Rate this book
From the moment she was born, Bella was taught to obey. Adam was trained to make sure she did.

In a society where women are property and obedience is survival, Bella is classified as a “pet.” Adam’s role is escort her through the system and hand her over to the man who paid for her.
He has done it before.
He tells himself this time will be no different.
But something shifts the moment she looks at him.
What grows between them isn’t allowed. or safe. And it threatens a system that survives by destroying those who defy it.
Her world is determined to speak for her, and Bella must learn to claim her story and decide who she trusts with what’s left of her.

A Good Pet is a pitch-dark dystopian romance with explicit open-door scenes and heavy themes. The HEA is hard-won. The road to it is brutal. Check content warnings before reading.

I had no clue what the hell I was getting myself into when I signed up for this arc. I didn’t realize how heavy it would be. It was such a hard read because women are considered as pets, nothing they say matters. They are drugged, used & bred to benefit men.
This book is so dark and twisted. But I was addicted, I couldn’t put it down at all. It was so well written and at times it felt real. My heart broke for Bella each chapter. But I was rooting for her to the very end. Yes there is a HEA, but it was hard getting there. Please check the trigger warnings before diving into this novella. Your mental health is so important. ❤️

3.5 ⭐️ Rounded up.

Arc reader, but I pride myself in giving an honest review!

First off, this is pitch black. Check the triggerwarnings. Perfect for 'the hand maids tale' fans who want to kick it up several notches.
I liked the story, the 'blackness' and the characters, tho they felt a little under developed.

The story was good, but felt a little rushed. It didnt quite reach all the way up, but had super potensial. But with so few pages it's still a good read.

Thank you for letting me arc read A good pet.

This is Sienna Zini’s darkest read to date, and I dug every minute of it.

In a dystopian world, maybe not that far from our own (I said what I said), women are once again property by law. They are a gamble for fertility, or they are a pet; otherwise, they are a problem.

Women are taken from their homes, sold by their families to be drugged and transported to a medical facility where they are “fine-tuned” to the perfect little sex toy for whoever decides to buy them. First stripped of their clothes then their pride then their minds, they are conditioned to be able to take immense amounts of pain, stimulation, and abuse over and over again without complaint or refuse or thought. In a darker way, these themes of unfair treatment, mind stripping, and overall abuse reminded me of one of my favorite feminist stories “The Yellow Wallpaper”. While the acts upon the women are different, the vibes were very much the same: gruesome and terrifying for this feminist who sees there are no clear black and white lines in our political landscape when it comes to the treatment of women; someone who sees that this “dystopian” world is not a comfortable distance away from reality.

The romance in this book was beyond complicated, but ultimately strong and redeemed in my opinion. While Adam was the one to deliver her to the facility, he was also the one to save her from the facility. After saving her, he treated her like his own pet, even stealing lust-inducing doses of the medication they fed her at the facility for himself, so that he could keep up to get her through the recovery process (something that would impact his body possibly for life). He knew that she would go through hell if she had to go cold turkey from her…stimulations, so he put his own body at risk in order to help her. Instead of treating her with warmth, as he maybe wanted to, he treated her like an owner was supposed to; this was because he thought when she recovered she would hate him for being the one to initially transport her from her home to the hospital, so he shouldn’t confuse her by being loving towards her. He let her feel all of her feelings, including channeling her rage at him as she went through the process.

This whole aspect of their relationship was completely morally grey, but so was he as a character. He started collecting women to take to the facility so that he could keep his mom and sister safe from the clutches of this world. However, he was also working with the rebellion, where he transported girls to the facility but derailed them to safe houses. One of my favorite lines that I think summed up the truth behind a lot of his moral greyness was “We all did what we could.” In a world so utterly dark and fucked up beyond repair, people will do what they need to in order to survive and keep their own safe; it’s what you do when you have the opportunity to do something just and right that counts.

I loved the escape plan and the HEA our couple got in a country with many more women’s rights. I loved that Bella was strong enough to admit that everything she was going through was new and unprecedented, so she was having none of the doctors and law enforcement in the new country tell her how she should feel about her relationship with Adam. She recognized that it had its red flags, that it started from a very complicated spot and continued to have its complications, but she was going to let herself deal with those complications and live her life without interference by those who thought they knew best for her.

I was intrigued by her Doctor, Doctor Rhodes, having been the one to help them escape and the fact that he took another person from the facility, Claire, as collateral…or so he said. I have a feeling there is a Doctor Rhodes and Claire story waiting to unfold here.

Bottom line, this is dark and twisted and scary by its proximity to our current political climate, but an incredibly read for those who don’t mind the trigger warnings.

Thank you to Sienna Zini for allowing me to be an early reader for this book and trusting me with your book baby.

This was a tough read. An incredible story by Sienna, but also gut-wrenching, nerve-wracking, and at times hard to digest.

The world created here is cruel. Women are treated as nothing more than pets, stripped of autonomy and subjected to horrific conditions. They are drugged and altered to make them more “acceptable,” forced into compliance against their will. It’s disturbing and confronting from the very beginning.

Bella, our FMC, goes through so much. My heart genuinely broke for her. Sold by her father to the highest bidder, she enters this world completely unprepared—young, sheltered, and isolated her whole life to preserve her “value.” What follows is a series of traumatic experiences that strip her down, both physically and emotionally, leaving her barely a shell of who she once was.

Adam, the man who takes her from her home and delivers her into this nightmare, eventually claims her for himself—saving her in his own deeply flawed way. Their relationship is undeniably complicated. It begins with manipulation and imbalance, and while Adam’s actions are far from excusable, there is a thread of care and protection in the way he tries to shield Bella from the worst of their world.

Despite everything, there are moments between them that are surprisingly tender. Their quiet, intimate scenes brought a sense of hope and softness that I held onto, even when things felt overwhelmingly bleak.

I’ll admit, parts of this book were extremely difficult to get through. There were moments that made me feel genuinely unsettled, even close to needing a break. The things Bella endures are confronting and, at times, hard to stomach. But I pushed through, and while I won’t spoil anything, there is light at the end.

This story deeply explores humanity—the darkest parts of it—but also the desperate need for love, safety, and peace, even in the most broken circumstances.

This is not a book to go into lightly. Please read the trigger warnings, take breaks if needed, and look after yourself while reading. But if you can get through it, there is a rewarding and emotional conclusion waiting.

I don’t think I fully realized what I got myself into by reading this book and that’s not necessarily a bad thing just not what I was expecting. I just thought I was about to read something completely different than what I actually read. To read that a government has changed so much and has made the female population less than an object was disturbing and heartbreaking. To have the government and medical staff invent serums so that the women become compliant and basically a s*xually available at all times, a brainwashed pet and to bend to the man’s every will was scary and disturbing. and I hope that never actually happens in real life. to read that there was still strong individuals out there who didn’t believe in this and tried to rescue as many young girls as possible so they don’t succumb to a horrible lifestyle was something I held onto. They knew their fate if the government ever were to find out and they still did it. It helped restore a bit a faith in humanity for this book. And of course there’s MCs… a man disguised as a collector only to be part of the people who saves the girls. Found someone he just couldn’t live without. He did the unthinkable just to try and save her. He became her owner. And his pet, a girl who was raised knowing she would be sold one day and for it to finally happen. But her brain and willpower was always stronger. Yes the story takes some dark turns and some people may not agree with the ending or feel like it was Stockholm syndrome, but really at the end of the day she finally got something was was never given before. A choice. She chose she wanted and it just so happened to be him. Her words “is he a hero? No not by a long shot. But he did what he could - more than most of my countrymen ever did. He risk more.” They went through a lot of traumatizing things together and once it was over and they were free, they stayed by each other’s side. By the end it was as more Adam and Bella not Sir and Pet. It was more like that turned into a kink rather than a role that was forced on them.

I am… wrecked. Steamrolled. Emotionally chewed up and spat back out in the best, most unhinged way possible. The Good Pet is not a book you read casually. It’s a book that grabs you by the throat, whispers something dangerous in your ear, and then dares you to keep going.

Bella and Adam? Absolutely feral for them. Not in a soft, cozy way. In a “this is wrong, this is dangerous, I cannot look away” kind of way. The dynamic is razor sharp, all tension and quiet rebellion simmering under rules that feel suffocatingly real. The world Sienna Zini built here is brutal without apology. Women as property, obedience as currency… it’s bleak, it’s heavy, and it never lets you forget the stakes.

And Adam… I need to talk about Adam. This man lives in denial like it’s a full-time job. Watching him try to convince himself Bella is just another assignment while clearly unraveling inside? Delicious agony. You can feel the shift in him, that slow cracking open, and it’s messy and imperfect and so, so good.

Bella, though, is the heartbeat. She starts in this quiet, controlled space, shaped by a system designed to erase her, and watching her push back… not in loud explosions, but in small, defiant flickers… it hit hard. Every choice she makes feels like it could cost her everything, and that tension sits in your chest the entire time.

This is not a fluffy romance. It’s sharp edges, bruised hope, and a love story that has to claw its way out of something rotten. The connection between them feels stolen, fragile, almost dangerous to even exist. And the payoff? Hard-earned doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Also, check the content warnings. Seriously. This book doesn’t pull punches and it shouldn’t be walked into blindly.

But if you’re into dark dystopian romance that hurts, that makes you question everything while still rooting desperately for two people to find something real in a broken world… this delivers. I devoured it and then just sat there after, staring into space like I’d just survived something.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into reading this ARC. It is clear how much thought, intention, and effort went into writing something this heavy, disturbing and impactful.

I’m going to start by saying this as clearly as possible… please take the trigger warnings seriously. This is not a light read. This book is intense, dark, and at times very difficult to process. It is very raw, very graphic, and very very sexual in a way that is deeply tied into the themes of control, power, and dehumanization. There were moments that genuinely felt like a punch to the chest. The content is extremely heavy and unsettling, and definitely not something to go into lightly.

That being said, this book is very well written.

The author does an incredible job of pulling you into this world and making you feel everything. The brutality, the control, the emotional weight… it is all conveyed in a way that is powerful and immersive. You don’t just read this story, you experience it, and that takes a lot of skill as a writer.

The concept itself is extremely bold. It is disturbing, thought provoking, and pushes boundaries in a way that will stick with you long after you finish. It really makes you sit with uncomfortable ideas and emotions, which I think readers who enjoy darker, more intense dystopian stories will appreciate.

For me personally, it was just way too intense and sexual. It pushed me outside of what I typically gravitate toward in reading, and there were moments that were hard for me to get through emotionally. But that does not take away from how well it was executed or how impactful it is.

I think for readers who enjoy very dark, raw, and unfiltered stories, this will be an incredibly powerful read. It is not meant to be easy. It is meant to challenge you, and it absolutely does that.

Overall, while this was outside of my personal comfort zone, I truly respect the author’s work and the story she created. It is bold, emotional, and unforgettable in its own way.

This novella is a harrowing exploration of a world where women are stripped of their agency, their clothes, and eventually, their very minds. The narrative follows a chilling process of fine tuning women at a medical facility, transforming them into objects for consumption.

Adam is the definition of a morally grey protagonist. His introduction is unforgivable he is the one who delivers Bella to her nightmare. Yet, his motivations are buried under layers of survival and protection for his own family.
His redemption is unconventional and messy. By keeping Bella in a state of ownership during her recovery, he risks his own long term health to taper her off the facility’s medications, choosing to be the target of her rage rather than confusing her with unearned affection. His involvement with the rebellion and the haunting line, we all did what we could, perfectly encapsulates the impossible choices made in a broken world.

Bella’s strength shines brightest in the aftermath. In a world that views her as a pet, her ultimate act of rebellion is claiming her own emotions. I loved that she refused to let external authorities doctors or law enforcement dictate how she should feel about her complicated bond with Adam. She acknowledges the red flags and the trauma, but she demands the right to navigate those complexities on her own terms.

The escape to a country with established rights provides a hard earned HEA (Happily Ever After), but the journey there is grueling. I am also incredibly intrigued by the breadcrumbs left regarding Doctor Rhodes and Claire there is clearly a deep, perhaps equally dark, story waiting to be told there.

This is an addictive, well-crafted, and deeply unsettling read. It is dark, twisted, and heavy with themes of breeding, drugging, and abuse. Please prioritize your mental health and check all trigger warnings before diving in.

ARC review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Good Pet isn’t an easy read and it’s not meant to be. It’s the kind of story that settles under your skin, uncomfortable and unrelenting, and forces you to sit with it.

From the very first page, the world is cold and controlled. Women aren’t just oppressed they’re stripped of identity, reduced to “pets,” taught that obedience is survival. It’s disturbing in a way that feels intentional, setting the stage for a story that’s less about romance and more about autonomy, trust, and what it means to choose for yourself.

Bella is heartbreaking in the quietest way. She’s been shaped by a system that never gave her a voice, and watching her slowly begin to question, to feel, to want something beyond what she’s been told it’s subtle, but incredibly powerful.

And then there’s Adam.

He’s not a hero in the traditional sense. He’s part of the machine, trained to enforce it, to deliver girls like Bella without hesitation. But the shift in him? It’s slow, conflicted, and filled with tension. You can feel that internal war duty versus something dangerously close to compassion and it adds so much depth to the story.

What grows between them is fragile. Forbidden. And constantly under threat. There’s no sense of safety here, no guarantee that anything will work out, which makes every moment between them feel heavier.

This isn’t a story full of loud rebellion it’s quieter than that. It’s about small cracks in a broken system. About a girl learning she’s more than what she was labeled. About the terrifying, powerful act of choosing for yourself when you’ve never been allowed to before.

A Good Pet is a dark, dystopian novella that doesn’t waste a single page. Set in a future where women are reduced to commodities and trained as “pets,” it follows Bella — sold by her own father into a system designed to break her. It’s bleak, it’s uncomfortable, and it’s meant to be.

What makes this story work is how grounded it feels. Sienna Zini doesn’t shy away from the torment Bella endures, but she also doesn’t use it for shock value. Instead, she focuses on Bella’s fear, confusion, and resilience, letting you sit with the emotional weight of what’s happening to her.

Enter Sir — Adam — the collector who steals her not to own her, but to save her. His care is twisted, complicated, and deeply shaped by the world they live in. You understand why Bella fears him and why she slowly begins to trust him. Their dynamic is messy in a way that feels intentional and human.

The moments where Bella is in real danger (from others, not Adam) are genuinely tense. You’re hoping she survives, hoping justice finds the right people, and fully aware that her story is just one of many in this brutal system.

There’s no filler, no unnecessary scenes — just a tight, intense narrative that leaves you wanting more. And from what I understand, this novella is only the beginning, with more stories planned in this world.

If The Handmaid’s Tale collided with the raw emotional grit of Invi Wright’s Female series, you’d get something like this. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more of Sienna Zini’s work.

It's been awhile since I've read a Pitch Black romance, and I was sold by the Dystopian vibes of this one! Yet this book is dark in a way that’s hard to shake... but I just couldn’t look away!

The world is freaking brutal. Where women are treated as pets, stripped of free will, drugged, and controlled. It’s disturbing, raw, and at times absolutely difficult to read. But the writing is so gripping I found myself not wanting to put it down to see what came next.

Bella’s story hurts. Watching her navigate a life she never chose had my heart breaking, but I kept rooting for her the entire time to take something back for herself. Adam starts as part of the system, which makes everything more complicated, but the shift in him... the way the begins to see her, to question everything..it added this layer that made their dynamic messy, dangerous, and hard to hate him.

This is not a light or easy read. It’s raw, graphic, and intensely tied to themes of control, power, and survival. The romance is there, but it’s tangled in trauma and risk, and the HEA is so earned because of the brutal journey these two go through to get there!

If you pick this up, take the trigger warnings seriously. This story goes to dark places and stays there longer than most....But if you can handle it, it’s gripping, haunting, and impossible to forget!!

When I first started reading this novella, I had no idea what I was getting into. I don’t usually read pitch-black stories,or too many novellas ,but this one completely surprised me.
It’s fast-paced, well-written, and has a depth that many novellas often lack. The storyline is gripping, pulling you into a dark, intense world that’s not for the faint-hearted.
This book is raw, twisted, and addictive. It’s the kind of story that makes you question what you’re reading, yet you can’t look away. At times it’s shocking, at times overwhelming, and definitely not something you’ll forget easily.

You’ll find yourself emotionally torn, especially when it comes to the male lead he will turn each reader into his Pet.
I was rooting for Bella every step of the way. Expect to feel everything: shock, excitement, discomfort, and maybe even a little obsession.

Please check the trigger warnings before diving in, this book covers some heavy and difficult themes.

Overall, this novella deserves top marks. It’s bold, different, and unforgettable.

Ans last but not least, just look at this gorgeous cover, I can imagine it already on my bookshelf.

So this was the first book I read from Sienna Zini. I received as an arc read. And man was it darker than night. Was not sure what to expect. Do not go into this thinking it will be a light read. And your emotions and heart won't be torn out. It grabs you from page 1 and hooks you through the whole book.
I wanted to jump in and help Bella myself to get her out of the torture that she went through in this dark and cruel world. To be treated as property and worse yet a pet. It is a world no woman or person for that matter should be part of.
Adam was a good MC. He was strong and easy to like. Even though he was the one to deliver Bella to her awaiting fate in the beginning. He was the man to save her in the end. I felt like the use of the word "pet" was a little strong throughout the book. There were areas where I felt he could have used Bella's name instead. But my opinion.
Overall this was a great work of fiction. Perfect for the dark romance souls .

1. This was spicyyyyyyyyy.
2. Don't even try to read this without reading the content/trigger warnings. You could get uncomfortable very quickly at multiple points throughout this novella.

This. Was. Hot. How can you read such a disturbing (when you think of it in real-life terms and not fictional ones) story and want to experience it so badly?!? I want a bottle. I want one right now. I shouldn't. But I do. I want an Adam. I definitely don't want a Bryce or a Loomis (but also......??????). I loved Adam's devotion to Bella and how he really tried to do the right thing at every turn. I loved the bratty moment and how that was explained from Bella's point of view. I loved how Prescott was described as a walrus. I loved how Rhodes tried to help the best he could. And I really loved how Bella's predicament was described in detail throughout the story. She went through a really pretty, terrifying, horrible hell that has me doubting my sanity for wanting it.

A Good Pet by Sienna Zini

Wow. Just wow. The start of this book was absolutely insane. I haven’t read a dystopian dark romance yet but I have to say Sienna Zini got me into them for sure! The story line is really good it jumps time a little and I think the fact that the author does that makes the story better. The changing of the country towards the end makes my heart happy. Adam (MMC) is a vigilante of sorts and he is helping in his own way and the only way he can. And then he meets Bella (FMC) and everything changes for him and I think their relationship helps shape him into a better guy. Bella is an enigma of a character and reading her growth and seeing the difference between her at the beginning of the book versus the end was fantastic. She is definitely a strong FMC toward the end and I am here for it!!! Can’t wait to see what’s next for these two!!

The Handmaid’s Tale meets Beauty and the Beast

This story was so dark, unsettling, and twisted in ways that made me uncomfortable at times, but it forced me to think.

What struck me the most was how frighteningly close this dystopian world feels to reality. It really wasn’t that long ago when women had little to no rights, treated as property, expected to exist solely for men’s comfort and needs. That reminder lingered in the back of my mind the entire time, making the story feel less like fiction and more like a warning.

The love story between Adam and Bella was both painful and strangely beautiful. Their relationship wasn’t easy or gentle, but emotionally heavy, making every moment between them hit harder.

I closed this book stunned, already craving more.

This book was an adventure and wild ride of one of a kind. i was on the edge of my seat wondering how everything was going to work out and if Adam will be able to save and bring back Bella or if she was going to be captured forever. this book had an interesting spin were women weren't considered women but are pets and that you could purchase them when its their time. but a rebellious group try's to put a stop to it but get caught doing so. this was a ride filled with so much it was hard for me to put it down and i really needed to know what was going to happen next. cant wait to know if their will more for these two in the future.

Wow……. I loved the overall concept and gave me strong The Handmaid’s Tale vibes but with a much darker spicier twist.

The intimacy is a big part of the story and definitely not subtle with extreme details leaving nothing to the imagination. In between these moments though the writing skipped around or lacked details which would’ve made the story flow a bit better… same with the relationships, at times they felt surfacey and i wasn’t fully drawn in (almost like this could’ve been a shorter novella instead). Regardless, i loved it and couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend for smut fans out there!

Forget dipping in your toes first this novella has you diving head first into the deep end at the start. Its dark, its twisted and I want more. Pet a.k.a. Bella is an interesting FMC. She is strong willed which makes the novella great. Sir a.k.a. Adam is The MMC that is needed. I will say read the trigger warnings and be mindful. To be a novella, the author did great to give you a great character and story bulld with such a quick read. I recommend this book if you like your smutt like you like your coffee dark dark. spice level out of this world.

I’m not usually a fan of novella standalones, but A Good Pet really worked for me. The forced proximity, age gap, and morally dark MMC create a very intense and gripping dynamic.

My only real complaint is the length—I wish this had been a full-length novel because there was so much potential for deeper development.

Also, definitely check the trigger warnings before reading, as the content can be quite heavy.

Overall, a dark and compelling read that left me wanting more.

I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

While this books is really spice heavy I do hope people will go into it thinking more about the over arching themes and issues within it bc I actually found it really thought provoking in different ways. I liked that in the end it showed the grass isn’t always greener and sometimes even in what is considered a better place people might still not understand you or may try to make choices for you. I also like the theme of meeting people where they are. We see that a lot with the MMC needing to adjust how he treats the FMC over time.

Being such a short book it really had me hooked and wanting more. Really need to check your triggers for this one!

We're set in a world where something happened a few generations back that caused the Men to be in complete control. Women are just objects to be sold off if they're fertile. Belle our FMC ends up falling for someone thats not her owner. The MMC doesnt think anyone could love him and thinks its just the medicine Belle was given that makes her want him. Theres so much that happens in these few pages. If you're a fan of the tropes and OK with the triggers give it a read!

A Good Pet is a pitch black dystopian romance that is haunting, brutal, and impossible to put down. Bella’s journey through a world where women are treated as property is raw and heartbreaking, making the messy, dangerous dynamic with Adam feel incredibly high stakes.

Think The Handmaid’s Tale but kicked up several notches. It’s a quick, visceral read that explores intense themes of psychological control and survival. The HEA is hard earned and deeply satisfying, but definitely check the trigger warnings before diving into this dark world.

This is a dark, dystopian novella about Bella & Adam, aka Sir. Bella's dad sells her to be used as a pet, which is basically for sex & breeding for men. She goes through so much in this book. Bella & Adam do have a HEA in the end. I think this is the first book I've read like this. This is different. If you're easily triggered, then check TW'S before reading. Thank you to the author for the e'arc.

Pitch dark and dystopian, this novella is definitely not for the faint of heart. 🫣

Intense and emotionally charged, it drives you into a story where you can only but cheer for Bella. 🖤

It’s amazing to see her development and empowerment. A strong heroine who can stand for herself. ❤️‍🔥

Her connection with Adam is forbidden, but genuine and deep. Charged with tension and desire. 🔥

Fans of The Handmaid's Tale like me can only love this book! 💯

This is a review of an arc, provided by the author. Thank you Sienna for this opportunity 😀

First of all, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into while I applied for this arc. It’s one of the darkest books I’ve read. It’s not an easy read but it pulled me in.

If you like following tropes:
👉 novella
👉 age gap
👉 pitch black
👉 dystopian world
👉 forced proximity
👉 capter/captive
👉 spice 🌶️🌶️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Then read this book!

Buckle up because this is one hell of a wild and naughty ride. Bella and Sir pushed the boundaries and decided that the life women were trained to succumb to wasn’t how it was going to work anymore. They defied everything. Sir wanted her, there was something about her and he just couldn’t pass her along like was supposed to. This was dark and intense. The spice was seriously spicing in this one. The twists and turns were wild. I devoured this bad boy. One of the best books I’ve read in awhile.

This was a very interesting and intense story!
The female rage i felt reading this book 😅 I did like how Sienna wrote Adam, he did save Bella but was very self aware that how everything had to go down was still so very wrong.
This book is heavy on dark themes, so if you decide to read it (I hope you do) please read the trigger warnings carefully.

Firstly, the plot...dark and yet quite captivating too. I truly wasn't sure how things were gonna play out, so I was addicted until the very end.
It was full of twists, so many different emotions, suspense and danger. There was definitely lots of spice, in all forms so do mind the trigger warnings.
I do love how the author ended the story. When Bella stood up for herself it was perfect.
