PT "Grim Night Tales" é uma espécie de antologia de pequenos contos de terror narrados por uma criança que mantém um homem amarrado e vendado a uma cama, sem que nós saibamos ainda porquê.
Para mim, qualquer história de terror que consiga deixar-nos desconfortáveis é um sucesso, e aqui acontece exactamente isso. Houve várias histórias que me deixaram genuinamente desconfortável e, como li isto durante a noite, ainda tive aquela sensação de que conseguimos ouvir e ver coisas que não existem simplesmente porque estamos mais assustados do que o normal. Por isso, tenho de tirar o meu chapéu aos autores.
Vou saltar directamente para o próximo volume.

EN "Grim Night Tales" is a sort of anthology of short horror stories narrated by a child who has a man tied and blindfolded to a bed, while we still have no idea why.
For me, any horror story that manages to make me feel uncomfortable is a success, and this one does exactly that. There were several stories that genuinely made me uncomfortable, and because I was reading this at night, it also heightened that feeling that we can hear and see things that aren't really there simply because we're more frightened than usual. So I have to tip my hat to the authors.
I'm jumping straight into the next volume.

A terrifying, disturbing, scary manga full of short stories AND an overarching plot!
When I saw this one being announced as getting an English translation? I just knew I had to have it. And then the wait came. And then waiting for Libristo to deliver it. And then early April I could finally read it! And boy, I need more of this story because this one was so intriguing and so scary.
I had thought this one would just be anthology, so short stories. Just that. I was already happy with that. But then I quickly learned there is an overarching plot. A very messed up, disturbing, what the fuck is going on overarching plot. Before I get into the short stories let’s dive into the overarching plot. That is all about a girl in a hotel room. A cute girl. A crazy girl. And a guy tied up to the bed with a blindfold on and no way to speak. I am not sure what the guy did to the girl (or tried to do) but either way he is in a bad situation, I wonder if, as the volumes continue, we learn more about the guy and what he did and why he deserves various horrific things to happen to him. The girl? She has stories to tell. And some cough cough attributes to help tell them (or have the guy listen to her). Each new story has us return to that hotel room. See the girl go from cute to well… Higurashi-mode.
The stories she tells are strange/unsettling/weird. They range from a guy renting a cheap apartment with bonus guests, to scary dolls (we can of course not have a horror book without spooky dolls) who will fuck you over if you fuck with them, to suicide and a twist, to a woman who may or may not be a ghost, and there are more stories each one guaranteed to bring you some lovely nightmares and more fear of the dark (or smiling people, teehee). I really enjoyed each of the stories and they are perfectly spooky/scary if you are a horror lover like me. I also loved that we had a character returning in some stories, namely Editor Y. I am curious if we will see more of him in the next volumes.
The volume ends with a written short story which seemed to be OK at first but then progressively got more and more scary. People vanishing. A boy/guy wishing. I loved that this one was added and I hope that the the next volumes also bring their own short written story.
The art was just fantastic. It fitted so well with the stories told and amplified the spookiness/unsettlingness of it all. There are some scenes that will definitely haunt me for a long time, thanks for that, haha.
All in all, if you want something that will terrify the heck out of you, something that will give you nightmares? Be sure to read this amazing anthology. Perfect for Halloween in just 4 months.

yeah, this series is clearly trying to take point from one line the 100 stories that lead to my death, but without really understanding what makes that series so compelling…
none of the stories even really make sense, the twists are totally forced, and it tries to be creepy but isn’t… and the whole storyteller bit feels like they wanted to have SOMETHING in between that was unsettling like 100 stories does but didn’t really have a good idea and just came up with the first thing that crossed their mind

Unsettling, that’s the best feeling I can describe throughout my journey of reading this. It’s a compilation of horror stories being told by a girl who seemingly held a man hostage. However, she spoke on behalf of a man who wrote about occult stories? It does seem like something is not clicking because we have yet to be revealed about these characters. I think if you’re a fan of Zekkyou Gakkyuu, you may like this.

I strongly believe that horror is the best genre when it comes to anthology series. Typically, so long as the atmosphere is sufficiently spooky and the characters feel realistic, I’ll find something to enjoy.
This volume tells five different scary stories, all tied together by the young narrator. Her appearance was the reason I initially picked up this volume—she just looked so crazy and invested in the scary stories she was telling, I couldn’t help but want to be a part of her audience!
The female ghost
The first scary story we’re told is that of a haunted apartment building. A magazine editor is looking for materials for his next article when his friend tells him about a certain man with a strange living situation. The editor, knowing he’ll be able to write a good story about him, wastes no time paying the man a visit. When he gets there however, the horror is too real for him to handle. While the apartment is haunted, it’s not exactly by a ghost.
I found this to be a strong opening for the manga! While I didn’t feel all that attached to the characters, the twist at the end was both shocking and satisfying. It did leave me with some questions about what will happen to the man in a few years, but nevertheless, a strong opener.
The terrifying real estate
The second story focuses on a man who is forced to live in the absolute cheapest housing available in his area. So cheap, that there is black ooze dripping from the above apartment directly onto his bed. It’s terrifying enough even before anything supernatural happens, but just wait until you realize where the ooze is coming from.
Honestly, I didn’t enjoy this story nearly as much as the first. I found the protagonist to be easy to sympathise with, and found the art to compliment the more horrific bits. However, I didn’t find the supernatural happenings to be all that shocking, nor did I find the “twist” to be as hard hitting as the first story.
The doll heirloom
This was my favourite story in this volume! We follow a couple who is about to get married and start a new life together. There is just one thing standing in their way—the man’s antique doll. He sleeps with it in his arms, bathes it, dresses it, and generally treats it miles better than his own fiancee. She eventually has enough of her husband’s obsession with the doll and gives him an ultimatum: her or the doll. At first, she thinks she wins and will soon live a happy life with her husband, but the doll has other things in mind.
This short story puts a spin on the haunted doll trope! I loved the “an eye for an eye” angle it went with, and was pleasantly surprised with just how far they took it. I was also so happy that we got to see a bit of an origin story for the doll!
The man who was saved by a ghost
The next story follows a man who goes on a short vacation with his wife. The two visit a pier known for its view of the sunset when he gets a call from his coworker. This call completely shatters what had just been a lovely date, opening his eyes to a reality he had been ignoring. It turns out, this pier is not known for its beautiful views, but as a popular suicide spot. Why would his wife invite him there!?
While I thoroughly enjoyed the setup of this story, I think it would have been stronger without the twist at the end. It would have been a beautiful but spooky story about a man being saved by that ghost! With the twist, I was only left with questions. Like, if they were full of malice, why was he able to escape so easily? Are the ghosts able to escape the pier? I just don’t know…
Laugh
The final story follow a man being haunted by a smiling ghost. Every day, the ghost gets closer and closer to him, until…!
This was the story that left me wanting an even worse fate for the protagonist. Out of all the stories told in this volume, he was the only protagonist who I felt truly deserved what he went through. Everyone else was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I found all the twists and turns to be quite interesting, and enjoyed how it all came together perfectly in the end. I also liked how we got to see a bit more of the magazine editor back from story one—I love when anthologies allow characters from various stories to interact with each other!

All the various stories were super fun and eerie. I have one complaint, though. Throughout the entire manga, the girl from the bathroom was never explained….. How’d she get the guy into the hotel and what was her end goal? Was she a ghost, too? Maybe the ambiguity of her was the point, but it felt lazy to me.
Other than that, this was fun. Summertime is the best time to engage with the horror genre.

I feel bad about rating it so low but I just felt like it was trying too hard to be edgy. (I just really didn't like the girl. She was annoying to me. The stories themselves though, weren't really that scary either.
The art is good though.
I think the best story was the last one, to me it felt like the most chilling.
I hate how earlier in I think the second or third story, the fiance threw out the guy's doll from his late mom.

The art was amazing and the stories were definitely entertaining! I loved the ongoing transition story that really tied it all together, but my favorite one was DEFINITELY the one about Shoji-san at the end! I highly recommend (as long as its not too dark out 😅) this to everyone who loves scary stories!

A fun little quick read on the Midnight train home. I definitely would have eaten this up like sour candy about 12 years ago in middle school. I might donate it to my old school for the little weirdos like me who hide in the library at lunch and study hall to read horror and manga. Stay weird, Kiddo. It's way more fun that way ♡

I really enjoyed it!! If you’re a fan of Junji Ito I highly recommend this series! Fun, short, spooky stories that all have an eerie story. I really liked the art style as well!

maybe it’s because I don’t read manga but this was genuinely so confusing to me. the writing just didn’t flow and it wasn’t that scary
