Elusive Umbra #2
Of Dreams & Ash
I was taught that magick was forbidden; an evil that should be eradicated. Though I saw just as much malice in those without it. There was never an escape from the nightmares. They plagued my sleep and bled into my reality. Conceding to the shadows that were ever present finally revealed that there is truth hidden in the tenebrous edges of dreams.
Born of shadow and raised by the hand of darkness, one spark ignites a change neither of us expected. Together, we have to decide how to navigate the flames because where fire burns, smoke rises, and what is hidden behind the ashen veil is all we are left with.
In a world that fosters fear, kingdoms collide as the night is claimed, and only those who withstand the flames will be deemed worthy to reign.

"There is not a world that I wouldn't burn if it meant I kept that fire alive. I would let everything around us crumble to ash from the heat of our flame."
This story was the perfect continuation of book one. I was already invested in the story after reading the first book, but then the author came in and said let me make sure you are OBSESSED! This story completely consumed me: the magic, the darkness, the tension, the secrets, and the romance. Astraea and Kyros had me in a chokehold, the romance and yearning practically came off the pages. The character development was everything for me in this book. One of my favorite things was getting to see the growth that came from everything the characters went through in the first book. I loved watching Astraea begin to understand herself and her power. The found family was another aspect that I loved in this book. I fell in love with the side characters; they had purpose and their own personalities instead of simply existing around the main couple. This book was dark, addictive, emotional, and impossible to put down.

"They say that love is a weakness, but that can't be true. When I look at her-when she looks at me the way she is now-I only feel power. The power of my love for this woman knows no bounds. It could end worlds; sever the very thread that the gods use to weave the tapestry of life itself."
"The world is cruel, because human beings are cruel. Fate is just a word. A word that gives people a reason to believe they don't have the power to change the outcome of their life."
"Careful, Shula, the gods may think there is another deity you wish to worship with the way you just said my name."
"Your past-no matter how dark and gray you think it was-gives you the strength to face your fears today."
"Love is destructive; like fire, it's all consuming. And the thing about using someone's love as a weapon is the fact that when you add flame to an already raging fire, you're more than likely going to be burned."

Of Nightmares & Fire was one of my top reads last year (devoured in a single sitting), and I could not wait to get my hands on the conclusion of this duet. I would definitely recommend rereading Of Nightmares & Fire (if it's been a while) before picking up Of Dreams & Ash. I got up to 15% of ODAA before admitting I was a bit lost, and then went back to do a reread of ONAF, which helped.
ODAA delivers lots of tension, more backstories, character growth, found family, and vile villains. Things are not easy between Astraea and Kyros in this book, especially given their circumstances, but their connection is undeniable. Also, my man Kyros always has a way with his words:
“Since you walked into my life, I knew you were the star guiding me to salvation; the flame leading me to ruination.”
“Shula, the trails I have been given by the gods throughout my life have offered me many paths to follow, but no matter which I were to take, they would always end with you.”
"The power of my love for this woman knows no bounds. It could end worlds; sever the very thread that the gods use to weave the tapestry of life itself. I am the darkness in her shadow. The fury in her fire. And yet, her love is everything I covet."
I adore Colette, who is such a top-tier friend, and the direction the magic took in this one! I am staying hopeful for more from this world at some point because I would love to read more about Mavros and Zinya (who don't get a ton of page time in this book) and to learn more about a certain legendary beast. I enjoyed the inclusion of the epilogue at the end so we could see what the characters have been up to. That being said, I did struggle a bit with the pacing of this one. The first half was slow, and then it picked up during the last 40%. Overall, this is a satisfying conclusion to the beloved Elusive Umbra duet!
The Elusive Umbra duet has the perfect vibes for the fall season! Now's the time to binge this complete duet!

✨Of Dreams and Ash✨
I have thoroughly enjoyed being an arc reader for all of Blake’s books and getting to see another series come to an end is so beautiful.
Book 1, Of Nightmares and Fire, was a book I completely adored. It featured a soft FMC, hidden identities, marriage trials, found family, unique magics, and a sandman shadow daddy that was the epitome of grumps. ODAA begins right where we left off and gives us SO much emotion and development between our MCs. We follow them, their relationship, and the pieces of half truths and betrayals that lay in their wake. Book two moves at a cozy pace, setting us up for multiple reveals, plot twists, and an epic end.
The romance and dual pov was so delicious and I loved getting to be in our MCs’ heads. Astraea is such a lovely FMC and Cole is the perfect best friend. Kyros is sad boi simp 👩🍳💋. The tension, yearning, and spice was SO DELICIOUS. I love the way Blake navigated us through it.
Tropes you may find in ODAA are forced proximity, fated bonds, found family, banter, hidden identities, betrayals, forbidden love, unique magics, medium spice, tension and yearning, hair tucks, nickname, 🔥 the world for her, mythical creatures, and a HEA.
Thank you, Blake, for this gifted arc!

The Elusive Umbra duet is a story of hidden magick and forbidden love, of mythical creatures and monsters born from nightmares. A story of a young woman trying to forge her own path despite the obstacles. A tale brimming with political intrigue and deadly trials. Forced proximity and found family. A story that will keep you guessing, keep you teetering on the edge of discovery, and keep you aching to know what comes next and who.
The answers we yearned for were given to us in the epic conclusion, Book 2, Of Dreams and Fire. But trust me, the answers came only after new questions and mysteries arose. They kept me intrigued and kept me turning pages, pulling me deeper into the need to solve them.
Astraea and Kyros's story got the ending it deserved. After all the hardships, all the heartache, they are finally at peace, building a life together with their found family. They are at peace and, in turn, so am I. So, thank you, Blake, for gifting us all what we needed. Thank you.
And thank you for allowing me to read and experience this story early.

This was such a nice conclusion to Astraea and Kyros’s journey. I admired the tension between them and the longing. They’re magnetic!
The way this story unfolds and circles back is exactly what I needed after book one. It pulls at your heartstrings and is a wonderful adaptation of love in a dark fantasy. Blake Gallows is so creative when it comes to her world building that I genuinely admire it. The villains are villainous and the heroes have their flaws but the character arcs are redeeming.
Kyros will forever be an mmc in my top 10 because of the yearning and forced proximity. It had me giggling and kicking my feet throughout.
The plot twists I was not expecting and they stung but they definitely answered a lot of questions I had!
I loved this duology and highly recommend!

Divine Blessed WOW !!!!!
Following right behind Of Nightmares and Fire the journey Astraea and Kyros become everything that happens when things burn. The constant nightmares don't stop .... but the more Astraea discovers, the more her internal flame ignites. The Princess raised in abuse not only uncovers truths about the kingdoms BUT also herself.
There is so much I want to say but I refuse to spoil anything.
This book had me swooning, gasping in anticipation, grrr-ing in frustration, expressive in my confusion as more uncovered, sat at the edge of my seat and even had to walk away a couple of times to gather my thoughts. I love this duology and the way everything unfolded ... even if it scared me to keep going!! ✨️📚✨️

When a new Blake Gallow’s book comes out, clear my schedule! I don’t want anything to keep me from reading her books. Book 2 in her Elusive Umbra Duology is here and Of Dreams and Ash was something I could not put down. I read it in a quick amount of time, less than a day, and don’t regret the sleep I lost over it. While this holds the vibes and tone of the first book, the stakes were higher, emotions grew deeper, and the romance burned hotter.
Within this duology the storyline is amazing. It is perfectly paced, consistent, and cohesive. Now I like open door spice in my books, however if the story wouldn’t be the same without it, it does lose points. Blake definitely writes a story that even if the open door scenes were all removed, you would still have tension, yearning, and sweet romance. The storyline is enhanced by this, not dependent and I loved being pulled into the storyline as a whole and not just to see our MCs hook up. The questions left from book 1 are answered and everything comes to a wonderful ending. I will say that due to this being a duology it can seem as though the story unfolds quicker, but I don’t think so.
Astraea and Kyro show up strong once again. Everything they go through, they know the other is waiting on the other side, which fuels them to keep moving forward. Their bond is spectacular to witness and I loved seeing them back together. Blake may have not made their journey easy, but ultimately worth everything they go through. She keeps us on our toes though, with twists and turns, so the story never becomes stale. Combine that with Blake’s epic ability to world build, you are truly captivated and pulled into this world.
Blake is an author that I personally know and can see her passion in everything she writes. She pours everything she has into the development of her stories. As this book was supposed to be released sooner than it was, it goes to prove that Blake will not release a book just for the sake of releasing it. She will work on the story until everything works. She puts her blood, sweat, and tears into every story she writes and it is beyond evident when you read them.
As always, review any author notes before reading.

I AM OBSESSED. What an absolutely incredible way to finish Astraea and Kyros’s story! I was already completely invested after book one, but somehow Blake Gallows managed to make me even more emotionally unwell in this book. 😂 The tension between these two?! The yearning?! The forced proximity?! KYROS?! Sir, I need you to calm down because I was giggling, kicking my feet, and losing my mind over these two.
And the STORY. 👏🏼 The magic, the lore, the secrets, the betrayals, the twists—I was eating it ALL up. So many pieces that had been sitting in the back of my mind finally clicked into place, but there were still reveals I absolutely did not see coming. Some of them genuinely hurt, too. 😭 I loved watching everything unfold while getting more of this incredibly creative world and seeing the characters grow along the way. Astraea is such a badass, and I loved that she never stopped fighting, even when things got brutal.
The banter, the chemistry, the emotional damage, the perfectly placed spice… THIS BOOK HAD EVERYTHING. 🖤 And somehow Blake Gallows managed to give me the epic fantasy feelings AND the romance obsession I wanted without letting either one overpower the other.
I adored this entire duology and honestly could have stayed in this world so much longer. Kyros has officially secured a permanent spot on my list of favorite MMCs, and Blake Gallows has absolutely become an auto-read author for me. If you love dark fantasy romance with incredible world-building, delicious tension, secrets, betrayal, unexpected twists, and characters you become way too emotionally attached to—READ THIS SERIES. Immediately. 😂🖤

Of Dreams and Ash by Blake Gallows is a dark, atmospheric fantasy romance that brings together danger, forbidden magick, and the hope of something better. As the second book in the Elusive Umbra duet, it builds on a world where fear shapes what people believe and the choices they make. That struggle between accepting what you have been taught and discovering the truth gives the story an intriguing foundation.
One of my favorite elements is the contrast between darkness and hope. In a world filled with threats and uncertainty, the connection between the characters gives the story its emotional heart. Love carries greater weight when trusting someone means becoming vulnerable, questioning your beliefs, and risking the life you have always known.
The atmosphere is another standout. Shadows, fire, and ash create a haunting backdrop that fits the story’s themes of destruction and change. There is something powerful about the idea that the very thing capable of destroying everything can also become the beginning of something new. That thread gives the darkness a sense of purpose and makes the possibility of change feel meaningful.
With kingdoms in conflict and difficult choices ahead, the stakes reach beyond the romance. The combination of personal vulnerability and larger struggles for power makes this an appealing read for anyone who enjoys fantasy romance with danger, emotional tension, and a shadowy setting. Of Dreams and Ash offers a compelling blend of darkness and possibility—the kind of story that invites you to wonder what can survive the flames and what might rise from the ashes.

Book one was one of my top reads last year, so my anticipation for this finale was unreasonable.
We’re thrown straight back into this beautifully dark fever dream of magick, scheming, and nightmares, right where book one left us. Blake’s writing is hauntingly beautiful, pulling you so deep into this world that reality can wait its dang turn.
Astrea...her character growth!! Watching this girl come into her own has been one of my favorite reading experiences this year.
And Kyros *sigh* My broody, emotionally stunted Sandman king who actually learns from his mistakes and lets Astrea find her own path while supporting her? YESSSS, YOUR MAJESTY!!!
The nightmares are still haunting, the mysteries keep multiplying, and every answer somehow spawned eleventy more questions. I spent this entire book trying to connect the dots while Blake gleefully rearranged the puzzle pieces.
The found family? I am OBSESSED! Every single one of them has my heart. And if anyone knows how to get Shayd to my house, please advise.
The ending!!! I had questions, theories, and a growing sense of how on earth is this going to wrap up?!
There were tears. There were feelings. There were moments I was absolutely convinced I knew where things were going. (I did not.)
But Blake brought it all together so perfectly. Every question answered, every emotion felt, and a conclusion that did this duology justice.
Blake Gallows....Ma'am... whatever you write next, consider me already in line!!

Received this book as an Arc from the author:
The Elusive Umbra duet is a dark fantasy filled with hidden magic, forbidden love, mythical creatures, nightmare-born monsters, political intrigue, and deadly trials. This book picks up immediately after Book 1: Of Nightmares and Fire and I was so excited to immediately be thrown back into this world with these characters.
This book picks up where the first left off, dan the YEARNING between Astraea and Kyros was top notch. Astraea really comes into herself as she uncovers not only truths about the kingdoms, but also her own strength and identity. Blake Gallows’s worldbuilding is wonderfully imaginative, the villains are truly villainous, and the character arcs feel earned and deeply satisfying.
Astraea is a lovely, resilient FMC, and Kyros is everything I want in a dark fantasy MMC: grumpy, devoted, yearning, and completely magnetic. Their forced proximity, fated connection, forbidden love, banter, tension, and spice were delicious. I love a dual POV in books and this book did not disappoint.
Readers can expect forced proximity, fated bonds, hidden identities, betrayals, found family, unique magic, mythical creatures, political intrigue, tension, and so much yearning. I loved this duology and highly recommend it to dark fantasy romance readers.

Thank you to the author for a gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Of Dreams and Ash is book 2 in the Elusive Umbra series and it is filled with forbidden magic, secrets, and romance all mixed together with a beautifully written world I can’t get enough of. I loved experiencing the growth of the characters throughout this duology and for them to come into their own. I fell in love with Astraea and Kyros and everything they had to endure. The found family always makes a book that more special for me and it was delivered here. There is a lot to uncover, and it was magical experiencing it all unfold. The pacing was perfect for the journey that was laid out. I was so excited to be back in this world and the creative spin on everything. There were plots twists I was not expecting and I loved how everything came together. Overall, this was a great read and I can’t wait to see what Blake has in store next.
If you love dark fantasy romance, Sandman/Freddy Kruger inspired magick, hidden magick, forbidden love, political intrigue, mythical creatures, dune pirates, touch her and bye, forced proximity, witchy elements, and prophecies & betrayal then I recommend checking out this duology.

This was a perfect continuation of book one. OMG this was so good! I'm so glad I got the opportunity to be at Arc reader.
Getting the double POV and the romance development in this book. I ate it up. This book literally took me and consumed my whole entire thought. It definitely did take me a little bit longer to read just because I had a lot of things going on. But aside from that, every single time I picked up my book to read it or my Kindle to read it, I was sat. I was not moving.
Astraea and Cole I have the cutest friendship ever. A small part of me really wanted them together but another part of me was like it just wouldn't be the same. But the tension and yearning literally was everything.
The book literally picks up right where book one leaves off and being able to get both of their narratives as well as getting to learn where their head was while they navigated all this. Especially all the lies and truths being told like all this information that they had and all the things going on with them it was nice to see like their perspective of it. But definitely had a lot of twists and turns throughout the whole entire plot that I absolutely also very much love.

Especially all the lies and truths being told like all this information that they had and all the things going on with them it was nice to see like their perspective of it. But definitely had a lot of twists and turns throughout the whole entire plot that I absolutely also very much love.

If you’re a lover of dark romantasy, Of Dreams and Ash by Blake Gallows isn’t a recommendation it’s a requirement. This duology consumed me in the best possible way. Book one was a 10/10, this one is a 10/10, and at this point Blake could publish a cookbook and I’d still be preordering. Blake is a puppet master and my emotions are the strings.
We dive straight back in from book one. The plot is plotting, the schemes are scheming, and Kyros is brooding like he’s trying to win a gold medal.
There were moments I thought I knew where the story was heading and Blake said “psych ” and threw me through a loop. Every secret is a trapdoor. Every shadow is watching. Every nightmare feels like it’s waiting for you to close your eyes.
The character development? Phenomenal.
The worldbuilding? Magically nightmarish.
Kingdoms clashing, shadow daddies with extreme Daddy issues, it’s the exact serotonin hit dark romantasy girlies crave.
By the end, I wasn’t resisting.
I was conceding to the shadows 💀

After book one I was hanging on this brutal cliffy, so I was very excited to read book two picked up right where book one left off.
I really love this world with sandman/Freddy Kruger inspired magic and Prince Of Persia meets Scorpion King meets Witcher vibes so I was glad to be back.
A lot of secrets that we learn about at the end of book one are being slowly unraveled and the relationship between Astraea and Kyros grows deeper and intenser. I absolutely loved it when Kyros finally let go and just morphed into his true obsessive possessive shadow daddy self! And the transformation of Astraea from damsel in distress to blade weilding baddy was very satisfying!
I can't say too much without spoilers so run and dive in yourself!

This one picked up right where book one left off and boy did I dive right in! After book one's cliffhanger I was so excited to get back into the story.
I missed my girl, Astraea and my maaaaaaaaan KYROS 😫🙌 tlThe relationship and chemistry between these two is ap captivating and I love how KYROS let's her take the time to work through her feelings and process everything that's happened to her.
The political intrigue continues! The different aspects of this world and the mystery behind those who are running the show always keeps my wheels turning and this story kept me well fed!! The secrets and betrayals that are brought to life had me clutching my pearls but I couldn't put it down!! The ending was eeeverything I needed it to be!!
I absolutely love this series so much and I love Blake's writing. I can't wait to get more of her books on my shelf and I cannot recommend her and her work enough!

I just finished this book and WOW the ending!!! I ARC read the first book and it was a 5 ⭐ loved it book. For me I feel like I should have re read the first book before reading this one. Although it started right where it left off, I struggled connecting with the characters, some of the pacing, and the chemistry between the characters.
The FMC and MMC are put through the ringer and the first half of the book was mostly them escaping danger and spice.
The second half was when things started to get intense and when I really started to enjoy the book. I really liked the magic and monsters as that was some of my favorite things about the first book. The second half moved very fast and you almost felt like you couldn't blink and accidentally miss something. I almost felt like it should have been a trilogy because I have so many questions and wished we could have been given more in a few areas regarding the plot and magic.

This was a great conclusion everything wrapped up nicely, and I didn't feel like there were gaps. I appreciated that the plot was not overly complex and when we hit the climax, I felt everything made sense and clicked. Also, There was a backstory that had me absolutely sobbing, and although I saw it coming it was still absolutely heartbreaking. The character development of Astraea was beautifully done. Additionally, I thought this defintley felt like continuation of Book 1 and not simply a copy/paste of book one, which I feel other duets do, it continued the story and closed the gaps.
Kyros and Astraea had amazing chemistry and the tension between them was chefs kiss! Also, Kyros is definitely a top tier book boyfriend, I love his possessive side 🖤
I do wish we had more of the side characters though, such as Mavros and Zinya. However, I am hopeful maybe we will get a spin off.... overall, 1000% recommend this duet.

Thank you to Blake Gallows for sending me an ARC of book two in the Elusive Umbra series, Of Dreams & Ash! I was hooked from the very beginning of book one and absolutely dying to know what would happen next. Thankfully, book two picks up right where the first left off and completely captivated me from page one. Blake Gallows does not hold back, and this dynamic duo is everything! With magic, intricate lore, and one badass FMC who refuses to give up, this book was nothing short of spectacular. The world-building and character development are top-tier, and the banter was phenomenal. If you love a dark and twisty paranormal read filled with secrets, betrayal, perfectly placed spice, and plenty of moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this series is a must read! Blake Gallows has easily become one of my auto-buy/read authors, and I cannot recommend this series enough!

ODAA picks up right where we left off in ONAF ends so it’s extremely satisfying to enter back in the chaos. from there, it took me about the 38p mark to get fully invested in the story, since the pace starts much slower than I expected. this felt much different than ONAF, where with that plot I was obsessed the second the story began. book 2s plot went in a direction I wasn’t fully expecting which is fine, but it didn’t pull me in as I expected. I LOVED the groveling from Kyros and tension between them as Astraea navigates between her head and her heart. there were several twists, turns, and reveals that led to an outpouring of questions but thankfully the questions were answered by the end! the ending felt a little abrupt to me but I loved the epilogue and the happiness radiating from the characters.
thank you so much to Blake for this eARC in exchange for an honest review!

The world was put in hold so I could read this 6-star story!!
I fell into the world in book 1, and book was better!!
Astraea is a strong FMC. I love that she takes her scares (both inside and outside) to make her stronger. She is insanely protective of her found family and those who are not able to protect themselves.
Kyros (swoon) is my favorite type of MMC. He is fierce protective while never standing in Astraea's way. He trains her and stands beside her in battle.
The secrets revealed were amazing!! I can usually put pieces together and figure out most secrets, but NOT here. I was left in total, gasping shock at some of the revelations.
I have loved everything Blake Gallows has written!!

Damn Blake! You really had me going from giggling to being all in my feels and I loved every minute of it!!
Chapter 12, yeah you know the scene, the bathtub 😂 I laughed so hard at those two, Kyros & Astraea!
I loved that they worked through the betrayal & it wasn’t an instant “I forgive you.” And they literally had to fight for everything, for the ones they loved plus each other.
Now, ma’am, I was totally surprised about Astraea’s parents which had me all in my feels crying 😭
But, you delivered with an amazing ending to a dark & wonderful duet!
You guys got to pick up this duet!! You won’t be disappointed!!
***A special thank you to author, Blake Gallows, for the opportunity to read & review this ARC! I am voluntarily leaving this honest review. ***

This duel book series is everything!!
Blake Gallows does not hold back.
The heart wrenching journey that these characters have to go through is exhilarating. I was literally devouring this book nonstop.
It’s a thick one!! But also felt like it ended so soon!!
The story is filled with magic, lore, Freddy cruger vibes, and an FMC who refuses to quit.
Even when doubting herself, her friends, her everything, she still gets up and chooses to fight and not let herself be broken by her circumstances and lasts.
If you’re looking for your next paranormal romance this is it. You will laugh, cry, scream and enjoy every moment.

This was SUCH a great book! 😍 It wrapped up everything from book 1 so well and answered so many of the questions I had. I’m absolutely OBSESSED with Kyros, my favorite shadow daddy! 🖤🔥 And Astrea?! A whole shadow baddie! 🖤✨
The world building in this duology was incredible. I loved the way the author described the magic, the shadows, and especially the nightmare creatures. Everything felt so vivid and atmospheric, and I could picture it all so easily. The tension, the twists, the romance, and the way everything came together in the end had me completely hooked.
I’m definitely not ready to leave this world yet! 🖤🌙✨ Its definitely in my top 3 of favorite duologies.

In a world where nothing comes without a price, book two throws us straight back into the fire with Astraea and Kyros, as freedom, loyalty, and personal choices collide.
The deeper I ventured into the story, the more the stakes climbed. Dangerous travels, ravenous challenges, forbidden emotions and bonds forged under pressure kept pulling me further in, leaving me hooked with the top tier passion, our two MCs delighted us with leading right up through those final moments ...
Showcasing a world built on fear, whispers of what’s to come, adding in forbidden love elements, forced proximity vibes, new found family, betrayal and enough tension to keep the pages turning.

This is definately for those who like their romance with the I’m a monster, no, I’m the monster banter and enough shadow magic to make any goth kid cry. Kyros and Astraea spend less time actually ruling their kingdom and more time staring into each other's souls while everything around them burns ... literally. It’s spicy, it’s dramatic, and I’m pretty sure if insurance existed in this mystical world that fire hazard insurance premium in the kingdom would for sure be astronomically high. The Elusive Umbra Duology was beautifully written, Kyros and his Shula journey worth reading.

This book thankfully picked up right in the aftermath of the events at the end of book 1, so we are thrown right back in it. Astraea and Kyros have really gone through it but their world was not done with them yet. There are new twists and turns that I was not prepared for. Lots of new questions pop up but thankfully we get answers as well. We also got great banter, yearning and spice. I don't want to spoil anything but know that I was on a rollercoaster here. I really enjoyed this book and it was such a good ending to their story.

It was absolutely fantastic. Not sure I could've asked for a better part two. I tend to be a person who can guess what will happen next but some of the things that happened took me by surprise. And I love it when a book can do that.
I was fortunite enough to be chosen to be an ARC reader for this book and I have had a great time reading both books from this duet. These are the first books I've read from Blake Gallows and I'll make sure to read more of them after this! I definitely recommend reading part one and two of the elusive umbra duet.
