FOR JOHNNY STONE – OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS! Wow, I have to admit that the eye-catching cover drew me to this book. A feast of muscle – both back and front. I was intrigued by Johnny - the 70s gay world of the Coleherne Arms in Earl’s Court and the El Sombrero club in Kensington; the inter-relationships that Johnny forms with his London friends and enemies (the wonderful tragi-comic Sixty-Nine being one of the former); the dangers that Johnny can’t help but draw to himself (sometimes at gunpoint!). Does Johnny ask for everything he gets -good and bad? He knows he’s a gorgeous hunk; those around him know he’s a gorgeous hunk. He cannot help drawing attention to himself. Attribution-wise he makes Tom of Finland’s musclemen look like Pee-Wee Herman’s soul brothers. Yes, there’s lots of sex in FLEX, but it goes with the territory (the story). The characters were great, I thought, and the story of muscle-hunk Johnny’s escape from the debris of a downtime life to a world of opportunity in London worked well. Johnny Stone’s story certainly flexed for me! It’s the early 70s…Johnny leaves his Leicestershire home for the bright lights of London… Alongside his old school pal – now a London local – and some of Earls Court’s trans glitterati, Johnny uses his rippling muscles and hidden talents to carve a unique and individual path through the Smoke… From a sauna-cum-massage parlour to the Soho Syndicate’s illegal bareknuckle meets… From ‘muscle game’ bodybuilding success to a TV spotlight… And finally, possible worldwide success…
