The Song of Hope

Rate this book
Every revolution begins with hope.

Aria Byrne thought leaping from the Arakkan cliffs into the freezing sea below would be the greatest risk of her life. She was wrong. When she is rescued by a band of eccentric rebels and thrust into a world of secrecy and surging unrest, Aria discovers that survival is only the beginning. The princess she is falling for doesn’t remember her. Her allies are scattered. The shadows are closing in. Determined to find a way to save Roz from whatever grisly fate Prince Idris has in store for her, Aria must decide how much of herself she is willing to sacrifice to protect the ones she loves, which might require embracing the very darkness she once raged against.

Princess Rosalind Westfall has awoken to a world in chaos. After her devastating loss in the Duel of Wolves, she is at the mercy of her brother, the ruthless Wolf of Black Waters. Prince Idris has stripped her of her titles and ordered her to continue her betrothal to King Maxim of Vidalia. Powerless, yet unwilling to turn away from the atrocities paving a trail of blood to her brother’s throne, Roz realizes that she must do everything she can to stop him. Even at the risk of betraying her family and defying the system that created everything she knows. All the while, behind the curtains of her mind, a mysterious woman in black dances in her dreams.

Together, Aria and Roz will ignite a one that will either forge a new destiny in the embers of Ascela’s future or reduce everything they care about to ashes.

A wonderful conclusion to The Castes of Ascela duology.

With a cast of likeable characters and a powerful villain that was truly detestable.

There's plenty of magic, action, violence and killings with a content warning of children being killed and people being tortured and coerced. Which is probably relevant to emphasize the cruelty and depravity of the villains.

As with all things it wasn't perfect with some minor dissatisfaction with the plot like how some parts were simplified, didn't make sense or were rather unrealistic. But it did not diminish the overall enjoyment of story itself.

Of the two MCs, I liked Roz more. She is sensible and down-to-earth as compared to Aria who is overconfident but panics easily and is a little arrogant and entitled. But of all the characters, I loved Skye and Nina best. Their plight pulls at the heartstrings and both are kindhearted and endearing.

There were possibly a lot of other shortcomings but in short I just enjoyed the overall vibe of the story. It is a good book with a good story.

Book two of the sapphic YA romantasy you need in your life (and it’s indie/self-published which is so cool)! This time, the FMCs are in their underground rebellion era and it is so fun and badass! If you like Samantha Shannon’s writing, you will totally love this too. I loved how this book had you really jump right into where the last book left off (pun intended). There is so much character development across the cast, and it brought me so much joy to see all the characters grow. Having a few chapters from the cat’s perspective were hilarious while also giving a sneak peek into what was going on outside of the other storytellers’ points of view. I loved getting into more lore of the gods in this world. The plot twists had my jaw on the floor, the wholesome moments made my heart explode, and every other emotion I felt in this book was just *chef’s kiss*. The themes of love and hope and sisterhood hit me so hard. And the last 50 pages or so were such a roller coaster, I was on the edge of my seat!!! Safe to say I will be reading anything Ellie Tru publishes!
