An incredibly good, highly detailed examination of Spanish costume in the crucial years before Catherine of Aragon brought its innovations to England when she wed the future King Henry VIII. There are plenty of detailed photographs of original artworks showing every aspect of Spanish dress carefully explained, from the very weird origins of the popular sixteenth-century hoop skirt (the hoops were originally mounted on the outside) of the skirts!) to the discussion of the forms of men's sleeves.
Perhaps the only drawback to this book is that nearly all of the illustrations are black-and-white. It is also regrettable that there is no cover art. My copy seems to want a dust jacket, but as it was bought new like this, I suppose there must not be one.
This is an analysis of the fashions in Spain and Portugul circa 1480-1530. It includes long chapters on when the "high fashion" depicted in royal portraits would've been worn, as we a a piece-by-piece analysis of the garments and accessories. It has a lot of black and white pictures.
