Juliette is a paragon of knowledge in the herb world. Her life experiences honed and refined her world view on the care of animals and, as I knew I would, I loved this book and will use it as a reference time and time again.

first book I ever read/re-read/re-read so many times it began falling apart...introduced me to the concept of Natural Rearing of animals, which I still follow in a modified fashion after 15 years...

Wendy Volhard's work in canine nutrition is largely based upon the work of JBL, and the Herbal Handbook is an absolutely fascinating read. It chronicles JBL's study and educational journey with generations of her own sighthounds, as she developed her "Natural Rearing" techniques for dogs. She goes above and beyond what most of us would be willing to do (I'm a huge proponent of raw diet for dogs, but I have yet to dig a pit and bury a side of beef or venison for the dogs' later consumption), but learning the foundations of so much work that has come after it in this field is both informative and fascinating.

When I read this book for the first time back in the '80's I realised that what Juliette was sharing is simple common sense! Whilst I haven't adopted all of Juliette's methods, the simple approach to feeding my animals wisely and the way nature intended has provided consistently healthy and vital results for over 30 years. Highly recommended as a timelessly valuable resource.
The review calls for the date I finished the book but the truth is I doubt I'll stop reading .....

Ik ben van de overtuiging dat de hollistische weg altijd het beste is voor mens en dier, en ik vond het een erg informatief en toegankelijk boek voor als je hier meer over wil leren.

A really interesting collection of older remedies and methods compiled from the author's visits to various countries. Modern day vets/animal stewards might cringe at some of the suggestions, but no ill-effects were noted. Medicine, after all, is very much rooted in what Mother Nature provides.

I rarely read herbals, and even more rarely read books about dog rearing, and so was surprised and delighted by how engaging and useful this book turned out to be. An eloquent and bold wordsmith, Juliette De Bairacli Levy doesn't mince words or shy away from firm advice. She is a staunch advocate of natural rearing, natural healing, and caring responsibly for one's animal companions, and is not modest about the success of her methods. Some animal lovers may find the advice to feed primarily on raw meat off-putting, and those who advocate for rescue will note that Levy speaks for and from the world of breeders, but it is undeniable that she speaks with conviction about the well being of her animals and believes in acting in an animal's best interest with regard to care. I recommend this book for anyone raising a puppy or dog, anyone interested in curing or abating a mammalian ailment, and anyone wanting to improve their understanding of herbs and natural healing methods in general. A beautiful, informative read.

Phenomenal woman; incredible book. I refer to this book often when I have a question about nutrition or planning a new diet for my dogs.
