Saint Patrick

In his Confessions, Patrick dearly describes how the direction of his life was marked by visionary experiences. The same spiritual vigor and conviction are found in the famous Lorica, or "breastplate of St. Patrick" -- a lyrical prayer for Christ's protection.

A wonderful book that gives us an impression of St. Patrick's life in his own words (via translation) during the 5th century in Britain and Ireland. This work comprises three parts: The Letter to the soldiers of Coroticus (a 5th century British prince, possibly identified with the Welsh prince, Ceredig, founder of the principality of Cardigan), The Confession of St. Patrick, and The Lorica (Patrick's Breast-plate). Here's an excerpt from The Confession of St. Patrick:

"So indeed I must accept with equanimity whatever befalls me, be it good or evil, and always give thanks to God, who taught me to trust in Him always without hesitation, and who must have heard my prayer so that I, however ignorant I was, in the last days I dared to undertake such a holy and wonderful work--thus imitating somehow those who, as the Lord once foretold, would preach His Gospel for a testimony to all nations before the end of the world. So we have seen it, and so it has been fulfilled: indeed, we are witnesses that the Gospel has been preached unto those parts beyond which there lives nobody."

Much much shorter than St. Augustine's Confessions, but insightful in giving us a glimpse into the soul of this great saint. Next up for me in terms of biographies of St. Patrick: John E. Beahn's version.
