Displaced Fairytales

Bluebeard's Bride

Rate this book
She ran from one monster…straight into the arms of another.
When Alia traded her future for her sister’s freedom, she knew exactly what awaited her—a murderous husband with a trail of vanished wives. Upon discovering a hidden lamp, she makes a desperate wish to save her life, not knowing that genie magic always comes with a cruel twist.

Alia is hurled halfway across the world and straight into the clutches of Zafir, a villainous vizier with ambitions of his own. Now Alia is trapped in a foreign kingdom, her sister is in more danger than ever, and the murderous husband she fled is hunting for her.

So Alia strikes a dangerous bargain with the one man she absolutely should not trust. The problem is…an overdose on a highly illegal love potion leaves them questioning which feelings are real and which are not.

With her sister out of reach and a villain chained to her side, how is she supposed to save anyone, least of all herself?

Bluebeard’s Bride is a standalone no-spice fantasy romance packed with villain vibes, sharp-tongued banter, forced proximity, and love potion shenanigans perfect for fans who love their fairy tales clever, edgy, and delightfully unhinged.

Oh my gosh. This was a masterpiece of enemies to lovers banter, no spice romance, and high stakes. Each character was dynamic and wonderfully crafted with their own charming (or not so charming) personalities and traits. Alia and Zafir?? Perfection. Adore them. Love them. Favorite couple I’ve read in a book in quite a long time!
Also my first favorite of this year!
The plot was so good, so intriguing and gripping, and I basically read this in one sitting, I just could NOT put it down!!
I was smiling like a little girl, giggling, and snorting in laughter, refusing to speak to anyone who wanted my attention while I read this lol
I could fangirl about this book allllllll day. All month. All year.
Literally. I will probably reread it soon because I neeeeeeeed this type of book in my life!!
Yall when I say I’m obsessed with this book!!!
There were so many scenes that I just completely adore and when I get my physical copy, will probably tab so I can find them quickly…but then again there’s too many of them for me to do that…I’d mark every page 🤣 so I guess I’ll be rereading a lot hehe
But the way Zafir is with Alia?! So respectful so honorable, yet so fun and charming and wonderful and lovely. Alia is so full of spunk and personality, and the two of them make a wonderful pair!
Also the villain!! So wonderfully done but man was he intense!!
If I had to pick one thing about the book I loved the most is Zafir and Alia’s relationship. I know that’s mostly what the book is about, but truly it’s my favorite part. He truly is the epitome of what a guy should be like in treating a woman (you’ll see when you read it) even if he is gruff at the beginning.
I love that he’s real and authentic. I love that Alia tries to see past his guard and truly cares about his walls and why he built them. I love how he cares so gently with her but would fight for her until his last breath. I love how she fights for him too.
A beautiful impactful romance of real emotions and real connection!

Content:
No spice romance, kissing, talking of seducing a man and lessons on how to do so, blood, violence, death, some scenes that could be disturbing to some because of violence, potions and poison

I’m sad because I really wanted to like this one because I’ve loved other books by this author. Most of my problems with it were mostly because of the Bluebeard part of story, I was expecting it to be a little ehhhhh but not to the extent it was.
I did not like the main girl, she made a lot of comments that were just too much for me. Plus the whole makeup thing, she asked for it and wanted the guy to do it yet also was like “oh he wouldn’t like me if I wasn’t wearing makeup” Plus that whole situation where she wanted him to kiss her and he was under a spell and struggling and she was honestly just being a brat. I also didn’t like the clothes, she threw a fit when the guy wouldn’t let her wear a dress that showed everything. Dude he was protecting you! And when she teased him when she needed help with her dress and she was like “oh you’ve never seen a lady’s bare back before?” No just no.
Plus there was a minor thing about someone being physically abused in a relationship, plus Bluebeard killing women left and right.
I’ve seen some reviews of this where there is even more content that I’m not comfortable with so I just decided to stop.
Someone else might be okay with it, but it’s not for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Thank you so much Mary Mecham for this ARC! When I got the ARC for this I nearly screamed out of pure unbridled joy! Mary Mecham is my favorite author for a reason guys I love everything she writes. I would read literally anything if she wrote it. Also this had a pronunciation guide which was extremely helpful. And when I saw that we would get to see Tarquin and Azora from ‘Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice’ again I was so excited because I love them both so much. The opening scene was already amazing. I loved this so much! The banter was freaking amazing omg it was hilarious. Every interaction between Alia and Zafir (when they still hated each other) had me laughing so hard. I loved that it was a female Aladdin falling in love with Jafar. That was such an interesting way to do this story. Everything was so creative and I loved the nods to the original fairytales as well as the elements original to this story. Azora, Rapunzel, and Alia would be such good friends. When he ODed on love potion that was hilarious I loved that part. I highlighted so many parts basically the entire book in my e arc copy. And that plot twist!? That was insane. I didn't see that coming at all. I loved the epilogue so much!

“𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥, 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥. 𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦, 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦?”

The Characters
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alia ~ I absolutely loved her, she was amazing!
Zafir ~ I loved him! He was so perfect for Alia even if she didn't realize it for most of the book. And omg he was such a gentleman! When he wanted to be rude he could be really rude but when he was nice he was so freaking sweet!
Nadia ~ she was ok. I didn't love her but she was alright.
Tarquin ~ I still loved him for the few paragraphs he was in this book.
Azora ~ I still loved her as well.
“𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴, 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘵 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦.”
Quotes
~~~~~~~
“Did you sleep better?” His arms didn’t move.
“Much better. But I’m surprised you slept in,” I told him. “You always wake up early.”
He propped himself up on his elbow and his eyes searched my own. “You aren’t the only one who dislikes being alone at night. And if I’m going to be with someone, I want it to be you.”

“Flaming phoenixes, I had fallen for him so hard. He had to know it, despite all my hostility and barbed insults.”

“You’re being kind,” I stood up, “When I’m not busy being a venomous viper or plotting to murder my ex-husband, I’m actually a very kind person.”

“How long are the effects supposed to last?”
“At least another hour.”
“Can you make an antidote?”
“Not in the allotted time left. Just don’t talk. Or move. Or exist. It’s too distracting.”

(4.5) Arc Review of Bluebeard’s Bride by Mary Mecham.

This book was very enjoyable with so many unexpected twists. An Aladdin retelling in such a unique way.

Alia was a very strong FMC with sarcasm and banter for days. Her character did become annoying when she just refused to listen and almost made grave mistakes. Characters like this just annoy me to a point where I don’t enjoy reading about them.

There are 2 male characters in this book, worlds apart. Escape from one monster to the next.

The flow of the story was great and easy to follow. The story was fast paced and full of interesting events and twists you never see coming.

I loved Zafir and his story breaks your heart. The book was filled with emotions and at some stage you want to laugh and cry and be angry all at the same time.

This is a clean fairytale retelling romance and recommend to any fairytale reader who enjoys a twisty story with a happy ending.

Are you kidding, Bluebeard and Aladdin??? Count me in!

This book was *weeping* beautiful🥹😍 Not only was Alia a fiery FMC but she had depth and, the best part: she wasn't annoying 🤯🎉 And the MMC was so hot 🥵 I think my heart genuinely leapt out of my chest at least 10 times❤️💥 The chemistry between them was crazy!!! This book made me forget I was reading, it was just me, Alia, and Zafir.

When Mary Mecham was releasing this book I was so excited, I love Bluebeard and I love Mary Mecham, so you better believe I was telling Everyone about how this book was coming out. And in all, it met, and went beyond, my expectations!!!

This book was very original Blackbeard until it WASN'T 🤯 In two words, this book is Pure Genius!!! My favorite aspects of this book: potions✨, enemies to lovers😗, facial hair🤤 The one thing, not even a critique, I kinda want to see Zafir's POV.

Mary Mecham, please keep the books coming!!! ❤️📚

Thanks to the author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was almost going to be a three star review until I read the ending…the twist was a beautifully crafted masterpiece!

Mary Mecham is evidently a very talented author and I can’t wait to read more of her books!!

I’m not the hugest fan of forced enemies to lovers (i.e. they insta-despise each other for absolutely no reason because it can feel artificial) but the witty banter? So good!

As for addictive levels?
Through the roof! I needed to study, but every time I swiped to the next page to pause, it drew me in and I couldn’t stop!

I know it’s a good book when the last chapters are read in my head at 2x speed which is what happened here. I was holding on to every word and like I said, the end was the best part (in a good way!)

And I laughed out loud (not really iykwim) when there was a guy named Julian with a lemur (and later a lemur named Julian)—get it? King Julian the lemur from Madagascar? Didn’t know that was one of the retelling aspects…

Amazing for Romantasy fans of swoon without spice!

Alia marries a man known for leaving a trail of missing wives behind him, but she does it to save her sister. In an attempt to save her own life she makes a desperate wish when she finds a mysterious lamp - and ends up in the clutches of a powerful vizier. Has Alia gone from bad to worse?

This is a mashup retelling of Bluebeard and Aladdin, and it works really well! Although it's part of the Displaced Fairytales series it's a standalone fantasy romance with no spice, but with high stakes and lots of snarky banter!

“When I’m not busy being a venomous viper or plotting to murder my ex-husband, I’m actually a very kind person.”

Alia has many good qualities, but sometimes I just want to yell "NO, what are you doing?!" and stop her. Zafir (the vizier) is more or less her opposite, very cool and calculated. The only thing they truly have in common is their love for potions. This is a real enemies-to-lovers and a slow-burn, where we have to wait for the romance. Unless we count the flirting lessons Zafir gives Alia when she's going to seduce another man in order to get him to pay for her journey home...

Some parts are predictable, but others surprise me. This is not a cozy fantasy (the stakes are too high), but the tone is still lighthearted and humorous.

No one does twists like Mary! I wasn’t sure if there was going to be one, and then the last 10% hit, and HELLO, what was twist. 😂

The banter was killing me, hahaha, and kept me up way too late. The love potions and flirting lessons were hilarious. But Zafir and Alia were everything. So ridiculously adorable and snarky. They might be my new favourite Mecham couple. 🥹

This one did feel older than Mary’s other books—almost more NA than YA—due to character ages, but it’s still sweet, stabby, and amazing with no questionable content for teens!

UGH SO SO GOOD!!! I devoured this book and it had me reading it as fast as I was able to. I absolutely adore Alia and Zafir. All the banter and snarky commentary back and forth. Their initial encounter is everything 🤣

Again Mary getting me with these plot twist! This was truly such an enjoyable story and I absolutely have to read Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice soon! I’m gonna have more of a review to come!

I read this in basically one sitting and it was really good. I absolutely loved the banter and laughed at several different scenes. The beginning was eerily familiar like I had read that plot before (and I think I know which book. I just have to fact check on it) but once Alia relocated (to avoid spoilers) that feeling of familiarity left. I loved the Easter eggs to the other books in the same world. I have read Rapunzel's Gambit but not Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice just yet. This was a fun whirlwind of a story! I enjoyed it so much and look forward to buying a copy for my trophy shelf.

Are you a no-spice reader with a love for fairytales?
Bluebeard’s Bride is a high stakes, hate at first sight Bluebeard retelling that is absolutely CAPTIVATING. ✨

Our snarky female lead, Alia is an orphaned street rat who is also responsible for her younger sister, Nadia.
They run into trouble and Alia is forced into marrying Rahil/Bluebeard to save her sister.
He’s had many wives who mysteriously disappeared or died, but is rich beyond belief. How bad could it be? 👀😅

This book kept me on the edge of my seat!! 😧

Anytime I had to put it down to do “adulting”, I felt like I was being ripped out of Alia’s world. 🫠

The twist at the end was something I NEVER saw coming and really brought the tiniest of details full circle. 😱

If this is your first read by Mary Mecham, don’t stop here!! 👏🏻👏🏻

I received this book as an ARC, but the thoughts and feelings about this book are entirely my own.

4* and Enjoyable

This is the first time I'm reading anything from Mary mecham

So it took me a minute to get in to her style of writing.

I received a ARC for an honest review so here we go.

I won't give any spoilers for starters.

It was an interesting take on two tales Bluebeard and Aladdin.

I did think it maybe took a minute to get into as introducing characters right is essential (I just wanted it to move a little quicker)

Once the story started moving well it got moving so much so that I absolutely loved the banter between A and Z and I wanted it to last a lot longer (I could have also done with more flirting lessons!) honestly had me laughing a lot.

Now at this point the story did have a rushed vibe (I was not a fan of that) and well I understand things had to be resolved (I just wanted more)

Anyway once I got started it was hard to stop (so in my case excellent story telling and fun characters kept me entertained)

Why 4* then well I wanted a lot more and I did feel a little unsure if I'd keep reading but I did feel intrigued about other characters introduced and found they also had a book so I do plan on reading a lot more from Mary Mecham

All in all good, fun and entertaining(with a bit of threat and violence, maybe a bit of gore (due to a stab wound so might be a little uncomfortable to some readers)

4⭐️ ARC Review: That forced proximity man. It gets ‘em every time! I’m loving this series so far. This is a powerhouse group of fantasy authors. At this point though I’ve only read this and one other one, so I’m excited to read more. But the two that I’ve read couldn’t be any more opposite lol.

This one is gritty, tension-filled, suspenseful at times, and has some fantastic snarky banter. I’m coming to find that that is the Mary special. Enemies to lovers at its finest.

Zafir and Alia are complex and passionate characters, and I loved them. They are abrasive and you can maybe define them as ‘villians’ (not really) but on the inside they feel A LOT and just want to be loved. They had some serious chemistry too. I enjoyed watching them go from enemies to lovers. Zafir shows his growing love for her by getting increasingly jealous and protective. That sounds toxic but it’s not lol. But I think they both had a thing for each other from the beginning. Although maybe not the very beginning. Their meet-cute is not cute lol.

The plot was almost perfect for me. The beginning was a bit slow, and people may think the time they are chained together is slow too, but I loved it. And they basically spend the entire time in Zafir’s home together. That usually doesn’t go well for me when they are in one setting for most of the book, but it worked here. It results in the main characters having lots of dialogue and moments together which I eat up.

Now. Mary’s books are clean (as far as language and romance go) but this definitely has the most heat of all of her books when it comes to the romance. I’m not complaining at all. Just thought I’d make those aware who are looking for something squeaky clean. But your teen could still read this in my opinion.

I loved that this book takes place in the same world as the books ‘Rapunzel’s Gambit’ and ‘Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice’. We even get Azora and Tarquin cameos! Kind of fun.

Another side note, there is NO cheating! You may think there might be but trust me. I’m really grateful Mary took the time to make sure of that.

I loved this. Mary is probably my top 5 if not my favorite fantasy author. Auto-buy.

Read if you enjoy:
- Bluebeard/Aladdin mashup
- Fairytale retelling
- Enemies to lovers
- Single POV
- Forced proximity (chained together)

Content 💋:
- Kisses only
- No language

Mary Mecham has officially proven that she is the queen of banter, and this is only my first book by her.
The banter between Alia and Zaphir is top tier, sharp, witty, and laugh-out-loud funny in so many places. I swear half the time I was grinning because of their constant snark.
And the tropes in this book?? Absolute perfection.
• Hate at First Sight
• Enemies to Lovers
• Love Potion Shenanigans
• Handcuffed Together
• Only One Bed
• Kissing Lessons with the Villain
• He does Her Makeup
• Snarky Banter for days
The love potion scenes were some of my favorite parts of the entire story. The mix of tension, humor, and pure chaos made those moments unforgettable. And the scene where Zaphir does Alia's makeup?? I was not expecting that, and I loved every second of it.
Mary Mecham somehow manages to balance humor, romantic tension, and heartfelt moments so effortlessly. The chemistry between the characters jumps off the page, and every interaction feels alive thanks to the incredible dialogue.
Huge thank you to the author for the ARC! I had so much fun reading this story and cannot wait for more from Mary Mecham.

review of the story:

This author is known for clean fairytale retellings and this was certainly clean. Even moments that toed the line a bit were still squeaky clean and there is nothing more in this book than a few kisses. This is a mashup of Bluebeard and Aladdin (with a female Aladdin). It took me approximately forever to figure out that Alia was the Aladdin character. I really liked how the two fairy tales fit together, especially at the end of the book. It was really well done, especially the Bluebeard parts. I found the middle to be a little draggy and they spent way too much time trying to figure out how to make the other guy like Alia. Zafir was an interesting character and I liked how snarky Alia was to him. The romance was cute. The story was enjoyable, even though it felt a bit long in the middle.

review of the audiobook:

This was narrated by Talon David, and I thought she did a pretty good job. She was a little more exuberant of a reader than the last audiobook I listened to so that threw me off a little bit when I first started listening. Some of the voices she did sounded similar, especially the guys, but overall it was a well performed audiobook.

Where do I even begin? Mary comes in again with a swing and a homerun. The novel opens up with an intriguing action scene and just keeps going. I’m all about the forced contact trope so that was a funny addition. I don’t feel like enough people appreciate a good love triangle where we loathe the third person. It was very entertaining. I would love to see where the sister ends up going with her life. The banter was hilarious and enemies to “lovers” made it even better. I say lovers with quotation marks because these books don’t include sex but I think enemies to sweetie pies doesn’t have the same vibe. Go read this so you can give me many thanks for the recommendation

This book needs 17 stars to accurately express how much I loved it! An incredibly clever mashup of Aladdin and Bluebeard. The final twist at the end is one of the reasons I loved it so much. I was not prepared and it makes SO MUCH sense. Also I loved the cameo of Azora. She’s still awesome 😂

This was such a creative way to combine Aladdin and Bluebeard. I appreciated how it had so many elements from both stories, but it didn't feel like it was forcing one or both of them too much.

I also felt like the characters were well-developed and pretty consistent, even as they did go through some changes. It felt like they had moments of growth, but never a complete personality change, which was really nice.
With this, the enemies to lovers felt really smooth. It didn't feel like they were enemies one minute and then suddenly best friends for eternity in the next. It felt more natural and gradual.

I thought the pacing was really good, too. It was fast enough that I stayed captivated, but not so fast that I missed out on discovering who the characters really were for myself. We got to see the romance happen, but we didn't have to be there for every single second of every single day and night, which was really nice.

The one thing I will say, though, is that there were so many cheesy and cliche lines, which, I mean, it's a romance book, so that's a given, but still. I found myself rolling my eyes several times, but other than that I really enjoyed it!

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I’m not even gonna bother with content stuff bc it’s Mary Mecham and she’s reliably clean. That’s why we love her (well, one of the reasons).

Where to begin…

I have never read a Mecham book I didn’t adore until this one… and even then, it was only the first 40%—50% that I didn’t like. I’ll explain why.

The banter wasn’t bantering like her other books, for one. I found myself cringing multiple times in the beginning. Examples:

• Zafir chuckled and stopped tapping the ring. “So much venom. Are you a woman or a viper?”
“Come closer and find out.”

That made me cringe so hard, but that is the beginning of a desperately mood-killing pet name. “Little viper.”

• Zafir cocked an eyebrow. “You’re quite an astute little viper, aren’t you?”
“I have my moments.”

• “Even for you, little viper?” Zafir said, the corner of his mouth twitching.
“Watch it. I could bite you.”
His smirk broadened. “Be careful. I bite back.”

There’s more, but you get the point. I don’t remember it being like this in Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice. About the first 30% of the books dialogue felt stilted and it didn’t flow like it should have. It was just… too much.
I quite literally almost DNF’d. However, the fact that I intentionally signed up for this ARC spurred me on.

I’m glad I kept going.

After about 40%-50% the cringe stopped/slowed. I’ve never been more grateful.

I also got a really good line from this book around 42% in:

• “Ah, but if the normal population was motivated to learn, they would be much harder to control. When people are only focused on fast entertainment, true knowledge and advancement pass them by and they become slaves to their own immediate gratification.”
— wise words from our homeboy Zafir, who, after he stopped with all the little viper stuff, was actually good.

(We are gonna ignore his over the top, wattpad forced enemies feeling, written by a 12 y/o, first encounter that I almost stopped bc of)

Speaking of that… for all of his talk about not wanting a woman to have to fear a man, he was REALLY aggressive and inconsiderate of her when she showed up covered in blood.
Having guards man-handle her, telling her not to bleed on your furniture, not administering healing things until AFTER she starts passing out, trying to interrogate her as soon as possible as she actively is bleeding out, and then being unsympathetic even after she explains what happened…

Doesn’t work with that supposed value of his.

I’m not gonna talk about her wiping blood on his furniture completely immaturely to spite him. That was SO cringy. I wanted to be embarrassed for her, but I couldn’t. They both sucked in the beginning.

BUT THEN THE STORY STARTED AND THAT ALL BECAME SEMI-IRRELEVANT!

I’m just gonna leave a little quote here that will make you very happy when you finish the book:

• “Wear green.”

IYKYK!!

Does anyone want character breakdowns btw? The plot was to save the FMC from the antagonist that tried to kill her, but really nothing happened with that until the 80% mark… so we’re gonna leave that bit alone for the time being.

Zafir. I actually loved his dynamic. He seemed very cut and dry for a while, but when I found out WHY he was that way, I actually loved it. I also think it was a really cool way to potentially portray substance abuse to cover trauma (trying to not spoil, so that’s very much not was this was, there is no substance abuse in this book, but— anyway, stop trying to twist my words. Just read the book.)
I think he is the first MMC from Mecham that I’ve read that felt real. The others are sweet, but he actually felt like an individual that you could read without it being tainted by the FMC POV. Idk if that makes sense (especially considering the whole book is her POV).
Anyway, I loved him after he stopped obsessing over calling Alia “little viper”.

ALSO I LOVED THE AZORA AND TARQUIN AND RAZO CAMEOS!!! ESPECIALLY THE TARQUIN ONE!!!

• Tarquin went after her, shooting a wink at Julian as he passed. “Find your own ball of rage. That wild woman’s all mine.”

THATS MY TARQUIN!!! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 (forever a favorite MMC. Go read Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice by Mary Mecham)

Now, Alia…

It’s not that I hated her as an FMC. I just didn’t like her. Hardly at all. She was better than some I’ve read, but she was almost too snarky. Take this quote for instance (she asked the MMC to tie her dress for her):

• “Are you embarrassed?” I teased. “Is the sight of a woman’s bare back too much for you to handle? Maybe you should occasionally actually look at a woman rather than keep your nose in your books. You’re right; this Julian will very much like watching you squirm. I do.”

“Are you embarrassed?” would have sufficed.
I felt like she had a lot of dialogue like that. It got old. Fast.
Thankfully after she started liking him it slowed down, but until then, I couldn’t hardly handle her.

Now, Rahil. I suspected that plot twist at around 60%. It was a good one though.
The take-down felt slightly anti-climactic, but this is a tomantasy, we’re not trying to expound upon the villain, we’re trying to grow a romance.

Also, for all my complaining about a lot of this, the romance progressed perfectly. I was really happy with the pace. It didn’t feel insta-lovey or too slow, it felt right.

Anyway, this is a long review. Gosh I hope the gifs show up. I looked up a random tutorial and then immediately believed it.

EXTREME SPOILER:

The magic from the wishes didn’t wear off… but Nadia came back from the gem and all of the wives were released… but those were wish-induced captivities. How? I don’t get how they could be released.

Review:
Alright, I want to start by saying that it is really not this book’s fault that it got 4 stars. I couldn’t really tell you why it isn’t a five-star for me because I could so totally see it being a five-star for many others and I know that it is and will be for more! It’s funny, it’s sweet, there’s a great plot, the characters are fun and different, the setting is super neat, I love the same world feel, and the plot twist at the end was awesome! (Also, super cool to have my first ARC-read, thank you so much, Mary Mecham!)
So yeah, I don’t know why I struggled to get that emotional attachment that I need with a book for five stars. Could it be the fact that I am writing my own book now and it changes how I read things? Maybe. The fact that I’ve been in a reading slump? Maybe. This being my first Kindle read? Maybe. The fact that I’ve been super busy and couldn’t read it all in one day or even a week? Maybe. I think you get the idea! I don’t know why! But I just want to be fully honest with my review, and for me, this didn’t quite hit my emotions. I was amused but didn’t laugh, kinda feeling! And I really wish that wasn’t true because it really is an awesome book!! So now that I got that out of the way, I’m going to explain some of the many awesome parts to you!
Alright, so I will admit I fell for a few things here in this book. (Tries aggressively not to spoil…) For one, the beginning? Not going to spoil what exactly, but… fell for it. I had trust and then… There we blades. Which was crazy. I’ll admit I misunderstood who our enemies-to-lovers love interest was, so that took more for a spin! I flew through the whole beginning of this, it’s extremely creative!! Wow, she brought a lot of things together! I’ve never actually seen Aladdin, so this was also really interesting in that respect too! There were elements from a whole myriad of things, including crossing worlds with two of her other books, which I have to say, I LOVE the idea of! I’ve always been a HUGE crossover person and I love it! I honestly wish the book was a good bit longer, which probably sounds funny considering all the time it took me to finish and what I said about not being fully in the world, but I think some more downtime to let us really feel the stakes would be cool! I love Tarquin, so super cool to find him! If you’re all in for petty, snarky, FMC, then you’ve got it with both Azora from Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice (who got a few lines) and Alia, the main character for this one! Admittedly, those characters can get on my nerves, probably because I just really like the guys and I want them to be sweet to them, but I liked Alia a good bit more than Azora, and even Azora was good! I actually think they are both really cool characters! I just don’t love them as much as people, but Alia was a lot sweeter, and I appreciate her for that! I truly know in my heart that this is a book and characters that the right person would hold as favorites! I’m afraid that I am just not quite the right person, unfortunately. I did love Zafir though and Nadia! And, I’m sorry people, but… Jullian! My poor buddy! They did you SO dirty, and I’m sorry. Anyway, I know we probably weren’t supposed to be a fan of Jullian and he’s not a good person by a solid bit, but I really like Jullian and I was SO voting for him to prove himself better than the thought and humble them, but alas… sigh… he didn’t. He just wasn’t quite as good as I hoped for him. His lemur is amazing though and I adore the name choice! LOL! Legendary!
The end plot twist did get me, so well-play, Mary, well-played! That was wild! And of all the things here? That got my feelings the most, my eyes widened and I just stared at it for a minute like… “Oh. Oh, ok.” The ending was wild, though I think it was actually a bit fast for my taste. Everything happened and was over, but then again, I’m a VERY slow-burn girl. For romance, if done well, for action, politics, pretty much most things. So, that may again just be me.
Some of the lines in here was WONDERFUL and it was WAYY too fun to be able to annotate!! I am not a write-in-my-books kind of person. I sometimes wish I was, but I just can’t quite do it. So if Kindle gets a point for anything, it gets that! I highlighted a lot! And I’m going to pull some up and share some notable ones here. Some of these are just really funny, and others are super sweet.
“See? When people turn the corners of their mouths up like this, that means they are happy.”
“Oh, so you do have blood flowing through your veins and not just acid.”
“It’s a piece of furniture. It doesn’t have feelings.” “Apparently, it does. Probably more feelings than you.”-ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT ONE
“As difficult as it is to believe, I am a man.”
“Make a note. The love potion works. The end.”
“Just don’t talk. Or move. Or exist.”
And a whole lot more!!!
Now for sweeter…
“You were afraid… No woman should ever fear a man like that.”
“He nodded solemnly, ‘Happy Birthday’.”
“Sounds like he’s human, then. I like humans more than statues.”
“You make it beautiful.”
And, again, a lot more!

Finally, I want to say, there were some REALLY fun scenes in here, and I love them together so much! But for the sake of not spoiling or writing this the length of another book, I shall not speak to them.

Content Concerns:
This book is what I would consider very very clean! It has no cursing, nothing beyond kissing, holding around the waist, obviously flirting, and they did cuddle, but were fully clothed and appropriate in my opinion. The two main characters did sleep in the same room because of plot reasons, but again, nothing more than him sleeping with his shirt off and they were on different beds. The kisses weren’t described in any kind of icky detail either! If you’re bothered by age-gap, the main character does marry a man who is said to be a good bit older, but they actually don’t do anything physical other than barely touch lips on their wedding day (Again, sounds weird, but plot things!) so I really don’t see why it would bother someone. It definitely didn’t bother me. Other than that, there is some violence, people are stabbed more than once, someone is choked, there is talk about thinking someone has murdered multiple people and is planning to murder more. I’m trying not to spoil thingsss… umm… There is very mild talk about the fact that someone was in a domestic abuse situation, and some characters deal with past grief.
If you want to avoid magic and dragons, this book is not for you. If you want to read about them, then welcome in, lol! The dragons are a small part, but they are here! Personally, I didn’t realize it would be this magic-focused, and I typically avoid a lot of magic in things, but I’m not holding any of that against the book or the author; that’s on my understanding of what I was getting. None of it is really dark magic, but it does include genies, potions, and spells throughout a good portion of the book, and is used mostly by good characters. I did know that it would have potions, I didn’t except it to be such a big part of the plot and I didn’t know about the spells. But again, not holding that against the author or book! I know that’s something everyone has to work out personally and with them and God, and I don’t even really feel strongly enough to say magic is wrong in fantasy, I just usually avoid it!

Conclusion: This is a super fun, clean, extremely creative fantasy, and I wholly support Mary Mecham continuing to make more like it! I wish I could’ve felt the connection more, but I know that a lot of people will! Super fun read and as a final quote…
“Then give me a signal, and I’ll strangle him for you.” (LOVE THEM! BYE!)

This is a review of an Advanced Reader Copy sent to me by the author.
Mary Mecham does it again! Bluebeard’s Bride is part of the multi-author series Displaced Fairy Tales, and I can only hope that the other books in this series are as great! This book is a combination of the stories of Bluebeard and Aladdin. When Alia agrees to marry Rahil in order to keep her sister safe, she knows her life is in danger. After all, Rahil’s previous (5!!!) wives have all been declared dead under mysterious circumstances. But Alia will do anything to keep her sister safe, including marrying a murderer. Then Alia makes a disastrous wish… and finds herself across the world, in the desert country of Pyren. There she is taken into custody by a rather intense (and yet attractive) vizier named Zafir. It’s hate at first sight, but Alia needs to find a way back to save her sister, and Zafir believes Alia has information that can help him in a quest of his own.
One of my favorite things about Mary Mecham’s books is that there is never a lack of snarky banter. This book certainly did not disappoint. I only wish there was more! Think of the Anastasia/Dimitri dynamic, and that’s Alia and Zafir. I laughed so much I was in tears! I loved both of these characters. I live far away from my family, so I understood Alia’s desperation to get back to the sister who needed her. And while Zafir seems to be a bit cold and obsessive at first, his behavior made sense the more I learned about him. Ultimately, I loved the way their relationship developed. And if you enjoy a twist at the end, don’t worry. You’ll get one!
Like all of Mary Mecham’s books, Bluebeard’s Bride is NO SPICE, but with plenty of high stakes and swoon. It does contain some kissing, violence, and blood. Though Alia is married at the beginning of the book, that is rectified, and there is no cheating. Because the book takes place primarily in Pyren, there is passing mention of characters from Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice, but it is not necessary to read that book before reading this one (though I definitely recommend it!). It is definitely suitable for teens or anyone who likes a high stakes romance without the spicy scenes. Thanks to the author for sending me this advanced copy! I’ll definitely be reading it again!

ARC reader here-
This is my first Mary Mecham book, and wow, did it deliver!! I loved the banter between Alia and Zafir, it was all the snark we were promised and more. Their relationship developed slowly and naturally, and the feelings that bubbled up felt totally believable as their dynamic deepened. The book is focused mainly on that developing relationship; the main action takes place at the beginning and at the end, but when the action is there, it is *intense.* And even being told the fairytales it's inspired by and the tropes it's using, it still managed to have a twist that I absolutely never saw coming, and one that perfectly brought everything together. Overall, quite the compelling read (I didn't want to put it down!) and I can't wait to read more by her.

I received a digital ARC copy of this book- and let me just tell you, this is one you will definitely want to pick up when it hits the shelves at the end of the month!

This book starts off moving really fast and it sets you up to get completely pulled into the story from page one. I had absolutely no idea how a satisfying ending would be pulled off but I was definitely pleased with the story arc and the tension between the characters! Mecham writes high stakes, but not explicit spice (hello swoon worthy first kiss scenes!) that hit the spot if you like the undertones of romance (which I do!)

If you like enemies-to-lovers, sarcastic and playful banter, forced proximity, and characters blatantly in denial about their feelings for each other- pick this one up!

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!! (Particularly in the “Content Warnings” section)

✏ A retelling mash-up between Bluebeard (which I only recently heard of, to be entirely honest) and Aladdin was an interesting choice to begin with. And the execution of such an idea was INCREDIBLE! Mary made such a cool story using both new ideas and pieces from the original.

✏ I definitely enjoyed returning to the world of Rapunzel’s Gambit and Assassin of Fire and Sacrifice, especially going to Pyren again and cameos from AoFaS characters. Brief references to Pollox made me rather happy.

✏ A few others things I liked were: that, despite what I assumed/felt presented, the FMC never cheats on her husband as the plot continues. The BANTER was amazing! And I loved that the MCs weren’t immediately attracted to each other physically to continue the plot or in lust, but connected on a deeper level and grew together before falling in love. I actually liked that he gets protective/upset and makes her change when she wants to wear something that is a bit suggestive (the outfit isn’t described much), but it never seemed controlling when he did but like he actually just wanted to protect her. I should have expected the lovely plot twist but I didn’t and I adored the way it caught me off guard.

✰ trigger warnings: the FMC was attacked by her husband (who, in fact, forced her to marry him) and he attempted to murder her. She deals with PTSD from that. She is able to divorce her husband due to the abuse. Zafir’s now-dead sister had an abusive husband and often covered her face in make-up to hide bruises and scars; it is discovered that Zafir attacked her husband after he found out.

✰ romance: One brief, non-descriptive kiss between the Alia and Rahil. Alia and Zafir share a couple of kisses (mild to fairly detailed, but still clean). A large portion of the plot consists of Alia attempting to “seduce” (gain the attention and attraction; it’s pretty clear it won’t go past that on any side) a man named Julian so he will pay for her trip home [it doesn’t happen, shocker]. They nearly kiss once or twice, but it does not actually happen. After the slow-burn and enemies-to-lovers, there is plenty of attraction between the MCs with embraces, a bit of noticing facial features or muscles, and the previously mentioned kisses, but Mary Mecham is still the Queen of clean fantasy.
This one still follows her boundaries for her other books, staying especially close with the romances in the books from the same world.

✰ language: perhaps in-world curse words, but I don’t recall anything sticking out.

✰ violence: Aside from what I said in the TW, Rahil (the Bluebeard character/Alia’s husband) murdered her previous wives and details about that are given (never very in-depth; just carefully stating how they died). Plenty of on-page fighting but never gory/gross.

✰ substances: potions are a large part of the book. At one point, Zafir tests a love potion they intend to use on Julian and accidentally overdoses after a second sip, resulting in obvious infatuation for Alia. It is handled carefully, and he is against it being used after the fact. Zafir regularly takes a potion to numb his emotions because he struggles so much to process the loss of his own sister.

✰ lgbtq: none

✰ religious content: a worship center is discussed, but no specifics as to who they worship.

✰ miscellaneous: loss of a sibling and parents. Alia suffers through nightmares about Rahil and his abuse towards her. Alia used to sell potions on the black market in order to make enough money for her and her sister.

⤷ Alia. She was SO snarky but so soft-hearted at the same time. Her love for her sister drives her decisions, and she never felt annoying or naive like so many other FMCs. I felt bad for everything she went through, but she handled it bravely, even with her struggles. And I just can’t help but re-mention her wit and humor! She was such a good FMC.
⤷ Zafir!! Honestly, he never felt very villainous but he was certainly calculating and cunning. He was still sweet, dealing with his own problems, and he was just as funny with his dry wit as Alia. Watching him slowly open up and be softer broke even my heart!
