🜲 Characters 🜲
We're getting our beloved characters back from Volume I. This time, with some other characters blended in between, which made this book feel like a fever dream in some parts, hilarious in others, and so doomsday-like in others. I loved seeing the characters' growth and development.
⚔︎ World-Building ⚔︎
Most of the story we're spending it in the netherworld, and boy, what a world that was. These people had NO peace even in the afterlife, which made me chuckle because that's how I imagine hell to be lol. While that detail was funny for me, the world was not a funny or friendly place, the details were giving me the creeps, and made me love even more these two volumes because the author takes you from a normal world to something unspeakable.
♡ What I liked/Disliked ♡
I loved every single bit of this book. It was really captivating, from the world-building to that detail at the end that lets you know how much time they've lost. It made me sad when they started talking about everything that has changed. I was such a fool to think they wouldn't lose time!! Ah, anyway, the story does end with happy ever after, even tho along the times you will think the end is near. So, hold on tight, spider monkey, when you pick these up!

The potential triggers list from this book and others can be found on the author's website. The romance is soooooooo sweet, and transcends the living and the dying - literally, and I loved, loved that! There's also some spice, but the spice is not the main focus on the story is just a bonus. I'd say the spice is around 3.5 pepper flames.

Ms Cradit does it again! No...she outdid herself! This 2 book saga, captured me entirely. Ellovan' and Jesstin took command of me and didn't let go...their story wrung me like a rag. The end of the previous book ended catastrophically, gut wrenchingly so. Conspiracies come to a head, manipulations are exposed, truths hit harder than punches at the events that took place at the end of the previous book. The unbelievable becomes believable. This author turned a tragedy into a mind-blowing opportunity, of renewal, of a magic so hidden, that when it surfaced, it shattered reality. The vividry in the majestic world building, transported me to LIVE the story, not only read the story. This is one seamless tale, set over 2 books, giving more depth to the storytelling, the characters, and the compulsion to learn more of Ellovan's and Jesstin's fate, is firmly set from book 1. If I had any doubts to this author's talent, which I didn't, she just reinforced everything I knew her to be. She has a knack for exposing a darkness that resides in all of us, she paints an intricate portrait of complexities that seem effortless in their telling but so convoluted and mired in shadows, it's only when she deems fit to peel away the shadows, do we see her brilliance. This second part of this riveting tale, was writhingly stark, vivid, desperate. The yearning was real, the emotions hard-hitting and the darkness compelling. Traversing the underworld, uniquely, sets a new standard for magnificent storytelling, with Necromancy, magic, survival, uneasy alliances, fierce loyalties and love, give this book the edge. An unputdownable edge!
Haggling, scheming, plotting, decieving , all go hand in hand in this edition. Distraught and desperate, the only one who can bring Ellovan back, is Jesstin. It sounds so simple, venture into literally uncharged territory, find her, bring her home. Golly do I love the complexity of his character! He's so contrary to what he outwardly portrays and he doesn't always think things through, he's rash, he's determined and nothing can sway him once he sets his mind on something. He's hidden himself, his pain, so deeply, a can opener wouldn't be able to pry him open. Lexsea has the right of it, “You’re punishing yourself for the behavior of other men. Men who are not you, are nothing like you.” The revulsion Jess feels for himself at what he did, at what his family did, is a noose around his soul. He cannot forget and he certainly cannot forgive himself. Only Sesto, amazing, loyal Sesto can see what Jess is doing to himself and why.
"I built an entire life out of being seen as a villain because it was the only way I could keep them from seeing me.” can one be more vulnerable??? And when he bared his soul to Ellovan, geez! Jesstin really did a number on my heart! Yes he's impetuous, yes he's impulsive, yes he "does" before he thinks but his heart, his soul, is in the right place. On his journey to save Ellovan, Jess is forced to face his biggest fears and learns so much in the process. And oh dear lordie, WHAT he encounters made me want to howl in agony for him. Even knowing how Ms Cradit releases and tugs on the stings of her tale, I was gobsmacked! Jess, needless to say, was beyond devastated...the pain of the truth hitting you smack bang, is always devastating. And when Ms Cradit turned up the volume, the drama, the tension, the danger, I thought I was going to combust! Hells, WHERE she took this story, WHAT she conjured, I was clenching my teeth in angst. For Jess, for Ellie, I was literally screaming NO! Sarah not only conjured the beautiful but tortured souls I fell in love with, she also conjured the fantastical, despicable Conductor, Fabrien, amongst others. But heck, the Conductor made my brain freeze at the depth of her...it's .. depraved nature! Nothing in this book was as I expected, Sarah kept me on the edge of my seat throughout, I was completely spellbound, I was completely immersed and I was completely devastated at what Ellovan and Jesstin endured.
“I see you and nothing else, not even the sun, because my love for you is blinding.” these very word Jesstin proves over and over again. The lengths he goes through for Ellovan, will go through for her, even to his own detriment, melted what remained of my heart. Which Ms Cradit pulled every which way. Which Ms Cradit soundly stomped over. Which Ms Cradit gently healed...She twisted so many knots, she turned so many characters, she surprised me so many times. And that is the power she has, just as I thought I could expel the breath I was holding, I realised how wishful my thinking was, Sarah hit me once again, even harder, right in the heart. I sobbed. For Taven, for Jesstin, for Ellovan, for Gennady, for friendship list, for the truth that has the ability to cut sharper than any blade. When Jess said these words to Ellie, it decimated me “I love you a thousand times more than I’ve ever hated myself.” because he did. Both love Ellovan and loathe himself with an intensity that sears.
But, through all my writhing in absolute agony, by the end of this book, I, as well as Ellovan and Jesstin, finally got to banish the darkness that clung like leeches, no more sucking, no more pain, only the beauty of light, of love, of putting the past behind and embracing the light. This story, told over 2 books, is dark, really dark. The sliver of light so easily extinguished by the author, only to have it shine a little brighter each time it appears. This is a story of immense torturous events, of despair and helplessness but it's also one of courage,of strength, of redemption, of conquering demons, and of forgiveness. Immaculately presented, magnificently delivered, and even though the trauma was real for me too, this is my favourite Sarah M Cradit read.

Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book. What an incredible story! It’s the conclusion of Jesstin and Elloven’s love story. After she was killed at the end of book one, Jesstin decides to follow her into the afterlife, using his necromancer abilities to bring her back to life. We don’t know whether he’ll succeed, partly because no living person has ever travelled to the afterlife and survived, and he faces so many challenges, it really becomes iffy.
Cradit’s greatest skill—and she has many—is her ability to world build and make it tangible to the reader. There were difficult descriptions that I could see so clearly because she has the vocabulary and the skill to portray people, places, and events so adroitly.
Another one of her skills is her ability to make her reader feel the emotions of her characters. This book switches between the POVs of Jesstin and Elloven. Not only do we know their thoughts and motivations, but we also know their feelings. And because their feelings are so eloquently expressed, we feel them too.
There are so many quotes that are noteworthy. Some are pithy; some made me laugh. All remind me of why I love Sarah Cradit’s books so much.
Sesto tells Tavin, “I’ve observed many men like you over the years. You cannot fathom what love looks like without holding the reins and guiding the other wherever you need them.”
Jesstin says, “You’ll need to explain this as though I’m as stupid as you thought I was in the forest.”
In the afterlife, Jesstin encounters his mother, whom his father killed when he was a toddler. Regarding his father, she says, “Only a weak man could be the catalyst for so much destruction and still see himself as the victim of it.”
I loved this political statement from Jesstin while talking to Elloven: “Our societal structure hinges on us believing there is one uniform way to think, act, believe, worship… Those who don’t are forced to the fringes of society, because if others followed them, the cages they built for us would crumble.” It’s a not-so-subtle reference to our current leaders.
And this one description is so vivid, I found myself recoiling when I first read it. Jesstin is at a bar in the afterlife with Elloven. “The last time he’d consumed drinks so sweet, he’d woken the next day with bile fastening his face to the courtyard stones.” Ewwww.
I highly recommend this series. The journey that Jesstin and Elloven take through the afterlife is truly original and very engrossing. And you’d think, after a journey like that, they’d live happily ever after, but Jesstin is still hiding the fact that he killed Elloven’s brother, Gennady. He knows that once he confesses, his love won’t be enough to save what they have. The question is, does Elloven have within her the capacity to forgive that Jesstin found within himself while facing his trials in the afterlife?

Cradit does it again - it is mind blowing to me how she manages to expose the darkness within us through her characters.The second installment of The Virtue and the Vixen is melancholic but laced with hope. These two characters have ridiculous odds to overcome, and I'm not just talking about the fact they're currently in the underworld after a harrowing end to part 1. Both Jesstin and Elloven have dark pasts and are haunted by it. Between the challenges they need to face based on where they are and their inner demons, Elloven and Jesstin have a lot to on their plates and yet... Yet, they find themselves, each other and a way out. And I, well... I am filled with so many feelings, and a decent portion of them are fuzzy. The underworld is such an intriguing place and full of nightmares, I actually loved the addition of it to the world building! But the consequences of being in the underworld... Oh that destroyed me (iykyk). I expected it because of foreshadowing but I was not ready for the extent. I was absolutely devastated for these characters. Prepare for this story to rip you apart and for Cradit to put you back together beautifully and masterfully, like she does with her characters and their stories.
I'm quite excited to revisit the Kingdom of the White Sea series once the Book of All Things wraps up. Knowing all these back stories will surely add to reading about their descendants!!! I love it when authors create such vast worlds - it is a huge testimony to their dedication to their craft and their mastery of storytelling!

The Virtue and the Vixen Volume 2 is the twelfth book in The Book of All Things series - a series of stand-alones set in the same world, The Kingdom of the White Sea by Sarah M. Cradit. TVatV2 is the fourth book in the Guardians Cycle - the first three being The Altruist and the Assassin, The Belle and the Blackbird, and The Virtue and the Vixen Volume 1 (can still be read as a standalone).
Volume 2 picks up where volume 1 left off, and I'm at a loss for words. What a journey volume 2 takes us on! I didn't tear through this one as quickly as I did volume 1. I savored it more, but it still kept me on the edge of my seat. I absolutely loved Jesstin and Elloven’s story. I love the two of them together. The emotions were felt, and I may have gotten a little teary-eyed. Such a good, well written story. The author, Sarah M. Cradit did a great job. My heart is content with the way things wrapped up.
It's a dark story, so if you're someone who likes to know the trigger warnings beforehand, I recommend checking them out (I'll list them down below).
If this book sounds like something you'd enjoy, I'd recommend giving it and the rest of the series a read sometime!

The conclusion to the Virtue & the Vixen!
Volume 2 follows Jesstin in his journey to save Elloven. It actually starts right where Volume 1 ends. Jesstin is very much a tortured lead who will burn the world to save her - it’s interesting to see the depths he’d go. And the necromancy elements were neat. I also love Elloven’s character growth! And how her relationship with Jesstin emerges in this volume! (Also if you’re a fan of the follow her to hell trope / Orpheus x Eurydice vibes, vol 2 definitely dives more into that)
This book is melancholic but the themes have some hope interwoven. I also adored the redemption / forgiving yourself message in this two part volume! There’s also a lot of themes around Jesstin’s necromancy and Elloven’s chaos magic that were neat to explore / read in this volume 👀
All in all, I really enjoyed this duo of novels!

THIS BOOK WAS BANANAS oh my gosh!! We went to such crazy places in this one, and I looooved the complications within the relationship that we saw. Them trying to reconcile all of the things they know with the feelings they feel, this one hit deep. Plus THAT TIME JUMP WHAT THE HECK. I was expecting something like that but not to that extent! It felt heart-breaking reading about the characters I knew but having them be old!

I just loved the ending to this trilogy and the introductions to the future worlds, plus also the introductions to the original trilogy (being Jesstin's descendents!) Definitely excited to dive into the original trilogy hopefully this year. Thank you so much Sarah for allowing me to read this one 💖

Part 1 of this story was already heart wrenching but the second part was even more so. Starting seconds after the final events of part 1, this book didn't give me a chance to catch my breath.
Following Jesstin and Elloven into another world, them finding each other across world and all the turmoil they go through in the Infinitum was amazing. Fast paced, heart breaking, so much happening at once.
This book made me cry tears of sadness and tears of joy with its plentiful bittersweet moments.
The healing and growing of both main characters was great to witness and I was very much afraid Sarah wouldn't give us the ending she did.
Following Jesstin and Elloven into another world, them finding each other across world and all the turmoil they go through in the Infinitum was amazing. Fast paced, heart breaking, so much happening at once.
This book made me cry tears of sadness and tears of joy with its plentiful bittersweet moments.
The healing and growing of both main characters was great to witness and I was very much afraid Sarah wouldn't give us the ending she did.

We come into book 2 with Jesstin stepping into the netherworld to find Elloven after her death. To rescue her. To save her.
What happens after was never expected but should have been a given. Test after test they were put through to try and find the end to the beginning and ultimately in the end, they had them gone for years. Many many years. There is no truer necromancer than Jesstin. The only one who could truly save those in the Infinitum to reverse the damage long ago created to allow those who have passed to move on.
In the end we see two souls, Jesstin and Elloven were brought back to one another due to unforseen circumstances. But their love they shared was too strong for either of them to truly live without the other.

This second addition and conclusion to the saga brought all the emotions to the table. The main characters face one challenge after another, but overall have tremendous character growth. This book portrays necromancy at its height with all the deep-seated struggles, yet an underlying desire to survive against all odds. And above all, a love story that will withstand the fiercest trials.

This was the most satisfying ending to Jesstin and Elloven’s story. This is a continuation from the events at the end of vol. 1 and follows Jesstin’s journey through Infinita Mori to save Elloven and the events after. The world building of Infinita Mori was amazing and it was delivered so well. The amount of growth that Jesstin and Elloven continued to have was incredible and felt it strengthened them individually and within their relationship with each other.
This was a wonderful read and I highly recommend reading this. I also recommend to read the Guardian Cycle as a whole for a more immersive experience.
