MY OBSESSION: MURPHY ENTERPRISES

Rate this book
This second edition includes minor revisions to improve clarity in scenes involving sensitive subject matter. The wording has been refined to ensure the intended context is clearly conveyed to readers.

What happens when a billionaire psychopath sets his eyes on a down-on-his-luck nobody?

Xavier: I’m just trying to survive as best as I can. I can’t trust anyone other than my best friend Jess. I’ve lost my job, my mother hates me, and my boyfriend cheated on me. They say bad things come in threes, right? When Jess drags me to a club I have no business being in, I thought I could forget about everything just for a little while. I am saved from a monster by the man of my dreams. But I soon find out that he is a powerful, possessive man. I don’t know if I will be able to survive his obsession with me.

Declan: I see him. I want him. No one else can have him. I will do what I need to do to keep him safe. I’m not a hero. My family takes out those who deserve it. He may think he has a choice, but he doesn’t. He is mine, and I keep what belongs to me. He is My Obsession.

My Obsession is a dark M/M romance featuring an obsessive, morally gray love interest, possessive themes, and intense emotional dependency. Reader discretion advised.

2.5 stars

I'm going to start off by saying, if you want to read instalove and 1 MMC being a murderer done well, go read The Hazard and the Hitman. Don't bother with this book. I gave that one five stars, and this one I'm being generous by giving 2.5.

Declan is 26. He is from a very wealthy family, where the men are psychopaths of varying degrees. They aren't good with emotions and social cues, and they crave violence. His aunt has tried to steer them to use those negative urges in productive ways, by having her nephews and sons take out the trash, killing the perpetrators of violence against women and children that she comes across in her charity work. One night at a club, Declan catches sight of Xavier dancing. And he decides that he wants him. That he is his. He previously identified as straight, he'd never been with a man before, and Declan was all in for Xavier, with them only having shared a couple words. It was the worst kind of what I'm going to call "instamine" as opposed to instalove.

Xavier is 24 and gay. He has had a rough life. His father and sister died when he was 17. They were in a car, and they were struck by a drunk driver. Xavier was driving and he survived, but his mother never really loved him, she always wanted a girl, and she blamed him for their deaths and held it over him ever since. She's been guilting him into providing for her ever since. Xavier worked hard to get a good job, but his homophobic boss just fired him and he's broke. As soon as he finds out that the guy paying him attention is wealthy and powerful, Xavier wants to peace out because he's afraid of pissing him off and getting blacklisted by him. But Declan won't take no for an answer and he manipulates his way close to Xavier, and Xavier is attracted so he gives in. They are starting to get close, though it's still very superficial, and then Xavier gets kidnapped.

I was willing to give this book a chance, it didn't start off on the best of foots, but I was giving it time to grow on me. To have the characters get to a good place. And then the last 15% of the book happened and I was honestly offended by this book. I feel like the author needed a sensitivity reader with regards to the sexual assault themes. I will go into all my reasons that I didn't like it below.

Things I didn't like, in chronological order:

- An hour after meeting Xavier, Declan says that no one has ever held his attention this long. It's only been like an hour. No one has held your attention for an hour before?! Way to look like an a******.

- Page 42 - Declan sounds insane. I really don't like this take on instalove. It's one thing to be attracted to a person at first sight, and protective of them... interested. But he's hardly exchanged more than a few words with this guy, and he's already ready to basically marry him, be life partners with him. I really want to see my characters actually fall in love with who that person is as a person. And he doesn't even know who Xavier is as a person yet.

- I don't like how the author tells one chapter from one character's perspective, and then shows the next character's perspective for the same events and time period. It's repetitive to reset the day and sometimes there's duplication of conversations. It would flow better if the time frame was continuous. The author doesn't have to repeat the events from both characters' povs to tell the story!

- 52% mark - I don't like when a character makes promises they shouldn't be making yet. He's promising Xavier that he's never going to let him go, yet they hardly actually know each other as people and Declan has never even had sex with a man. Is he going to want this forever? I don't believe him yet

- 52% mark - Declan says that he has never cared about whether his partner climaxed before. A selfish lover is not a flex! Not attractive in an MMC.

- page 162 - Xavier's acceptance of who Declan is comes off as too easy and trite

- The problem with a psychopath, is that they aren't very likeable when they are cold. And the cold and dispassionate way that they talk makes it seem like they feel less than they actually do towards their love interest. That's what I'm getting from Declan, he's inconsiderate and very unlikable.

- One of the characters jokes about whether Declan let's Xavier go to the bathroom on his own. But I don't know if the author realizes the plot problem she created - Declan bugged Xavier's phone and watch, so that he can listen in on everything Xavier does. So yeah, Declan would hear when Xavier is taking a piss or a s***. Give a boy some space!

- Page 221 - Just a page or two ago, Xavier was appalled at the idea of murder, and he wanted to leave Declan. And now he is encouraging Declan to go out and murder the three guys, to be his weapon, so that they can start their lives together. It's inconsistent and it's trite.

- The author doesn't confirm whether or not Xavier was raped. I know he wasn't held captive that long, but those sick fucks were fighting over who got to f*** him first, and it seems unlikely that they wouldn't have, they had him naked right away. It seems insensitive and poor story writing for Declan to so quickly be telling Xavier after he woke up from a three-day medical coma that he's going to f*** him. You don't treat someone who went through this trauma of kidnapping, severe assault, and potentially rape so insensitively. And the author just skips to the epilogue right after this, without any trauma recovery. I don't like how the reveal about Declan's family murdering people took over Xavier's recovery from his trauma. And that they jumped over his recovery straight to an epilogue where everything is fine. I think the author really needed a sensitivity reader, because this was not how you should be writing a sexual assault theme.

- Page 243 - Why was it necessary to have Declan and Xavier run into Xavier's ex from years ago now? Just to show off that Xavier has succeeded? It's unnecessary, Xavier has much bigger things to deal with than to revisit a relationship/conflict that ended years ago just for the sake of it, there are so much more important things that could have been elaborated on in this moment, like Xavier's mental well-being and physical recovery, and developing the intimacy of the relationship between Declan and Xavier.

Some notable moments:

"“Let’s go back to the living room. Ronan is stopping by with the rest.” “Ronan? Your other cousin? The rest of what?” He asks as I take his hand and lead him back to the living room. Before I can explain, I find Ronan leaning against the arm of the sofa, scrolling on his phone. “How long have you been here?” “Long enough to know about the sex toys.” “Fucking kill me now!” Xavier plops down hard on the sofa and drapes his arm across his eyes."

"He wraps me in his arms and teases me about petting him instead of my shirt. I have a funny feeling in my gut that’s popped up a couple of times before, but I can’t even explain it to myself. It hits me when he kisses my forehead. Home. He feels like home. I’m so fucked."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Psychopath & Cinnamon Roll

Probably my favorite trope...Billionaire Psychopath × Cinnamon Roll. I eat it up. This is a debut MM novel that I was lucky enough to receive as an ARC and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to more books in this series since there is a family of psychopaths all needing their own HEA's. You can expect a possessive, growly MMC in Declan who definitely struggles masking his psychopath tendencies but can be soft with Xavier, who is a financially struggling but fiercely independent sweetheart. Once Declan sets his sights on Xavier that's it, he wants to keep him, stalk him...all the things even though Xavier tries to resist. I gave this book 5-stars and cannot wait for the next book.

I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Okay so a billionaire psychopath sees a guy at his club and just decides — that one. Mine. No questions asked. And honestly?? I get you, Declan. I get you.

Xavier is having the worst streak of bad luck imaginable — just lost his job, broke, barely surviving — and then he crosses paths with Declan Murphy, who is not only insanely rich and powerful but also part of an Irish crime family that basically owns the city. Declan sees him once and that's it. Xavier is his. End of discussion.

And that's where the wild ride begins.

Declan is controlling, possessive, dangerous and morally grey to the absolute extreme — and I should have been scared for Xavier but instead I was cheering Declan on the entire time?? What is wrong with me.

Xavier slowly going from terrified to completely falling for this unhinged, beautiful, dangerous man had me so invested I forgot to breathe at some points. There are also moments with the Murphy family that completely melted my heart — because behind that whole psychopathic exterior there is something else entirely.

And when things escalated and someone threatened what belongs to Declan?? I put my kindle down and stared at the ceiling for a moment. Then picked it back up immediately because I couldn't stop.

And yes — there is an HEA. Even though it's very dark and at times genuinely intense — these two deserve their happy ending and they get it. I have no notes. Send help.

TROPES:
POV: dual 3rd person (Declan & Xavier)
Angst: high
Burn: medium
Dark romance
Billionaire / organized crime
Obsession / stalking
Possessive love interest
Morally grey MMC

SPICE:

The tension and the obsession carry this book more than the actual steam. The scenes are good but the real heat is Declan himself. That man is a whole warning label.

CONTENT WARNINGS:
Stalking / obsessive behavior
Noncon / dubcon
Kidnapping
Violence and assault
Organized crime
Murder
Coercive control dynamics

Oh, I just love a main character who speaks about women this way (every sarcasm intended-)

"She's nothing but a gold-digging whore, Dad." I interrupt him. "It's an irritant I don't need...."

"Would you like to explain to me why a woman is in with the head of HR, crying?"

"How the fuck would I know?" I ask. "And why would I care?"

It's his assistant and he's not a bad boy, he's a flaming misogynist.

I'm out.

So excited for this new series by a new to me author! There’s nothing I love more than obsessive psychopaths!! But, this series is very much giving Necessary Evils by Onley James. They’re all psychopath brothers who don’t have many feelings but they find that one person who changes that for them. I’m not complaining though because I definitely enjoyed this.

Declan was by far my favorite character in this book. I loved him so much. He sees Xavier and its obsession on sight!! He doesn’t even care that Xavier is a man and he’s never been interested in men before. Declan was sooo obsessive and possessive. Doesn’t enjoy the word no and also doesn’t enjoy anyone touching his man. It’s literally touch him and die. I laughed through the massage scene when Declan didn’t realize setting a massage up for Xavier meant that someone would have to touch him!! Declan was honestly so funny. Him not understanding social cues and being so blunt just made his character so much better.

Xavier wasn’t necessarily my favorite. He annoyed me with how much he pushed Declan away and I felt like his reasonings kept changing and had me confused. Especially toward the end when he’s like “idk if I can be with a killer” and then two seconds later “I accept you”. Kind of got whiplash from him.

I did like how Xavier was always the one getting hit on. Usually it’s the hot rich one that’s always getting hit on in these books so it was nice it wasn’t always Declan. There was no true OP drama. Just them getting hit on. Declan simply wouldn’t allow it.

There were some typos and quite a few inconsistencies though. I think it needed maybe one more run through editing if I’m being honest. I also was confused by Declan’s nickname for Xavier which was A Ghra, which means “my love.” But Declan kept saying “my A Ghra” which would mean he kept saying “my my love.” Idk why this bugged me but something in my brain wouldn’t let it go.

Loved the secondary characters. I also hope Declan’s dad gets his own book! Not super happy about there being a complete manwhore in the group. I swear we can never get a series without one of them that will sleep with anything that walks. I hope how much Conor is a manwhore isn’t brought up in every single book before his. I’m actually really interested in his book because it looks like he will be with that fighter, Jaxon.

I’m so glad Ronan’s book is next. I was so intrigued by him and even more so when we find out he’s on the autism spectrum!

No cheating. No true OP drama (just others wanting them). No third act break up. Kidnapping and off page torture (to mc not by mc), talk of SA on mc. Torture and murder (on page by MC) HEA

This was a nice, Ott, fun, and fast-paced read, I especially enjoyed the sibling bickering and family meetups. I also appreciated that the family wasn't just entitled; they all used their wealth, power, and status to protect the weak, and that's pretty cool.

Ok....now on to my review. This is the first book by Wendi Varner that I have read and I am excited to say definitely won't be my last. I am an immersive reading kind of girl but this book was SOOO good I didn't even miss not having an audio to go along with it.

Its starts out with Xaviar who is struggling to make ends meet even with his current job because his emotionally manipulative/abusive excuse for a mother guilts him into giving him over half of his salary every month. Xaviar gets fired by his homophobic boss and goes out clubbing with his BFF Jess to let of some steam and relax. It is there at the club that Declan sees Xaviar for the first time. And it is literally obsession at first sight. Declan saves Xaviar from a dangerous encounter and literally decides that he is "his." When Xaviar realizes who Declan is and who his family is he runs out of the club like is a** is on fire. It is from that moment on Declan implants himself in every aspect of Xaviar's life. Declan is determined to do whatever is necessary for Xaviar to reciprocate his feelings and understand what being "his" means LOL. The frustration that Xaviar expresses early on while dealing with Declan's obsessive/possessive behaviors is hilarious.

The banter between Declan and his 4 cousins is next level. They are all diagnosed Psychopaths with antisocial tendencies. I am down bad for a psychopath!!! These five guys had my laughing out loud multiple times throughout the book. The relationship that the men have with Alessia (Declan's aunt and the cousins mom) is special and the way she takes Xaviar under wing to help him better understand and deal with Declan was heartwarming. But don't let her fool you she is the real head of that family and I am here for it.

I would definitely recommend this book and I am so excited for book 2 My Addiction to be released. Happy Reading!!!!

The love story is an unusual one, that is to be expected because Declan is not a regular guy, unfortunately while they have sexual chemistry they don't have much of anything else as a couple, in my opinion.
The characters are ok, one thing that bothers me is that although we see the story from both of the characters perspectives and they are complete opposites they ,,sound,, too similar.
Another thing that really bothers me is the information dump that we constantly receive at the beginning of the book, if only one of the characters did that, it would be fun, a quirk of the character but it happens with the both of them, after the halfway point it gets better.

Absolutely loved the book.

Reread 21st may 2026

I've read the new reviews and also seen what the Author posted on Tiktok.

Lets be real this is her first novel, its not going to be perfect but for a debut i believe it was amazing, especially with how she portrayed Declan and handled the whole psychopathy spectrum, for me who knows at lot about this, how he acted is true to the nature, as a psychopath does not love or insta-love, for them its an obsession, a psychopath does NOT understand emotions thiers or others.

Also telling people to read a specific and not in general is disrespectful to the author.

I understand we all may have different opinions but please dont comment saying its crap because you feel the main character who is on the psychopathy spectrum is really insane, shocker he will feel insane but is more unreasonable in a social setting or arguments as he lacks empathy and remorse, everything he understands is learned emotionals, unless you really read the book i personally dont feel you understand how she portrayed Declan as good as she did, because he is a psychopath and for them understanding others with feelings is not easy and i really got that in the book, we also get to see him learn from Xaviar. Also for saying she didnt put anything into the what happened to Xaviar it is in the trigger warnings and also the book if you really read the book you will know what happened to him and how far it went.

Maybe she does need some alpha, beta, editor, but lets go back to what i said at the start this is a debut novel, not every author starts from the top and this was not really bad as made out, for me i only found 4 things and they were minor issues that were not inpacted too much in the story, jut left a question mark, but in her 2nd book her writing grew and these issues were non void.

I really thought it was funny how 1 person reviewed about how Declan spoke about about previous pa but failed to comment that the person in question has filed a sexual harassment claim at him because he fired her because he kept saying no to her advances but wouldn't listen, its soo jaded and more personal preference.

I really enjoyed reading this book, yes its not perfect and does need a little tweaking but for me personally i rated it 5 stars because for a first novel Wendi did amazing, Xaviar was so strong, i loved how he went against Declan and stuck up for himself and learned to love even after his ex and mother, how Declan learned to hold himself back and communicate with Xaviar, with wendis books i didnt just read i felt her words, the characters and the plot.

If you are reading these reviews id say give it a read as what may not be for others may be amazing for you and if you do please read on to the next book my addiction, Wendi proved how she is growing as a writer in that book, for me its 1 of my top 5 favourite reads of the year.

3.5 stars ⭐

1st person POV Dual
MM
Plot 3/5
Spice 2/5
Insta love/ Obsession
Stalking
Manipulation

I love when these big bad psychopaths are brought to their knees by some unsuspecting person!

Declan sees Xavier dancing in a club and that's all it took to make whatever messed up switch in his brain flip! Suddenly it doesn't matter that Declan has never been with a man or has never felt this kind of possessiveness before. Xavier is his and he will make sure he knows that!

My only real complaint about this book was that the repetitive chapter got me. One chapter would be Declan POV then the next would be Xavier's but it was the same time, so same dialogue and storyline, it made the story stall for me and messed with the flow of it. It kept me from really engrossing myself in this book the way I wanted too!

But even with that I am excited for the next book!

Xavier has been down on his luck with losing his job and not being able to pay his bills. When his friend takes him to a spicy club, Declan Murphy spots him dancing and is instantly intrigued and wants him. Xavier is weary to Declan's advances because he's not used to someone being obsessed with him or someone helping him with his financial struggles while barely knowing him.

Declan was a bit over the top, but Xavier soon learned to just go with it because he couldn't stay away either.

5 stars for My Obsession by Wendi Varner! Declan and Xavier are such a cute couple, and their chemistry is undeniable from the start. Xavier goes through so much pain and heartbreak, and my heart absolutely ached for him throughout the story. Declan is truly his knight in black, always there when Xavier needs him most. Their journey together is emotional, intense, and so rewarding to watch unfold. If you love romances with protective heroes, deep emotions, and a couple you can’t help but root for, this one is definitely worth reading.

I received an arc for this in exchange for an honest review.

Pros:
-The storyline
- Declan's immediate obsession with Xavier
- Deckland's overprotectiveness and possessiveness of Xavier
- Xavier's growth in finally being able to tell no to his mom.
- The author not shying away from the brutality of that kidnapping and torturous scene.
- The aunt annd her ability to communicate with them and understand them

Not my favs:
- The way Declan speaks of woman
- The repetitions of one scene told from the other MMC's perspective

Looking forward to the rest of the serie

I didn't enjoy the book at all, I was really looking forward to read this book, I have seen it all over social media for a while and I'm disappointed. After 23 pages I knew its not going to be a good read, after 99 I wanted to DNF it because all I could think of was that a robot had written that book, those characters did nothing for me. All I could think was that it reminds me of Agnels of Wrath by Paulina Ian-Kane and not in a good way. Shame really because it could be a good book.

A must read!

I absolutely cannot wait for the next book to come out! Declan is a serious black Knight, his obsession his possessiveness is absolutely swoon worthy I can’t get enough. Xavier might be small, but he is sassy and doesn’t put up with anything. I am hoping that all the cousins get their book as well.

The connection just felt forced

The premise behind the storyline was ok. The connection between the two characters never really felt complete almost like the storyline and character development was rushed. Overall it was a good read to wind down from a long day

Dark

Declan really is obsessed with Xavier. This book id a dark romance with dark situations. I don't read much of these kind of books. I usually like books that give me warm and fuzzy feelings. This didn't in the best way Declan and his cousins were psychotic and I loved it.

Wht more can you ask for!

There was a slight rush in a certain scene that i felt needed a bit more but other than that it was a gripping book 🙂
