LIFE OF THE RICH & FAMOUS IS OFTEN MISERABLE - OR DEADLY... A beautiful young TV star, Jody Merrill, dies mysteriously and police are stumped. They are even more at a loss when the grisly remains of yet another actress, Jody's co-star, are found.
Detectives request the help of doctors Jill Raney and David Levine, police friends and detectives on their own. For Jill and David this is personal; they are heartbroken since both murdered young women were their friends. Furiously they resolve to find the killer: to skirt the law as they always do in cases of sex crimes, child abuse and murder; helping where cops' hands are tied ("No warrant? No problem!"), or in ways that police forensics never imagined.
The killer, capable of unspeakable savagery, must commit more murders in order to hide...possibly behind the glitzy cover of Show Biz Hell. As Jody Merrill called it, "That gorgeous, sparkly bubble that closes you in, bloats your ego in some weird, alternate universe where you lose all bearings, lose yourself. Fame is unhealthy."
COMING SOON! EMBRYO 6: RAZOR SHARP: A Jack the Ripper type killer is murdering male prostitutes. A transvestite, transgender women, a 17-year-old hustler - to him, they're all males. Police again ask Jill & David to help... (due in September)

Caught with friends laughing at their pea-green-colored drinking water; that was the offense; four of us arrested. Let go after a day, guess they decided we weren't worth an international incident...
Now excited about my new upcoming thriller, THE GIRL THIEF! Release May 30!
Former writer at Newsweek Magazine. Author of the 6-book EMBRYO medical thriller series; the 4-book Detective Kerri Blasco Police/Psychological Thrillers FEAR DREAMS, HER LAST BREATH, WATCHING YOU, & SHOELESS CHILD.
Also 7 standalone thrillers: INTO THE DARK, GIRL WATCHING YOU, WHAT YOU'VE DONE, CRY TO ME, THE WIFE LIST & THE GIRL THIEF. Also the U.S. Civil War thriller, KATE WARNE'S SISTER IS MISSING. (She was America's first female detective and a Pinkerton. The story takes place in NYC - a pro-South hotbed - at the outbreak of the Civil War.)
Doctors Jill Raney and David Levine from Madison Memorial were with their little son Jesse, settling him to sleep. It was 10.30 at night and they were not on call so looked forward to some long awaited sleep; unexpectedly they received notification that a friend of theirs, Jody Merrill had been brought into emergency in a critical condition…
The immediate shock and horror at Jody’s death, and what caused it, had the police plus Jody’s friends completely dumbfounded. They knew how careful she had always been. When suddenly a second young woman’s body was discovered Jill and David were shattered. Both women had been dear friends; they were struggling to understand why – so when the police requested their help they gave it gladly. In the past they had helped police uncover killers – their very natures plus their positions at the hospital made them a unique couple; in this case David and Jill were determined to uncover the truth of these horrific deaths.
But with the investigation came danger – the seedy side of the entertainment industry was filled with petty jealousies, bitterness and many secrets. And Jill and David were burying themselves deeply into it – along with their incredible work load the complete lack of sleep, pressure and tension was getting to them both. Being with little Jesse was the only thing keeping them sane. Would they find the vicious killer in time to prevent more gruesome deaths? And would Jill and David remain safe?
Another absolutely brilliant instalment in the Embryo series by talented author J.A. Schneider! I completely love this series – never a step wrong, always filled with tension, a terrific pace and gripping plot twists along the way. I can’t recommend Embryo 5: Silver Girl highly enough – but recommend the series be read from the beginning. An excellent thriller!
With thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.
I have read and loved all 5 of the Embryo series so far. This story line wasn't what it usually is with the others I've read.
Yes it's fast paced (would be as I've read it within a day), has all the action packed characters that the previous books have. Jill and David are caught up in the middle of a great action, fast paced and heart racing story. You never see the plot coming til you are like gasping for breath. Thinking it's one person and finding out it's someone completely different.
Hope J.A. Schneider writes more soon as I am so hooked and it was all thanks to a friend who said this series was nailbiting.
Embryo ..... Is a malignant genius tinkering with women's bodies? Embryo 2: Crosshairs ... A killer stalks women & an unborn baby. Embryo 3: Raney & Levine... A religious zealot targets a child & the hospital caring for him. Embryo 4: Catch Me ... A serial killer just targets couples.
and NOW....Embryo 5: Silver Girl ... A beautiful young TV star dies mysteriously...

"Embryo 5: Silver Girl" by J.S. Schneider
What I liked about this novel....
What will happen when a friend of Jill and David ends up dying after being brought to Madison Memorial emergency in critical condition? Will this be another one of this author's Raney & Levine suspenseful thrillers? YES! For Jill and David maybe Doctors however they are definitely a crime fighters who get the bad guys too. How will these two find this horrible killer so that there will be no more gruesome deaths? Well, to get all of those answers and more you will have to pick up 'Embryo 5: Silver Girl' to find out and noting that is this author's fifth Embryo series. Be ready for another one of this author's excellent thrillers as she takes you from the beginning to the end giving the reader a fantastic thrill of a read with some off the chart well developed characters..some old ones from other series and especially Jesse who is now eighteen months old. If you are looking for a love-betrayal glamorous side of TV stardom mixture you have come to the right place for a very interesting thriller that I would recommend as a good read.
I was absolutely thrilled when the author, Joyce Schneider, gave me a copy of her latest book in the Raney & Levine Thriller series, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Embryo 5: Silver Girl is a tightly woven gem of a read. The two main characters, Jill and David are a lovely couple who clearly adore each other whole heartedly, alongside their adorable eighteen month old son, Jessie.
The striking cover depicts the main casualty of the book Jody Merrill, the look on her face reminds me a little of the Mona Lisa - I mean the feeling: What is she thinking? What is she feeling?
It is so refreshing to discover a Thriller author like Joyce who doesn't feel the need to give the characters "Potty mouths". The tension and drama is there without spoiling it with bad language.
The medical terms are very well researched, I believe the author's husband is a physician and helps during her writing to explain the details she needs. I've learnt lots of interesting facts throughout this series so far.
I am really looking forward to reading the next in the series, a superb Thriller series which I highly recommend.
The first book in J.A. Schneider’s Embryo series, Embryo, gives the impression that the series is a futuristic medical thriller as the embryo in this novel is the first human fetus that is brought to full term outside the mother’s uterus and there is also some indication that there maybe some genetic enhancements as well. However, as the series progresses, it is quite clear that this is indeed not a futuristic medical thriller but is very much a crime thriller with two OB/GYN physicians and married couple, Dr. Jill Raney and Dr. David Levine, acting as detectives. In recent novels, the embryo which is now a child named Jesse and is the adopted child of Raney and Levine acts as a background character and is not really the focus of the series.
The latest edition, Silver Girl, continues the crime thriller theme, though I would say that it is more like a whodunit mystery than a thriller. The story begins with Jody Merrill, an actress in a popular TV comedy cop show, being murdered. Merrill, who has a severe allergic reaction to penicillin, is poisoned with the antibiotic. As she is dying from the allergic reaction she is rushed to the hospital where her friends Drs. Jill Raney and David Levine are waiting. Merrill’s death triggers Raney and Levine to switch from doctors delivering babies mode to crime fighting sleuths and the rest of the novel focuses on Raney and Levine trying to figure out who is the murderer.
I have no problem with doctors being detectives as many good series have this feature but in those series, the doctors usually have some kind of connection with law enforcement such as a psychiatrist or medical examiner, but OB/GYNs? Really? Really?! OB/GYNs are not what I consider the crime sleuthing types unless the crimes are more related to their occupation, such as a serial rapist. I also have an objection to doctors carrying guns. Many may argue that doctors should be able to carry guns to protect themselves but that seems to go against their motto ‘do no harm’. Yet, in this series David Levine walks around with a gun strapped to his leg. I don’t know about you but I would be a little unnerved if I knew that my doctor was carrying around a loaded pistol. Heaven forbid I forget to pay my bill on time.
Silver Girl is a fairly straight forward whodunit and for those who are into a mystery that doesn’t have too much gore, bad language, and graphic sexual content, then I would say this would be a good story for you. I think that this would make for a good young adult novel as the plot is not overly complex but yet entertaining. This is very much a standalone book and you don’t really need to read the rest of the series to enjoy it.
I love reading novels that are part of a series, and at times I do it out of the prescribed order, simply to learn if they stand on their own. Embryo 5 does. It is a story where each character is endowed with strong motives. Gut emotion, gut reactions. For the killer it is malignant jealousy and a misguided sense of being betrayed; for doctors Jill Raney and David Levine it is love and caring for the victims of grisly crimes: Jody Merrill, beautiful young starlet, and her co-star.
The author, J. A. Schneider, has distilled the richness of French literature, with which she is well versed, into her thriller. Fascinated with medicine and forensic science, she uses keen observation skills to show you the physical changes in appearance and behavior of her characters. “She closed her eyes, her body sagging against his, and he noticed that she was feverish with skin clammy and sweaty, which was odd — it didn’t connect with assault. Drugs on top of rape?”
Schneider builds the suspense using an assortment of tools, such as foreshadowing, with exceptional skill. “When the ambulance surged away they peeled after it, never guessing their role in the storm to come.” Her engaging style often includes staccato one-word rhythms, capturing the way her characters observe events before they have time to wrap them in fully formed sentences. “Lights. Cops. EMT’s swarming, mashing flower beds.” Together with brief sensual descriptions, such as “They didn’t want to hear the crunch over gravel as the gurneys bumped away,” the writing puts you in the skin of the characters in a manner that complements the fast moving action.
I had the opportunity to read this book and although it is the 5th in the series it was brilliant even though I have not read the first 4 novels. I can’t wait to catch up on the rest of the series!
Joyce Schneider has written a very suspenseful thriller….her writing flows nicely, you feel the characters true emotions and reactions to plot twists, the pace is perfect, the suspense grabs you and doesn’t let go! Her descriptions of the scene and the characters makes you believe you are there! I have found that lacking in other authors! Joyce Schneider is destined to be amongst the best thrill authors!
This book is so good that you will want to forget about everything else you have to do and want to sit and read it from beginning to end! All I could think about when not reading this book was getting back to reading this book! I highly recommend reading this book!
What a thriller! This is the 5th book in the Embryo series, but I think you would be able to read it as a stand alone. After reading it, you will only want to read all of the rest because they are that good!
David and Jill are devastated when one of their friends, a young actress named Jody is pronounced dead in their emergency room. The police ask for their help being they knew her and people are more likely to open up to them instead of the police. But helping carries its own risks and danger.
The author knows how to keep the story flowing and the reader on the edge of your seat. You won't be disappointed to read this book or the whole series. I highly recommend!
4.5 stars I was hooked from the very beginning. Anticipation builds throughout this book. The feelings of exhaustion and need to find the killer are passed on to the reader. When a TV star friend of Jill and David's collapses and dies unexpectedly in the Emergency Department all of the OB residents and interns are stunned. This is a murder. Shortly after Jody Merrill dies her friend Celie is found murdered too. The police once again ask for David and Jill's help in trying to solve the murder in the first 48 hours. Multiple suspects are found but who is the murderer?
Drs Raney and Levine are in the fray again. This time one of their friends has mistakenly ingested penicillin and another friend is missing, or is danger afoot?
Colorful, varied characters present themselves at every corner. Amidst the normal ER turmoil, somehow the docs manage to help the damaged friends and police, find time for friends and family, and keep it together.
Throughout this series, the characters get closer and show how even in chaos, love and hope are possible.
I really wish I had read the first books in this series before reading this one. This one was just okay as a stand-alone ... I felt a little lost where the characters were concerned.
That being said, I enjoyed what I did learn about them. There was plenty of action and I wasn't bored. I think I'd like to have a marathon of reading all those in this series. My rating might change.
All in all, not a bad book. I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries.
A young woman staggers out into a cold winter night with only a silver mini dress on, sweating depspite the cold. Cops on patrol see her, put on their lights, get out to help, and as she's struggling to breathe, call for an ambo. They get her to the hospital, her skin erupting into hives, but she dies fighting the staff trying to breathe. Yet, they never gave her epinephrine or intubated her on the ambo, which would be standard procedure. They learn in the PM that she had enough of the allergen, Penicillin, in her to kill her 10 times over...it makes no difference, the standard is intubation and epinephrine STAT. A ventilator if needed. Fluids. Possibly other measures. Jill and David are her friends. She is a TV star, and friends with her costar, who comes up the back stairs to her balcony, giving her time to escape to the street. Silver girl has a lot of odd things from prop and movie sets, including a set of nasty looking daggers, and one is gone. Since Jill and David have keys to her place, they go have a look around. The cops can't yet. They find enough evidence to get a warrant when they report there is something off about the trashbags...and Silver Girl's friend and costar is found brutally murdered by the still-missing dagger. Complicating factors include her entertainment lawyers are a husband and wife team and she had an affair with the husband; she hated the lawyer who started handling her case; there is a young woman in the law firm who looks like a younger version of the wife but is more aggressive - including sexually; the husband/philannderer is a recovering alcoholic with more slips than a lingerie store, and he is a mean drunk, physically abusive; Silver Girl (btw so named because of a song she likes, not the silver dress she had on) did an indie film in Africa, for which she got praise and a few movie offers; when she was in Africa, the lawyer she hates was there as well, and gifted her with a set of Victorian dolls that had something hidden in them, something she later discovered accidentally, and she bequeaths them to Jill and David; and finally - and most importantly- she quit at the party, said the writers were hacks - she had taken the character and changed her isn't on a female Keystone Kop, and her straight person was her costar, who played the only cop that would be her partner, turning the show from just another cop show into a hit show...she said the producer was uninspired. She had been a free clinic patient when she was a struggling actress (how she got to know our heroes), and they'd neen there when she got this break amd found out fame wasn't all it was cracked up to be. She had also dealt with cocaine addiction. There were 65 people at the party, most of whose livelihoods depended on the show going on uninterrupted, and thus would have a motive once she announced she was quitting. She donated to the hospital when they had funding cuts in OB/GYN, and, with her costar, loved playing with the kids in the hospital, esp the ones with long term illnesses. She left all but a few things to the hospital. This was a surprise both times. Silver Girl lived in a Victorian era house that has 2 story apartments, and her landlady is an old former showgirl, and she is a character. When she finally remembers who she saw coming down Silver Girl's rear balcony steps, it points them to think of the younger female attorney, because of the older one's sciatica...but she's not 100% sure the person is a female. Of course, Jill and David are there, helping in any way they can to break the case...which has some truly odd moments.
Jill, David and their friends have become a family including others from the community. The murder of their friend Jody takes them on many scary adventures.
say that Jill and David can’t catch a break is a huge understatement……. Silver Girl begins with the very suspicious death of Jody Merrill. She was a close friend to Jill, as well as others at the hospital. When they head to the ER as Jody is being brought in and treated, they know almost immediately that this was no accident. Jody died a grisly death that hits Jill and David hard. Once the police request their help, they race to Jody’s apartment to see what they can find. Upon their arrival, they know something’s off. As they are looking around the crime scene, they hear something and David tries to catch whomever was in the apartment to no avail. But, once things get rolling, another dead body is found and they know there is a murderer on the loose. One who seems to be targeting characters from Jody’s popular television show and they pull out all the stops to find who’s responsible.
They are pulled into the world of Hollywood agents, attorneys and wouldn’t you know it? Seems there was a torrid affair between Jody and a certain someone who wielded a lot of power and influence over her. When Jill and David delve farther into the goings on in Jody’s inner work circle, they discover that there were several who had motive, but figuring out who had the ultimate motive becomes a game of cat and mouse. Revelations are made and secrets are discovered, but will Jill and David be able to stop the murderer before someone else pays with their life? And, when Jill is caught in the middle of a twisted person’s endgame, will David get to her in time to prevent her from being a victim as well? Well, my friends, you’ll just have to read to find out.
J.A. Schneider has once again written a story that grabs hold and doesn’t let go. The story is shrouded in suspense and mystery, which I’ve come to expect from the Embryo stories. Jill and David are wonderful characters as are all of the supporting players. We get to see them all and we get to see how their miracle baby is faring as well. I did like the fact that we had a different kind of bad guy in this one, even though I was pretty sure who it was going to be before the big reveal. If you’re a fan of fast paced, suspenseful medical crime dramas, this series is definitely for you! Well done, J.A. Schneider! Very well done!
I've read all four of the previous books in this series, and it's been a real roller coaster ride of suspense, medical shenanigans, and relationship building. Book one started the romance between Raney and Levine, and gave us Jesse, the miracle baby. The relationship became a marriage, and the marriage became a family. All of this while some seriously deranged bad guys added that touch of adrenalin that kept me furiously turning pages.
SILVER GIRL is the first in the series to be a complex murder mystery. We are not faced with a madman trying to take out as many people as possible, we have two dead girls, and the need to find their murderer.
I love to find an author still finding his or her voice. I am always honored to find myself tagging along for the ride. I don't care if you are Stephen King or someone totally unknown, you have to start somewhere, and if you keep going, there has to be development. J. A. Schneider is developing her characters by making them more and more human from book to book. She is also honing the skills of mystery writers everywhere. I think she does a great job in SILVER GIRL of making you think through the possible suspects without giving too much away at any one time. There is definitely more whodunit here than adrenalin while still making the pages seem to turn themselves.
I don't know about y/ou, but I read books for a variety of reasons. I read to learn something new, to enjoy the dread of horror, but mostly, I read for the pure enjoyment of the stories and characters. Without giving anything away, there is a brilliant piece of misdirection in this book that pretty much made my day.
As much as I want to convince you to read SILVER GIRL, in all fairness, you have to read the four that came before to fully appreciate what is happening. These are all perfect books to take to the beach, read on a plane, or just for some time alone with a good book.
Jesse is growing. He's active and learning more everyday. People are still interested in his progress but it's not as bad as it was. David and Jill are working just as hard at the hospital. It seems they can never get enough rest between work and Jesse. Then a young, talented actress is just hitting her stride when she dies. David and Jill know the young actress and are devastated by her death. They offer to help the police as they have in the past on other cases. The list of suspects keeps growing. Everyone just wants justice for Jody, the young actress. Now, they just have to find the person responsible for all the mayhem.
WOW! I am consistently amazed by Ms. Schneider. Her writing style is amazing. She has the ability to make you look over your shoulder and be frightened of the dark too. Her characters make you feel like they are speaking directly to you. Telling their secrets to you as you move at a wonderfully set pace. I enjoy these EMBRYO books very much. This is number 5 and they get more complicated and more involved with each one. You get to know the characters as you would friends in your own life. I felt the emotions of these people. I wanted to help them find answers and warn them when danger seemed near. YOU will enjoy this series. I'm a fan for life! You don't need to read every book in the series. They do stand alone. However, if you want the full experience of this series, get them all! These are books you'll talk about, share and re-read over and over.
I didn't find any issues.
I gave this book 5 cheers out of 5 because it's a thriller series I've come to love! ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~
Dr. Levine and Raney are at it again. This book starts off with the death of a friend and well-known actress. Is it murder or is it suicide? The detectives need Jill and David's help to find out.
Jill and David are able to help the detectives by skirting around legalities and getting information to point them in the right direction to gather evidence to bring criminals to justice. Many people will talk and open up more to doctors, than they will with detectives.
Jill and David have both grown in character as doctors and civilian detectives. We have see them go from co-workers, to lovers, to husband and wife. They are raising their miracle baby, Jesse, and watching him flourish at a rate faster than the average child.
Jill and David not only have the support of the police department, but they have the support of their medical team. Their friends/co-workers are always offering to pick up shifts and help out so they can go follow-up at crime scenes, etc.
Not only is this a medical thriller, there is a great deal of mystery and suspense. I love the angles that are thrown into the novel. I would think, 'this person did it, no wait this person did, no wait!' Left me guessing until the end.
This author has a wonderful writing style and her stories are well crafted and knowledgeable. She has built her characters well and made them realistic, so that once I start reading, I am a part of the story. I can't wait to read more from this author!
Silver Girl (Embryo: A Raney & Levine Thriller Book 5) by J.A. Schneider Silver Girl (Embryo: A Raney & Levine Thriller Book 5) by J.A. Schneider starts with the killing of Jody, an actress who is friends with Jill Raney & David Levine. Another actress is also murdered.
"'People would tell Jody she was gifted,' Jill sighed, now seeing Jody being funny about her unhappiness. 'But she'd hoot & say, "Some gifts aren't really gifts. Can I return this fame thing?"
Jill & David's relationship continues to develop. She wondered about how good she felt when she was around him. "Can one person be like a tranquilizer to another? David was. She could breathe again tucked into his warmth, his patient, careful listening as she spewed her rage, her sorrow, talked a mile a minute about her morgue visit & the cops frustration.
'They're nowhere. Have nothing on anybody! They have no case!'"
I gave this intense suspense-filled thriller five stars.
This book Embryo Five -Silver Girl is a little different than the other five, somehow it seems a little darker, a little sadder, than the other four. The story begins with the murder of an actress friend of Jill’s and David’s, one Jody Merrill. Jody had touched David and Jill. Her sad life before she became an actress had drawn her to the warmth and family life that David, Jill, Jesse and the other interns had. David and Jill are devastated at her lost and strive to help the police find her murderer.
This book has a solid story and an interesting plot which pulls the reader along at a satisfying pace. The reader is captivated by the young family of David, Jill and the miracle child Jesse as he grows and blossoms and by the gripping twists and turns as we solve the murder right alongside of Jill and David. A very satiating read in the simply brilliant Embryo series by J. A. Schneider.
I really liked that this one was a step away from someone targeting Jill, David, and/or Jesse. I found myself intrigued by the idea of a starlet who is so lonely that she befriends doctors and the more I learned about the victim, the more I wished she wasn't dead (which is, of course, what an author intends for you to feel!). It was also clear that Jody wasn't perfect, what with being in love with a married man and being a former addict, but that just made her more realistic.
The other thing I loved about this one is I think this one is my favorite in the series so far.
My favorite medical detectives are back investigating a patient's death. Before long other corpus's are found making things murkier. This suspense series keep's you at the edge of your seat from beginning to ending. You also get to meet Jesse, a most angelic baby. I think after you read this book, you'll want to go back & read the rest of the series.
I’VE READ ALL OF THIS MEDICAL/THRILLER SERIES 5 BOOKS SO FAR. I FOUND THIS ONE NOT QUITE AS GOOD AS SOME OF THE OTHERS BUT I STILL ENJOYED IT BECAUSE I REALLY CONNECTED AND LOVE THE CHARACTERS. STORY-LINE WAS A LITTLE WEAK AND A BIT REPETIOUS I HAVE TO SAY I WAS A LITTLE DISSAPPOINTED BUT I’M STILL A FAN. ;D
I've enjoyed each book in this series and Silver Girl was no exception. I was hooked on the book from the beginning until the mesmerizing conclusion as I got a better glimpse into the world of the rich and famous.
I truly hope there are other books in this series so I can keep abreast of what is going on in the lives of Jill, David and Jesse.
Another edge-of-the-seat ride with this Doctor/Detective pair. This time a friend is murdered and they get very involved in the crime work. All I can say is - thank goodness their Hospital has 24/7 child care facilities!!!
All I can say is another exciting book . Made another page turner and so excited for a new one with this series loved them all from the begging to the end.highly recommend this series!!!!!!
I've read all of this authors books and have loved them all. I definitely recommend that you put this book on your must read list. You won't be disappointed.
