“Tell me what you want, starlight.” “You, Cal. I just want you.”
Solis Falling is the first instalment in the adult romantasy series, Aurelian Guild. Each novel appears to be standalone but will continue to explore the world. Written in dual first person POV the story follows Callum and Raelyna as the city of Solis is on the brink of change and they find themselves at the center of it all. This story draws inspiration from the Biblical story of Jericho but you do not need to have any knowledge to follow along.
Raelyna's only goal in life is to protect her sisters after the death of her father. She, in a desperate attempt to protect them from being forced into the temples of Solis Quarter for servitude, signs away her life in a deal with the king, her once friend. Yet as her youngest sister draws closer to the coming of age ceremony that gifts all beings their wings and their elemental affinity she finds herself drawn to someone she knows she cannot get involved with - Callum Blackwood - a member of the Solis guard...except Callum is actually an powerful undercover agent for the the Aurelian Guild who is meant to investigate the darkness infecting Solis. It becomes clear that these two must work together to unravel the secrets...but will they find themselves falling to their ruin or will they rise amongst the ashes?
Raelyna is a character that is inquisitive and resilient. She is incredibly loyal to her family and you can see the pressure it has on her. I liked seeing her push to uncover the truth and also still see their playfulness in her. Her relationship with Luc was so ick (intentionally) and I wish I understood more about it prior to the deal.
Callum is a male determined to fulfil his duty. I liked how much meeting Raelyna shakes up his world and really forces him to forge a different path. The banter between him and Raelyna was amazing and I really liked how much he stuck to his guns. He does keep things to himself but I understood, given his background, why.
In terms of spice I would give this book about 0.5 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There is one scene in this novel and it fades to black with additional kissing scenes (I would say 2?). All of this takes place in the late second half of the novel. I found the romance to be really well developed, filled with banter, and interactions they build trust and connection. I could see why they turned to each other even if one didn't understand why. Callum's struggle knowing what Raelyna was to him but not wanting to force this on her until she could understand tugged on my heartstring. I loved seeing how their romance unfolded.
The story itself was such a smooth journey once the ball started rolling! I felt like I needed a bit more context around the Aurelian Guild and why they're getting involved in Solis but the mystery around the gods and darkness in Solis was striking and quickly grabs your focus to guide you along. Raelyna's deal with Luc didn't feel as high stakes as it was meant to be but, man, he was made to be unlikeable. Side characters like Axel and Finn helped shake up our characters. Also Loxl was adorable! The dynamic between Raelyna and Callum was an absolute delight and I loved every moment that came together but equally loved their different journeys. It built up to a pretty good conflict with action and I liked how they upped the tension with a twist after everything hits the fan. The ending is an HEA that felt so good and I want to keep going.
Overall, I really found myself sucked into this story! I cannot wait to see where this world takes us!
Thank you, T.A. Reilly for the eARC in return for an honest review.
What to expect - 🪽 angels & spies 🖤 corrupt religious system ✨ reluctant allies to lovers 🪽 MCs centuries old 🖤 slow burn tension ✨ fated mates (denied at every turn) 🪽 sassy banter under pressure 🖤 “who did this to you?” energy ✨ secrets & betrayals 🪽 found family in rebellion
Raelyna, our FMC, is bound to an evil King in the Solis quarter due to deal she made with him to protect her sister. She is a lower due to her poor affinity that was given to her on her Marking Day.
Blackwood, the MMC, is an Aurelian Guild spy, sent in to infiltrate the quarter, determine how deep the corruption is and report back to the Guild. He crosses paths with Raelyna, which puts her more in trouble with the king.
I loved this dystopian fantasy, it was full of action, rebellion, high-stakes danger, political corruption and forbidden longing. The world building is descriptive and simple to follow. I wish this wasn't a standalone, it would have been amazing to have more of this world to come.
Watching the relationship build between Raelyna and Blackwood was gorgeous. Raelyna, is fierce and so loyal. She loves everyone with all her being and has a heart of gold. She will go out of her way to do everything she can for those she loves. Blackwood, he is strong, steady and so protective of those who he holds close.
"I mean it. Never let anyone hide you in the darkness; you deserve to be put in the light"
"Careful with that mouth, starlight. We are trying not to get caught after all."
"Why did you start calling me starlight" - "Because even in the darkest moments, starlight always shines. And I wanted to remind you to shine even when it feels like the world is caving in, surrounding you in darkness."
"I will always find you, starlight, even in the darkness. But it won't last forever. Light is coming."
"I mean it, Raelyna. It's been you . . . since the moment I laid eyes on you."
"Neither did you, starlight," I stated. "But even so, I would choose this . . . I would choose you . . . in this life . . . in the next . . . every single time. I would choose you. You have been on my mind every single moment since I first saw you at the Tilted Tavern. Even then, before we marked, I wanted to spend time in your presence. So don't tell that I didn't get to choose this . . . because I do choose this."
This is my first T.A. Reilly book and she’s officially convinced me to read the rest of her work.
This book follows a world that has been divided into four quarters due to the corruption that has spread throughout Aurelia. We follow the story of Rae, an angel bound to the evil king whose forced to dance in order to survive and spy Blackwood whose mission is to infiltrate the Solis quarter and report back to the Aurelian Guild.
The story is based on the biblical story “The Fall of Jericho”. Religion is a heavy topic of the book and well as corruption and politics. I decided to read the book of Joshua in order to recall the story and accurately describe how much of it actually goes into this book. In conclusion, it follows the same story but make is hot Angel spies and a sassy Angel FMC.
The writing is very easy to follow and the story and world building is very descriptive so it allows you to easily visualize the story. The romance is closed-door spice, but it’s done very well and I would still categorize this book as early adult/ adult.
If you’re interested in a religion-based fantasy with politics, angels, spies, fated mates, elemental magic, some found fam, and low spice.. add this to your TBR bestie.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read your work in advance! ✨💖
Shout out to T.A. Riley for allowing me to ARC read Solis Falling!
This story was so different and I truly enjoyed it! It was an urban fantasy retelling of the Fall of Jericho. Our FMC Rae lives in behind the wall in a very corrupt Solis Quarter (the world was divided into Quarters when The Rift was formed). Rae is considered a lesser because she only has one affinity (magical ability) and she lives in The Wall. The King was a childhood friend of hers but he is so mean and evil towards her (I couldn’t really figure out why he hated her so much though). Our MMC Callum is a spy who comes to scout out Solis Quarter to see how deep the corruption runs there and to investigate the king and what is causing the corruption and what has caused the people there to turn against the Eternal.
The plot of this story was unique. I like the magic system, I liked the religious aspects that ran throughout the story as well. I loved the found family and all of the side characters. I enjoyed the romance in the story and I enjoyed the fact that there were no spicy scenes (1 fade to black moment). It was a true slow burn and the enjoyed that immensely as well. It was action packed and full of high stress moments. If you’re looking for something a bit different I would say give this story a try when it releases. 4.5 ⭐️ for me!
“It’s like this unexplainable force that pulls me into her orbit anytime she’s near.”
I knew the minute a certain spy with dimples and irresistible gold eyes entered the chat that the interactions between Cal & Raelyna would be worthwhile. If anything, the banter was so much fun, you just knew they were inevitable.
This book had a strong plot of underlying corruption, withheld knowledge for the main purpose of control, and finding the truth. Lucanus is… villainous. The way he devolved into something so unrecognizable from the childhood boy Rae knew, to someone so greedy for power and elevation was definitely the start of his downfall. He played the villain part well, I definitely disliked him from start to finish lol.
My favorite part of the whole book outside of the interactions between Rae & Cal, were the found family moments with their respective trios. There is such a tight knit bond there, and so much love given. The unquestionable loyalty is admirable, and I loved Finn & Axel!! ( The most endearing shoutout to the sweet mythical, and extremely rare ethereal fox Loxl. He put the biggest smile on my face everytime he popped up! )
There was action, high stakes, and a wild last 10% of the book that definitely had me stressed out lol.
🌶 1 of 5- passionate kissing, one fade to black intimate scene that was steamy but no body parts named.
❤️🔥 the slowest burn with killer tension.
⚠️ strong language throughout, corrupted religious system, violence.
This was a delicious dystopian romantic fantasy. I could not put it down. This loose retelling of the Walls of Jericho was incredible! I had no idea how the author was going to make this work but she killed it!
The magic system was well developed and the world building was thorough. The urban setting was really unique and the author made it fit so well.
I often find that low/no spice authors make the kissing scenes really awkward but that was NOT the case with Solis Falling. The fade to black scene was steamy, so well done and honestly beautiful. I loved the MCs and their love story. All of the characters were so endearing except of course for the villian. You will really hate the villian.
Thank you to the author for the ARC! These opinions are my own. I was not compensated in any way.
This story is based on the book of Joshua and the fall of Jericho. There were so many parallels and I loved the creative lead way the author took with this story!
I also loved that this book was not super spicy! It was a breath of fresh air… don’t get me wrong, I love a good spicy Romantasy!!! But I love a good fade to black slow burn!!! There is 1 spice scene in this book and it’s fade to black! There are plenty of longing looks and steamy kisses and flirty banter so my feet were kicking so hard in this one!!!
If you are looking for a good power imbalance dystopian urban fantasy that will have you locked in, speed turning pages, and staying up at night to read just one more chapter then seriously look no further! T.A. Reilly gives us a power happy dictator to loathe, a super hot mysterious MMC, a fly by the seat of her pants sassy no filter having baddie FMC, and a full cast of side characters that I loved!!!
This one is a good one y’all! Be sure to add it to your list!!!
I flew through this book because I was so captivated by Raelyna and Blackwood! Ohhh I loved this book so much and the essence of finding your light. Solis was my “just one more chapter and all of the sudden it’s 3 a.m.” book!
Solis Falling is an urban fantasy retelling of the Fall of Jericho set in a world where your gifted affinity dictates your living status and how you’re treated in society. After strange encounters and questionable decisions, Rae, the fmc, starts to investigate the king, political system and power. She reluctantly agrees to work with an off-limits, mysterious guard named Blackwood, the mmc, to unearth the truth and bring light back to the darkness.
T.A.’s writing takes you on a journey where it’s easy to get lost in the world building, beautiful interactions between found family and slow burn and build of emotional intimacy. My favorite message is to not forget to let your light shine even in the darkest of places or phases.
Thank you so much to T.A. Reilly for a gifted ARC! My thoughts are my own.
This book had me pacing my living room like I was responsible for the fate of Aurelia. I went in expecting a nice little fantasy escape and instead got political corruption, religious chaos, forbidden longing, and a king who needs therapy more than he needs a crown.
Raelyna is just trying to keep her family alive, and the universe keeps responding with ‘lol absolutely not.’ Every time she tries to mind her business, someone (Luc, Callum, the entire city) says ‘actually, hey here’s more trauma.’
BUT the world is beautifully built, the danger feels real, and the characters are so vivid you’ll want to shake them and hug them in the same breath. Rae’s fight for her family hooked me, the unraveling secrets kept me, and Callum Blackwood… well, he ensured I wasn’t putting this book down. 👀
If you enjoy yelling ‘GIRL DON’T DO IT’ at fictional characters and then watching them do it anyway, this is your next read.
This book was the urban fantasy I NEEDED!!! The banter, the he falls first, the sprinkle of spice?! Ugh it was perfection. And the angels and spies trope was too good. (Side note… the author’s description of the wings is just so beautiful.)
First let’s talk about Rae... she is 100% a baddieee with a heart of gold. Cares about her friends and family so much but also stands on business with a certain spy who can’t stay away from her 🤭 🤭 🤭
And CAL?! Let me just say… swoon. I love a man who can take charge but in a respectful way 😏 (Also the friends were cracking me up.)
The plot left me saying “just one more chapter” a few too many times as well. The intrigue and high-stakes spying scenes kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting for all the secrets to come to light. The author did a great job with the pacing and keeping me interested! I can’t wait for the next standalone in this series!
I had a great time reading this book. Interesting world and magic system. Lots of juicy secrets and twists and turns in this story. The ending was wrapped up nicely and wasn’t a total cliffhanger. FMC/MMC are loveable and a couple you’d want to root for. I’ll admit my favorite character was Loxl the Foxl and I am REALLY hoping he plays a bigger part of the story in later books. Pretty please?! He wins the most adorable animal side-kick!
I originally gave this 4 stars, I think the writing could be a little more refined. A few times I didn’t quite understand certain parts, or the why/how. Maybe some of the ideas should have been expanded on a little better to help the reader understand. HOWEVER, the included character art bumped this back up to 5 stars. I admit I haven’t read every book in the world, but I’ve read a few (lol!) and very few times have I gotten art included, unless it’s a special edition. A huge thank you to the author for this extra special touch :)
I read this book so fast! I picked it up in a state of indecision and found myself not putting it down even once. Well, except to sleep.
The world is so incredibly unique. It feels like a mix of dystopian, urban fantasy, and yet so much more. I really liked getting in to the world and learning a bit about the dynamics.
I really wish there was more to this book - meaning longer, a second book, anything. I know there’s going to be more standalones, but I wish we had more time with these two as our main characters. I really loved getting to know them over the course of the book.
This feels like if City of Gods and Monsters and The Book of Azrael had a baby. It takes the best of everything from these and makes one incredible and unique book.
Thank you so much to TA Reilly for an arc of this book. All opinions are my own.
Advanced copy provided by the author for an honest review.
Solis Falling is a retelling of the Wall of Jericho in the biblical book of Joshua. The author did a wonderful job building this world and describing Solis Quarter as if I were flying over it and seeing for myself. The beautiful artwork throughout was a pleasant surprise.
The FMC was trying to do all she could to take care of her family never hesitating to sacrifice her own happiness and safety as long as they were happy and safe. The MMC let her drive his motorcycle. The banter between them was so good!
This is the first book I’ve read about angels and I need more of that! I also look forward to reading more from @tareillybooks. And the book cover is gorgeous!
🖤Corrupt Religious System 🪽Fated Mates 🖤Sassy Banter 🪽Angels x Spies 🖤Found Family 🪽Reluctant Allies to Lovers 🖤Dual POV 🪽Urban Fantasy x Dystopian Blend
Thank you to the author for the advance readers copy
Dystopian and urban fantasy?! Yes please!!! I couldn’t put this book down. T.A. Reilly hooked me in at angels with golden wings and elemental powers in a retelling of the Wall of Jericho. This book follows Raelyna an angel trapped in Solis and bounded to the ruthless king that used to be her friend. As she begins to question things, she bumps into Callum, the angel spy. Together they help her reveal her true magic and end corruption. I enjoyed the world but wish there would have been more world building. The slow burn love between these two makes you want more! Really enjoyed that there was behind the door spice and I would feel comfortable with an older teenager reading the book.
I'm an absolute sucker for a retelling, and this one was phenomenal. You don't need to know the story of Jericho to enjoy it, but if you do, you'll catch so many clever parallels that make the experience even more rewarding. Between the Starbound Bond, the conspiracy unraveling at the heart of Solis, Raelyna's selfless courage, and Callum's unwavering devotion and support, this story delivers a beautiful blend of romance, sacrifice, and hope. It's a quick, compelling read that I wholeheartedly recommend.
A solid story and I was hooked since the beginning! I'm not a huge fan of urban and dystopian stories but I like that those aspects weren't the main focus of the story.
This story was well paced and I enjoyed it. 4 stars cause I had to do a double take with a few potential plot holes but overall I highly recommend this story!
I love Raelynn and her strength to protect her sister through a bargain with a previous childhood friend. Callum and Pierce are funny characters and the banter is so good! One of the scenes while they were exploring was hilarious 😂. The pacing is developed well. The motorcycle scene was too exhilarating!
I loved Raeylna as a female main characters, she was sassy and strong but not an innate fighter and she is extremely protective about those she cares about. I also love the found family elements and all of the side characters within the story. I really enjoyed the dystopian and urban fantasy elements of the book, and loved whenever we got snippets of the history or the lore.
Angels and Spies? Pretty Wings? Yes please! I loved this story so much. I found the characters to be really well written and I loved the descriptions of the world and the wings were described so beautifully! This is perfect if you loved Crescent City and Divergent, and I can’t wait for the next books in this series!
T.A. Reilly is probably so sick of me in her dms talking to her about this book. But when I say this is one of the best books I have ever read, I MEAN IT. I think about this book everyday, am telling EVERYONE i know they need to pre-order it (i don’t apologize to my friends who have already). Anyways, i’m obsessed with this book and no one can force me to shut up about it.
