What if no one really sees you?
What if you don’t want them to?

Ryder Jones typically spends her days and nights busting down doors to rescue innocent victims from a dangerous world most can’t fathom. But when an injury puts her out of commission, her boss gives her a new and anxiety-provoking 24-hour protection detail for a charming athlete with a target on his back.

Cole Matthews’s sole focus is winning football games. That is, until a stalker threatens his life. But it’s his sullen, highly trained blonde bodyguard—and new roommate—who’s turning his regimented life upside down. As Cole and Ryder dig into who has a vendetta against him, their forced proximity leads to an undeniable attraction neither has experienced before.

A relationship would never work—Ryder operates in the dark, and Cole commands the spotlight. When their opposite worlds collide and the stalker closes in, Ryder must admit that Cole is more than an assignment. She’ll do anything to protect him, even if it’s from herself. I am so obsessed with this story!

It was such a thrill to finally get Cole’s story after seeing him in her other books. Seeing him as a grown man, so patient and sweet with Ryder, just made me melt. The dynamic here is everything, too. It is a total flip on the classic bodyguard trope, and watching Ryder—this incredibly tough, capable woman—protect him while he offers her such tender, unwavering support was magic. Their connection is pure, emotional, and so incredibly healing to watch unfold.

The way this book handles heavy themes like trauma and recovery is just so powerful and handled with such care. I felt so much for Ryder on her journey to healing, and even though the story goes to some darker places, it is ultimately a story about hope, redemption, and finding your person. The found family aspect is just the cherry on top. I was a puddle of feelings by the time I ended the book.

I am already impatiently waiting to see what happens next for the rest of the series.

My ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Can’t wait for the other sisters’ stories and more background about what happened in Detroit with Cole’s friend. Also hoping TJ gets a HEA.

Thank you so much Stacy for the chance to read this early through your traveling ARC program.

Stacy is one of my favorite authors. Her book I Got You was my favorite read of 2024 and I’m still so obsessed with it and talk about it all the time. I was so excited for this book and then even more excited when I realized this book is Cole’s story!!! (Cole is Maggie’s younger brother in I Got You). This story consumed me once I started it. Cole was just amazing as I remembered from I Got You. I loved seeing him in his adult life. He was so gracious and patient with Ryder. I annotated so many things he said to her that were just so sweet and tender. And Ryder 😭 Stacy does such a phenomenal job with her story and displaying her growth and her journey to realizing her worth and letting other people in. Ryder has been through some of the worst things imaginable. I admired her so stinking much. She was so tough and worked so hard to bring a little light to the darkness others were facing.

I adore all of these Lost Sisters. Their bond is beautiful and I loved how they were there for each other and spoke truth and wisdom to one another. I can’t wait for each girl’s story (and to see if my guesses are correct).

This story does deal with some tougher themes and topics. Please be sure to check the content warnings. One of those topics is human trafficking. And I think Stacy does a phenomenal job of displaying the reality of it without being too explicit in detail. This story really truly moved me and I think a lot of people will feel the same.

My thoughts:
Wow! That’s all I can say. This book was so beautiful and emotional. This touched on such hard topics in a way that brings the characters struggles to light while also respecting everything they’ve gone through.
Cole and Ryder have been through so much and I knew within the first few chapters that this was gonna be an emotionally moving book.
I loved seeing Cole’s story. He was first seen in I Got You and we didn’t see much of him and his struggles, but this book showed everything he was going through that he didn’t show at first.
Ryder’s life and journey. Man. I don’t know if I have words for her strength. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain she faced and still does. I cried for her and hurt for her many times. This story was so beautiful and proof that hope and healing is possible in the pain.
Cole and Ryder were exactly what each other needed. Cole has so much love to give and knew how to stay for Ryder, even when she pushed him away. The most beautiful part about their love is how they stay by each other in the pain and hardships and continue to support and love each other through everything.
I would absolutely recommend this book, but I will say that it touches on hard topics. While it is an absolutely beautiful book and will have me thinking about it for quite a while, there’s a lot of emotions and hard topics. These characters and their situations were written so well and respectfully.

Tropes:
🖤opposites attract
🖤she’s his bodyguard
🖤touch him and d!e
🖤he falls first
🖤forced proximity
🖤emotional healing
🖤NFL quarterback x bodyguard
🖤she only feels safe with him

Wow, what a story! I love a good bodyguard romance, but this was the first time I'd read one where SHE was the bodyguard and HE was the one in need of protection. This added a really unique dynamic to Ryder and Cole's story... but I loved that though he respected her strength and capability, he was also equally protective of her as well. And the more we learn about her history, we see that he's exactly what she needs. This story isn't an easy one, touching on topics of sex trafficking and abuse, but doing so in a way that didn't sugarcoat anything but also didn't lay out all the graphic details on the page either. We see that pain and trauma, but we're not left in the darkness of it. It still might not be an easy one, but I think it's a story that is important to tell. The romance was tender and healing, a perfect slow burn with just the right amount of suspense... all with that sense of found family that Stacy Williams does so beautifully. If you love an emotional romance that will break your heart, but leave you with a sense of healing, this is one not to be missed.

Hard to Love is a closed-door romance with a fade to black moment and strong language (to include multiple f-words).

Oh man, this one is gritty and dark and so stinkin' beautiful. Stacy did an absolutely phenomenal job with a heartbreaking topic. She took such great care with the portrayal of sexual assualt and many of the things it can entail. Even though this was a tough one to read, it resonated so very much with me. It's for sure in my top five for the year so far.

Content warnings: This book does have a LOT of language. I do believe it's essential and true to the story. There are also many mentions of human trafficking, particularly of children. Proceed with caution, but know that the author was highly sensitive and seemingly accurate in her portrayal of this topic.

Um…whoa…. This was very good. Does have some language. Has a ton of trigger topics. And one fade to black scene. But oh so good. Heavy, but redemptive. Kinda sorry I found it so soon after publishing because I know I’m gonna have to wait a while to read the next one.

•My Thoughts•
This was an absolutely beautiful story of redemption and love. Stacy does a phenomenal job of dealing with heavy trauma and the dark places of our world without being super detailed. Ryder, our FMC, is skilled and competent and a complete bad*ss. Shes a hero and I was so intrigued by the dynamic of her being HIS body guard. I loved the realistic, slow slide of their relationship and how we, the reader, got to be a part of all of the little moments. My heart absolutely broke for Ryder as I learned her background and her heart. I loved her journey as she navigates her trauma . I loved Cole, his kindness and patience were unmatched! The romantic suspense element added a fun action dynamic. The found family was one of my very favorite parts and I loved their dynamic and the way they hoped and loved each other. This was a story of hope and love…yes, romantic love but also so much more! I finished this story just a puddle of so many feelings. I can’t wait to see what Stacy does with the rest of the Lost Girls.

4⭐️ .5🌶️ ARC REVIEW: 📖 HARD TO LOVE 📖 by Stacy Williams ✨ This is book 1 in the Lost Girls series. NFL star Cole has a stalker, so highly-trained operative Ryder is assigned to be his 24-7 protection and roommate. Ryder has been through unimaginable trauma but uses the pain of her past to fight for the innocent. She doesn’t feel worthy of love, so she doesn’t let anyone get close. Cole is gentle and patient with her, breaking down her defenses little by little. He doesn’t push her, though. He becomes her safe space. She thinks she’s dark and he’s light—that he’s beautiful and good, and how could she expose him to her darkness. Cole is in awe of her and thinks she’s the bravest person he’s ever met. He proves to her that no matter what she tells him of her past, he’s not going anywhere, and it’s ok to let herself be loved, that she’s deserving of good things. This is a raw, emotional read with depth - about discovering self-worth and accepting love. I fell in love with all of the side characters, too, and am excited to read the next books in this new series.

Cole is entirely focused on football but he is tired of trying to measure up. He doesn’t feel seen because everyone expects greatness, for him to be his NFL legend dad. The world doesn’t get to see the real Cole. He keeps himself closed off and isolated.

She detests vulnerability in herself, and someone touching her terrifies her. But Cole is safe - she doesn’t need to protect herself from him. Her body doesn’t feel like her own, so when she’s uncomfortable, her defenses go up and she pulls away. She likes how he makes her feel but also isn’t sure she’s allowed to like it. She doesn’t allow herself to want him to touch her.

She knows there’s something between them but he tells her that he won’t make the move because he won’t take the choice from her, that she will have to make the move or give him permission. She thinks she’s used and damaged, and that she never will be the kind of woman he deserves. He tells her he isn’t going anywhere, no matter what she decides to share with him. She thinks she’s unworthy but he thinks she’s the most good, empathetic person he’s met.

He wants to be her comfort and safe place. His tender patience awakens dangerous feelings inside her. She has to stop punishing herself, and give herself permission to be happy. She’s a survivor but she doesn’t know how to be brave enough to let herself be loved. He wants to be there for her - carrying the load when it’s heavy. He thinks she’s the bravest person he’s ever known. He wants to know her - the real her behind the badass exterior.

❤️ Forehead kisses 💋
❤️ He hugs her and she likes it
❤️ He holds her hand while driving

Hard to Love is a beautiful novel about what existing after significant trauma looks like. It is well written and gets so much right.

Ryder Jones is used to working dangerous rescue operations far from the public eye, but after an injury temporarily sidelines her, she’s assigned to protect professional football player Cole Matthews after he becomes the target of a stalker. As Ryder and Cole are forced into close quarters while trying to uncover who is threatening him, the two begin to develop feelings for each other despite the massive differences between their lives and personalities.

The CPTSD aftermath is both well written and spot on from the nightmares to everything being fine until it's not to the internal war between what you want and what your body will let you have. I really enjoyed The Flatshare for its CPTSD portrayal. Hard to Love goes much further in this direction and makes it a central pillar of the story. It takes a much more direct approach that I found rather refreshing.

Cole is such a wonderful character. Despite not having a reference point for Ryder's life or really being able to understand, he is unwaveringly supportive. He asks what she needs and listens. He comforts her in the ways she is ready to let him. He sees hints of what she's been through early on and both creates space for her to feel safer while also not assuming or taking away her autonomy and control.

My only real complaint about the book is also one of the things I think it did well. Stacy Williams intentionally doesn’t make Ryder talk about her trauma. I think this is a key strength and a really cool thing about this book. Usually in fiction, we don't get to do that because we need to know what the character went through for the plot to make sense. That's also why it wasn't entirely ideal here. We only find out the details of what Ryder has been through very late in the book. For most of the story, we're guessing. We're seeing her reactions largely from her perspective and we don't know exactly why she's reacting that way or what memories are being triggered. While I deeply respect and appreciate what Stacy Williams was trying to do here by waiting until Ryder was ready to share things with the reader, I don't think she fully nailed the execution. I see the potential for it to work and it didn't stop me from enjoying this book immensely, but I do think it kept the story from being as impactful as it could have been and at times made me feel like I was in the dark and guessing. I think even tiny hints would have helped ground our understanding more.

I loved just about every part of this book. I initially rated it 5 stars but decided 4 was more in line with my other ratings once the buzz of reading it wore off a bit. I read it in basically a single sitting. It was an extremely compelling read. I highly recommend it. That said, while it has a lot of brilliant elements and was very enjoyable, it didn't quite come together with that overall "wow" factor that I reserve for 5 star reads.

I listened to the audiobook and Willem Bloom and Isabelle Ruther did a great job bringing Ryder and Cole's voices to life. They nailed Ryder's grit and attunement and Cole's sensitivity and care.

Hard to Love was a very enjoyable read. I recommend it for folks with CPTSD who'd like some on-point representation in their romance books, especially those with sexual trauma. I also recommend it for folks who enjoy emotionally attuned romance and are willing to engage with more difficult topics. I didn't find Hard to Love to be "heavy," but its themes are big and important ones. While I'd enjoy reading this on the beach, it's not the "beach read" type of book. I highly recommend it. I'm looking forward to the future books in this series.

Hard to Love completely shattered me in the most beautiful way 🖤😭 This story delivers romance, healing, suspense, found family, and emotional depth in such a powerful and thoughtful way that I finished feeling emotionally wrecked and completely full of love at the same time.

Ryder is genuinely one of the strongest FMCs I’ve read in a long time 👏🖤 She’s highly trained, fiercely capable, and absolutely intimidating when she needs to be — but underneath all of that strength is a woman carrying unimaginable trauma. Watching Ryder work as Cole’s bodyguard instantly hooked me because I loved seeing the protective roles reversed for once 🔥 Seeing HER protect HIM added such a refreshing dynamic to the romance.

What made this story stand out so much was how carefully Stacy handled difficult topics like human trafficking. The book never relied on graphic shock value to show the horrors these survivors experienced. Instead, the focus stayed on the emotional aftermath, survival, healing, and the people fighting to help victims reclaim their lives ❤️‍🩹 That human-centered approach made everything hit even harder emotionally.

And Cole??? 🥹🏈 I adored this man. His patience, kindness, and quiet support toward Ryder made me melt. He never tried to “fix” her trauma or rush her healing. Instead, he met her exactly where she was emotionally and gave her space to trust him at her own pace. Their relationship developed slowly and naturally, making every small moment between them feel incredibly meaningful.

The yearning in this book was SO GOOD 😩❤️ The lingering looks, emotional vulnerability, growing trust, and tiny moments of comfort built such a believable connection between Ryder and Cole. Their romance felt tender, realistic, and deeply earned, especially considering everything Ryder had survived.

I also loved the suspense woven throughout the story 🔎 Between Ryder trying to protect Cole from an unknown threat while simultaneously working alongside her found family to rescue trafficking victims, there was always tension keeping the story moving. The balance between action, emotional healing, and romance was done beautifully.

And speaking of found family… that might honestly have been one of my favorite parts 🥹✨ The bond between Ryder and the other girls was so heartfelt and comforting. You could feel the loyalty, protection, and unconditional love they had for one another. Stacy really captured how healing it can be to find people who truly see and support you after surviving darkness.

The audiobook experience made everything even more emotional for me too 🎧 The narrators fit Ryder and Cole perfectly, especially during the heavier emotional scenes. Ryder’s vulnerable moments hit incredibly hard through the female narrator’s performance, and listening while reading honestly made me feel even more immersed in the story.

Hard to Love is so much more than just a romance novel ❤️ It’s a story about survival, hope, healing, trust, and learning that love can still exist after unimaginable pain. Ryder and Cole completely own my heart, and I’m already desperate for more stories from the Lost Girls world.

Hard to Love was my first experience with this author’s work, and the intriguing blurb immediately drew me in. While bodyguard romances are a popular trope, this story puts a refreshing spin on the formula by making the heroine Ryder, the protector, bringing a unique dynamic to the story and setting it apart from similar romances when she is assigned to guard professional football player Cole Matthews after he becomes the target of a stalker. While personal protection isn’t usually part of Ryder’s job, after a recent injury leaves her temporarily sidelined from her usual field of expertise, her boss assigns her to provide around-the-clock protection for Cole.

What I loved most was Ryder’s character. Strong, resilient, and fiercely independent. it was clear that she carried deep emotional scars and had endured significant trauma in her past but the full extent of what she’d endured isn’t revealed until much later in the story. Rather than allowing her experiences to define or weaken her, she has channelled it, becoming a formidable woman who fights for others. Her work usually involves rescuing victims of human trafficking, making her temporary assignment protecting Cole feel very different from her usual responsibilities. Despite her strength, at first, Ryder keeps Cole at arm’s length, convinced she isn’t worthy of love which creates an emotional barrier between them. In comparison Cole’s patience and understanding made him an easy character to root for. Although it couldn’t have been easy for him, he recognises Ryder’s reluctance to open up and doesn’t push her for answers, instead allowing her to set the pace and share her story when she was ready. This lets their relationship develop gradually and creating a satisfying slow-burn romance built on trust and mutual respect.

The suspense element is woven throughout the story, serving as both the catalyst for their relationship and providing a constant undercurrent of building tension. While the romance is very much a slow burn, the overall pacing of the story is strong and engaging, balancing the suspense and emotional development, and holding my attention from start to finish. If you’re a fan of books that explores darker themes without being overly graphic, with a role-reversal bodyguard dynamic, compelling characters, strong found-family themes, and beautifully written slow-burn relationship, then Hard to Love is definitely worth picking up.

This book completely stole my heart.

I went into Hard to Love expecting a romantic suspense with a football player and his bodyguard, and while it absolutely delivers on that, it became so much more than that for me.

Ryder and Cole were everything.

Ryder is one of those characters who breaks your heart and inspires you at the same time. What she survived could have defined her, but instead she chose to fight for others. Watching her navigate her trauma while slowly learning to trust and let people in felt incredibly authentic and emotional.

And Cole?

Can we please talk about Cole?

I am such a sucker for gentle, patient, emotionally mature men, and Cole might be one of my favorites. He never tries to force Ryder to be anything other than who she is. He listens. He waits. He supports. He understands that healing isn't linear, and the way he showed up for Ryder over and over again absolutely melted me.

Their relationship felt earned. No dramatic insta-love. No magical healing through romance. Just two people slowly building trust, friendship, and something deeper.

I also loved the sports element. As someone who enjoys sports romance, I thought Stacy Williams balanced Cole's NFL career perfectly with the suspense and emotional aspects of the story.

And the found family? Give it to me every single time. The relationships between Ryder and the other women were some of my favorite parts of the book. They felt like sisters forged through survival, and I already know I'll be picking up the rest of this series because I need all of their stories.

I listened to the audiobook and absolutely loved the narration. Willem Bloom and Isabelle Ruther brought so much emotion to these characters and made an already powerful story even more immersive.

Stacy Williams has such a beautiful writing style. She tackles incredibly difficult subjects with compassion, sensitivity, and hope while never losing sight of the humanity of her characters.

This book is emotional, hopeful, healing, and full of heart.

If you love:

🏈 Sports romance
🛡️ Bodyguard romance
❤️ Trauma healing & emotional growth
👭 Found family

then you need to pick this one up.

Thank you Stacy Williams for the ARC of Hard to Love-a book that I hope is the start of a new series.

Before I review, I highly recommend reading I Got You–the first in the Abandoned Brothers series. In this book, you will meet Maggie who is the sister to Cole Matthews–the MMC of Hard to Love. (And really, go and read anything Stacy Williams has written)

This book is Ryder and Cole’s beautiful story.
Is it a romance novel? Yes.
Are there typical romance events in the novel? Yes.
Can readers expect some amazing yearning? Yes.
Is our FMC the bodyguard? Oh yes she is!

But…

Hard to Love is so much more than that. Williams expertly weaves a bodyguard/NFL star situation, which alone would be enough to draw me to the story, with a much more important issue–human trafficking.

If a straight-forward romance isn’t your thing, never fear. Williams adds in the suspense of trying to figure out who is after Cole while ALSO tackling the difficult subject of human trafficking. In addition to her bodyguard duties, Ryder, and her found family, work to save as many victims as possible. I was concerned about how detailed she would write some of the scenes for this type of issue–especially after reading the author’s notes at the start of the book, but Williams was able to convey the severity and horrific nature of trafficking without having to create lengthy graphic descriptions. Instead she focuses on the human element with the focus on those affected by it rather than the actions of the perpetrators. She also spends time showing how supporters can help those people as well.

As a reader, I appreciated that facet of her storytelling.

Make no mistake, the tender relationship between Cole and Ryder does often take center stage and expect a realistic portrayal of the time line of a relationship with someone who struggles with trauma. I doubt anyone will finish that book and not be in love with Cole and Ryder and how they warm to one another and truly find their best selves with one another.

William has also left breadcrumbs for what I hope become a series that explores each of her found sisters. The potential is exciting to consider.

Thank you Stacy Williams for a wonderful start to a new story.

Thanks to NetGalley and Tantor Media for the ALC of Hard To Love by Stacy Williams, narrated by Willem Bloom and Isabelle Ruther. Thanks to Grey's Promotions for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have read Stacy Williams before and enjoyed her books, and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. This series centers on individuals who have experienced horrific trauma at the hands of others. This book and series do not focus on the traumatic events, but rather the strength the victims have and their ability to overcome and live a good life, despite everyone and everything that tried to keep them shut down.

The FMC is in her mid-twenties, which I didn’t like, and I let my mind take over and believe that she was in her late 30s at the youngest because, from my experience as a law enforcement officer and a trauma counselor, I just couldn’t expect a kid to handle things the way the FMC did. Honestly, that was my only complaint regarding the story. I thought the author handled the situations with delicacy and made the romance feel real. The book felt authentic, which made for a more enjoyable experience. This book shows that not only are you unable to judge people or know what they have been through by looking at them, but that they can recover from whatever has broken them. I loved this book, and the use of dual POV added to the slow build of the romance and the suspense as well. I enjoyed the found family aspect of this book as well.

I thought the audiobook was good, and I found both narrators to be easy to listen to, and I felt their voices aligned with the characters the author had created. I loved that it was dual narration, and this added to the enjoyment of the book as well. My only complaint regarding the audiobook is that Isabelle Ruther’s portions were louder than the portions read by Willem Bloom, so much so that I have to keep turning the volume up and down as their chapters alternated.

I can confidently recommend this book and audiobook.

The book contains: foul language, mention of sex trafficking (occurred in the past – NO DETAILS, just mention of it), talk of sex in the epilogue – kisses only in the rest of the book.

I’m not sure I have the words to adequately express how much I love this story. It is moving, sobering, heartbreaking, inspiring, and so achingly beautiful. Stacy does an incredible job navigating the heavier topics without shying away from their realities.

I have loved Cole Matthews since meeting him, and this book made me love him even more. He is kind, thoughtful, and the absolute sweetest. I couldn’t help smiling every time he got protective of his Protective Agent. But it was his gentleness, tender care, and restraint that really made me melt. I loved the patient and respectful way he allowed Ryder to get comfortable with him. The way he slowly became her safe place was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read. I love the way Cole fights for her, his willingness to face the darkness with her, and the fact that he never gives up on her.

Ryder is a picture of strength and resilience. The things she has seen and endured are unimaginable. I love how she wanted to protect Cole, not just from the stalker, but from the darkness. The emotional scars she carried felt so real, raw, and heartbreaking. The courage she showed in facing them, and the way Cole’s love helped her heal, left me speechless.

I loved the romantic suspense aspect of the story. Stacy kept me guessing until the very end. I am completely invested in Ryder’s sisters and can’t wait to read their stories. Getting to see Maggie and Nick (aka Chip) again was just icing on the cake. I’m thrilled he is still part of the family and, hopefully, this series. I will forever love this family.

I also had the opportunity to experience Hard to Love on audio, and it was wonderful. Willem Bloom and Isabelle Ruther were perfectly cast as Cole and Ryder. I was captivated from the moment I pressed play. They captured the depth, emotion, and vulnerability of the story so well. I highly recommend this one for audiobook readers.

If you enjoy protective MCs, hard-fought HEAs, and gritty romances that don’t shy away from difficult topics, add this one to your TBR.

Note: This book does contain strong language. I felt it was true to the story, but I understand it won’t be for every reader. Be sure to check the content warnings.

I think I just found my favourite book of 2026.

THE BOOK OF THE YEAR 2026 GOES TO THIS BOOK.

There is so much comfort in this author's books that you always crave for more. I have read three of her books now, and she just has this power to blur the lines between fiction and reality.

This book wrapped me in a warm cocoon of found family, love, strength, courage, and friendship.

The best thing about this book, and honestly all of the author's books, is the found family. People who are completely different from each other, perfectly imperfect in their own ways, come together and create a little family of their own where blood doesn't define their relationship.

The chosen family. 🩷

I am a huge Mariana Zapata fan, and I haven't read many authors who come close to her when it comes to the raw emotions, the slow burn, and the depth of the relationships. But after reading three of this author's books, I can proudly say that she comes very close to Zapata.

I just love Cole and Matthew's family, and it warmed my heart to see Maggie, Shane, and the kids make a cameo.

And Cole...

I absolutely loved him.

I loved how patient and understanding he was. She had been disappointed by so many people and had never truly trusted anyone, but he gave her a reason to trust again.

Even when she took two steps back, he patiently waited for her. He was always there for her.

A stubborn heart meets a patient one.

He is the absolute greenest shade of a green flag, and I love him so much.

The book also has a mystery subplot, and it was so gripping while being perfectly balanced. It never took over the romance completely, but it also never faded into the background just for the sake of the love story.

I actually guessed the main culprit after just a few chapters, and when the reveal finally happened, I was literally yelling,

"I KNEW IT!"

I can't wait to read more books in this series, if there are more. I already have a feeling about who the next couples might be, and I am so excited to read their stories.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of Hard to Love (Lost Girls #1) by Stacy Williams from NetGalley. Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised; it is a beautifully written and emotional contemporary suspense romance novel. This was my first experience with Stacy Williams' work, and it certainly did not disappoint.
The story follows Ryder Jones, a bodyguard assigned to protect Cole Matthews, a high-profile NFL player facing death threats. Ryder is a survivor of significant trauma, including trafficking and physical abuse, which has left her with both physical scars and a sensory aversion to touch. To maintain their cover as a couple at an upcoming event without alerting the antagonist, Ryder and Cole must practice physical proximity so she can manage her reactions. Cole proves to be exceptionally patient and respectful of her boundaries, and as they spend time together, Ryder begins to experience unfamiliar romantic feelings. Despite her past, Ryder is a formidable professional who is deeply committed to her work. The novel effectively explores themes of found family and utilizes the forced proximity trope as the two live together during the assignment.
Stacy Williams handles Ryder's trauma with significant care and evident research, portraying these sensitive topics accurately and respectfully. Potential readers should be aware of triggers involving trafficking, as well as sexual and physical abuse, though Williams manages these themes skillfully. Cole was a particular highlight for me; his tenderness, patience, and unwavering respect for Ryder's boundaries made him a truly compelling character.
While the narrative takes some time to build momentum due to a slightly slow start, the eventual payoff is well worth the wait. This is a slow-burn romance where the more intimate moments occur off-page.
I highly recommend this book, it is a 4 star-read for me.

5/5🌟

Wow. I sit here with tears just rolling down my cheeks. This is a beautiful story of love. There is so much darkness in the world and this is a story worth telling. My goodness. I truly hope that the author writes more books in this world. The found family that we meet here is wonderful and begging for more stories to be told. But first, this one. Ryder and Cole… what an amazing story of hope and love. Ryder is such a bada$$ and Cole is the golden retriever that dreams are made of. The way that ptsd and trauma are handled in this story is absolutely incredible. The way Ryder pushes anyone away that might love her because she doesn’t love herself is such a hard truth. I’m so glad that there isn’t any open door spice in this book, it’s absolutely perfect the way it is. 🫑
Do check your TW before diving in as there is mention of several difficult subjects. However the author handles these in such a beautiful and careful way. Thank you so much to the author and to Grey’s Promotions for the eARC. This voluntary review is my honest thoughts and opinions about the book.
I highly recommend this book! It is written in such a heartwarming and beautiful way!

“I don’t know much, but I know darkness cowers at even a flicker of light.”

He takes a small step closer. “Tell me what to do. . .or not do.”

“I don’t want you to cover anything up. Not from me. Not for them. I understand why you did, and I appreciate it, but. . . ” There it is—my truth. I don’t want her to hide from me, and it scares the absolute sh*t out of me.

“But he’s been loved deeply. He comes from beauty and goodness. I come from the fiery depths of hell.”

“Safe isn’t a place I’ve ever been.”

“When you crack the door and let the light in, whether it’s to one or thousands, that darkness, that shame, it no longer holds the power.”

Thanks to Grey’s Promotions and Stacy Williams for the ARC. All opinions are my own in the following ARC Review.

Genres: Romantic Suspense, Football Romance
Tropes: Bodyguard/Football Player, Forced Proximity, Hurt/Comfort, Roommates/Friends To Lovers, Cinnamon Roll Hero, Strong Heroine, Opposites Attract, Slow Burn, Touch Him and Die, Found Family
MC: Ryder (FMC), Cole (MMC)
Setting: Miami
Triggers: reference to past abuse (drugs, physical, sexual); reference to parental deaths
Epilogue: Yes

Thoughts: This was my first time reading a Stacy Williams book, and she certainly delivered. This story will take you through every emotion on the spectrum. The main characters come from very different worlds, but both carry their own traumas, which allows them to truly understand one another. I loved Cole so much. He was incredibly patient and compassionate toward Ryder, making him an amazing MMC and the perfect hero for her. Ryder was an incredibly strong heroine, both physically and mentally, but her past understandably caused her to be guarded and closed off. She needed someone like Cole, who was strong enough to help carry her burdens, while giving her the space and support she needed to heal. They truly seemed to be each other’s person, able to be the other’s strength when needed while also finding complete comfort and peace in one another’s presence. I was glad Ryder and Cole took a chance at a relationship, and thought it was cool that her adoptive father recognized Cole would be a potential good match for her. Additionally, I really enjoyed all of the side characters, especially Ryder’s family, and I hope they each get their own stories. They have an interesting, but clearly loving dynamic. I know Ryder and Cole talked about their future, but I am curious to see if he stays with his current team after all the drama.

I am tired with romance books that are 400+ pages long or audiobooks that last more than 10h (more than 12 is criminal) but… I requested this ALC without checking page count/audio length and you know what? I have zero regrets!!!

This was a beautiful contemporary romance with depth, trauma healing and suspense element that did NOT give me anxiety (yay!).
I was tired with the length just a little bit (it’s totally a me thing) but I got instantly invested in the whole found family and will be looking out for the next release, page count be damned.
Interesting storyline, good writing, well written characters, well paced. As long as you don’t mind the suspense element and characters with traumatic past, go read/listen to this book.

🎶 hey Siri, play Grenade by Bruno Mars 🎶
(ok, not the whole song, but cause it’s Bruno and because of this particular line: “I'd catch a grenade for ya” 👀)

What to expect:
-NFL player
-she’s his bodyguard
-she has very traumatic past (it’s more of a backstory, not big on-page part so be aware of it but don’t be scared)
-forced proximity
-romantic suspense
-slow burn
-no spice
-touch HIM and die
-he’s the greenest flag of all green flags
-found family
-perfectly paced trauma healing !!! not rushed, the pace was very fitting considering Ryder’s past !

🎧🎧🎧
Audio duration: almost 14h
Listening speed: 2.0x which is my usual speed, brief moments with 2.5x speed (if it wasn’t through NetGalley I would probably settle on 2.2-2.3 for the whole thing)
Narrated in dual narration by Isabelle Ruther and Willem Bloom
I have no notes for the audio performance and production. It was simply very good. I only had the ALC, without ebook to do immersive reading, but I had no problems understanding the dialogues or even text messages. Both narrators did amazing job!

Big thanks to RBmedia and NetGalley for the ALC

I've never read a romance like this one, despite my voracious reading. Annnd for something with a trigger warning, this is the most un-triggering thing I've read.

So it's not your usual romance, even though romantic tension is the primary storyline of the book. It's about a badass survivor who works as a private detective/contractor rescuing people from harrowing situations. I absolutely love that much of the badassery happens "on page" but none of the trauma. So you'll know she's going in for a rescue and see victims post-rescue, but the focus is on the relationships and life outside that action. The focus is all about her "benched for an injury" job providing protection detail for a star football player.

Honestly, despite the backdrop, this reads to me as a story of triumph and survival. It doesn't focus on any of the initial trauma and drama, but current life with some side effects from the historical drama, and you watch her gradually overcome one hurdle after another. It's really inspiring to see multiple people stitching their lives back together, developing new and supportive relationships, and ultimately moving on with life in the most meaningful and productive ways possible. Innnnncluding the connection with the football player, the mystery of his stalker (complete with a couple of red herrings), and the development of their relationship over time. This story is very high on sweet, supportive connection, and very low on spice (though there's a bit of that in the epilogue). Such a unique take for a romance, and a powerful and important lens for a topic that's often glamorized in a harmful way. This was a really fun and gratifying read.

NOTE: I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for a review expressing my personal opinions.

💔 Broken Pieces, Beautifully Put Together 💔

Wow. Just wow.

Hard to Love by Stacy Williams is one of those books that stays with you long after you turn the final page. While it's a romance, it's not romance in the traditional sense. It's a suspenseful, emotional journey about two broken people trying to navigate their pasts, their present struggles, and the possibility of something more.

I absolutely loved the FMC. She's strong, resilient, and carrying wounds she's desperately trying to overcome. Just when I thought I understood her story, another layer was revealed, and I realized there was so much more beneath the surface.

As someone with a degree in psychology, I especially appreciated how deeply the author explored the minds and emotions of both the FMC and MMC. Their struggles, reactions, and growth felt authentic, and I found myself fully invested in their healing journey. You don't just read about their emotions—you experience them with them.

This story is packed with depth, meaning, and perspective. There are stories within the story that offer hope and remind us that not everything is as it first appears. Sometimes you need to look from another angle to see the full picture.

Be sure to check trigger warnings before diving in, as there are several difficult topics addressed throughout the book.

This book took me through the entire gamut of emotions. Half the time I wasn't sure what I was supposed to feel—and that's exactly what made it so powerful. I couldn't put it down. It was constantly "just one more chapter"... until suddenly I was at the end.

If you enjoy emotional suspense, complex characters, and stories about broken puzzle pieces finding where they belong, this one is worth picking up.

Considering I was hit in the feels by the dedication and completely gripped by the first chapter, it’s safe to say this book is a complete YES from me!! I devoured this book in less than 24 hours and I don’t think I can adequately put words to my thoughts.

Ryder, our FMC, is a complete bad*ss. She’s strong, competent, and SHE is the bodyguard protecting our MMC. Ryder is also coming from an unimaginable past and Stacy handled her story through growth and healing in a way that felt so real and humanizing. Cole, our MMC, is equally as protective, he’s patient, and speaks in a tender way that you can’t help falling for. I loved the way the story with these two played out. It was slow, but tangible. The little wise cracks at each other were fun and the touch of mystery and suspense slowly revealing more kept me beyond invested.

I adore the whole group of Lost Sisters. They are there for each other in unique ways and aren’t afraid to have the hard conversations to send each other in the direction they need to go. I can’t wait to find out more about each of these characters!! Overall, I applaud Stacy for the way she wove the trauma into the story and didn’t shy away with a sugar coating.

Not only did I find this story enjoyable, I found it important. The strength, healing, and grace shown to the topics and the healing journey was done phenomenally well. Thank you to Grey’s Promotions and author Stacy Williams for this e-arc! All opinions are my own.

*Check the trigger warnings and take care of yourself friends!! I found this book healing in a way I didn’t even know I was looking for but that doesn’t mean you’ll have the same experience!

4.5 Stars rounded up!

Thank you to Tantor audio for the ALC and the author for letting me participating with a traveling arc! :)

Title: Hard to Love
Author: Stacy Williams
Format: immersive (audio + physical)
Publication Date: June 2, 2026-get your library holds + preorders in now!

When I saw an oppertunity to get a traveling arc, I decided to shoot my shot because it seemed like such a fun idea and it was!! I loved getting to annotate and see what stuck out to other readers as well!

This was my first book by Stacy, and I am so glad to have entered the world of her writing!!

Both Jenah and Taylor have raved about her writing and I can see why!

I love how romance is balanced with depths of hardships and trauma along with suspense. I feel if you like Catherine Cowles + childhood trama to work through this is the book for you!!!

I love love loved Ryder -she was passionate and cared so deeply. She let her wounds propel her to helping others who have walked through similar pain. Cole was the sweetest cinnamon roll ever in the history of ever. If you look up the definition of gentle you will find Cole. I literally M E L T E D.

Adding the audio to make it immersive was so nice! I felt like the narrators both captured the emotions and feelings well to expand the story even more!!

MAGGIE-I loved her and need to dig into Stacy's backlist to see if she has a story because she stole my heart as Cole's sister!!

The found family just filled my heart with this one!!

Thank you so much!!!

This is Book 1 of the Lost Girls series. I really enjoyed it & look forward to the rest of the series!! I love the premise - that the girls have been rescued & have traumatic pasts, and use their lives to help rescue & help others. I love their "found family" and how special of a relationship they all have together.

I loved the characters - Ryder & Cole, as well as the supporting characters. I love the adoptive "parents" Ryder has & how they didn't give up on her.

Even though Cole & Ryder aren't coming from the same backgrounds & pasts... they both have some trauma & issues haunting them... even though Cole is wealthy & a popular football QB, he is lonely and Ryder brings new life to his life. I love how patient Cole is with Ryder... even when he doesn't know what she's been through, he's relentlessly calm and patient & willing to take as long as needed to help her move forward.

The book is fast paced with good suspense & great plot twists. I really enjoyed the narrators & thought they did a great job.

Spice level: 2/5 - closed door romance - I appreciated what the author said at the beginning of the book, that she purposely kept any intimacy from the book to make it a safe place for everyone.

*romantic suspense
*he's a football player
*she's his bodyguard
*she has a past of trauma & abuse and helps/rescues others
*forced proximity
*workplace romance
*found family

Thank you to the author (Stacy Williams), publisher (Tantor Media), narrators & Netgalley for the ALC. All opinions are my own.

Another amazing book from this author that I just couldn't put down. It touches on some heavy, sensitive themes, so I’d highly recommend checking the trigger warnings before diving in.
The story is beautifully written to keep the actual horror behind closed doors, choosing instead to focus deeply on the aftermath. There are no graphic or brutal scenes, but it is still a deeply moving read.

Cole Matthews: A rising football star whose entire world revolves around the game. But when the threats start rolling in, he has to turn to a security firm for help, where he meets a total badass—Ryder Jones.
Ryder Jones: The absolute best in the business. She’s blunt, hyper-focused, takes absolutely no BS, and fights tirelessly for herself and a better world. Her own past is dark, tragic, and the kind of trauma that not everyone makes it out of alive.

As always, the author’s writing is deeply moving, gripping you right by the heartstrings and never letting go. The atmosphere was so masterfully built that I felt like I was standing right there in the pantry alongside Ryder, experiencing every single ounce of her horror, panic, frustration, anger, and fierce determination.

"Sometimes, fear warns us of danger ahead, and sometimes, it just holds us back. " - and Ryder just needs to trust Cole enough to let go of her fears.

And I was absolutely thrilled to get even a brief appearance from my all-time favorite couple, Maggie and Shane!
