"The gracious Messiah Corporation keeps us safe in the Cities. The Vigilantes want to destroy our home. The Neutralizer must be stopped" - a special message brought to you by Vox News Tonight
The City is one of twenty pockets of humanity left after the world went to nuclear war and climate change ravaged the planet.
Leo is an undercover journalist that exposes "straight" men having affairs in the Messiah Corporation.
Garrett, Leo's fiancé, is the City's beloved Serpentine Serpent. He keeps the City safe from the Vigilant League. Six villains that go against the six heroes regularly.
Ngaio is the Neutralizer and Leo's best friend's brother. He is the number one Vigilante and wants Garrett gone.
Leo's world collapses when Garrett breaks up with him and the Messiah Corporation tries to murder him. The Neutralizer comes to save Leo from his demise and the veil is lifted from his eyes.
This was a really fun, wild, spicy and fast roller-coaster of a read. I think the world the author built was really cool with its combination of corporate superheroes (think The Boys) in a dystopian setting. We have our two MMCs Leo and Ngaio who get together after Leo's dick of a "superhero" BF Garrett breaks up with him but finds out they were not only dating as a corporate stunt but that essentially Garrett had ill intensions towards Leo. Ngaio has been on the sidelines to pick up the pieces during and after the breakup and was waiting for someday his chance to show Leo he deserved better. I think their dynamic was really cute and they had great banter and chemistry. I also really enjoyed Leo being friends not only with Ngaio's sister but also his father who was also really hopeful they would end up together. It seemed like the whole family was just chomping at the bit to welcome Leo not only into the family but the family business and it was so sweet.
Now I will say that depending on the type of reader you are the size could work for you or not. What I mean by that is like I said this is a wild adventure of a book with so much packed into it. With smaller novels like this you can be constricted by the size by how much you want to do. This is a story with so much packed into it that it has to be really fast paced so your just along for the ride, but it also means that personally for me some scenes weren't built out or we and the characters weren't allowed to sit with anything before the next big event happened. For me I enjoyed the story and the characters, but I would have preferred if the pacing had been dialed back just a little bit.
Overall, I found the story & characters to be entertaining, and the world building made sense. This book does end on a cliff hanger so I am intrigued as to what will happen next in the story.
----- This book is about Leo who is a journalist in a post‑apocalyptic world where only twenty Cities survived where his city falls under the control of the Messiah Corporation and their superheroes one of whom is Serpentine Serpent also known as Garrett who is in a relationship with Leo. But being in a relationship with a superhero is never easy with the missed dates and being kidnapped by his nemeses the Neutralizer from the Vigilant League. But Leo put up with it because he loved Garrett but then out of nowhere Garrett not only breaks up with him but accuses him of cheating on live TV with his best friend's brother Ngaio, he didn't think it could get any worse. That is until Messiah corporation send Garrett to kill Leo and he finds out that their whole relationship was a corporate stunt. The only reason he is able to escape is when he is rescued by none other than the Neutralizer. It's only when he is living with the Neutralizer and his team does he see what the Messiah Corporation had done to blind its citizens with its superheroes all so that no one would see the truth of their corruption.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Short, sweet, and spicy! This queer dystopian romance with a superhero twist had me hooked from page one. I devoured it in a single sitting.
My favorite parts were when our main character Leo was spiraling after everything that happened to him and Ngaio was always there to support him, reassure him. Ngaios whole family was my favorite. They was they rescued Leo, treated him like one of their own. Rooted for the two of them to get together. Also, this book had me laughing several times which is rare for me when reading. So thank you for that!
The story follows Leo, a journalist whose life is turned upside down when he’s dumped by the city’s favorite hero, Garret. Things go from bad to worse when Garret lies about their relationship and puts a target on Leo’s back. He soon discovers that his friend and her family are part of the city’s infamous villain group, and as he learns the truth about their secret identities, he also uncovers the dark reality behind the corporation controlling their world. Together, they set out to expose the truth and take down the people in power. All while falling love with his best friend’s brother, Ngaio.
Will be patiently waiting for the next book because I need to know what happens next!!
Fantastic 4, Super hero’s. But make it Gay!! A queer MM romance superhero style. Written by a talented Queer, indie, bipoc author. A triple threat if you will. Noel did an amazing job writing this book. It was entertaining in so anyways. A love story. A superhero tale. A stand against a broken society. A homage to immigrants and those who are constantly othered in so many ways. This tells a beautiful story of everything is not what it seems. To remember no matter who you are you deserve love and happiness. He showed examples of dealing with mental health issues. Societal norms pushing you down. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. There were also some spicy and intimate scenes. Check out Cupids Broken. A novella that is action packed and full of so many important and inspiring moments.
Leo just wants his boyfriend to show up, for their dates, to rescue him when the city’s villain captures him. Thankfully when his boyfriend flakes, his best friends come to his rescue, in more ways than one. Soon there's heat between Leo and his friend Ngaio. Leo has to question who he is and work through the hurt and pain and loss, just to decide where to pick up the pieces, and Ngaio is there to help. This is a LGBTQUAH story of love and finding oneself. Even in your darkest of times. I highly recommend this book. Noel Alvarado is great at writing witty banter and spicy scenes! And who knows, he might even get you cheering for the “villiain” of the City.
This is the story of Leo, and how he lost himself, and his journey to finding out who he is again.

How has Noel Alvarado packed so much into his novella, Cupid's Broken? I don't know, but from page 1 the story is a wild ride. This futuristic, dystopian, good vs bad, speculative fiction is funny, exciting, and spicy. But at the same time it's full of deeply moving narrative on relationships, trauma, loss, and love. In this world filled with heroes and villains, who is actually evil? The story is filled with wonderful queer representation, mental health representation, and more. This is book 1 of the series and what a fantastic teaser for hopefully many more stories to come in this incredible world.
A more detailed review to come, but for now I will say I loved every moment of this book. The friends to lovers the political and the fantasy and super hero rivals. It does have some spicy scenes and as a non romance reader I was sweating 🥵 but in a good way. It has found family and it's queer. I couldn't ask for anything else!
Cupid’s Broken: Volume 1 was a lot of fun! This queer, sci-fi novella was quick to read, but really good. The “hero” is actually a horrible person, while the “villain” ends up saving the main character, Leo. The romance is very cute and very spicy. The story, world building, characters, and superhero aspect were all fantastic and left me wanting more! 10/10 recommend!!
The premise of this book really drew me in, and I jumped on the chance to read it. I loved the action and adventure, as well as the queer representation. The superhero / villain elements were intriguing, but more than that, I really liked the underlying elements of loss and love. The trauma that these characters have gone through have really prescribed where they fit into that hero / villain narrative.
Unfortunately, the whole story fell a bit flat for me. I would have liked to see more background and descriptions of who the corporations and heroes/villains are, and why they are at odds with one another. A few of the characters would appear for a scene or two, fight, then disappear. The background on these characters was missing for me to fully buy into their roles within the story.
In addition, one of the background characters had a name change partway through, which left me confused and thinking "Who the heck is ___?" I ended up searching through the document to figure out what the original name was.
All in all, I would definitely read more from Noel, but I would definitely like to see this story fleshed out more.
