and rules changed. I still highly recommend the first book and if you loved it, then read this to the end as you get to have the HEA vibes - but the middle part just lacked a bit of substance for me.

I was so excited to get back to Sorrow and Matthias after Heart of the Wolf Queen, and overall I really enjoyed this conclusion to their story!
This one definitely has a slightly different feel to the first book, with more focus on the fantasy, politics and the fight for their kingdoms. Sorrow and Matthias spend quite a bit of the book apart and I did miss having them together (give me the banter!), but I really liked having both of their POVs and seeing what each of them was going through.
I also loved the new characters introduced in this one - especially Hawk! I won't say too much because spoilers, but he was such a good addition to the story.
The first half was a little slower for me, but once things got going, they REALLY got going.
And obviously I can't write this review without mentioning Pablo. Best boy. Always.
I loved being back in this world and I'm genuinely sad to say goodbye to these characters.
When Second Sky and NetGalley dropped the second book in my inbox as an ARC I yelped and ran straight to my kindle to download it. After finishing that explosive ending of Heart of the Wolf Queen I had been gagging for the next to find out what happened to Sorrow and Matthias. I was not disappointed!
Throne of the Wolf Queen tied up this duology in the most satisfying way, with turmoil, pail and tension all along the way. Sarah Gallego did give us some heartfelt, sweet moments to balance and I am grateful for them. That epilogue? Beautiful and heart wrenching all in a few paragraphs.
The pace differs from the first with Sorrow and Matthias on different journeys, as well as fleshing out of new characters. (The empress? Loved her as a villain).
Honestly, a fantastic duet with fantasy, political intrigue and "Where's my wife!?" energy.
If you’ve read the first book in this duology, then you know it was a whirlwind filled with action, angst, laughter, and more. I think that applies to this one even more so. Throne of the Wolf Queen gives us the conclusion to Sorrow and Matthias’s harrowing journey. Gallego’s writing style continues to impress, being easy to read and more modern in tone. The epilogue stays very true to the characters’ journeys: their future is not wrapped up in a neat little bow. Would I say it’s a HEA? Absolutely. But not in the way that all of their problems are solved with love and a sprinkle of magic. And I think that’s beautiful in its own way. First-person, dual POV Spice: 🌶️1.5/5 Overall, 5 stars.
This is the perfect conclusion to this duology though I still hope we might get a little spin-off with Matthias‘ sister 😉
The pacing of the story was amazing. The story continued right were we left off and there was not a single letter too much. I love how the author added even more layers to Sorrow‘s characte and also shows her struggles as so many don‘t want to accept her. I also really like that she does not simply master her powers by some magical turn of fate but in a last minute do or die situation. Matthias is the defintion of love and yearning. Oh my Gosh I love this guy so much. He would give everything- even his life- for her. It was really interesting to see them work through their problems.
This was a great read and I can‘t wait to read more by this author.
What a follow up to Heart of the Wolf Queen! I loved this second book just as much as the first!
In this follow up and second in the duology, Throne of the Wolf Queen picks up where HOTWQ left off. Yes, we’re still mad at Matthias, but this book takes us on a journey of redemption, forgiveness, and fighting for those we love. And another defying of the Gods is a nice touch too.
TOTWQ will make you scream, laugh and cry. We get more quality time with our favorite wolf Pablo too. I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to a duology. The epilogue will make you tear up, but only in a good way. You walk away from this story happy and satisfied.
Many thanks to Second Sky Books and Netgalley for the ARC to read and review.
Loved book 1, was quite a memorable read from earlier this year. I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much (slower start, a little harder to get into until about half way). But still enjoyed the read!
Really liked the gothic vibes, tension with political intrigue and the second chance romance.
💔 Second chance 💍 Marriage of convenience 👑 Political intrigue 🩹 Disabled FMC Rep 🐺 Animal guide 💕 🔮 Hidden and dark magic ☠️ Touch her and die energy 🫂 Found family
I actually enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Was nice to go back into Sorrow's world and have a MMC that isnt perfect and has a disability but can still overcome everything life throws at her. Some points felt a bit rushed but still made sense, plus the epilogue is sad but happy to see how they are after everything
This was the absolute perfect conclusion to the duology! I loved that the story picked up right from where book one left off, we were provided with a recap at the beginning, it gave a nice overview without getting bogged down in too much detail.
I absolutely adored Heart of the Wolf Queen it was easily my favorite read back in March, so I fully expected this to be my top read for July. While it didn't quite hit that top spot, I felt like something was missing and because of this it took me a bit longer to read than I expected (I kept picking it up and putting it down during the first half), the second half of the book was completely superior in my opinion. Once it kicked into high gear, we discovered so much juicy information, the plot really took off.
Sorrow navigating the fallout from book one while trying to reclaim her place and power kept the stakes dangerously high. And the yearning... ahhh, don't even get me started! Matthias would literally do anything for Sorrow's forgiveness, and watching him try to earn it back made the emotional tension so satisfying.
The epilogue was pure perfection. Sarah did our baby Pablo absolute justice and it actually made me cry! I truly don't think she could have written a better ending to wrap up their story.
📢 A massive thank you to NetGalley, the publisher (Second Sky), and the author, Sarah Gallego, for providing me with an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All opinions are entirely my own!
Throne of the Wolf Queen picks up right where the first book left off, with Sorrow and Matthias separated and basically everyone miserable and yearning.
And then there’s the Mariner. WHO IS THIS MAN??? What does he know? Why is he so mysterious? Every time he appeared, I had about twelve new questions and absolutely no answers.
I really loved Sorrow in this book. She’s thrown into such a difficult situation, but she navigates so much of it with a kind of strength and grace that made me love her even more. And when she and Matthias finally reunite, it is every bit as emotional as I wanted it to be.
What really worked for me, though, was the way the story kept opening up as it went. The plot became so much bigger than I expected, and the way certain truths were revealed and the real evils at play were exposed was so well done. It made everything from earlier in the story click into place without feeling like we were just being handed a giant explanation at the end.
And that epilogue??? I was SOBBING.
PABLO!!! 🥹
Such an emotional and satisfying conclusion, and I loved getting to see where all of these characters ended up.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I want to thank the author and NetGalley for the ARC! I absolutely loved this one. The story kept me hooked from beginning to end, and I really enjoyed how everything developed throughout the book. Emotional, exciting, and such an easy five stars for me.
