This is a sexy edition to a story that brought me to the realisation that, thanks to Shalene Marie, historical romance was something by that could be as addictive and compelling as other genres. Shalene Marie shows us, yet again, that her talent into bringing historical romance to full technicolour life is alive, well and thriving.

Brock is the epitome of someone who should not be judged on the outer shell and persona he puts forth. He is a man with many layers and I absolutely loved seeing the layers fall away and the real Brock comes to the forefront.

He’s a true alpha male, very dominant with a strong moral compass for right and wrong, yet he also has a beautifully soft side that just melts your heart. His relationship with his family is so touching and heartfelt.

I can’t say I was enthralled with his wayward ways and his inability to see Haley. But watching him slowly come to the realisation that Haley was a woman of immense beauty, a woman who brought light to his life was so beautiful. As his layers peeled back you can plainly see the man he was always meant to be. I came to the realisation that up until that point Brock had gone through life protecting his heart. He had an unconditional love for his mother and brothers, but he protected his heart to others, so it was beautiful to watch him soften to Haley and whether he wanted to admit it or not he began to unconsciously open his heart to her. Heartachingly beautiful to watch.

This is a spicier version of the original book and I think that Shalene Marie really fit this well into the story. It allows us to really see Brocks domineering side and Haley’s willingness to give herself over to him. The chemistry was off the charts and it was refreshing to see how sexually freeing people could be despite the time in which it was based.

Haley is an absolutely stunning character. I think that maybe people don’t notice her is because she’s spent so long believing others opinions that she maybe subconsciously makes herself as invisible as possible. What I don’t think she realises is just how beautiful she is. She portrays a beautiful warmth and light that encompasses everyone in the vicinity. You can’t help but feel brighter and mentally better after seeing her. She has an openness and honesty that is so refreshing. She is a genuinely kind and empathetic person and, in my experience, a very rare and special treasure in society, not only in the past but today too.

My heart ached for her, the pain of living with a man you have feelings for and believe that he doesn’t reciprocate them at all must have been devastating for her, but she held herself together and despite the turmoil she faced, she continued to smile and be the beautiful person she was.

I loved the bond she had with her brother. They had each others backs and gave unconditional love and support without a thought it was so beautiful to see and I thought that the presence of the brother added an extra something special to Haley’s already beautiful character.

I wanted to reach through the pages at each miscommunication and misunderstanding they had that kept them at cross purposes, tell them to stop and just listen. They were both guilty of making assumptions. Despite that though their chemistry and invisible bond was strong and true. I think that when they were intimate was the only time they were both honest and open in their feelings. It was like they were both trying to show their feelings through touch and actions rather than words. It was as heartbreaking as much as it was beautiful.

This is a story full of a depth that will take your breath away and emotions that will knock the wind out of you.

Shalene Marie has once again outdone herself, bringing us another fantastic story, a story that will captivate and enthral you. A phenomenal version of a story that was already, in my opinion, perfect.

Absolutely unforgettable read!!!!!!!!

I loved Scandal the first time around, but this new edition feels like a new level. The writing is stronger, smoother, and more polished, but kept all the twists, tension, and emotions that I loved the first time around.
Brock still made me want to grab his shoulders and demand he communicate with his wife already, and the mystery kept me guessing right up until the reveal. Even knowing the ending, I found myself getting pulled right back into the story and second-guessing everyone all over again.
This edition also turns up the heat. The added scenes were well written, fit the story, and will absolutely delight readers who enjoy a spicier historical romance. The romance feels more mature overall, and the deeper look into the relationship made the emotional moments that much more touching.
One of my favorite surprises was noticing little sparks between some of the side characters that I overlooked the first time. A few scenes left me very interested in certain future possibilities. A little glimpse behind the bedroom door of Clem and Daniel, perhaps?
A great read if you enjoy historical romance with drama, secrets, mystery, and steam enough to keep you turning pages late into the night.

one of a handful of non fantasy books I absolutely love!

Honestly I forgot how much I loved this book, and this edited 18+ edition tops it.

The scandals the intrigue the feelings this books provokes within is absolutely phenomenal.

Honestly I don’t read these types of books often (gas lamp works of fiction, my brand is sci-fi/paranormal/fantasy books) but this is one of my all-time favs.

Key points in no particular order:
- M/F
- plain Jane/wallflower FMC
- scandal
- Mean girl/bully
- red ruM
- being framed
- marriage of convenience/scandal
- gas lamp story
- spicy 4/5
- She falls first

I loved the original version of this book already, but a spiced up version? Sign me right up! Yes, it was still the same beautiful story, and I can't even begin to say how much I adore Haley, and how yummy Brock is, but this new version is another level of awesomeness. It's intense, delicious, and keeps you reading!

If you like historical romance, this is a must read... but if you don't normally read historical, I'd say give this a try. It has everything, mystery, intrigue, romance, love, spice (oh yes), scandal (of course), and it delivers it in a way that doesn't bog you down with masses of historical worldbuilding. You just won't be able to stop reading!!

great read with some extra heat

I always love reading Shalene’s stories and this one brings some extra heat. Having a slightly different take on this new version, I truly disliked Annabelle right from the start and (spoiler alert) I can’t say I was sad when she paid for her misdeeds. I loved watching Haley grow in confidence and Brock find his sweet nurturing side. I very much look forward to more books from Shalene.
