I didn’t expect If Books Could Kill by Kate Eberle to go the way it did at all.
It starts off like a familiar romance and I was fully in that mindset of “okay, I know where this is going.” That doesn’t last long at all. It shifts quite quickly into something much darker and more unsettling, and I kept having to adjust to what kind of story I was even reading.
Roxie is really easy to follow because she reacts like a normal person would—confused, in denial, and trying to act like everything is fine when it very clearly isn’t. At several points I was basically thinking she really needs to look around properly because things are not okay at all. Grant stood out as the only one making sense most of the time, which makes it even more frustrating (in a good way) when he’s ignored.
What stood out most is how it plays with romance expectations. It sets things up like you know exactly where it’s going and then quietly changes direction. I had a couple of moments where I genuinely had to pause because I didn’t expect the turn it took.
Kate Eberle’s writing style is fast-paced and very conversational, which makes it really easy to read and easy to get pulled into. It doesn’t overcomplicate anything, but that simplicity works in its favour because it makes the shift in tone feel even more effective.
The humour is subtle and comes from Roxie trying to treat everything like a normal romance story when it clearly stops being one quite early on. It’s those moments where you’re thinking “this is not normal anymore” while she’s still trying to convince herself it is.
Overall, I really enjoyed it. It starts off familiar and then becomes much more unpredictable and a bit chaotic, but in a way that keeps you interested throughout.

[arc review] I don’t know where to start this review, but I will say that ‘if books could kill’ is one of my favourite reads of 2026—and maybe of all time, too.
the story follows roxie as she’s down on her luck, suffering through the plights of modern day dating, and wishing she was a protagonist in her favourite romance novels.
what starts out as a joke with some purple glitter, eventually turns into something very real when her wish comes true. roxie is now the star of anna matthew’s upcoming novel—except anna isn’t writing a romance, she’s pivoting into thriller.
this was SO good and I throughly enjoyed reading it. it was a different spin on magical realism, and I found myself not wanting it to end.
the story is the perfect amount of silly and whimsy, an action packed plot, and a great side of romance! I loved the dynamic roxie and grant have, and I was pining for them from their first encounter.
there’s so many laugh out loud moments—one of my favourites being when they first meet, but I’m not going to spoil it for future readers!
the side characters were also fantastic, with their own story and individual personalities that added depth to the book.
‘if books could kill’ joins the few books that I can imagine as a great book to movie adaptation—and if that ever happens, I need tom blyth as grant.

If Books Could Kill follows Roxie who makes a wish to be the protagonist of her favorite romance author’s next book. Her wish ends up coming true, but unknown to her, that author ends up writing a crime thriller, thrusting Roxie right into the middle of it. With the help of a stranger Roxie meets after a chance encounter, the two will find themselves trying to survive until the end of the book.
This was such a unique story, and I loved every second of it. Roxie was such a funny character who was genuinely making me laugh out loud like every page. She was tough, ready to throw herself into danger, and had the best banter. I mean this was seriously the most fun I have had reading in a while. The story was action-packed; the romance was so cute and made me giggle (I love the two main characters so much) and the plot itself had me so engaged I could not stop reading. This was the perfect mix of suspense and romance, balanced and written so well that it straight up felt like a movie coming to life in my head.
If you are looking for a unique romance book full of action and the most fun/cute scenes, then definitely pick this book up. You will have an amazing time reading it! Thank you to NetGalley and Viking Penguin for the ARC.

This book is whimsical, funny and completely lighthearted. There were so many silly jokes throughout. It was fast paced and addictive. I read the whole thing in a day. There were so many of your typical romance tropes, it did fall into a bit of parody territory for me in some parts.

This book has it all comedy, romance, suspense, thrills. It will keep you wondering what is going to happen next. I found it easy to read and I was always wondering what is going to happen next with Roxie and Grant.

A book within a book done so perfectly. It’s funny and thrilling and ROMANTIC!!!
I loved that Roxie is the main character in every sense of the word - she’s the heavy in terms of fighting power - complete with a male sidekick. Such a fun reversal of thriller tropes.
I laughed out loud at many comments and loved how campy the story got because it was playing out multiple genre tropes.
A dizzying amount of fun! Highly recommended

I wanted to like \this so badly because the synopsis genuinely hooked me, and even though I am not usually a first person POV fan, I tried to overlook that since the concept sounded fun. Unfortunately, the execution just did not fully land for me. Roxie realizing that her wish came true and that she was inside her favorite author’s new book felt oddly underwhelming, especially for something that should have been a huge, mind blowing moment. The romance also did not work for me. Grant and Roxie’s relationship never felt believable because for most of the book Roxie shows little to no attraction to him, they barely communicate, and then suddenly she finds him attractive with no real buildup. Possible spoiler warning, but my biggest pet peeve was how easily everyone believed Roxie. She shows Grant the Giftster and he immediately accepts that she is living inside a book, and then when she finds Anna Matthews, Anna instantly believes her too. That lack of skepticism made the stakes feel low and took me out of the story. It was not a terrible book, and there were moments I enjoyed, but overall it felt like it dragged more than it needed to, and I finished it wishing the idea had been pushed further.

Eine Freundin von mir hat mir das Buch geschickt mit dem Vorschlag es gemeinsam zu lesen. Ich hatte es davor noch nie gesehen und war direkt dabei. Wir haben es beide absolut genossen.
Roxie liebt Liebesromane. Aber nicht die Liebe im echten Leben. Davor flüchtet sie lieber. Legt sich nicht fest. Will einfach nur kurze Bekanntschaften genießen und sich nur nicht binden. Schließlich könnte sie wieder ausgenutzt werden.
Und trotzdem wünscht sie sich tief im Inneren, irgendwie doch Teil einer Liebesgeschichte zu sein. Und zwar am liebsten im neuen Buch ihrer Lieblingsautorin.
Als dieser Wunsch für Roxie wahr wird, muss sie jedoch feststellen, dass ihre Lieblingsautorin sich einem neuen Genre zuwendet. Plötzlich geht es um Leben und Tod, denn Roxie ist Protagonistin eines Thrillers.
Dieses Buch ist voller Witz, Charme, Chaos und Liebenswürdigkeit. Es nimmt weder Thriller noch Liebesromane wirklich ernst, sondern nimmt all die stereotypischen Handlungsverläufe auf die Schippe.
Alles ist irgendwie chaotisch aber Roxie trägt die Geschichte gemeinsam mit Grant, den sie ausversehen entführt, komplett.
Die beiden funktionieren als Team wunderbar und kommen natürlich nicht ohne Klischees aus. Allerdings wissen sie ja auch genau wo sie sind: in einem Roman. Und das macht das ganze umso lustiger.
Gleichzeitig weiß man als Leserin des Buches wirklich nicht, wohin sich die Handlung noch wenden wird, denn es ist alles möglich. Von RomCom zu Thriller und Romance. Alles bekommt seinen Auftritt.
Die Handlung lebt absolut von der Komik und davon, dass Roxie so unüberlegt und übermotiviert ist.
Grant lag mir da eindeutig als Charakter etwas besser. Er ist klug, ruhig, ehrlich und in den richtigen Situationen ängstlich. Trotzdem überwindet er sich immer wieder, was in unfassbar sympathisch macht.
Für alle, die gerne lachen und Genre-Mix mögen: holt euch dieses Buch!

Roxie Mitchell lebt in Boston, hat keine nennenswerte Karriere, aber dafür Hobbies: Selbstverteidigungskurse, gefährliche Aktionen wie Bungeejumping, und Liebesromane, die sie in einer Art Buchclub mit ihrer besten Freundin Steph liest, am liebsten die von Anna Matthews. Leider hat Anna Matthews seit Jahren keinen neuen Roman mehr herausgebracht. Als Roxie sich wünscht, eine Heldin aus einem dieser Romane zu sein, geht dieser Wunsch seltsamerweise in Erfüllung - doch Moment mal, hat Anna das Genre gewechselt?! Statt einem romantischen Bookboyfriend trifft Roxie nämlich auf einen Serienkiller und in einen Strudel der Ereignisse...
Roxie ist eine Heldin nach meinem Geschmack - ehrlich, sehr, sehr lustig, schlagfertig und gleichzeitig reflektiv und loyal. Als sie auf der Flucht vor dem Bookboyfriend/Serienkeller Jack auf Grant trifft, wird es bald nicht nur spannend, sondern auch wirklich sehr Screwball-Komödien-mäßig lustig, denn Grant ist ein Nerd, ein Literaturdozent, der vor allem Angst hat und am liebsten zurück zu seinem Kater will, dann aber doch an Roxies Seite weiter im Plot geht und versucht, aus dem Roman herauszufinden, der ein Thriller ist - oder?!
Ich liebte die Figuren alle sehr, vor allem Grant ist ein Highlight und wie er mit Roxie interagiert. Die Geschichte hat eindeutig einen guten Spannungsbogen, der durch die doch durchaus romantischen Stellen ein bisschen abgemildert wird. Besonders gut gefallen haben mir die vielen Verweise auf Buch-Plots und Tropen, die sowohl in Thrillern als auch in Romantischen Komödien eine Rolle spielen und hier für alle Bookies wie mich mit einem Augenzwinkern nochmal thematisiert werden.
Und - Bücher über Bücher und Autoren sind einfach immer nach meinem Geschmack. Die Mischung Romantik und Thriller funktioniert hier sehr gut und ist damit ein Buch für alle, die wie ich nicht nur auf ein Genre festgelegt sind und sich gerne sehr gut unterhalten lassen wollen. Ich habe auf jeden Fall mehrmals sehr lachen müssen.

Honestly, that was just…a pretty damn good time.
I don’t really know what spurred me to request this, it’s pretty outside my typical genre, but I’m glad I did. Getting sucked into a book by your favorite author is a great plot idea and I loved that it was a murder-mystery-thriller (even though the stakes were nowhere to be seen). Roxie is a mess but also kind of a badass and I liked that she was the brave “muscle” and Grant was the anxious brain. What really surprised me though was how actually hilarious some of the writing was. Humor, especially in dialogue, is hard to land and I think it’s done mostly well here. Some of the writing made me cringe and Roxie’s no-filter-gag felt like a bit much at times. I wish Roxie had been written as a bit more mature. Also, the plot twists were predictable but that could just be a genre thing. I liked Grant, because I will always like a grumpy bookish MMC. The romance was sweet and surprisingly gut-wrenching at the end.
Overall, pleasantly surprised. I think cozy romance readers or anyone looking for a quick bit of dopamine could enjoy this.

3.75 ⭐️thank you NetGalley for letting me read this early and it hit so good! I was immediately hooked onto the story. Genuinely loved grant so much, there is not a single thing that man could do that I wouldn’t love. When I read the scene where they were in the library playing hide and seek I was genuinely scared. It was so good that jack was catching me off guard. He was my favourite killer? Is that weird to say idk. The others didn’t hit the same for me, but that wasn’t to say that it was written bad at all. I loved the scenes when we were talking to the gifter? The whole promise of her life being written as a book and trying to find out what was real and what was not was so good. I genuinely thought we were being set up for a second book instead of grant being real all along. I feel like I should’ve seen it coming and I did to a certain extent but reading it put it all into perspective. Safe to say this was such a good crime thriller mystery romance? And I could not forget how this book had me giggling. I would 100% recommend this to anyone who wants to read a different kind of romance!

Der Schreibstil war super flüssig und auch die Charaktere waren alle auf ihre eigene Art und Weise besonders. Die Dynamik zwischen Roxie und Grant hat mir auch ziemlich gut gefallen und ab und zu haben mich die Dialoge laut auflachen lassen.
Das Buch hat mir insgesamt sehr gut gefallen, auch wenn es an manchen Stellen ein wenig langsam voran ging.

I loved this book! It’s so much fun, such a cool concept, and I can’t believe it’s from a debut author. It’s the perfect blend of butt-kicking, over-the-top -ness, magical realism, and tropes galore. And some dialogue that had me literally lol. I’m very much looking forward to more from the author. Thanks to Penguin for the arc.

I absolutely loved this book!
It is the perfect mix of romance, suspense & mystery and is the funniest book I have read in a long time, I could not put it down!
So much happens in the story and every single character is so well written and developed. I love the main characters Roxie and Grant and their dynamic. There were so many moments I laughed out loud at their interactions.
The plot itself is so clever and well written, it was like I was watching a movie in my head whilst reading it.
It is such a unique book and I could not recommend it more, one of my favourite books of all time.

Als Roxie eines Tages scherzhaft den Wunsch äußert, selbst einmal die Heldin in einem ihrer Romane zu sein, rechnet sie natürlich nicht damit, dass dieser Wunsch tatsächlich in Erfüllung geht.
Plötzlich findet sie sich mitten in einer Geschichte wieder, die zunächst genau das verspricht, wovon sie immer geträumt hat. Charmante Begegnungen, romantische Spannung und das Gefühl, endlich die Hauptfigur ihres eigenen Happy Ends zu sein. Doch die Idylle hält nicht lange an. Schnell wird klar, dass Anna Matthews diesmal keinen Liebesroman geschrieben hat. Statt einer romantischen Komödie steckt Roxie auf einmal mitten in einem Thriller.
Völlig überfordert mit den Regeln eines Genres, das sie kaum kennt, versucht sie verzweifelt, einen Weg aus der Geschichte zu finden. Unterstützung erhält sie von Grant, einem eher zurückhaltenden Literaturprofessor mit einer Vorliebe für Krimis. Gemeinsam geraten die beiden von einer brenzligen Situation in die nächste und müssen herausfinden, wie diese Geschichte endet, bevor sie selbst darin untergehen.
„If Books Could Kill“ ist das Debüt von Kate Eberle und dafür wurde ordentliche die Werbetrommel gerührt. Die Prämisse klingt aber auch einfach unglaublich verlockend. Eine Romance Leserin landet plötzlich selbst in einer Geschichte und stellt dann fest, dass sie diesmal nicht in einer RomCom, sondern in einem Thriller gelandet ist. Allein mit dieser Idee hatte mich das Buch sofort.
Gerade weil ich selbst überwiegend Thriller lese, gleichzeitig aber auch eine große Schwäche für klassische romantische Filmkomödien habe, war diese Kombination genau mein Beuteschema. Außerdem musste ich beim Lesen immer wieder an „A Killer Crush“ von Shailee Thompson denken, das mich Anfang des Jahres komplett begeistert hat und ebenfalls mit der Mischung aus Romance und Thriller gespielt hat. Entsprechend hoch waren meine Erwartungen.
Und was war das bitte für ein cooler Einstieg in die Story! Die Grundidee ist originell und macht sofort Spaß. Wir haben einen herrlich absurden Ausgangspunkt, der erstaunlich gut funktioniert. Auch Roxie selbst mochte ich direkt. Sie wirkt sympathisch, humorvoll und bringt viel Leben in die Geschichte. Generell die Dialoge im Buch haben mir richtig gut gefallen. Die Sprache ist witzig, locker und sorgt für eine angenehm leichte Atmosphäre. Der Humor war für mich wirklich eine der größten Stärken des Romans.
Leider konnte das Buch diesen starken Einstieg nicht halten. Die Handlung hat zunehmend an Klarheit verloren und ich hatte immer wieder das Gefühl, dass der Geschichte ein wenig der rote Faden fehlt. Vieles wirkte auf mich sprunghaft und manche Sachen tauchten gefühlt plötzlich auf, ohne dass sie sich wirklich aus der Handlung ergeben hätten. Die Reise, auf die sich Roxie begibt, um ihr Problem zu lösen, fühlte sich fast schon zusammengewürfelt an. Einzelne Elemente wirkten nicht immer vollständig ausgearbeitet, wodurch es mir schwerfiel, am Ball zu bleiben.
Natürlich wollen wir auch nicht die Romantik vergessen und dafür gab es im Buch ein klassisches Love Interest. Leider konnte diese aufflammende Liebe nicht überzeugen, denn ich habe die Chemie zwischen den beiden einfach nicht gespürt. Fühlte sich eher wie ein Mittel zum Zweck an. Das Ende konnte dann noch ein wenig rausreißen, obwohl die Auflösung nicht völlig überraschend war.
Es ist ein Debüt mit einer wirklich großartigen Grundidee, mit dem Kreativität und ein gutes Gespür für Humor gezeigt wurde. Gleichzeitig merkt man dem Roman einfach an einigen Stellen an, dass es sich eben um ein Erstlingswerk handelt. Manche Handlungsstränge wirken nicht ganz ausgereift und hätten etwas mehr Feinschliff vertragen können. Trotzdem würde ich mir weitere Bücher der Autorin anschauen. Titel und Cover machten mich auf „If Books Could Kill“ von Kate Eberle aufmerksam und die Leseprobe weckte schließlich mein Interesse, das Buch lesen zu wollen. Mir gefiel der Humor und die Schlagfertigkeit der Protagonistin Roxie Mitchell und ich war gespannt, auf welche Weise sie wohl in das Buch entführt werden würde.
Roxies große Klappe und zu reden, ohne groß nachzudenken, verhalf ihr zu genau dem, woran sie nie ernsthaft dachte: Einer Hauptrolle im Roman ihrer Lieblingsautorin Anna Matthews, die normalerweise ziemlich schnulzige Liebesromane schreibt. Wie es der Klappentext jedoch bereits verrät, sollte der lang ersehnte neue Roman jedoch ein Thriller werden. Allgemein kann ich sagen, dass dieser ziemlich genau das beschreibt, was man in dem Buch erwarten darf und spätestens beim letzten Satz davon sollte klar sein: Ein romantischer Thriller, der sich nicht ganz ernst nimmt.
Zwischendurch mag ich so leichte Kost und bei den lockeren Sprüchen hatte ich den Eindruck, dass ich bei dem recht flüssig zu lesenden Schreibstil sehr schnell voran kommen würde. Roxy war mir sympathisch und man lernte ihr Wesen recht schnell kennen. Eigentlich eine Frohnatur, die Liebesromane beim Lesen zwar regelrecht inhaliert, im realen Leben die Liebe jedoch meidet wie der Teufel das Weihwasser. Der Grund, den man mit der Zeit erfuhr, war nicht überraschend und passte zur Geschichte.
Im Gegensatz zu Roxy ahnte man recht bald, wann es mit dem Roman im Roman losging. Und so lose wie auch ihre Klappe war, so ging es Schlag auf Schlag abenteuerlich zu. Man könnte teilweise meinen, dass sie kaum Luft zum Atmen bekam. Und so kam ich mir auch beim Lesen vor. Turbulent und hektisch schienen mir manche Passagen zu sein, ohne mal ein wenig mehr in die Tiefe zu gehen und mit der Zeit wurde mir Roxys permanente Schlagfertigkeit ein wenig zu viel. Sicherlich gab es auch ein paar ruhigere und gefühlvollere Momente, die einem die einzelnen Charaktere hätten ein wenig näher bringen können. Dies ging jedoch im Gesamten ziemlich unter. So konnte ich mit der Geschichte letztendlich nicht wirklich warm werden, weshalb ich doch etwas länger zum Lesen brauchte, als ich zuerst dachte.
Alles in allem erfüllte das Buch meine Erwartungen leider nicht, denn es ging ein wenig zu chaotisch zu. Es fühlte sich gehetzt an und zu den Charakteren bekam ich einfach keinen Bezug. Potential hatte die Idee zur Geschichte auf jeden Fall und in gewisser Weise hatte ich durchaus meinen Spaß beim Lesen. Die Umsetzung schien mir allerdings nicht übermäßig ausgereift zu sein, was ich sehr schade fand.

Aus einer Laune heraus wünscht sich Roxie, dass sie in deren nächstem Buch die Heldin sein möchte. Dummerweise erfüllt sich ihr Wunsch tatsächlich, doch diesmal will die Autorin ein neues Genre testen, und zwar einen Thriller. Also zückt Roxies traumhafter Book-Boyfriend plötzlich ein Schlachtermesser und die blutige Jagd beginnt. Roxie will unbedingt aus der Handlung aussteigen, aber das scheint unmöglich. Die zufällige Entführung des schüchternen College-Professors Grant könnte aber die Lösung sein, denn er ist Krimifan und kennt vielleicht die richtigen Überlebenstechniken. Zudem entpuppt er sich nach und nach als ernsthafter Love-Interest und möglicherweise dreht sich das Buch doch in Richtung Romance.

Messer im Herz statt Herzklopfen gehörte zumindest nicht zu ihren Zielen, aber Roxie ist tough und weiß sich zu wehren. Ganz im Gegensatz zu Grant, der völlig unfreiwillig in ihrem Thriller-Szenario landet. Trotzdem spürt man von Anfang an diese Chemie zwischen den beiden, die im Laufe der Handlung immer stärker wird.
Ich liebe die Dynamik der beiden und ihre skurrilen und witzigen Interaktionen, wenn sie auf Mörderjagd gehen und einen Ausweg aus der Romanhandlung suchen. Roxies Abwehrhaltung ist stellenweise ein wenig nervig und nicht ganz nachvollziehbar, aber wenn sie sich endlich auf das Ganze einlässt, wird es auch ziemlich romantisch.
Ich hatte viel Spaß beim Lesen, was neben Roxie und Grant auch an den großartigen Nebenfiguren liegt. Tolle Idee und unterhaltsame Umsetzung!

Ich liebe die Dynamik der beiden und ihre skurrilen und witzigen Interaktionen, wenn sie auf Mörderjagd gehen und einen Ausweg aus der Romanhandlung suchen. Roxies Abwehrhaltung ist stellenweise ein wenig nervig und nicht ganz nachvollziehbar, aber wenn sie sich endlich auf das Ganze einlässt, wird es auch ziemlich romantisch.
Ich hatte viel Spaß beim Lesen, was neben Roxie und Grant auch an den großartigen Nebenfiguren liegt. Tolle Idee und unterhaltsame Umsetzung!

What a ride! This was such an incredible read and I throughly enjoyed myself from start to finish. The story especially picked up during the last 20% with insane plot twists that completely caught me off guard. I found myself racing through the pages and not wanting the story to end!
Going into this, I genuinely had no idea what to expect, but I can confidently say that I wasn’t disappointed. If Books Could Kill is a brilliant blend of rom-com, action-packed thriller and magical realism that manages to balance all three perfectly.
One of my favourite aspects was the meta commentary on classic romance and crime thriller tropes. It felt like a fun nod to the lovers of both genres. I mean… only one bed, forced proximity and a little bit of spice? I don’t know about you, but that sounds very familiar to me 🤭👀
The humour was absolutely spot on. There were so moments that had me laughing out loud, especially Roxie’s inner monologues 🤣 She was such a fun and relatable protagonist to follow. I also loved the dynamic between her and Grant - I was literally rooting for them from the moment they first met. Their chemistry, combined with the mystery, suspense and humour made for such an entertaining and unique reading experience.
Overall, this was a fantastic debut novel. I can easily picture this being adapted into a movie and if that ever happens, I’ll be first in line to watch it 🙂↔️

„If Books Could Kill“ von Kate Eberlen ist ein wunderbarer Roman, der mich von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite gefesselt hat. Die Geschichte verbindet auf einzigartige Weise Humor, Emotionen und Spannung und zeigt, wie Bücher Menschen miteinander verbinden können.
Besonders beeindruckt haben mich die lebendigen Charaktere, die mit ihren Stärken, Schwächen und Träumen sehr authentisch wirken. Kate Eberlen versteht es hervorragend, zwischen berührenden Momenten und überraschenden Wendungen zu wechseln, sodass keine Seite langweilig wird. Die Dialoge sind klug und unterhaltsam, während die Atmosphäre eine besondere Liebe zu Büchern und Geschichten ausstrahlt.
Der Schreibstil ist flüssig, warmherzig und voller feiner Beobachtungen. Man fühlt mit den Figuren mit, lacht mit ihnen und fiebert bis zum Ende mit. Gleichzeitig regt das Buch dazu an, über Schicksal, Zufälle und die Kraft von Geschichten nachzudenken.

3.75 stars! This was a really cute read! One of those where I could automatically see this being adapted into a Netflix movie. And there were a lot of moments I laughed out loud. However the ability to create a solid romance, comedy, and thriller is a *very* difficult thing to balance. Unfortunately the romance suffered for me where I was almost convinced the male hero was someone else until 50% into the book. Regardless, I’d recommend this for fans of Ally Carter or magical realism!

This is a really refreshing spin on a romance novel, blending it with a thriller for a light-hearted fast-paced charge through tropes and intrigue. I adored the concept of the character’s starring in an actively being written story though I was hoping to see this mechanic be used a little more with time loops or a deeper lean into the tropes involved. The main characters of Roxie and Grant were so engaging, I was hooked from the introductions and they interacted so well.
While the overall plot worked well, the pacing grew a little stunted towards the two thirds mark with a repeated setup growing stale towards the end. The final reveal scene motivation felt weak and the ending explanation wasn’t enough to make up for it in the moment.
I’m impressed this is a debut and excited to see what the author posts in the future. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC!

Romance meets thriller done PERFECTLY. Clever, chaotic and unbelievably addictive, this is genuinely one of the most unique books I have ever read.
Following Roxie, a romance reader who suddenly finds herself thrown into a reality completely out of her depth, was SO much fun. She is witty, stubborn, impulsive and completely lovable from start to finish.
And Grant?! Honestly one of my favourite MMCs in a long time. Awkward, anxious, clever and unexpectedly hilarious. Watching him slowly come out of his shell throughout the story was one of the highlights of the book for me.
Every mission, every task and every “oh sh*t” moment had me completely hooked. The pacing was brilliant and made the entire adventure feel realistic rather than rushed, which made the journey even more immersive.
I loved this so so much! Highly recommend

Overall I think this just wasn’t for me because I need to really like the characters to like a book, and I just didn’t care for Roxie. Grant was fine, but I didn’t feel chemistry between them so I did buy into the romance.
There were lines that came off as more silly than funny to me, and unfortunately they read as immature instead of fun-silly. This seemed to hit a lull for while, but I did like the way that that the story wrapped up!

Thank you NetGalley and Kate Eberle for trusting me to be an ARC for this debut novel. I struggled with this at first but the further I got into it, the more fun I had reading it. I throughly enjoyed the ride that this novel offers. I was intrigued based on the synopsis how this would turn into a romance mystery book and it did not disappoint. The mystery build up, the expected but also unexpected romance, the two twists at the end.. The twist at the very end was placed so beautifully and I audibly gasped out loud. Be sure to check this out when it hits the market!!

This book is hilarious 🤣 I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time while reading a book. This book also has so much heart, the chemistry between Roxie & Grant is beautiful.
Roxie makes a wish, to be in a romance novel of one of her favorite authors. This is a wish made while talking to her best friend, on the phone, in the middle of a sidewalk. Who hadn’t said “I wish for …” while in a casual conversation?
What happens next is a series of unfortunate events, filled with chaos, confusion, and murder?
In order to escape a homicidal date, Roxi must commit some felonies. All manner of chaos ensues.
This book has twists and turns, a romantic interest that might not be real. It’s a book within a book within reality??? I enjoyed it so much and I think it might be the most popular book of 2026.
