The author is my wife, so yes, I’m biased. But I’m genuinely impressed by what this story dares to do.
Darius is an autistic, non-verbal five-year-old—living decades before autism had a name. Set against the hardships of the Depression-era American South, the “waking world” feels authentic, while the fantasy is imaginative without ever feeling random.
Darius is never used as a trope. He’s portrayed as a young boy needing understanding, not repair. The story doesn’t define speech as his “cure” or “normal” as the goal. As an uncle to an autistic nephew, that matters to me—and this feels both grounded and respectful.
Darius’s dream experiences with his dragon guide, Azure, feel organic—an extension of his inner life. Azure also models early intervention at its best: attuned, steady, and meeting Darius where he is as he learns to communicate and manage his frustration.
I’ve watched Darius’s story take shape up close over the past 18 years. Likewise, I’ve seen the companion original soundtrack come together, creating an unusually immersive and genuinely novel experience. The author is a special-needs teacher specializing in students with profound needs; the composer raised an autistic child as a single father. That lived experience gives both the book and the music a deeply personal foundation.
The Color of Silence is book one in a series that will follow Darius through his 100-year life and his continuing bond with Azure.
Book + soundtrack release: June 20, 2026.
Bias and all, I’d still tell you to read the book—ideally while listening to the soundtrack.
What a blessing to be granted the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book. It's difficult to explain the beauty captured in these pages. I have dear ones who deal with similar challenges. After feasting on Darius' beautiful story, I will never look at them with the same eyes. A Grandson who has blossomed into the most amazing and beautiful soul and a daughter who withheld nothing to help him in that journey; not to mention an amazing son-in-law and wife/grandma who helped in untold ways. Thank you Darius, Sadie, Azure, Cassius, Pyrrhos, Lula, Augustus, Mrs. Jenkins, Miss Thompson - for opening my eyes to the wonder these children bring to our world. Powerful messages seem to pour from each page; in words or deep felt impressions of thought and emotion. So many stories intertwined and brilliantly expressed. Tears flowed easily. What a gift!! I can't wait to get my printed copy.
Color of Silence hit me in a way few books ever have—I didn’t just read it, I lived it. As a parent of an autistic child, every page felt deeply personal, capturing the quiet struggles, the misunderstood moments, and the fierce, unwavering love that often goes unseen by the world. It gave words to emotions I’ve carried for years—the fear, the hope, the exhaustion, and the beauty—and did so with honesty and grace. This isn’t just a story; it’s a reflection of a journey so many of us walk, and it made me feel seen in a way I didn’t expect
