The second book in a darkly romantic duology that explores disability, obsession, and the twisted limits of loyalty. From the New York Times bestselling author of Your Blood, My Bones!
Shea Parker made a bargain with the Gravewood devil, the leader of the vampire crew that rules the haunted forest surrounding Shea's desolate town. In exchange for what she most needs -- batteries for her hearing aids -- she'll give Lysander what he most craves... Shea's blood.
Shea braced for danger. She prepared for manipulation.
She never expected to fall in love.
But after betraying Lysander to save the life of her oldest friend, Shea starts to wonder which of them is the real the ruthless boy with the frozen heart... or the only girl who's ever broken it.
The gravewood was one of my favorite books I read last year so I was very anxious going into the hollow king, but it was a satisfying ending to the story. The writing is as good as ever, it's dark and almost haunting, I love it. The story took a turn I wasn't expecting but I'm not mad about it, it does make sense with the rest of it but I just didn't think it would go in that direction. I love Shea, Lys and Asher so much and I'm happy with the ending they got, even though I wanted a little more... I have a feeling this duology will stick with me, and that's the biggest compliment I could give it.
This duology is everything I loved as a teen, reading my YA books on my bed in my childhood bedroom. It's still everything I love as an adult reading my adult novels on my couch.
Not everything is for everyone, but I will scream this duology's praises from the mountaintops until I completely lose my voice.
It's proof you can have a love triangle that isn't pages of "pick me". It's proof that you don't need spice in a book to prove your characters are obsessed with each other. It's proof of other things, but I do want to keep this as spoiler free as possible.
It's Shea's courage in losing everything in hopes of getting everything back. It's Asher's determination to protect the things he cares about. It's in Lys's eternal struggle to hold on to his humanity, even if he doesn't realize he's still doing it.
We also finally meet characters and visit places that we catch glimpses of throughout the story like Professor Holt and the college, we meet Max Hansen again and learn more about where he fits into everything. We also have Susan and Bryony join the cast of characters.
We also get to see the other side of The Gravewood in a world untouched by Rot and learn more about what was happening on the east coast when the Rot began. How everything we've learned about is connection with an ending that left me in tears.. and I don't cry easily.
Please Please Please read these books if you like dystopian worlds, vampires, zombie-like creatures, mysterious diseases, eco-horror (to a degree), love triangles that don't make you want to pull your hair out, strong supporting characters, a well conducted plot, deaf protagonist representation, and just so much more.
I’m going to talk so much smack about this book once my labs are over just you wait just you wait (also yes I will shoot myself. The shooting will happen after I write this review dw)
Pre-read: The date of my suicide (or yk the confirmation that I won't buy a gun and shoot myself, if we're going to be hopeful) is going to be expedited to this Thursday. Or Saturday. It sure as hell won't be today because god hates me and my professors hate me more.
This was such a satisfying end to one of my most anticipated duologies. I never could have guessed the resolution and that always is a present surprise. A huge huge huge thank you to Scholastic Press, Kelly Andrew, and NetGalley for this ARC 💜
If Klaus Mikaelson and Void Stiles were brothers and had another brother who's a bit melancholy, he would be named Oliver Lysander Keeling. He has the dangerous charm and darkness with possibly more yearning for Shea than Klaus for Caroline. And I could totally see him serenading her with a cover of Spike's 'Rest in Peace' from the musical episode of Buffy.
I have trust issues with Kelly Andrew after YBMB (still crying in the dark at 4am to that one), but that will never stop me from rabidly devouring everything she writes. Even if she takes a wooden stake to my heart a few times before patching it up with high quality vampire glitter glue.
The Hollow King is the perfect conclusion to this duology. The setting shifts partly out of the whispering, hungry forest to show us what's going on beyond the Gravewood. There were reveals and events that made it impossible to put the book down. These characters go THROUGH. IT. Before they reach the end.
I don't know how it happened, but I actually really like Asher. I thought he was doomed to be hated by me after the first book. I'd shockingly put him in fourth place, after Kit, Lys, and Shea. Yes, the possum is in first place.
If you're like me, you're scouring the reviews for the love triangle outcome. I'm not going to ruin it. Suffer as I did, because it was so worth it.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the e-arc. My opinions in this review are my own, and so is my Kelly Andrew book addiction. I cannot wait for more from the Queen of Spooky Romance and Tortured Yearners.
Same with book one, I loved to see a deaf main character and how that perspective was represented.
As a sequel, this book goes big. The scale of the plot hits a new level in book two... we started in their small, isolated town and the gravewood. Now we've zoomed out to such a massive level, including a global conspiracy fueled by big pharma and the societal elites. You could argue it reaches too far at times, but I actually think it all worked really nicely, once all the pieces fell into place.
The tension of the love triangle throughout was definitely there. I didn't know who I was rooting for half the time, and honestly thought this was going to become a throuple sitch many times. That would have been a super interesting take! That said, it does follow a pretty standard formula of guy A: dark, brooding villian type, who turns out to just be a traumatized lover boy in a trenchcoat, vs guy B: white knight, childhood sweetheart with a heart of gold. My other frustration with this was this incredible tension build up throughout, even though we low key know which guy it's going to be, kind of sputters out in the end. Guy B gets pushed to the wayside almost, in a way that felt unresolved for me.
The ending is quite lovely though. We get beautiful moments all around to end a long, bloody battle.

I was really looking forward to this sequel and how the duology was going to come to an end but unfortunately it didn’t meet expectations. I had so much fun reading the first book and was ready to see the core characters again but it fell flat.
While I found the expansion of the world interesting, there was a great lack of the core characters interacting. There were a lot of new characters introduced, which I would have not previously mined only but because of it we didn’t get the core characters interacting which is what was so fun from the first books.
This last book did tie up all loose ends and was a quick read, this series might have done better as a trilogy since A LOT was packed into this book.
Thank you to Scholastic Press for providing me with an eARC. This review is honest and voluntary.
A medium pace and repetitive conclusion to this duology, taking you exactly where you would expect. Nothing ground breaking or interesting, just lots of the same love triangle as the first book. I wouldn't even really say this is a love triangle, at times it feels more like a thrupple, but the author wasn't bold enough to take it there. Or she did and then scaled it back leaving us with this weird mismatched version.
I'm not sure what about this didn't click for me but I struggled to get through. If you liked the first book, you will probably like this. If you didn't care for The Gravewood or were on the fence like me, I say skip.
2.5 stars, rounded up Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC
Incredible work. Kelly Andrew is an auto-buy author for me and I am so, so happy with this conclusion. No spoilers but THANK YOU to NetGalley for the opportunity to get my hands on this one so early!!!!
