Vampires don't exist.
Unless they do....
And if that's the case, then one better be prepared.
For Cadence Findley, Vampire Hunting isn't a choice: it's in her blood. Of course, she doesn't know that until she happens to meet a Vampire.
When her friend Drew disappears at a creepy Eidolon Festival, it is up to Cadence to save her, and that's when she realizes exactly who she really is: Cadence Findley, Vampire Hunter extraordinaire.
With the help of the Guardians, will Cadence successful hunt down the ancient Vampire Holland, or will Cadence be the next victim?

I.D. Johnson

ID Johnson wears many hats: mother, wife, editor, tutu maker, and writer, to name a few. Some of her favorite people are the two little girls who often implore that she "watch me!" in the middle of forming finely crafted sentences, that guy who dozes off well before she closes her laptop, and those furry critters at the foot of the bed at night. If she could do anything in the world, she would live in Cinderella's castle and write love stories all day while sipping Dr. Pepper and eating calorie-less Hershey's kisses. For now, she'll stick to her Dallas-area home and spending her days with the characters she's grown to love.

I don't usually go for vampire books since the whole blood sucking thing turns me off lol but this book was on point. The vampires don't sparkle in this book though. They do go through a range of emotions described beautifully by the author though. I loved Johnson's storyline it was very well developed. I think I'm going to check out some more books by this author now, and perhaps expand my horizons into some more vampire books.

Such wonderful characters

This is a great book to read on them cold winter nights. But keep a look out for the dark places. You will want to read all night. Great writing, characters fit each other. Love found in the weirdest situation's. I'd give 10 stars if it was allowed. Happy reading.

I'm giving this one two stars. The "it's okay" of GR.
Whilst I did enjoy the story, there were just too many red flags and things that made me go... "wait... what now?"

The system in this book says vampires are actually okay, as long as they stick to approved victims. The leader of the Hunters/Guardians (yes, one person) decides who is considered a meal and who isn't. Essentially, the vampires are allowed to kill (and I quote) "the under-belly of the human population". I'm sorry... oof... this is icky at best, and edging dangerously close to certain aspects of fascism.
Fitting into that category as well, is the hierarchy in the groups of Hunters and Guardians. The ones with the best Hunter or Guardian DNA through ancestors who are/were in that group, get the strongest, fastest, etc. and also get to be the leader of the group. Of course, the main character turns out to be like a "pure blood" without knowing it. Oh yes... they also get less self-control with that, because they are just so powerful their instincts take over. Sounds like leadership material right?

Other things with red flags/ high ick-factor:
* The leader of the group hits on the main character right away. Not only is she the newbie and he the big boss, he is also more than 100 years older than her. Nope. Ew.
* "I want to help!" [...] "You'll be more helpful in the car, praying."
* Calling a possible take-over of vampires "a holocaust".
I'm guessing this one is an unlucky mistake and the writer meant to say "genocide". The word holocaust refers specifically to the period 1933-1945 in which many, many people were killed, most of them jewish. I don't think this is a suitable term to just use in a fiction novel like this.
* All of the group members get a chip implanted in their eye, that allows them to communicate by thinking at each other. And see what the other person sees. Though they have the ability to block others, the "big boss" has an override and can see everything. Welcome to Big Brother.
None of them seem to have any issues with this, and the potential for abuse isn't even a spare thought in the book.
* Oh right... that big boss who was making the moves on the newbie main character? He is also her mentor. Sweet.
* There is actually one team member who tells big boss that a relationship with newbie is a bad idea. Not because of the obvious power imbalance or age gap though, no... he thinks she might start to feel entitled and snobby. Dude.
* There is more, like the main characters' behaviour... but I feel like it will be too much to write down.

So to conclude: entertaining book, very disturbing culture.
Oh. Yes, also. This book could have done with another round of editing.. Some little mishaps: burlesque is not what the writer seems to think it is. Some character had roots somewhere in Europe, "possibly Spain or France". As if these are remotely similar. And a room is "a large oval with squared off corners".

That's a rounded up 3 star at best. Saying I liked it is a stretch, but there were parts of it I liked.
I'm just over vampires... and that is not your fault. There is just nothing about that part of the story that interested me. So why did I read it then (being about vampire hunters and all)? I can't say for sure. I was looking for a lighter, quicker read... something fun and distracting, but that is not what this ended up being.
As far as I can tell, this book is predicated on the fact that vampires, guardians, and hunters are the only supernaturals. I find that limiting. I felt like this story tried to box me in somehow. Maybe this world is bigger and that is just what this particular story is about? If so, wouldn't we have at least seen something else, even if just in passing? And I'm not saying throw in a werewolf and call it Twilight, because no... just no, because vampires don't sparkle like My Little Pony and that is all I have to say about that. I just felt like there could have been more on the supernatural front.
The story was decent. The characters were okay. Aaron and Cadence doing this little dance around each other seems well... there would be no book without it I suppose, but after the grandmothers comment about the guardian and hunter leaders, if of the opposite sex, almost always getting married.. Cadence is a smart girl. How has she not connected the dots yet?
While I may have been into the story enough to finish it, I did not become invested enough to want to continue on with this series. Vampires? See above, still no. Aaron and Cadence? Kinda but still probably no. Cadence's ex-boyfriend who is now undead? Definitely no.

Great choice for vampire fans, unless you are in the side of the vampires. The main characters are nice and the interaction between them remind me of how my high school used to be. Nonetheless, like any other series, the first book turns out to be a very long introduction to the characters and their history. Most of the first half of the story what a very long trip through getting to meet the characters and setting the scene for ending of first book and beginning of second. Likewise, the ending is an introduction to the second book. I would read the second book and give it a chance, condition to a lot more detail on the aspects relevant to the story.

A good but tragic story. Cadence Finley went to a festival with her circle of friends. Unfortunately, one of them dies there. Cadence gets swept up in a paranormal world she has never before known. While the main plot line is resolved, several cautionary tales, or subplots, are left unexplored. Hopefully, each of these will be handled in future books of the series. Overall worth the time.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Funny. Great world building. Haunting. Romantic. Scary. Tear-jerker. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.

Nice read

It was well written with a very interesting plot, although I just couldn't see vampirism being so easily transmitted through bite or scratch. We would be overrun with vampires if it was that easy. There seemed to be a bit too much romance for my taste, but that is just my personal problem. I finished it and that is saying something positive because it's hard to hold my interest nowadays.

The main character its awesome. She would make a great hero. The plot seemed pretty basic. There wasn't much embellishment. It kind of seemed like the story went like this: "first, this happened. Then, this happened. Next, this happened. Right after that, this happened.

Still, i enjoyed it enough to finish reading it. I don't think I would feel comfortable reading this to my children.

Fun Read

Fast build up to the action, could have used a bit more character building. Definitely reads like the beginning of a series(which it is). Enjoyable quick read. I’d recommend to my niece as she’s the same age as the protagonist. Or those who enjoy Buffy type vampire stories.

This is a very interesting take on vampires and the supernaturals who track and keep them in line. I really liked reading this story and look forward to future books.

A well written Vampire trilogy with a slight twist. You won't find sparkling vampires in this book. However, you will find a little love twist, love, lose, and jealousy - oh you will find deceit and deception, revenge and more. Johnson, has a well developed story line that will leave you wanting more and more. The character development is excellent as you learn just a little bit at a time about each character and what makes then tick. It is also refreshing to see a heroine instead of someone waiting for the man to save the day. The main character shows her strength from the very beginning and demonstrates her wits and instincts to be morally sound and supportive of good. Well done- I highly recommend this book to paranormal readers!

I have to be honest, I was going to quit this book after one chapter. but then I really got into it. unfortunately I can't get the next books in the series because my library doesn't carry them, which is a shame, because of how good it was.

I am impressed! Let me start off by saying I am an avid reader of all paranormal romance. I tend to like more erotica in my paranormal, which is why stories have to be actually good for me to stick with it when it's more of a young adult type read. I read so many PR that it's truly hard to find good stories after you've read some of the best. There are so many out there that are just lacking these days it's really hard for me to find a story I love. I loved this story. While it didn't have so much the romance, even though I'm halfway through book two as well. I'm so interested in this series I actually went ahead and read reviews and blurbs on the next two books in the series. I also went and checked out the author's FB & blog page which compelled me to write this review actually. For a author to get rude reviews when she clearly has a interesting paranormal series coming along that me as a 34yr old adult would also love to share with my 14yr old daughter I felt it nessecary to add praise when praise is due. I'll be sure to leave recommendations for this series on my many of many book pages I'm a part off. I can not wait to finish this series and read the rest you have written. Thank you for taking the precious time from your family to share these stories with us! It is not unappreciated! One very happy reader here!
