The author of Heat “captured words from the heart” in this collection of stories and firsthand accounts of life in the FDNY from fifteen of New York’s Bravest (Library Journal). In New York City, an average of eleven fires are reported every hour of the day and night, 365 days a year. Now, hear the stories behind the news reports, as America’s courageous fire fighters tell their stories in their own words This is the real story of the men whose lives are dedicated to answering the calls for help. Intense and terrifying, Braving the Flames chronicles the experiences of men who give their blood and sweat to save lives, sometimes at the cost of their own.
Best Book ever if you are a fire buff or you just want some gripping true life events about the City of New York during the 60s and 70s aka "The Bronx is Burning." The book is divided into chapters with each chapter being written by different firefighters, fire officers, commissioners and dispatchers from the FDNY. One of the best stories told is by a Dispatcher who (without spoiling the book) writes about a 911 call he received one night from a very calm elderly woman who wanted to report a fire next door to her building. She calmly stated the address, told the dispatcher to hold on while she went to check something, upon her return she said, "You better bring the mother f*cking cherry picker because the flames are shootin' through the roof!" Classic read!
