Thrilling and heart-shattering, A Fate of Smoke and Betrayal is the third book in The Fated series, an epic romantasy filled with dragons, Fae magic, fated mates, and a slow-burn romance where soul bonds burn brighter than fire, and love becomes the most dangerous kind of magic.
A warrior born of death . . . Finley has never feared dying. What terrifies her is living. Sold off at thirteen for her death magic, she’s been used as a weapon and a warning. But when dragons in the realm of Vistos begin to fall prey to a shadowed force that drains their magic and life, Finley is called upon to wield a magic she never knew she held. One she doesn’t trust. A magic that whispers of healing when all she’s ever known is destruction.
A dragon rider bound by love he doesn’t believe he deserves . . . Brenton has spent years denying the bond that ties him to Finley, convinced that her happiness lies with her intended . . . not with her soul-bound mate. But when they come together for a mission and dark forces spread through the realm, the line between honor and what the fates intended begins to blur. A choice between power and love . . .
As allies rally and enemies move unseen, Finley and Brenton must confront the truth of what they are . . . and what was meant to be. Because to save the dragons, they’ll have to be brave enough to fight for the one thing they have always been afraid to choose—each other.
While I wasn’t born with a pen or book in my hand, it feels as if I’ve loved to write and read since forever. Now that I live in Texas, my favorite place to do either is in front of my fireplace. When I’m not reading or writing, you can find me hiking or exploring small towns with my husband and kids.
I love anything romance. Seriously, give me all the kissing books. But there’s something magical about diving deep into my imagination where dragons and fae exist. So, I guess you can say I’m in my romantasy era
What a bittersweet ending to this series. This finale delivered everything I wanted: dragons, magic, political tension, hidden realms, emotional damage, found family, and twists that kept my attention the whole time.
Brenton has had my heart from the very beginning, but this book somehow made me love him even more. And surprisingly… Finley completely won me over too. Getting her POV changed everything, understanding her pain, her choices, and the walls she built around herself.
The slow burn between Brenton and Finley was absolutely worth the wait. Their relationship felt raw and emotional, and I loved watching their bond grow stronger little by little.
And of course the found family in this is amazing. I loved the beginning with the slumber party and the spa day at the end.
Overall, this was such a strong finale filled with heartbreak, healing, romance, sacrifice, humor, and adventure.

“But gods, if she asked it of me, I'd strip myself bare with only my tattered heart for her to see.”
“You are the wildfires that live within me, the flames I run toward. Impossible to put out. You don't simply undo me but consume me."
“I cannot breathe in a world where I don't get to be with you. I've lived that life, I've suffocated in that life."
“He wanted what each of us did. For a soul that would reach back for them even in the dark.”
“Home wasn't a realm. It was her. My soul-bound mate. My everything. She hadn't carved her way into my heart; she had always been its truth.”
4.75⭐️ At this point, Y. Maria is one of my fav author. If she writes it, I'll read it. No questions asked. No need to know what the book's about.
However, I have been craving for Brenton's story since book 1, A Fate Of Ice and Lies. He has been such a strong character and his bond with Finley was such an angsty story. I did not like Finley in the first two books, definitely. But if you read this book, you'll understand why she did what she did. And how much she suffered too.
This book, however, feels so much more than just their romance. Brent accepting and making space for people that mattered to Finley shows just the type of man he is.
The fact that the book' starting shows Teddy and Brent's bond feels perfect. So so perfect. I've always said it and I'll definitely say it again, but Y. Maria truly writes the BEST Found Family books.
Seeing more of Alastor and Eiran (my forever bf🤭) is always a treat. But the turn it took? OH MY GOD. Why would you do that, Maria?
From the start to the end, this book was absolutely perfect and definitely feels like a Fated series book.
Sharing some of the quotes because they made me cry and I love trauma bonding:
"I’d rather my heart break an infinite number of times than shield love and leave my heart empty. You’re hurt and tired. I understand that. Having someone you love walk away from you is a pain akin to death. Learning to breathe and function without them is an ongoing pain I don’t wish upon anyone. Sometimes I think the heart wasn’t built to be broken. If you were to cut my skin, I’d bleed but eventually heal. A wound to the heart?” I placed my fisted hand against my chest, where my heart echoed with the years of pain it’d endured thus far. “It can last a lifetime. This isn’t the end of your story, though. Feel the pain, acknowledge it, and then rise again and again until rising isn’t as exhausting because the broken can still live and enjoy life. Delaney’s part in your story may be over, but you still have so many chapters left unwritten. You’re going to find the forever kind of love.” I gave him a faint smile, one that carried more truth than comfort. “The pain may never vanish completely, but it’ll make the joy sharper when it comes. And it will come.”
“If being monstrous is the price for your joy, then wear it like a crown.”
“If I am who you choose, then I will match your darkness, unflinching and unwavering.”
"Whenever you’re in my arms, you feel like forever."
"We all deserve someone who shows up for us."
“How do you make loving me sound so simple?” “I was made to love you, Finley. This isn’t fate’s design or some divine hand guiding me. It’s a truth carved in my bones, burned into every breath I take. I was put on this earth for one person, and gods help anyone who tries to keep me from you. I was made to love you.”
Firstly thank you to both Y. Maria and Crowns and Chaos PR for choosing me to read this book and share a spoiler free review.
I couldn’t put this down so addicting. The magic the bonds the found family the love the yearning the plot twists the humour the dragons!? This story had it all and I was so for it.
Brenton is my new favorite book boyfriend his yearning and declarations for Finley too many annotations to count. Swooning blushing kicking my feet giggling the works
Finley was so relatable because she wanted to be strong and independent but also deep down wanting to be held and protected too. Her love for lollipops was so cute and funny to me her sass is the best always so witty.
The storyline and build up to the climax and conclusion was writing so well I was intrigued touched nervous all the feels in this story and did not want it to end. I recommend it to anyone who loves a fantasy with dragons magic yearning second chances one tent 😉 fated mates, found family, strong FMC, lovesick MMC can you tell I love this book!?
This whole series is great with this book being my favorite.
This is the last in the Fated Series and filled with a lot. From warriors to dragons. Faes and Mages. Humans too. Family from all realms.
Very well written and easy to follow. Told between Brenton and Finley’s povs. You’ll get to know them well.
There is a huge shock in the last several chapters that will leave you reeling. It fit perfectly though. There are actually a couple of things that come to light.
I loved this series and hope one day there will be another. Maybe Alastor’s story….
This book was everything I wanted from the finale of this trilogy. Y. María truly delivered an ending that felt emotional, satisfying, and worthy of these characters I’ve grown so attached to over the course of the series.
One thing that surprised me the most was becoming a Finley fan. Liking Finley was absolutely not on my bingo card this year after book two, but here we are! Seeing her struggle to understand and control her magic added so much depth to her character and completely changed the way I viewed her. Her vulnerability around Brenton made her feel so real, and I loved watching her walls slowly come down whenever he was near.
And speaking of Brenton… the slow burn between them was SO worth it. The way their bond keeps growing stronger the more time they spend together had me completely invested. Their relationship felt natural, emotional, and deeply romantic without ever losing the tension that made me want to keep turning the pages. I found myself rooting for them every step of the way.
This installment, much like the second book, is heavily character-driven, and honestly, that’s one of my favorite things about this series. The plot moves along at such a good pace while still giving the characters room to breathe, grow, and connect. And as always, the found family dynamic absolutely shines. Those relationships continue to be one of the strongest and most heartfelt parts of the trilogy.
I had the honor of being both a BETA and ARC reader for this book, and it’s been such a privilege watching this story come to life. This series holds such a special place in my heart, and while I truly didn’t want it to end, I couldn’t have asked for a more satisfying conclusion.
—————————
OMG such a bittersweet ending to a series that has loved rent free in my head since last year!!! 🥹😭🤌🏻❤️ I’ve been obsessed with Brenton the whole time, but this book showed so many sides to Brenton and made me love him more!! I totally see why he understands and loves Finley after this book. Having Finley’s POV changed my entire opinion on her! The background context about her really makes a difference in retrospect when you go back to past moments that looked like she was a heartless bitch to Brenton.
I love how the book started out with Brenton and the gang having movie nights and poor Brenton being afraid of clowns had me cracking up!!! 😂😂 When the watched IT and he was terrified I truly felt for him lol watching that is a right of passage and we’re all terrified of how creepy it is!
This book was so intricate with the plot line! All the little details came together so well at the end, but I did have a few lingering questions that I wish could be answered!!
Having a handful of people go through the tear to a different realm they didn’t know existed was a nice adventure to experience!! It’s amazing how neither realm knew about the other even though they both have dragons! Those dragons are sneaky with their secrets… 😮💨
All in all this was a great wrap up to the unanswered questions and issues that arose in books 1 and 2!! I love that we learned the full history of Brenton and Finley, Finley and Etienne, and some more about the gods, Alastor, and Victoria! It was great seeing so much comfortability and humor with Alastor 😂🥹 he deserves a family so much!!
Brenton got his love story—which his hopeless romantic heart fully deserved!!! It had some bumps and trials, but if you can stick through the hardships, then this book is so worth the journey when it comes to this series.
Finley and Brenton combining their powers was such a cool part of this book!! We saw some binding magic with Teddy and Alastor previously, and even Teddy and Elias when they still had magic, and yet this was totally different since Finley’s powers were tied to her bond with Brenton. So original and unique!
I love love love this series and highly recommend it to all my romantasy lovers out there! 🥰🤌🏻👏🏻
A Fate of Smoke and Betrayal was everything I wanted from the conclusion to this series and easily my favorite book of the trilogy.
Following Finley and Brenton once again, this book takes everything that made the previous books enjoyable and raises the emotional stakes even higher. The action, romance, dragons, magic, and character growth all come together in a way that made it difficult to put down.
One of my favorite parts of the series has always been Finley, and that didn’t change here. She is strong, capable, and fiercely independent, but she also carries vulnerabilities that make her feel incredibly relatable. I loved seeing a heroine who can fight her own battles while still wanting comfort, support, and someone willing to stand beside her when things become overwhelming.
And then there’s Brenton.
He was such a wonderful book boyfriend throughout this story. Protective without being overbearing, loyal, patient, and willing to put the people he loves first, he consistently proved why he was one of my favorite characters in the series. Watching his relationship with Finley continue to develop was one of the highlights of the book.
The fantasy elements remained engaging from beginning to end. The dragons, magic system, political conflicts, and looming threats all blended together seamlessly while continuing to push both the plot and the characters forward. Every challenge felt meaningful, and every victory felt earned.
What stood out most to me, though, was how emotionally satisfying this book felt. It provided the payoff I had been hoping for while still delivering plenty of tension, action, and heartfelt moments along the way.
As a finale, this book gave me everything I wanted. It honored the journey these characters have been on while delivering a conclusion that felt worthy of the series.
If you’ve enjoyed the previous books, I highly recommend continuing with this one.
If you are a Romantasy Lover who loves Fae, Dragon Riders, Second Chance Romance, Secrets and Betrayals then just go do the dang thing and pick up this series!!! Easily one of my favorite reads of the year thus far. The Author must be magical because they put something into this book to make me feel every possible emotion known to man.
This story!! I already knew I was going to love the MMC because he was one of my favorite side characters from the first two books but boy did he come to shine and took the mantel of my favorite character in the series (sorry Elias, I still love you!). Brenton is such a phenomenal mix of sweet teddy bear but also the fiercest of protectors when it comes to those he loves. Who doesn't love a man that would do anything in their power to protect you (even at their own cost) plus has a major soft side???
This book had me staying up til 12:30pm at the end because I had to finish it that night because I needed to know how this story would come to a close. The tension, the yearning, the twists, the love story, the battles, the EVERYTHING just had me in a death grip to keep on turning the pages!!!!
I don't want to give away but these character's story stole my heart, the plot twists hit at every turn, the plot was thick and juicy, and the banter was sublime. I caught myself going from laughing out loud to crying major tears alongside these characters with a change of a single chapter.
A few notes I had as I read in case you were interested how I my emotions were going throughout:
No!!! Now they have a misunderstanding between them because of this.
why is Y.Maria making me cry so much tonight!
I literally laughed out loud at this!
Ahh!!! I knew it! Well I didn't know it know it, but I highly thought it!
I wasn't expecting this right now!!
And it just keeps getting better!
Okay firstly, WHAT IS COMING???
I thought I was going to have to be pissed there for a moment!
Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Fae warriors Finley and Brenton are soul-bound mates, but they have never recognized their bond. Finley has always stayed loyal to her betrothed, and Brenton accepts that, even though it pains him. When the dragons in another realm begin to fall ill, Finley's unique magic is a potential solution. A small group travels to Vistos to investigate, and Finley and Brenton are forced to confront feelings they've kept suppressed for years. As they try to weave through the past hurts and lies, it becomes clear that the broken magic in Vistos is also appearing in their homeworld. The only way to save both realms is for Finley to discover her true power, and for both she and Brenton to open their hearts to each other. But is their bond strong enough to survive what's coming for them?
Oh my goodness, what an epic conclusion to The Fated Series! If fated mates is your trope, then these books are for you. You must read A Fate of Ice and Lies and A Fate of Blood and Magic before this book. I was so happy to finally get Brenton's story, after watching him pining after Finley for two books. He is the ultimate green flag, golden retriever MMC. I loved seeing characters from the first two books and finally realizing how everyone was connected. Plus, we get to travel to a whole new realm, with dragons everywhere! There were so many swoon-worthy and spicy moments; the romance in this book is top-notch! I am sad this series is over, because I so enjoyed it! A must-read for any romantasy fan.
The bittersweet moment we all dread has finally arrived.
𝑨 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒎𝒐𝒌𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒍 is the third and final installment in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔, and let me tell you, I tried my absolute best to slow down and savor every single page. Knowing this was the end made it so hard to turn the final leaf, because these characters have truly become like a family to me. I am so incredibly grateful I discovered this world!
I honestly lost count of how many times this book made me cry. The plot was nothing short of amazing, and the unexpected twists left me completely speechless. If you had unanswered questions from the previous books, prepare to finally get your closure—Y. Maria ties everything together beautifully.
Can we talk about Brenton and Finley for a second? Their chemistry was so touching and deeply interesting. They are the absolute definition of made for each other, and I enjoyed every single second of their sweetness and unwavering loyalty.
But they weren't the only ones who stole my heart. The character development for Alastor and Javier reached an absolute peak in this book. Watching their growth was easily one of the highlights of the finale.
Y. Maria’s writing style remains as beautiful, immersive, and easy to read as ever. (Adulting and work responsibilities really tried to hinder my reading time, so it took me five days to finish, but it was worth every second!)
Overall, I am completely in love with this series. It has earned a permanent spot on my favorites shelf, and I will always, always recommend it.
While I adored the couple of the first two books, I loved the pairing in this book even more and their story across the series so far!
You pickup after Teddy and her crew have ended the battles of the previous books and the realms are at relative peace. But when the dragons summon their riders and the FMC Finley to their realm to help save them from an unknown sickness, she must now face her mate bond with the MMC dragon rider Brenton head on, after avoiding them in their realm and focusing on taking care of her unwell betrothed. Once they arrive, they want her to train her magic to help heal the sick dragons and discover what could be causing the harm, and turns out it’s another following the same path to harness the orbs power and sucking up her magic to harm those around her, making her even more afraid of the death magic that has plagued her.
I loved this pair of characters and their dual POV throughout this book, and how supportive Brenton is and only just wanting Finley to be happy, even if it’s not with him. I also enjoyed getting an expanded world in this book with new characters but also getting to see how all the characters from the previous books are doing. There was plenty of chaos, shocking reveals and tension between them, and some cool dragon riding that all kept me sucked into this book! There’s not a cliffhanger but enough left open that I’m hoping for more books soon in this world! My rating 4.6/5!
Thanks to the author for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!
✨ TOUCH HER AND DIE ✨ FOUND FAMILY ✨ DRAGON RIDERS ✨ FATED MATES ✨ ONE TENT ✨ SECOND CHANCE ✨ SECRETS AND BETRAYAL
I'm not crying ...
OMG it's so bittersweet to be finishing off this incredible trilogy that has lived in my heart and my head since book one. The book that turned this thriller girl into a romantasy reader who fell in love with dragons and their riders. ❤︎ And now Maria has given these wonderful characters a heartfelt and emotional send off.
In this book we see an amazing character arc for our badass girl Finley, and it's everything I could have wanted and more. I really disliked her character from the beginning, and was definitely holding a grudge. But this book has shown another side of the story, how she has suffered and the reason for the walls she has put up around her.
Brenton having his own story arc was fantastic! I didn't want it to end, but I loved how everything wrapped up. The found family dynamic was strong, and love was at the center of it all.
I love how Maria writes, and her world-building shines throughout all of her books. It's atmospheric, but never overshadows her characters, who are impeccably distinct, especially the Dragons.
A Fate of Smoke and Betrayal is a captivating tale of yearning, devotion, magic, soul bonding, and a thrilling battle to save the dragons – a story you won't soon forget along with some surprising revelations.
This finale was everything I hoped for and somehow even more. A Fate of Smoke and Betrayal delivers a breathtaking blend of emotion, magic, and character growth that felt like the perfect send‑off for this world. Finley’s arc absolutely floored me. Watching her confront her past, her power, and her own sense of worth made her one of the most compelling heroines I’ve read this year. I went from side‑eyeing her in book two to fiercely rooting for her in every chapter.
And Brenton… this man. His loyalty, his softness, his strength, he shines brighter than ever in this book. The way he loves, protects, and gives Finley space to choose her own path made their bond feel so intimate and earned. Their connection isn’t just romantic; it’s soul‑deep, patient, and powerful in a way that lingers long after the last page.
The world expands beautifully, the dragons are unforgettable, and the found family moments hit with the perfect mix of humor and heart. The twists landed, the stakes felt real, and the emotional payoff was everything a romantasy lover could want. This book didn’t just wrap up a trilogy, it carved out a permanent place in my heart.
A stunning, magical, deeply satisfying conclusion.
When you finally have a chance to be with your mate, will you take it or deny the love of a lifetime and beyond?
A Fate of Smoke and Betrayal is the final book in The Fated Series and gives you an ending of unexpected and intriguing twists.
Brenton has distanced himself from his soul-bound mate, Finley, after she chose another. Regardless, he would be her everything and finally has a chance to prove to her that they deserve a life loving each other.
In this final story, Brenton and Finley face obstacles both internal and external that will leave you reeling with all the emotions. Their battle for love is hard fought, and their battle to keep lives safe is even harder.
Through the help of their found family, old and new, they must find a way to protect more than one realm while trying to find their way to each other. All of your favorites from the series are here to help, and you get to see more of some characters than you have previously. The unexpected twists and turns will keep you glued to the story and rooting for Brenton and Finley’s survival.
Come along as Brenton, Finley, and their family of love and blood help them follow their fate through smoke and betrayal.
A Fate of Smoke and Betrayal was such a great way to wrap up the series I’ve been waiting for Brenton and Finley’s story, and it completely lived up to the hype. It has the perfect mix of emotional growth and awesome dragon action.
Finley starts off so traumatized from her death magic, but watching her learn to heal and accept herself was beautiful. Brenton was my favorite side character. I loved getting his POV.
The tension in this book is good. When they finally give in, the spice is definitely a solid 3/5. It’s passionate, super romantic, and it doesn't just feel thrown in. I love this group of characters so much, and their loyalty to each other is the heart of the book.
If you love fantasy romance, dragons, and emotional healing journeys, you definitely need to read this series.
What an amazing conclusion to this story! This books brings you on a wild adventure with even more secrets and even more dragons.
I loved the character arc for Finley. I really wanted to continue to dislike her so badly but ended up adoring her. Brenton is one of my fav side characters so it was so nice to see him take the spotlight. His journey has ups and downs and it was nice to see things from his pov.
I loved how the over arching plot from the other books still played out and finished off the series so nicely. Y Maria has such a beautiful way of world building without bogging you down with info. I love that all her characters shine as individuals, even the side ones, and noone ever feels flat or left out.
This series is very underrated! I have loved it from the very first page of the first book and this third book did not disappoint! This book focuses on Brenton and Finley and I loved that we got to see Finley's POV. We got to understand her so much better, knowing more about her background. And I love that this book focused on Brenton, I have been hoping for it since the first book! This book answered a lot of unanswered questions and wrapped up issues from the first two books. I can hardly believe this is the last book! I have loved every page of this trilogy! Thank you so much @ymariawrites for this book and the entire trilogy for the most amazing series and @crownsandchaos_pr for the eARC.
What a great ending to a wonderful series! I absolutely love how this book tied everything together and still focused on the larger overarching plot while putting two new characters in the spotlight. I loved Finley’s arc and how she redeemed herself. Brenton was already a favorite of mine and this made me love him even more. Y. Maria does found family like no other and this book continues that trope. It just makes you feel more connected to the book knowing how the characters all found each other. The world building was fantastic and not too overwhelming. You get all the necessary details. Thank you again to the author for this ARC!
I loved this series so much, and Brenton & Finley's book is no exception. The yearning, the personal growth, the trust??? Had me so locked in. Also love that we got a new realm! Forever grateful to the author for letting the dragons talk - they are incredible characters and add so much. I love that the characters are flawed, and they make mistakes that are addressed with growth every time, even if it takes a minute. The found family had me hooked, so I devoured this book. So sad to see this end, Ihad loved every second in this world with these lovely people, and I'll be back for whatever Y. Maria does next.
Thank you so much to the author and Crowns and Chaos PR for my free review copy!
Hello, people! First of all, let me mention that this book is the third book in The Fated Series. I can't say enough how much I love novels where the characters are strong, independent, but at the same time emotional, vulnerable, and crave a hug. I also have to say that I absolutely love dragons. Therefore, this is a guaranteed successful recipe for me. The author's writing is captivating, enjoyable, fast-paced, and has depth and humor. In other words, characteristics that satisfy even the most demanding reader.
Many thanks to the author and Crowns and Chaos PR for the eARC!
This book is absolutely killing it! I came in with a sour taste in my mouth for Finley but man as we learn more of her background and more of the situation between her and Etienne I find myself really rooting for her. I loved Brent in the first two books and i love him even more in this final book. Im not sure how him and finley are going to play out but as of now this story has already stolen all my time! Stay tuned for final review in a few short days…long sleepless nights are in my future because i need to finish this asap!
This book is both amazing and heartbreaking. Amazing, because it made me like the FMC when I was pretty opposed to her in the last book. You hurt my boy Brenton, you're dead to me! Haha! But then you get her story and it's like ohhhh. Okay. And then of course it's heartbreaking because it's the last book in the series. *sobs* There's so much left in this world to explore, I hope Y. Maria continues, but even if this is the end, it was an incredible ride and I'll recommend it to anyone looking for a new, unique romantasy!
I absolutely can’t believe that this is the end of the series and I truly hope that there is a spin off series coming soon I don’t want to leave these characters! I have been on the ARC team for every book in the series so far and just have to say that if Y. Maria writes it I am going to read it!
I was so excited to see Brenton get his well deserved HEA however I wasn’t so sure that it should have been with Finley. At least not until I got to know the real her hidden under her mask and defensiveness. This female fae had the absolute worst hand dealt to her and yet she still could be a soft woman when the moment called for it, she made the most of her situation at all times even when it literally felt like it was ripping her soul in half.
Brenton deserves a literal freaking award for being so dang awesome and the absolute best gentle-fae in the universe, like what grown male is going to let his fated mate go and comfort the man who she was intended to less than a moon cycle ago, without complaint and showing empathy and understanding.
Thank you so much to Y. Maria for the amazing birthday gift of this ARC and I have thoroughly enjoyed being a small part of your journey and I look forward to seeing where you go next! 10/10 definitely add this dragon rider, fae, fated mates romance to your TBR today!
This was the perfect ending to this series and we finally got Brenton and Finley's story! I always love when we get to continue other character's stories in a series and Y Maria brings back all of her familiar characters from book one and two ❤️. The way the relationship in this story is handled is amazing, Brenton is the most supportive MMC (huge green flag!). 4 beautiful stars 🌟
Read for: magic (so much magic!), twists and betrayals (I gasped so loud!), dragons, and found family. Go ahead and jump into books 1 and 2 available on KU now!
Thank you to the author for the gifted e-arc. All opinions are my own.
I received this copy from Nook & Fable Media! Amazingly written, this is the third book in the series, perfect for those who love dragon riders and romantasy. Loved the author’s world building and LOVE the MMC.
