RELENTLESS, EVEN IN RUINDragged back into the present after a battle in a warped past, Wu Xingxue carries the scars of a timeline that should never have been. Xiao Fuxuan brings the weakened archfiend to Fly-On-By to recover, but the hideaway offers little refuge--especially when Feng Xueli, the new archon of Nightgleam, arrives at the gates ready for a fight. The schemes of a long-hidden enemy are dragging them all into dire conflict. Amid the turmoil, the truth of Wu Xingxue and Xiao Fuxuan's shared past finally emerges. They share a bond that transcends good and evil, tested by time and tribulation--and desperately needed now as they face impending doom.
And to think that all of this began simply because people were, and still are, so greedy for a tree.
This volume thoroughly delivers on every aspect. The first half was packed with revelation after revelation, each moment building anticipation and curiosity. However, the second half took on a vastly different tone, filled with sorrow and emotional depth.
The narrative in this volume primarily revolves around two intertwined timelines, the present and the past, which are so seamlessly connected that the story shifts between them swiftly yet coherently. This technique worked remarkably well, the author did an exceptional job linking each scene from the present with corresponding moments from the past, ensuring that every single event was meaningfully connected across both timelines.
Wu Xingxue stands out as such an endearing protagonist. Despite his admirable efforts to make others feel safe, he endures immense suffering himself, and I know that his pain will only deepen as the story progresses. His self-sacrifice and relentless desire to protect others often lead him to make impulsive decisions, sometimes without considering the opinions or feelings of those around him. Near the end, he did get on my nerves because of his stubbornness and tendency to prioritize others’ safety over his own well-being.
Xiao Fuxuan, on the other hand, is my favorite love interest. His gentle spirit, combined with a detached demeanor, makes him an incredibly compelling character. His unwavering devotion, intertwined with his own pain, signifies that he is willing to endure suffering gladly for the sake of love. His character evokes a profound sense of heartache within me, as I witness his struggles and sacrifices.
The relationship between Wu Xingxue and Xiao Fuxuan is marked by teasing, laughter, agony, and longing, an emotional rollercoaster. Their shared past is profoundly tragic, the years that slipped by and the cruelty inflicted by the heavenly principles moved me to tears. All they ever longed for was to live peacefully together, yet that simple wish was denied to them. They endured numerous hardships, partings, and reunions, that only intensified their love over time. Their recognition of each other’s souls, regardless of who forgets whom, is beautifully depicted and deeply touching.
In conclusion, this volume easily earns a five-star rating. I am eagerly looking forward to volume 4.
if i were an author, i would say that selling millions of copies isn’t true success. nowadays, with clever marketing and strategies, it’s easily attainable, and many people achieve it. for me, true success means writing a story that can resonate with the soul of a reader. a book capable of altering the course of someone’s life, a story that leaves one breathless with wonder. unfortunately, this kind of writing is few and far between, but i’m fortunate enough to have found the right book. calling it just a “book” wouldn’t do it justice. it is something that has consumed my entire being. i could try to write a long, comprehensive review, but mere words would never be enough. not to sound dramatic, but how can i simply write a few sentences and say, “yes, this is how i feel,” when those emotions are etched so deeply into my heart? i find it incredibly difficult, but i’ll still try my best.
just when i thought this series couldn’t get any better, mu su li went ahead and proved me wrong. when it comes to romance, i genuinely don’t think there’s anything better than danmei. these authors and their works are truly monumental. so far, i’ve finished most of the popular danmei series, some happy, some heartbreaking, some that constantly kept me on edge, but not a single one made me feel the way shang xian did. it’s so different, even the writing style is second to none. some of the other books i’ve read feel very explicit in their storytelling, everything is laid out clearly, the romance, the plot, the direction the story is heading. you can easily think, “yeah, this is inevitable.” but this book is elusive. it constantly keeps the reader in a dreamlike state. everything is subtle yet deeply nuanced, filled with whimsical narration and dreamy lines. i don’t even know if i’m making sense, but it’s the kind of book you 'feel' more than you read. to truly understand and enjoy it, you have to see through the eyes of the protagonists. you have to live through everything with them, otherwise, it may not fully make sense and could even feel boring. (nah, i’m rambling too much. let's move forward.)
human greed knows no bounds, and it all began because mortals tried to exploit the powers of a divine tree and disrupt the natural order. in this volume, we finally get answers to so many lingering questions. we finally learn how wu xingxue fell. his journey from celestial to fiend, how he came to exist in this world, his mysterious connection with arbor divinus, blossomfell terrace, and many other things. we learn how he lost his memories, how he became separated from his beloved xiao fuxuan, and how both of them spent those long three hundred years more like lost souls than immortals, two people torn apart by fate’s cruelty, constantly and unknowingly searching for each other.
wu xingxue is truly an entrancing character. i dare say he is one of the best protagonists ever written. when he discovered how the heavenly laws had deceived and used him to maintain the balance between good and evil, he gave everything up without hesitation. his godhood, his safe haven, and most importantly, the person he loved most. to free mortal souls from suffering, he willingly walked through hell himself. his self-sacrifice and unwavering resolve are truly admirable. he is someone who prioritizes everyone else’s well-being over his own happiness.
and then there’s xiao mian, hands down the best danmei gong ever. he is often described as reticent, detached, and solitary, but he wasn’t always like that. before everything changed, he had a completely different side to him, at least only when it came to wu xingxue. they wandered the mortal world together, laughed together, and loved together. but heaven’s cruelty made him forget the only person who had ever truly mattered to him. without even realizing it, a piece of his heart went missing. he forgot the face of the person he loved most, those beautiful days spent together. during his hundred years of proscription, he tried every single day to remember that face while enduring the pain of a hundred thousand swords. his unwavering devotion, his suffering, and his pain are enough to make anyone’s heart ache. he is truly a character defined by endurance. there is no one like him. he has my entire heart.
both xiao fuxuan and wu xingxue share a fated connection, as if they are two flowers blooming from the same stem. their lives, their existence, past, present, and future are all intricately intertwined. they are two people who simply cannot exist without one another. they face countless challenges together, amnesia, separation, and even the conflict born from their very natures as god and fiend. yet they continue finding their way back to each other. they embody the beautiful resilience of love. even when heavenly principle itself stands against them, two fated souls will always find their way back.
i’ve been going on for quite some time, yet i still have so much more to say, so please bear with me. this volume also gave us many other interesting revelations. for starters, we finally learn the origins of wu xingxue’s two little underlings, and honestly, i love those two silly little fiends so much. a tiny spoiler here, when our doctor removed the black mask and dispersed his soul, i was genuinely devastated. i’ll really miss him. we also finally get the truth behind the feng clan. and although it’s not canon, y’all should know there’s a shizun-disciple dynamic here. some events occurred that left the shizun with lifelong regrets, and he is undoubtedly a thorn in the path of mianwu’s happiness.
i feel like talking even more, but i doubt anyone is reading this far, lol. so i’ll wrap it up with just a few more lines. this book changed my life. it made me experience the entire spectrum of human emotions. it is beautifully written, and i genuinely cannot find a single fault in it. yes, some parts may feel a little confusing at first, but now i have a better understanding of everything.
if you want to read a beautiful, heart-wrenching tale of love and endurance involving two immortals, a god of penance and the most fearsome archfiend, then this book is for you. please show some love to mianwu and read this poignant tale. ★: 5
i want to share some of my favourite quotes and moments with everyone. there are too many, at this point, i fear i’d end up quoting the entire story.
their breath collided. wu xingxue opened his lips a fraction and felt xiao fuxuan’s voice vibrate between them. “wu xingxue, i dreamed of you last night…” he whispered. the gods did not dream, yet xiao fuxuan had said, “i dreamed of you.”
it was because each time they saw one another, their hearts swelled with fresh delight, like a couple of kids just falling in love. the great rex spiritus and the tianxiu immortal—who would’ve thought?
“i’m waiting for you to leave,” wu xingxue said. xiao fuxuan stared at him. “and once i’m gone, who will you pass this tribulation with?” wu xingxue’s heart leaped as though someone had gently jabbed it with a finger. a soaring feeling engulfed him, and he couldn’t find the words to answer. a long moment passed before he closed, then reopened his eyes. “no one,” he said quietly. “there’s no one else.”
“did you know that fiends are driven by carnal desires, xiao fuxuan?” “i do.” “you knew, and yet you still chose to come here today.” “am i to understand that you want to be a guest behind this archfiend’s bed curtains?” “yes,” he said. i’ve come to be a guest behind your bed curtains.
“dare i ask, if another hundred years or three hundred years or even more go by, and i want to come take a stroll in the mount blossomfell bazaar, will you come with me?” “i’ll remember.” “i asked if you would come with me,” rex spiritus murmured as tianxiu filled his space. “what do you mean ‘i’ll remember’ what will you remember exactly?” “i’ll remember to make sure you honor it,” he answered. “a gentleman must not go back on his word, not for a hundred years or three hundred years or even more.” he raised the silver-filigreed mask to shield them from the lanterns, then turned his head and kissed rex spiritus.
he wanted to say, xiao fuxuan, i might not see you for a long time. i wonder if i’ll ever hear you call me “wu xingxue” again. once upon a time, beneath a sky brimming with stars, they had kissed just like mortal lovers. in the blink of an eye, two hundred years had passed them by.
at the end of the road, fortunate mortals had homes to go back to, but wu xingxue would never see the person who was his home again. at the end of his journey, he had no home to think of but xiao fuxuan.
he stared at the idol’s blank face, but he could not remember. he must have forgotten something. a piece had gone missing from his world. for nearly three hundred years, it would not be whole again.
over the years, he wore many disguises, becoming a series of passing strangers in xiao fuxuan’s life. wu xingxue stared at the hand that had once intertwined with his in moments of passion, overwhelmed by a sudden rush of complicated emotions. it was so strange. two hundred years had gone by, but he still wanted to tease him, wanted to see the aloof tianxiu make exceptions for him over and over again.
every day, he felt the inexplicable sensation of ten thousand swords piercing his heart, and every day, it faded back into calm. the entire world experienced the expungement of rex spiritus only once, but in that place so far removed from the rest of the world, he was deleted over and over again. as long as the erasure was incomplete, the process would begin again. and so a full century passed.
it was an odd, contradictory feeling. he merely had to stand before the valley of laments to feel this powerful sense of longing, yet he knew that who he longed for wasn’t anyone carved into a statue below. he did not know who it was he missed, but whenever the yearning surfaced, he felt as if he would never be happy again.
but as his gaze collided with xiao fuxuan’s through the night’s mist, it struck him that a hundred years truly was a long time—which in turn made their eyes’ contact all too brief.
the tianxiu immortal was meant to slay fiends. he would someday receive a heavenly edict to descend to the mortal realm, and then they would meet in battle. sometimes, wu xingxue found himself abruptly preoccupied with imagining that inevitable meeting. when would it happen? and where? would it be in nightgleam or that inescapable twilight fen? he imagined many places, but the images were always blurred—like a perpetual cold mist and endless silent nights. what would xiao fuxuan’s sword sound like as it cut through the air toward him? when their reunion came, it was unlike anything he’d envisioned.
there was no longer any need for wu xingxue to wonder what might happen if he encountered xiao fuxuan. even after one hundred years, if they walked past one another on the broadest avenue and their eyes should meet, nothing would come of it. they would be no different than any two strangers in the world passing each other by.
he heard xiao fuxuan’s deep voice. he said, “wu xingxue, what do you look like without your glamour?” he said, “wu xingxue, i want to see your face.” until that day, no one had remembered the rex spiritus who’d been expunged from existence. yet there’d always been one person in the world who never once mistook his eyes. 🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷
I can understand why some people might have some trouble with how this whole story is written. It isn't entirely linear a lot of the time and, in this volume, the whole final quarter is a flashback, and overall the flashbacks can come and go quickly enough that it can be confusing.
But, personally, I like how Mu Su Li writes their relationship and bond. The world feels fantastical. The relationship between Wu Xingxue and Xiao Fuxuan is beautifully tragic and it's in this book, specifically, we really get to see just how in love with each other they are.
Love the gentle relationship between Wu Xingxue and Xiao Fuxuan. They are amazing, I love them both. Especially Xiao Fuxuan. He's giving immense Lan Wangji vibes.
