Eighteen-year-old Fae Princess Aeloria Wynndale is the most powerful shapeshifter in the realm of Ettidoria.
On the night she is meant to solidify her political marriage to the Elven Prince of Vaelora, she is stolen by the ruthless Demon King, Ryvathis.
Ryvathis is shadow and ruin made flesh, a monster feared across every realm, and he has claimed her as his weapon.
Trapped in his war-ravaged kingdom of Nyxvaris, Aeloria refuses to be a pawn in his desperate gamble to save his dying lands.
Until the dead begin to rise.
The long-lost Eighth Kingdom stirs, and with it comes a threat that devours not just his lands, but hers as well. To escape would condemn thousands to slaughter. To stay means trusting the handsome monster who looks at her like she's salvation and damnation in one—the man who stole everything from her.
As Nyxvaris crumbles and darkness closes in, her hatred for Ryvathis ignites into something far more dangerous. A bond that could save the realms or destroy everything she's ever loved.

World building: 4.5/5 Enemies to lovers: 4/5 Character development: 3.5/5 Romance: 4/5 Spice level: low to moderate
This was such a fun read! This series has so much potential and I’m excited to see how it develops. And my gosh look at how beautiful this cover is!!!!
The chemistry between the characters is delicious, the romance was hot 🔥
I appreciate how descriptive the world building was from the characters to all the scenes. Throughout the story I kept visualizing what was happening and where which is very refreshing!!
The reason why this wasn’t a 5/5 for me because I did feel like the story felt a bit rushed at times but I look forward to seeing more of Aeloria’s magic!
Overall this was a good story that definitely had me continuously turning the page!

A Crown of Beasts is the first book in Ally Washington’s new romantic fantasy, Crown of Beasts. Ally is a new-to-me author, and I enjoyed the world she created for this series.
In A Crown of Beasts, eighteen-year-old Fae Princess Aeloria “Loria” Wynndale isn’t your traditional prim and proper princess. She understands royal politics, but she would much rather wear casual clothes and run around the forest talking to animals than spend time smiling, nodding, and wearing extravagant gowns. Through an agreement with their fathers, Loria is to wed Elven Prince Kaelindril and move to his kingdom of Vaelora, which is completely different from her kingdom of Animara. While Loria is apprehensive, she knows it is her duty to her kingdom to do so, as the marriage would form a strong alliance between the two kingdoms.
On her journey to Vaelora, Loria is kidnapped by none other than Ryvathis, the Demon King of Nyxvaris. However, things are not as they appear. Loria and Ryvathis have this push-and-pull relationship. She despises him, but slowly finds herself having unwanted feelings for him. When an ancient prophecy is revealed, Loria questions if it’s true. Before long, Loria realizes that she’s traded one prison for another and finally has the courage to pick herself for once in her life.
I love that Ally has written a story that isn’t fully predictable. I liked Loria, but I loved Ryvathis, who is this complex character, and nothing like I expected. I found my heart cracking for these two who found themselves in tough situations. Their chemistry when they give in to each other was explosive. I even found myself holding my breath during an epic fight scene. The ending left me shocked and unsure how to feel. I hope I don’t have to wait long for the next book.

This was an awesome story. The world building was fantastic. The description was so vivid, it felt like I was actually there. And I absolutely loved the characters. The depth of this was beautiful. I loved the dual POVs as well, but I wish they had been split up a little better. They seemed to weigh heavily with one character for too many chapters at a time. But I definitely can’t wait to read the next one.
This was an intense dark romantasy with a fated-mates bond that felt emotionally layered instead of simple or instantly romantic. I appreciated how the relationship was tangled with the FMC’s internal battle between who she is, what is expected of her, what fate demands, and what freedom, love, peace, and choice might actually cost.
The writing itself was one of the strongest parts for me. The descriptive visual worldbuilding, immersive language, and intentional imagery gave the different realms their own texture, while also adding subtext to the larger story. The language choices around each realm felt deliberate, especially in how they reinforced themes of colonization, systemic erasure, demonization, power, control, and choice.
One mirrored moment became the clearest example of the deeper contrast between the realms. It wasn’t only that similar scenes happened in both places, but the language, imagery, and emotional texture around them. One realm is framed through peace, stability, purity, protection, and the promise of a better future, but beneath that is pressure toward control, suppression, acceptability, and erasure. The other is labeled through darkness, taint, and the unnatural, yet the lived experience there can feel tender, practical, dignifying, familiar, and emotionally safe. That contrast made the erasure, power dynamics, and control feel personal instead of abstract.
I also appreciated how sincere the FMC felt at her core. Her desire for peace was not passive or performative; she genuinely wanted to unite the kingdoms, build bridges, and be seen as an equal partner rather than a political asset. I liked the contrast between how she is treated as delicate, manageable, and politically useful and how she actually moves through the story: strong, sincere, fierce, swift, visionary, and far more capable than people assume. She wants to be recognized and appreciated for her innate strength, not handled or reshaped into something more acceptable.
The fated-mates bond felt visceral. What stood out to me was not just the attraction or the prophecy, but the physical, emotional, and mental pain of distance between two people whose bond seems to need unity, even as they both try to fight what that prophecy could mean. Their connection felt almost symbiotic in the way they could feel each other, but it still left room for something more human: the desire for companionship, to be seen, wanted, respected, and genuinely loved.
The writing did not just describe what was happening; it also carried the fear, urgency, and emotional intensity underneath it. The moments of danger and physical pain felt connected to the emotional stakes, which made the darker parts of the story feel immersive.
Overall, this was a layered, emotional, and immersive romantasy with thoughtful themes around colonization, power, erasure, identity, freedom, and love. I’m excited to see how the rest of the trilogy builds on these characters, themes, and realms.

This book has so many elements I enjoy—fae, unique powers, romance, and an interesting world. The cover is absolutely beautiful! One of my favorite parts early on was her communication with animals. That added such a fun and exciting layer to her character, and I kept hoping to see more of it throughout the book.
The worldbuilding felt strong at first, but the writing quickly became repetitive. Certain phrases, descriptions, scents, and colors were used so often that it became distracting.
The FMC is called a warrior princess, but I never really felt the warrior side of her. She has interesting powers with her animal forms, but those abilities felt underused after the first part of the book, and she often came across as more helpless than powerful. I also kept wondering why her bond with animals was different than the other fae (she didn’t have a companion that stayed with her always) and that never felt fully developed. The MMC didn’t stand out much for me and seemed a little too familiar compared to male leads in other romantic fantasies.
Some scenes also felt rushed or glossed over, and a few characters introduced early seemed to disappear once the romance took center stage.
Overall, I can absolutely see this being a great read for someone newer to romantasy. It has strong bones and several appealing ideas. For me, having read so many books in this genre, I wanted the more unique elements, like her connection with animals, to be developed further so the story could really stand out. This is a 3.5 star read for me.
I was a bit apprehensive when reading it at first. I thought I would start reading all of the usual tropes that are filled with this genre that I could guess from just the cover. I expected the usual strong in the mind but physically frail Main Female Character (MFC), the brooding, mysteriously evil Main Male character (MMC), and just enough magic and war between whatever to dress up the romance. I was pleasantly proven wrong.
The story takes time to flesh out the world, rules, and politics around it without confusion or over-repetition. I am enveloped in the world, and it actually makes me want to know more of it, outside of the main story that we are following. The main female character, Loria, is not just a blank self-insert person for us to position ourselves into. She has a personality with dimension, depth, and honesty. Although I can not fully identify with her, I can take characteristics from her and actually see myself. A human!-ish (fae story haha).
I can not express enough the relief I felt when reading the dynamic of the building romance in the book. Finally, something that is not giving me the absolute ick or questioning the consent of either party. The relationship is being built with genuine communication that leads to proper emotional tension that isn't just written to move the story forward.
Without spoiling further, I can not express my genuine joy and surprise of finally reading something that gives this genre new life. New rules! A new story that engrosses you and leaves you wanting more. I can not wait for more to come. I will be waiting.
This book was a fun ride and had good major plot progression, but slowed down a bit around the halfway mark due to the amount of pushing and pulling within the development of the romantic relationship. That being said, I did like their banter. I really enjoyed the description of Loria's abilities, which was done very nicely! I also loved that she unabashedly expressed her rage and fought hard when she had nothing to lose. Unfortunately, there were some plot blips, and a good amount of telling where there could have been showing, foreshadowing, or just making the reader think. However, this is not the case with the MMC; we learn a good deal about him through his actions and interactions with others, which was a nice touch. Overall, Aeloria is strong and still growing and finding her purpose despite the obstacles and everything that she's gone through. I hope we'll get to see the product of both Loria's and Ryvathis's immense character development from Book 1 in Book 2.

I ended up DNFing this at around 42%. There were definitely moments where I thought the story was starting to find its footing, especially once the political conflict and the Demon King were introduced, but overall the experience felt too inconsistent for me to stay invested.
The biggest issue for me was that the book had a lot of interesting ideas, but not enough development behind them. The worldbuilding felt very surface level, the prophecy and political motivations were often vague, and a lot of the emotional tension between the characters felt forced rather than naturally earned. There were also quite a few continuity and logic issues that kept pulling me out of the story.
That said, I don’t think this was completely without potential. The Demon King had a strong presence whenever he was on page, and there were glimpses of a much more compelling story underneath everything else. Unfortunately, the execution just didn’t fully come together for me, and I found myself having no real desire to pick it back up after putting it down.
Overall, this one just felt very middle-of-the-road for me. Not terrible, but not strong enough to hold my attention long term.
If you are looking for a slow burn Romantasy with an engaging plot, this might be your cup of tea.
The first half is very attention grabbing but it does tend to slow down once the focus is on the relationship development between the FMC and the MC but picks back up with just enough to leave the audience wanting more. The initial meeting of the two MC is still my favorite scene.
One of the opportunities I feel this story has is providing us with more character development as well as giving us a little more detail on how we get from Point A to point B. There were a few instances I would have liked to see the development or journey rather then just be told where it started and the outcome (If that makes sense).
Overall I look forward to continuing this story.

I was completely hooked on A Crown of Beasts from start to finish — the writing is so immersive that I genuinely felt pulled into the world.
This is one of those books you tell yourself you’ll read “just one more chapter”… and suddenly you’ve finished the entire thing in 24 hours (which is exactly what happened to me 😂).
Ally Washington’s writing style flows effortlessly and makes it incredibly easy to get lost in the story. The atmosphere, tension, and pacing kept me fully engaged the entire time, and I never felt like the story slowed down.
If you love dark, immersive romantasy that keeps you turning pages late into the night, this is absolutely worth picking up.
I’ll definitely be continuing this series — I need more.

Loria always thought her life was all planned out. As a princess of a magical land where she can shapeshift into animals and is totally at peace with nature, her future is set. Simple, just marry the fae prince and unite their kingdoms. Everything is going to plan… until she’s kidnapped by the Demon Prince 👀
Ryvathis, the Demon Prince, is powerful, dangerous, and very hard to ignore. He claims he wants to save her from a marriage that would suppress her magic and instead plans to marry her himself. From there, Loria is thrown into a whirlwind of life threatening situations, political tension, and two kingdoms fighting for control over her future 🔥
I loved the progression of this story. Loria is a strong woman, who refuses to simply accept the fate others try to force on her. She questions everything, pushes back, and fights for both herself and her kingdom!
Read this for: ✨Dual POV ✨Slow Burn ✨Enemies to Lovers ✨He Falls First ✨Morally Gray MMC ✨Captive/Kidnap
This book was everything I needed when it came to fairytales where black women are loved properly. It was alluring the way she described everything from the sight, sounds and vibrancy of the palaces and the forests. I love stories that make you feel like you know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are only to be emotionally turned upside down when the truth comes out. It was a great book if you like a good fairytale where the FMC starts out innocent and trusting , unsure of her self but then as the story progresses she finds her own voice (not that of her father's or duty) and makes her own decisions and comes out on the otherside a person she can call confident and self assured .

This book was full of many surprises. I loved the different elements of it. The FMC being forced into something she didn’t want to do, but had to it anyways. Then she finds her voice and stands up for what she wants. The man that stands beside her, terrifying, yet so loving and caring. This has animal companions, fae, demons, and elven. I really enjoyed that the FMC kingdom bonds with animals and can shift into animals. The author did a great job describing all the different elements. The cliffhanger at the ending!!! Why oh why must you did this to us. Now I need the second book asap!! Thank you to the author for an arc.
Thank you so much to the author for the ARC of A Crown of Beasts. I had such a fun time with this story!
This is a slow burn Romantasy with an engaging plot. Our FMC is a fierce and feisty Fae Princess who is bonded to animal companions and can shift into them. I absolutely adore her! Our MMC is a morally grey Demon King Shadow Daddy who you will swoon over! The banter and the chemistry between the two is delicious.
The writing is immersive so I felt like I was pulled into this world and I didn’t want to leave it. I loved the plot progression and the characters. I am excited for book two!!
Book 1 of the A Crown of Beasts Trilogy. And a wonderful start it is! Look forward to more from this world.
'As Nyxvaris crumbles and darkness closes in, her hatred for Ryvathis ignites into something far more dangerous. A bond that could save the realms or destroy everything she's ever loved.'
The characters drove the storyline and they were very compelling and complex and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and exciting and well paced. World building was excellent and impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

First off let me say how much I luv THAT COVER! It's deliciously sumptuous! I thought the world building was intriguing and I found the side characters interesting. Wasn't sure how I felt about our main character, however she comes into her own. The mmc was unexpectedly expected if that makes sense to you. Overall, I enjoyed the plot and characters. Looking forward to a better book two where we enjoy all aspects of the journey.

Loria did annoy me a little at the start, but she redeemed herself as the story went on. And King Ryvathis? I accept no slander 😌
It was a bit cliché and predictable in places, but the world-building was easy to follow while still feeling immersive, which made it a really smooth read.
And that cliffhanger… yeah, I’m already excited for book two 🤩
Thank you to Booksprout and the author for providing an ARC!
I absolutely devoured this series. I love the world building and our beautiful fae princess Aeloria. This is one of those series where I really just couldn't stop reading and it felt like I was genuinely in their world. Not only did I love her strong personality but I also loved the entire animal companion element. Everything in this world was just so magical. And this enemies to lovers situation with her and the demon king was everything!
Yalll! Give me the second book now! So I’m not going to lie the beginning of the book was establishing the characters, and world building. But from Lorias first shift and then Ryvathis first POV chapter it was a page turner for me. This book was a slow burn, he falls first, she’s conflicted between duty and the heart kind of book. With that being said I cant wait to continue the series.

This was my first time reading a book like this (shapeshifting, elves, beasts). But what really struck me was the representation- Loria being a POC . The book was interesting and kept me poised to keep reading.

This was an enjoyable read overall, with an interesting and creative plot that kept me engaged! However, the story sometimes felt repetitive(over use of the same lines), and there were a few inconsistencies that stood out. The pacing also felt rushed in places, with a lot happening in a short amount of time
This was a refreshing fantasy read. I loved the world building as well as the romance. The plot was also captivating. Really excited to get into the rest of this series.

You ever not want to get to the end of the book because it is so good? The imagery and storyline. I’m obsessed. Will definitely be reading the rest of the series!!
3.5 star read! The story was very interesting and I loved the magic system especially the FMC's powers as it's not something that I've read about. It did get a tad slow in the beginning and while it does have dual pov 40-45 percent of the beginning is solely in the pov of the FMC. Overall I did enjoy it and appreciated the authors writing style.
I got this ARC from Bookspourt but this review is voluntary and the rating and opinion of the story is solely mine.
