What if no one really sees you?
What if you don’t want them to?

Ryder Jones typically spends her days and nights busting down doors to rescue innocent victims from a dangerous world most can’t fathom. But when an injury puts her out of commission, her boss gives her a new and anxiety-provoking 24-hour protection detail for a charming athlete with a target on his back.

Cole Matthews’s sole focus is winning football games. That is, until a stalker threatens his life. But it’s his sullen, highly trained blonde bodyguard—and new roommate—who’s turning his regimented life upside down. As Cole and Ryder dig into who has a vendetta against him, their forced proximity leads to an undeniable attraction neither has experienced before.

A relationship would never work—Ryder operates in the dark, and Cole commands the spotlight. When their opposite worlds collide and the stalker closes in, Ryder must admit that Cole is more than an assignment. She’ll do anything to protect him, even if it’s from herself. But what if the one thing that needs rescuing. . . is her heart?

My ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Can’t wait for the other sisters’ stories and more background about what happened in Detroit with Cole’s friend. Also hoping TJ gets a HEA.

•My Thoughts•
This was an absolutely beautiful story of redemption and love. Stacy does a phenomenal job of dealing with heavy trauma and the dark places of our world without being super detailed. Ryder, our FMC, is skilled and competent and a complete bad*ss. Shes a hero and I was so intrigued by the dynamic of her being HIS body guard. I loved the realistic, slow slide of their relationship and how we, the reader, got to be a part of all of the little moments. My heart absolutely broke for Ryder as I learned her background and her heart. I loved her journey as she navigates her trauma . I loved Cole, his kindness and patience were unmatched! The romantic suspense element added a fun action dynamic. The found family was one of my very favorite parts and I loved their dynamic and the way they hoped and loved each other. This was a story of hope and love…yes, romantic love but also so much more! I finished this story just a puddle of so many feelings. I can’t wait to see what Stacy does with the rest of the Lost Girls.

Thank you to Stacy Williams and Grey’s Promotions for the early copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Hard to Love completely shattered me in the most beautiful way 🖤😭 This story delivers romance, healing, suspense, found family, and emotional depth in such a powerful and thoughtful way that I finished feeling emotionally wrecked and completely full of love at the same time.

Ryder is genuinely one of the strongest FMCs I’ve read in a long time 👏🖤 She’s highly trained, fiercely capable, and absolutely intimidating when she needs to be — but underneath all of that strength is a woman carrying unimaginable trauma. Watching Ryder work as Cole’s bodyguard instantly hooked me because I loved seeing the protective roles reversed for once 🔥 Seeing HER protect HIM added such a refreshing dynamic to the romance.

What made this story stand out so much was how carefully Stacy handled difficult topics like human trafficking. The book never relied on graphic shock value to show the horrors these survivors experienced. Instead, the focus stayed on the emotional aftermath, survival, healing, and the people fighting to help victims reclaim their lives ❤️‍🩹 That human-centered approach made everything hit even harder emotionally.

And Cole??? 🥹🏈 I adored this man. His patience, kindness, and quiet support toward Ryder made me melt. He never tried to “fix” her trauma or rush her healing. Instead, he met her exactly where she was emotionally and gave her space to trust him at her own pace. Their relationship developed slowly and naturally, making every small moment between them feel incredibly meaningful.

The yearning in this book was SO GOOD 😩❤️ The lingering looks, emotional vulnerability, growing trust, and tiny moments of comfort built such a believable connection between Ryder and Cole. Their romance felt tender, realistic, and deeply earned, especially considering everything Ryder had survived.

I also loved the suspense woven throughout the story 🔎 Between Ryder trying to protect Cole from an unknown threat while simultaneously working alongside her found family to rescue trafficking victims, there was always tension keeping the story moving. The balance between action, emotional healing, and romance was done beautifully.

And speaking of found family… that might honestly have been one of my favorite parts 🥹✨ The bond between Ryder and the other girls was so heartfelt and comforting. You could feel the loyalty, protection, and unconditional love they had for one another. Stacy really captured how healing it can be to find people who truly see and support you after surviving darkness.

The audiobook experience made everything even more emotional for me too 🎧 The narrators fit Ryder and Cole perfectly, especially during the heavier emotional scenes. Ryder’s vulnerable moments hit incredibly hard through the female narrator’s performance, and listening while reading honestly made me feel even more immersed in the story.

Hard to Love is so much more than just a romance novel ❤️ It’s a story about survival, hope, healing, trust, and learning that love can still exist after unimaginable pain. Ryder and Cole completely own my heart, and I’m already desperate for more stories from the Lost Girls world.

Thank you Stacy Williams for the ARC of Hard to Love-a book that I hope is the start of a new series.

Before I review, I highly recommend reading I Got You–the first in the Abandoned Brothers series. In this book, you will meet Maggie who is the sister to Cole Matthews–the MMC of Hard to Love. (And really, go and read anything Stacy Williams has written)

This book is Ryder and Cole’s beautiful story.
Is it a romance novel? Yes.
Are there typical romance events in the novel? Yes.
Can readers expect some amazing yearning? Yes.
Is our FMC the bodyguard? Oh yes she is!

But…

Hard to Love is so much more than that. Williams expertly weaves a bodyguard/NFL star situation, which alone would be enough to draw me to the story, with a much more important issue–human trafficking.

If a straight-forward romance isn’t your thing, never fear. Williams adds in the suspense of trying to figure out who is after Cole while ALSO tackling the difficult subject of human trafficking. In addition to her bodyguard duties, Ryder, and her found family, work to save as many victims as possible. I was concerned about how detailed she would write some of the scenes for this type of issue–especially after reading the author’s notes at the start of the book, but Williams was able to convey the severity and horrific nature of trafficking without having to create lengthy graphic descriptions. Instead she focuses on the human element with the focus on those affected by it rather than the actions of the perpetrators. She also spends time showing how supporters can help those people as well.

As a reader, I appreciated that facet of her storytelling.

Make no mistake, the tender relationship between Cole and Ryder does often take center stage and expect a realistic portrayal of the time line of a relationship with someone who struggles with trauma. I doubt anyone will finish that book and not be in love with Cole and Ryder and how they warm to one another and truly find their best selves with one another.

William has also left breadcrumbs for what I hope become a series that explores each of her found sisters. The potential is exciting to consider.

Thank you Stacy Williams for a wonderful start to a new story.

⭐️ 3 stars for the book
🎧 4 stars for the audiobook

This was definitely a really unique story and I actually really appreciated the direction it took. I think the writing itself was genuinely beautiful and very easy to sink into. The human trafficking aspect and protection detail storyline immediately interested me from the beginning, and I really liked how emotionally driven the relationship between Ryder and Cole was throughout the book.

Cole was honestly SUCH a sweet MMC. I loved how patient and understanding he was with Ryder, especially during the moments where she was struggling emotionally or reliving difficult memories. The scenes where he would just quietly stay with her instead of forcing comfort onto her were some of my favourites because they felt very soft and genuine. Their dynamic was very much golden retriever x black cat coded and I always eat that up 😭 I also really loved moments like the ball scene because I felt like those scenes allowed their relationship to breathe a little more outside of the heavier plot elements.

I also appreciated that Ryder wasn’t written as overly cold or “morally grey” just for the sake of it. Her guardedness made sense considering everything she had experienced, and I liked watching Cole slowly become someone safe for her. The romance itself felt comforting and emotional rather than overly dramatic which I enjoyed.

For me personally, I think the story slowed down a little after around the 30% mark. I was really invested at the beginning and while I still enjoyed the characters and writing throughout, the pacing became a little slower for my personal reading taste. But honestly I think this is one of those cases where it’s entirely subjective because I can absolutely understand why so many people loved this book.

The audiobook was also really well done. I thought both narrators suited the characters incredibly well and the emotional delivery especially during Ryder’s vulnerable moments added so much to the experience. The female narrator in particular really captured Ryder’s emotional state and made some scenes hit harder for me. I definitely think listening alongside reading helped immerse me even more into the story.

♡ Thank you to the NetGalley, S. L. Williams and Tantor Media for the eArc and audiobook opportunity ♡

I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of Hard to Love (Lost Girls #1) by Stacy Williams from NetGalley. Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised; it is a beautifully written and emotional contemporary suspense romance novel. This was my first experience with Stacy Williams' work, and it certainly did not disappoint.
The story follows Ryder Jones, a bodyguard assigned to protect Cole Matthews, a high-profile NFL player facing death threats. Ryder is a survivor of significant trauma, including trafficking and physical abuse, which has left her with both physical scars and a sensory aversion to touch. To maintain their cover as a couple at an upcoming event without alerting the antagonist, Ryder and Cole must practice physical proximity so she can manage her reactions. Cole proves to be exceptionally patient and respectful of her boundaries, and as they spend time together, Ryder begins to experience unfamiliar romantic feelings. Despite her past, Ryder is a formidable professional who is deeply committed to her work. The novel effectively explores themes of found family and utilizes the forced proximity trope as the two live together during the assignment.
Stacy Williams handles Ryder's trauma with significant care and evident research, portraying these sensitive topics accurately and respectfully. Potential readers should be aware of triggers involving trafficking, as well as sexual and physical abuse, though Williams manages these themes skillfully. Cole was a particular highlight for me; his tenderness, patience, and unwavering respect for Ryder's boundaries made him a truly compelling character.
While the narrative takes some time to build momentum due to a slightly slow start, the eventual payoff is well worth the wait. This is a slow-burn romance where the more intimate moments occur off-page.
I highly recommend this book, it is a 4 star-read for me.

Title: Hard to Love
Author: Stacy Williams
Format: immersive (audio + physical)
Publication Date: June 2, 2026-get your library holds + preorders in now!

When I saw an oppertunity to get a traveling arc, I decided to shoot my shot because it seemed like such a fun idea and it was!! I loved getting to annotate and see what stuck out to other readers as well!

This was my first book by Stacy, and I am so glad to have entered the world of her writing!!

Both Jenah and Taylor have raved about her writing and I can see why!

I love how romance is balanced with depths of hardships and trauma along with suspense. I feel if you like Catherine Cowles + childhood trama to work through this is the book for you!!!

I love love loved Ryder -she was passionate and cared so deeply. She let her wounds propel her to helping others who have walked through similar pain. Cole was the sweetest cinnamon roll ever in the history of ever. If you look up the definition of gentle you will find Cole. I literally M E L T E D.

Adding the audio to make it immersive was so nice! I felt like the narrators both captured the emotions and feelings well to expand the story even more!!

MAGGIE-I loved her and need to dig into Stacy's backlist to see if she has a story because she stole my heart as Cole's sister!!

The found family just filled my heart with this one!!

Thank you so much!!!

This is Book 1 of the Lost Girls series. I really enjoyed it & look forward to the rest of the series!! I love the premise - that the girls have been rescued & have traumatic pasts, and use their lives to help rescue & help others. I love their "found family" and how special of a relationship they all have together.

I loved the characters - Ryder & Cole, as well as the supporting characters. I love the adoptive "parents" Ryder has & how they didn't give up on her.

Even though Cole & Ryder aren't coming from the same backgrounds & pasts... they both have some trauma & issues haunting them... even though Cole is wealthy & a popular football QB, he is lonely and Ryder brings new life to his life. I love how patient Cole is with Ryder... even when he doesn't know what she's been through, he's relentlessly calm and patient & willing to take as long as needed to help her move forward.

The book is fast paced with good suspense & great plot twists. I really enjoyed the narrators & thought they did a great job.

Spice level: 2/5 - closed door romance - I appreciated what the author said at the beginning of the book, that she purposely kept any intimacy from the book to make it a safe place for everyone.

*romantic suspense
*he's a football player
*she's his bodyguard
*she has a past of trauma & abuse and helps/rescues others
*forced proximity
*workplace romance
*found family

Thank you to the author (Stacy Williams), publisher (Tantor Media), narrators & Netgalley for the ALC. All opinions are my own.

Lady bodyguard for a pro athlete? Sign me up!

I'm a huge fan of tough FMCs who eventually find someone that allows them to soften up. I totally got that with Ryder in Hard to Love. Ryder had a very dark childhood (no worries, everything happens off page) that led to the person she is today, a bad*ss who saves kids from human trafficking. Because of an unfortunate incident during a rescue mission, Ryder gets benched and has to take on a bodyguard assignment for Cole, the quarterback.

The growth of their relationship was wonderful to watch and it was also interesting to see the way the writing loosened up as Ryder loosened up. I adored the supporting characters, especially Tracker and the way that he loved Ryder. To round it out, we get a mystery, which added even more to the story!

One thing to note is that there were some things that were kept off page that I would have loved to read. Namely, the action that happens during rescues. I know the author didn't want to include the details of the trafficking on page, which is totally understandable, but I would have loved to read the action sequences of the rescues Ryder carried out. Instead, in those moments, the POV would shift to Cole and we'd just rejoin Ryder after she's done. Regardless, I still really enjoyed Hard to Love and would recommend!

4.5 ⭐️ s

This book was so much more than just a romance or just suspense. Stacy writes found family SO well; there were so many beautiful relationships. While this book did have a romance and a suspense element, it also really shone a light on the horrible reality of human trafficking of kids and the trauma that stems from that. And it showed the beauty of having someone (and not just in a romantic way) show up for you continually when you feel hard to love.

Things I loved:
- the (non romantic) relationship between Tracker and Ryder
- popping into Shane & Maggie’s life again and seeing Maggie is still classic Maggie!
- seeing Cole become a totally safe place for Ryder
- the relationship between Ryder and her “sisters” (the other lost girls)
- the strong, loving, committed marriage relationship the lost girls’ “parents” have & their love for the girls
- so much detail and depth

I’m hoping we’ll get the other sisters’ stories and already can’t wait for more books in this series!

I did find the pacing was maybe a bit slow in the middle of the book but the beginning drew me in right away and I loved how it picked up again later.

Content notes: swearing throughout (no Lord’s name in vain), one FTB scene in the epilogue

Thanks to Greys Promotions and the author for an early complementary copy; all thoughts and opinions are mine.

I discovered Stacy Williams this year and have quickly fallen in love with her writing! She writes beautiful romances that center around found families and relationships of all forms. I was so excited when I received this ARC! The book releases June 2 and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in a romantic suspense with a whole lot of heart!

I will say, the emotional impact is strong with this one and it definitely has a lot of triggers, so be sure to check those. I felt like the author did a fantastic job of tackling a hard reality and I appreciated her Author's Note at the beginning.

The slow burn relationship between Ryder and Cole was was just beautiful. Cole is one of the best MMC I've read in a while- he was just so solid and understanding. Loved him!! And Ryder's journey of learning how to accept love nearly broke my heart.

No complaints on this one. I truly loved it so much and I'm looking forward to reading more of the Lost Girls books ❤️

Such a great book! The subject matter was very heavy but written so well. Ryder’s background and the work that she does is completely heartbreaking but her strength is amazing!

Cole and Ryder are just a perfect match from the start. She is able to let some of her walls down and start to feel safe with him. And he is able to recognize how to help her feel safe and respects her boundaries without getting frustrated or upset. The found family in this book is incredible. The book was a great combination of romance and mystery/suspense with a lot of soul searching and learning to trust.

I loved getting to read Cole’s story and getting to see his family from I Got You again! I am looking forward to hopefully learning more about the other characters in the book including her sisters, Nick, and TJ!

I received an ARC of this book from Grey’s Publishing and this is my honest opinion.

I am completely enchanted! I was drawn in and eager for more details. Please tell me this will turn into a series—I would absolutely love to see all her sisters find their own romantic journeys.

Although this book may not have much spice, it is filled with emotional richness and highlights a beautiful bond. The lack of spice does not diminish its brilliance!

I admire how Cole embraces the presence of a female Protective Agent and how he observes and learns from Ryder. I appreciate that he doesn't pressure her to share things with him.

Thank you for this amazing opportunity to read the eARC, and I am happy to provide my honest review in return.

Deeply emotional and traumatized characters. This was an addictive listen. I enjoyed the narrators voices. The story is heavy on plot and lite on spice. The book is good. I liked the characters and the development of their story. I would like to listen to the rest of the series when it becomes available as audiobooks.

First off, let me just say that Ryder is a total badass. She has an innate goodness that is as massive as her skill set. My heart bled for her and the horrors she survived but lives with daily. A lighthearted romance this is not. It is deeply emotional but has moments of levity and lots of tenderness mixed with layers of suspense. The author delves into dark areas and the depravity that sadly exists in human nature and does not sensationalize it but rather focuses on the strength and bravery that battles it. It is very easy to relate to Ryder on some level with the struggle she has with taking back parts of herself that were stolen. Every Ryder deserves a Cole.

This is a gritty story that deals with heavy & sensitive topics/situations. Although there are many intense moments; there is also healing, found family, sisterhood, and a romance that moves slowly and feels authentic. I liked the dual POVs and getting to see both MCs thoughts & feelings.

This is my first book by this author and I definitely want to go back and read Cole's sister's story.

I really, really enjoyed this! This book covered some hard topics so check TWs but I thought it was done so well. I loved seeing the FMC slowly come out of her shell and fall for Cole, and I loved how patient and kind Cole was 😭😭😭 this was written so well, I flew through the book and I loved getting to know the side characters (I’m looking forward to getting to know them more as the series progresses).

I read this having absolutely no idea what it was about, and I’m SO glad I did. When I quickly read the back, I thought awesome sports romance!! But wow this was not a sports romance and it was everything and more tbh. PLEASE, check the trigger warnings. This was so emotional, raw, slightly predictable but how it played out was *chefs kiss*. I can’t recommend this one enough tbh. I loved the short chapters, the emotion, and the writing style.

Ryder Jones is a protector. She saves children from trafficking, for one. Now, she is sent to protect pro football player Cole Matthews who has been getting threats. Ryder thinks she is "hard to love", scarred from years of abuse as a child. And Cole has trust issues. Yet, they are perfect together.

This book is beautiful! 5 stars!

What a book this was, if I hadn’t of needed to sleep to function as a mum I would have 100%%% have read this in one sitting.

How Stacy Williams put such a traumatic backstory into this beautiful romance was just amazing. Ryder Jones knew how to tug on heart strings. Cole Matthews knew what she needed.

I really recommend this book if you want a feel good traumatic read!
