About the author

Hans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H.C. Andersen) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories — called eventyr, or "fairy-tales" — express themes that transcend age and nationality.

Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Nightingale", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and many more. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films.

The translation is good, but I wish this edition had more and better illustrations instead of the few and far-between ink drawings it has. Would look much better with full-colour art, I think.

Siempre me ha gustado Andersen y elegí esta bonita edición para empezar a leérselo a mis niños de 6 y 8 años. Una vez inicié la lectura noté que las ilustraciones son un poco apagadas y a mi parecer no reflejan el colorido mundo que describe Andersen. Sin embargo me encontré con que cada noche mis niños iban a buscar por sí mismos el libro para continuar leyendo, y los tres lo disfrutamos mucho al final :)

Lo quería leer con la intención de conocer la verdadera historia de la sirenita, que era muy diferente a lo que muestran las películas de Disney (y sí era mucho más triste y cruel con un final agrio pero que da para reflexionar). La mayoría de los cuentos son deprimentes y con alto contenido de violencia como para ir dirigido a niños, lo que me hace recordar a la película Watership down que dejaba a los niños con traumas, eso da a entender la realidad que vivían los niños en el siglo XIX. Unas pocas historias tienen finales dignos y esperanzadores, pero más que los finales, lo que importa es la historia en sí, que cumplen la función de entretener y al ir dirigido a niños, de seguro los mantendrá concentrados, que con ayuda de las ilustraciones se favorece la lectura 👍

Gran colección de cuentos de Andersen, varios clásicos y muchos que no conocía. La lectura a veces es cansada y los niños tuvieron dificultades para leer algunas partes así como para entender algunos cuentos, varios se terminaron sin sentir que fué una historia interesante. Primer libro que no fue tan del agrado de los niños. Clasificado como "ok, esta bien el cuento y ¿cual es el que sigue?" un libro bonito y ya.

Mimo tego, że bardzo lubię sobie przypominać rzeczy, które czytałam jak byłam dzieckiem to o Andersenie mam wciąż to samo zdanie - w jego baśniach mi czegoś brakuje. I ten brak odczuwam zarówno teraz jak i odczuwałam go w młodości gdy czytałam jego zbiory.

Algunos cuentos no son para niños.
Todos tienen onomatopeyas muy simpáticas.
Mucho mensaje cristiano en los cuentos.
Demuestra que fue un gran viajero con sus descripciones de lugares.
Buenos recuerdos de mi infancia cuando mi mamá los leía a nosotros.

Estos cuentos los leí cuando era chico, y ahora que los vuelvo a leer me parece que han perdido un poco el encanto. Quizá he dejado de ser niño. En todo caso, algunos son muy entrañables, como La niña de los cerillos o La sirenita.

The Emperor’s New Clothes comes from a collection of classic fairy tales wrote over 150 years ago by the Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. Stories in this volume include favourites such as The Ugly Duckling: The Princess and the Pea and Thumbelina. All of these stories have survived the centuries and will undoubtedly endure for many more to come. Out of all of Anderson’s classic tales, one which has stayed with me from my childhood is The Emperor’s New Clothes.
The Emperor’s New Clothes is a story of pride and self-absorbed vanity. At the beginning of this story, we are introduced to an Emperor who cares for nothing but his appearance. The emperor meets a pair of scoundrels who promise to make for him his best attire yet; garments which will be visible to only those who are worth their place. Those who are not, the incompetent and stupid will not be able to see these magnificent garments. Inevitably a rush of hysteria follows in the wake of the ‘weaver’s’ proposal. The Emperor at first sends one of his most trusted subjects to view the garments, the most trusted subject is flabbergasted when he cannot see the clothes. Yet afraid to lose face, he praises the weavers for their wonderful creation and reports back to the Emperor and so on until everyone including the Emperor is so fearful of admittance that they cannot in fact see anything. It takes a young child, yet affected by snobbery to admit that what the whole kingdom is thinking.
The Emperor’s New Clothes is a favourite of mine and a story which is a relevant today as it was 150 years ago. It is a story which rejoices in the innocence of childhood.

I remember how upset I was as a child when I first had this story read to me (this is the original version where Ariel doesn't win the prince's heart and ends up dying in the end). I cried like a banshee baby. It took my mother a long time to calm me down as I didn't really like it at all and felt lied to when she said mermaids didn't have an eternal soul... but that I should feel good for her in the end because she is now in heaven.

Granted, it is just a story, but I still felt like she was robbed of her chance at love. I calmed down but I still hated the ending.

Hans Christian Anderson with a duh emphasis on the Christian. Years later, after forgetting the very ending, I've made peace with it... though who doesn't prefer the disney ending, right?

Ha sido un viaje mágico, lleno de muchas sorpresas y curiosidades: me llama la atención que en varios de los cuentos habla de la muerte, del sufrimiento y las consecuencias de ser malvado de manera más gráfica que actualmente, a los niños se les presentaba la realidad como es; con todos sus altibajos.

Lo otro que noté del autor es su cristiandad, en muchos de los cuentos es mencionado de una u otra forma, inclusive tiene un cuento completamente dedicado a Jesús.

Un autor bastante versátil que toca todo tipo de tema de una forma precisa y atrayente para todo público.

This... this made me re-think all fairytales from my childhood and how dark they probably REALLY were...
like "The Little Mermaid". That. That was a bit darker than I remembered. ._.
BUT!
I loved practically every story in here - especially with how dark some got - and my favorite, I think, was "Big Claus & Little Claus". :3

These versions, and this selection of stories, are particularly depressing.
The little mermaid is actually described as planning to slaughter the prince and princess with a big knife, which we get to see prominently on the illustration.
I can't read this to my child!

I've always enjoyed fairy tales and Hans Christian Andersen wrote some of the best. This volume includes such wonderful tales as The Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina, and The Little Mermaid. Stories that all children should read or be read to.

Algunos cuentos estan padres, más esos ya conocidos y sirve como para desmitificar hechos, pero en general tiende en ser repetitivo y hasta monótono, aunque él decía que sus cuentos no eran para niños, dan moralejas y son en la mayoría bastante inocentes.
