I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book because I am the friend of a friend of one of the authors.
What a delightful read! The storytelling arc in each short story is incredibly well done, weaving themes of curiosity, courage, and bravery amongst the backdrop of the sea and many different mythic creatures. From mermaids to leprechauns, sand people to undercover fish men, each myth is packed with a beautiful blend of fantasy and reality. The writing is superb and the stories, though written by different authors and unique in content, have a consistent whimsy and energy that connects them together.
This is absolutely a book I will buy and keep on my bookshelf for a couple of years until I can read it out loud to my girls.
Of Myths and Waves is a middle grade anthology full of characters that learn what it means to be brave. From mythical water horses, to sand people, and of course, mermaids, these stories, woven around myths, are so fun and imaginative! My personal favorite story has to be Hilo Washes Ashore on Hana, the story of a mermaid-like creature that washes ashore. Hilo’s in desperate need of water, and the people on the beach around him all have different opinions on what he might be. The ending was a twist that I didn’t see coming, but in hindsight, makes total sense and fits perfectly! The characters were relatable, although a few of the arcs felt rushed. I understand that these are short stories, I just wish that the lies the characters believed were shown rather than outright stated in a few of the stories. If you enjoy stories that take you under the sea and beyond your imagination, then this anthology is the collection of stories you’ve been waiting for!
Legends come alive within the pages Of Myths and Waves in which readers will find themselves ready to be brave, believe in what seems impossible, and make a difference for the better—even if it’s as simple as doing the right thing. Delightfully inspiring and entertaining!
