Danny Dewitt is a Jersey hustler with champagne dreams and a wallet full of bad bets. Running from debt, shame, and the men who want to break his kneecaps, he heads west to Oklahoma — chasing one last shot at striking it rich.
Luck doesn't come easy. Business schemes flop. Promises dry up. Then Danny meets Lucille, the daughter of a wealthy ranch owner with money, confidence, and marriage on her mind. Danny thinks he's struck oil.
But the West isn't kind. Out here, the heat cooks you alive, rattlesnakes coil in the dust, bobcats scream in the night, and the land itself feels hungry. Under the open sky and the merciless sun, deals turn sour fast — and men who come looking for easy fortune often find something far meaner instead.
Because out on the frontier, all that glitters isn't gold.
The premise for this ARC interested me immediately. Western splatterpunk are two of my favorite words to put together and I will say this one did not let me down.
1976 - Daniel Dewitt is a 38 year old New Jersey native who has made his way out west. To Oklahoma City to be exact; the reasons? Well a lot of people want some cash back; but as we learn early on Danny is what he considers to be a freelancing entrepreneur. “Tech-adjacent” as he likes to say. He’s got big ideas, but things don’t always work out for dreamers like Danny.
Every day is a good day for Danny; well except for today. Things go from good, to bad, then worse. We get dropped into a tumbleweed of a story where Danny is trying to figure out which end is up. After all is said and done I have to tell you I may not know which end is up myself.
This is definitely a quick read, the beginning just a little slow - but dear reader, hold tight, because when the action starts it does not stop. I feel like Danny is a “love to hate him” character, where while your stomach flips you can’t wait to see what happens to him next.
This was my first story from Hanson but it won’t be my last.
Danny loses his job. But he’s leaving with an idea in his head he feels will ultimately be successful. He heads off to the bar where he meets Lucille! Let’s just say Lucille isn’t your ordinary southern belle. What ensues is a gory body horror with some grotesque scenes and I loved it! The twist in this one got me. I had not seen it coming. This is a quick read and is paced really well! All in all a great little novella.
This man had a dream and i gotta give it to him he did try and hustle but luck was not on his side. I knew the second he went with her to meet her family where this would go but i did not expect the ending!
✨️ARC Review ✨️ This book was super gross and super great. I was one of the lucky individuals to receive an advanced copy from the author and I read this book in one sitting. It pulls you in right away following Danny, a creepy sleazeball who is weaseling his way through life. The author does a great job combining some humor with fear and gore and overall I think this was a great read. if you're a fan of splatterpunk and dont have a weak stomach, I would definitely give this a read!
I was immediately intrigued by this book, and was pumped to get to be an ARC reader. First of all, this was filthy, twisted, and funny. I loved it! Hanson has a true gift for being so vividly descriptive, at times my stomach actually turned. I laughed out loud several times as well. Danny was such a douche. Honestly, I was cheering on his torture😂 What a delicious freak show. The Mother reminded me of the mother from Barbarian, and I’m here for it. Love that chick. GOOO BEEEBAAAH! And the ending, holy god! Phenomenal. What an intriguing and unexpected twist. I will need more. Guess I’m into splatterpunk now. Slow clap all around. Shoutout to Momaw for shaping the Hanson’s brilliant, twisty mind. RIP.
“Fished a rag from the floor and wiped the moisture, from her penis fly trap.”
“His man juice leaking out of her double wide hole.” -this nearly took me out from laughing so hard
Fucking hilarious that he still held Mother in such high regard😂
“I can't get this big beautiful bitch off me. She's too strong.”
“I think this is it..This gorgeous giant is gonna drown me!”
"But wouldn't that be a waste. As a man we love our dicks. So naturally, that dicks gotta go." Damn straight
"Oh, and by the way," Belphegor cut in, waving a hand like he'd almost forgotten, "you were the worst lay of my entire immortality." Belphegor laughed. "And buddy, I've made some terrible lays during my immortality. I once even threw a fuck at a bowl of smashed potatoes."

I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this book! This is my second splatterpunk read. I keep going back and forth on my rating because 1. I liked the gore but 2. I wanted more (?) More story or detail or more character build or even characterfollow up (?)... The copy I had some typos (the use of "your/you're" and punctuation) and name inconsistencies (Caldwell/Crawford) but aside from that, I like the set up of the first part of the book. Setting up the character which was that of Danny. Then it felt like everything moved too fast - one scene immediately into the next without the detail I crave. I did think this was more "western" - 1. based on the cover 2. Based on the title. I was ready for some hot cowboy stuff but this didn't deliver that besides Mr. Caldwell wearing a cowboy hat on a ranch. At 155 pages it is a quick read that I finished in a couple of hours. I was left wanting more. He could had been thrown back to when his life changed and became the situation he was currently in, in an attempt to wrap up character loose ends - where his life was ened. The gore and detail - decent. I can take more. Character development and wrap up - ehh, need more. This felt rushed BUT... this could also be because of Danny's current situation. Time isn't really time. He questions why certain things aren't playing out correctly. So if you place yourself in Danny's head and maybe his own sense of time - then it is fine but you have to make it to the very end.
I found Tara Hanson on Goodreads… and honestly? No regrets. None.
…other than the fact that now I need more immediately.
This book is absolute insanity—and I mean that in the best way possible. Like, how did she even come up with this?? type of insanity.
It gave me strong House of a Thousand Corpses vibes without actually being that… just that same chaotic, unhinged energy where you’re slightly uncomfortable but can’t look away.
And once you start? Yeah… you’re not putting it down.
It’s a quick read—I finished it in about two hours (and that was with interruptions), but it stays with you way longer than that. The writing is super easy to follow, but somehow you still feel like you’re not fully grasping what’s happening… until everything snaps into place.
And even then? You’re kind of just sitting there like: “…what the f*ck did I just read?”
But in a good way. A very impressed, slightly spiraling way.
The twist at the end?? Didn’t see it coming. Loved it.
Danny as a character is such a mess in the most entertaining way—this self-proclaimed “tech-adjacent” freelancing entrepreneur running from problems (and people) while chasing dreams that never quite land. And somehow you’re just along for the ride while everything slowly unravels.
This was chaotic, dark, weird, and completely addictive.
I’m honestly just grateful I got the chance to read it.
Well, I have to admit I was intrigued by this story. I mean, these are genres I don’t usually read, and I’d never seen them combined before, so when I saw it advertised, I decided I had to give it a try.
After all, I believe you should try everything at least once in life.
I’ll be honest, I had certain ideas and expectations that weren’t met while reading this novel. First of all, I thought it would be much more ironic; I thought it would make me laugh between one gory, splatter-filled scene and the next, the same way some splatter movies make me laugh when buckets of fake blood are splattered everywhere. Instead, I didn’t find it particularly funny.
Danny as a character makes you smile, absolutely—a textbook loser who thinks he’s the man when he’s really just a poor fool, but nothing more than that.
The writing style isn’t bad—clear, sharp—but it doesn’t manage to lift the story itself, which I find pretty hollow. The “plot twist,” if we want to call it that, becomes clear pretty early on in the book; the only one who doesn’t get it is Danny, but oh well, that’s to be expected.
The big plus is that if you have a couple of hours to spare, you’ll be done in no time, so it makes for a light afternoon read.
Before we get into the "meat" of the story (all jokes intended) i have to give props to the narrator. This is the 3rd book i have came across Mr. Jason Rowe as the storyteller and each one has gotten better then the last. You can tell he is a man with many skills that is coming into his craft.
So lets start off with poor poor down on his luck Danny Dewitt and his luck of running into the Lucille were he becomes the luckiest man in the world falling in love so fast. So whats the next step after you fall in love thats right go meet the family and i leave it at that to not spoil the story and let all the readers enjoy like i did. Now to Tara Hanson... what a twisted mind you have lol that story had me gagging a few times and made me cringe. I feel like i going to become a vegetarian after reading this with all the detail you gave. I had to wait a day after reading to take this story all in and recover before i came here to write this review. I thought i had this story figured out in 1st 15mins but nope i was way off then at the end i was like i know exactly were we going and nope i came tumbling down that cliff totally missing that turn. Now ask i lay here in the fetal position recovering all i can say is READ THIS BOOK!!!
Danny DeWitt is down on his luck—he can’t secure funding for his invention, and to make matters worse, he’s just lost his job. Then, out of nowhere, things start looking up. A little bit of cash comes his way, and he meets a stunning woman at a bar who’s in town on business.
Lucille seems like everything Danny could want—beautiful, wealthy, and completely interested in him. At first, it feels like he’s hit the lottery…until he realizes he really, really hasn’t.
This ARC was provided to me by the author, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to check out her newest book. This was my first dip into splatterpunk, and honestly, I had a great time with it. At just 155 pages, it’s a quick, fast-paced read that kept me engaged. Every time I thought I had the story figured out, it took a sharp turn in a completely different direction.
My only real complaint? I wanted more. More character development, more backstory, just…more book. The ending felt a little rushed, but the gore and imagery absolutely delivered.
I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author.
Okay, so this is my second ever splatterpunk story and what the hell did I just read! 🤣
So this is a book of two halves- the first half is a slow burn, scene setting and simmering underlying current of tension brewing. The second half- well let’s just say I wasn’t expecting half of the things that were happening! The ending was very cleverly done and I really enjoyed how it came together!
The descriptions, the gore and the atmosphere had you gripped…and when you think that it couldn’t get any worse…oh yes it does and I don’t know how Hanson came up with all these ideas…especially the bacon 🥓 and the rats 🐀!
I read this book in two sittings, which is pretty fast for me! Please go into this book with an open mind! And more importantly, check your triggers as there are many dark themes present!
I received an advanced reader copy of Cowboy Casanova and I’m really glad I stuck with it. The first half of the book is a bit of a slow build, setting everything up and letting the tension simmer. At times I wasn’t totally sure where it was heading, but once the story hits its stride in the second half, it takes off in a big way.
From that point on I couldn’t put it down. The gore, the atmosphere, and the vivid descriptions were intense and honestly pretty impressive. Tara Hanson doesn’t shy away from the brutality of the story, and it makes the whole thing feel raw and gripping.
Definitely not a book for the faint of heart, but if you enjoy darker, more graphic horror with a strong payoff, this one is worth the ride.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of the book, and let me tell you, I enjoyed it. It was a slow burn in the beginning, and then really took off. Some things I was able to clock right off the bat, a little too cliche, but the ending got me. At first I was seriously asking myself “wtf is this?” but the more I read, the more I enjoyed. And just like poor Danny, I never asked the question either.
If you’re new to splatter punk this is a good book to dip your toes in to. In terms of gore, I’d rate it a 2/5. The scene was well written, Tara described it wonderfully, it’s not just what I’m use to in terms of splatter punk. Still a 4 star read, and I can’t wait to tell my book club about it.
Received an ARC - This was an extremely well written and unique splatterpunk story. Mother was my fav character love that strong beautiful bitch!
I feel like most splatterpunk books nowadays are just word vomit and they try too hard to shock the reader which ends up taking away from the plot.
Not this one! This story was interesting and kept me engaged the whole time while still giving me a good amount of nasty shit (rats, bacon, finger, nuff said).
The plot twist at the end was also excellent! I definitely didn’t expect it.
All in all, loved the book and will def keep an eye out for more from this author.
“Darlin’, smoke or not, it’ll be the ride of your life.”
And it was the ride of Danny’s life.
This book was wild. First off thank you to the author for this ARC.
This book gave me all sorts of vibes. Barbarian (the movie iykyk), Lemmiwinks from South Park. So many references and I enjoyed all of them. There were a couple parts that were very much in the true Splatterpunk fashion of writing and a background plot that I was not expecting. This was delicious but had unexpected bits that made me devour it even faster. 😈
Definitely worth the read and I can’t wait to see more from this author!
First of all thank you to the author Tara Hanson for the opportunity to read this as an ARC. What did I just read!!? I did enjoy this super-fast short read splatterpunk novel. I did think the book would be more of a western based on the super cool cover art, which I adore by the way. The whole second half of this book felt like a psychedelic mind trip with a bit of the butterfly effect vibes! I loved that the author used very descriptive imagery to really set the scenes! The book could have been quite a bit longer, maybe we will get more to this story one day. "Greeds not special anymore, its normal"
Review of Advance Copy Received from Author and I am voluntarily posting a review!
This was my first splatter punk read!
The story centers on Daniel Dewitt, a 38-year-old originally from New Jersey who’s ended up in Oklahoma City (I am from Oklahoma so was interested due to this.) Like many others, he’s chasing opportunity, though he prefers to frame it as being a “freelancing entrepreneur,” He’s ambitious and full of ideas, but it’s clear early on that things don’t always go in his favor.
Danny isn’t exactly easy to root for—he’s more of a character you love to dislike—but that’s part of what makes the story so engaging. You’ll find yourself wanting to see what comes next for him.
The way it is written and worded definitely creates some imagery that you won't unsee.
Cowboy Casanova is a western splatterpunk novella that follows Danny Dewitt, a sleazy man who believes he’s destined to make it big, but all he really has going for him is a ton of debt. He ends up meeting a pretty young woman at a bar, and shit gets real weird, real fast when she decides to take him home to meet her dad on their secluded ranch.
This was a fun, quick ride. It’s gross, with vivid details that will have you sitting there reading with a look of disgust on your face (but in a good way). I really enjoyed the writing, and I was actually surprised by the twist at the end.
Tara Hanson, your nasty, freaky brain is wonderful.
I was so excited to receive this arc of Cowboy Casanova by Tara Hanson thank you again!
The opening takes its time, letting the tension rise, but once things shift, it’s dark, intense, and impossible to put down. The gore fuels the chaos, and I found myself enjoying the book a little too much. The twists kept me fully engaged from start to finish.
From the slow build to the explosive finale, this splatterpunk novella is a wild ride that fans of extreme horror will definitely want to check out. 🐀
This was my first toe into the splatter-punk genre but I really enjoyed it! I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Despite not being my usual fare, this book and me hooked pretty quickly and I had to finish it in one sitting. The main character is the exact kind of greasy jerk we all know and hate - and the twists and turns he gets himself into are as awful as they are descriptive!
Would totally recommend this whether or not you’re familiar with the genre but recommend not reading it while eating any sort of meat… 🫣😆
Danny is a man with a plan, if only others could see his vision. When he meets Lucille at a bar, Danny is convinced that his luck has changed, boy was he wrong.
Cowboy Casanova is Tara Hanson's debut into splatterpunk and she does not hold back. This was a vile and uncomfortable read in the best way possible. The graphic detail Hanson uses to explore Danny's journey is extremely unsettling. There's a scene with a snake in a shed that I will be thinking about for a very long time. This was my first read by Hanson and I can't wait to see what her twisted mind comes up with next.
Danny is a “entrepreneur” and always has a big day that could be a game changer. But he’s the spend before he gets kinda guy. But then today is definitely not his day as it just progressively gets worse. And he meets Lucille. This was a quick book which I was thankful for. I will admit for myself there was a few terms that I just didn’t love in the book. Just weird names for stuff that had me questioning what I was reading at first. That’s the reason I’m giving it a 4. This is a gory book so check your triggers before reading.
This novella is pure splatterpunk energy wrapped in a dark western aesthetic. It’s gritty. It’s aggressive. It does not care about your comfort level. The writing leans hard into atmosphere dusty, violent, and intense with that raw edge splatterpunk fans look for. It’s a fast read that hits hard and doesn’t overstay its welcome. If you like your horror extreme and stylized with a western backdrop, this is absolutely worth checking out. Short. Brutal. Memorable.
Well, I have never had to say, "what did I just read??" until now. If you have a weak stomach, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you can handle it, it's amazing! I laughed, I gagged, and most importantly, as a reptile keeper, the snake scene made me happy 💜. It's an intense book, but with definite Texas Chainsaw vibes! I can't recommend this book enough (but definitely check your triggers, and probably best not to read while eating 😂)
S-E-N-S-A-T-I-O-N-A-L! I knew this was a western horror but I never expected THIS! It is choc full of character and gore and I could not put this down. The main character is such an unlikeable soul but you really end up feeling sorry for him by the end because he was a clueless idiot who kind of wrote his own history. The descriptions in here made me clench my own asshole. If you know, you know. I've never been more grateful to have asscheeks to do that. Well done Tara. You smashed this.
I received an ARC copy from the author. When I originally saw the add for ARC readers I was intrigued. I am the type of person who isn’t bothered by a lot and it takes a lot to scare me so Splatter Punk books are right up my alley and this did not disappoint. I was hooked from the start. The amount of detail used to describe the scenes made me uncomfortable in the best way possible. I tore through this book and am definitely looking forward to see what Tara writes in the future.
