House of Gray #4

Dark and Buried

The Davenports have arrived. Every single one of them.
Amy Davenport survived her first year as Gray Haven's heir apparent by learning when to speak, when to smile, and when to get out of the way. She thought her second season would be easier.
She thought wrong.
Nicolas returns from a five-month silence with a fiancée on his arm. Days later, the patriarch of the Davenport family arrives with his ancient brother, his daughter-in-law, and an agenda no one will name aloud. Between masked balls, secret correspondence, and a household pulled taut with old grievances, Amy must hold her position against people who have spent centuries deciding how power works.
One of them has already told her to her face she does not belong here. The rest are more polite about it.
Can she prove them wrong before the season breaks open what they are all pretending to keep closed? Or has she stepped into a storm she cannot survive?

I’m struggling to catch my breath…

Or so it feels, in the very least. This installment in this utterly phenomenal series moved at a breakneck pace, and I do feel as though I’ve just finished a long race. And what a race it has been!

We get answers to nearly all of the questions that have been burning since this series began. Unfortunately, as they often do, those answers only bred new questions that hang now, like dew, glistening on evergreen branches in the fog. Now I find myself wondering whether this series shall continue or end here with this book.

Let me hasten to say that if this is to be the end of this series that it ends well…quite well, in fact. After all, the beauty of those boughs dripping with dew lies in leaving them undisturbed. If this series must end here then I am content. As I’ve said before, there’s nothing worse than an author forcing themselves forward when that is something they aren’t truly feeling. I’ve seen too many series drag on like that, and I distinctly mean “drag.”

Regardless, I will also repeat another point I’ve previously made, and that is that this is perhaps the best of Izzie’s tales that I’ve read to date. Oddly, it’s in competition with another of her takes that she apparently launched on a dare from Mike Anderle, her Sassy Shifter series which gives this one a good run for its money. Both highlight her beautiful ability to capture and layer emotions one upon the other with simple prose. It’s the gift of her writing to convey such complex strata of feeling. Because nothing in life is ever really simple, and she makes that apparent without ever saying a word about it.

If you haven’t read the preceding books yet, don’t pick this one up. But absolutely pick up the first one and be prepared to be beguiled by these characters and the world in which they live. It is SO worth your time.

Amy has stepped into her role as heir for Lady Juliana Gray, ready to be part of the family, but the Davenport family has plenty of drama and darkness of its own. Nic comes home and brings his own surprises, and they are whoppers!
This is a do not miss in the series, where “the game is afoot” for Amy as heir, for Juliana and for the future of the House of Gray.

During the confrontations my hair was standing on end - the plot is sharp and crisp, Amy, Nic, Juliana, Rory and the household community support and protect each other - and when unexpected secrets come out, they are stunners.

Amy has guts and gumption and she needs it all, gaining strength and determination to protect Gray house from the dark side of the Davenports - astonishing ending and absolutely worthwhile read.

Evil visits

Amy is starting to feel like she will make a good Lady Gray when some unexpected visitors throw the house into chaos. We meet more of Julianna and Nic's family in this book of the series, and find out there are some sinister plans going on. This book was very intense and I could not put it down. I am very much looking forward to the next one.

What a roller coaster ride! I finished this book today and couldn't put it down since I had started it. What an epic tale with so many plots and twists within the plots. Even though, fellow reader, you COULD start with this book, DON'T! Start with the first book, you will not be disappointed 🙂.

Love the series

I hope there is a book 5. But 4 ended on a good note. I recommend you read the series starting with book one. I like how the characters evolved throughout the books.
