What a delight! This story was a mix of movies that I love ; Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, Night at the museum & Kingsman. It was so well written & action packed that I felt like I was living through it. My heart was racing in some parts and I was at the edge of my seat.
Santiago, the mmc, is a soft & socially awkward archeologist. He’s not one to make a lot of noise & he just doesn’t want to be perceived. Ali, the fmc, is a literal force to be reckoned with. It was amazing to be reading about those two characters because the role switch isn’t something I have the chance to read often. I love soft mmc’s but we don’t get enough of them. Their dynamic was especially rare because the mmc was really dependent of the fmc’s fierceness & strength. They complemented each other really well & were both smart but the fmc was more resourceful. She was amazing & I loved both of these characters so much.

The storyline & plot were just really compelling. I’ve always loved history, archeology & reading about different cultures & myths so this checked all of my interests. I hadn’t heard of that particular myth before so I was glued to the page.
The romance was a slow burn & I loved how their relationship developed. The scene in the water had me on my knees & that is the highest praise coming from me because I usually skip sex scenes. I was glued to the page I just know I would’ve folded.
This is a side note and more personal but I loved that there was a fmc that actually didn’t want kids. Like Ali, I raised my younger siblings. The youngest was born when I was 11 and my mom didn’t want him. He called me mom until I was 16 and he was 5 and actually understood I was his big sister and not his mom. I love him more than anything in the galaxy but I do not have the need for children for the rest of my life and this is underrepresented in Fantasy.

« I’ve never longed for kids of my own. I feel like I already raised one. »
It was just such an enthralling read. I had seen that it’s a standalone but I found myself thinking I would love reading about this universe some more & there’s a sequel for a new adventure announced so I’m really looking forward to it! I’ll come back on publication date with my quotes.

Something not too many people in the bookish world know about me is that my first marriage was to a Mexican man, and I lived for a year in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. We have one daughter, Annie. My mother was also a high school Spanish teacher and traveled fairly extensively to Spain and Latin America long before I was born. I ought to share the pictures sometime. All of these factors made me tell the publisher, “Yes, yes, yes!” when I was offered this title for review. I’m so happy I did because I absolutely loved The Lost Guardian by Natalia Hernandez.
The story begins in Los Angeles, where Santiago Rios works in a museum, not-so-secretly yearning to be part of an archaeological expedition. It starts off quickly, with Santiago learning of his grandfather’s passing and his last wish to be buried in Peru. The catch, though? His family is tasked with guarding the tomb of Atahualpa, the final Incan emperor. His grandfather’s ashes must be scattered there to prevent a curse from taking out a huge chunk of the population. Further catch? There’s a rumor that Atahualpa’s still-undiscovered tomb contains unbelievable riches, and tomb raiders are on the hunt for it. Santiago and the beautiful Ali race through the Andes to find the tomb before the raiders. Naturally, they grow close over the course of the adventure.
This story was one heck of an adventure based on the true history of Atahualpa. Hernandez did a beautiful job of blending facts with fantastical touches of magic. Although the story is told from Santiago’s perspective, he and Ali are both complex individuals who jump off the page. I was rooting for their story from the get-go. I did struggle a bit with Ali later on, but I count that as a commendation to the author’s writing. I was just super invested in Santiago’s journey and well-being. The spice developed slowly, and there was one open-door scene that remained respectful in its wording.
The Lost Guardian explores family legacy, cultural heritage, trust, and Santiago’s growing confidence as he follows his grandfather’s final wish. The writing is accessible and conversational, with clear dialogue and straightforward descriptions that keep the adventure moving while leaving room for the romance.
This book was the blast I didn’t know I needed. I highly recommend The Lost Guardian to readers who enjoy a blend of truth and myth.

But what an exciting journey this story takes you on! If you love Inca legends, adventures deep in the wild and isolated jungle, and a touch of romance, this book is for you! I really loved this story, filled with legends and magic… set against a lush, dreamlike landscape! The main characters are endearing—especially because of their flaws—and the writing is fluid and captivating. This story is a bit outside my usual reading habits, but it was undoubtedly a lovely discovery and a chance to escape for a while (and now I want to visit Peru—how clever!).

Fascinating Mythology with a Modern Twist
The Lost Guardian had so much going for it. The history, culture, and mythology woven throughout the story were fascinating and easily my favorite aspects of the book. Natalia Hernandez created a rich world that felt unique and well researched, and I found myself wanting to learn more about the lore behind the characters and setting.
While I enjoyed the world-building and mythology, the plot felt somewhat predictable. Perhaps it was just me, but I could see most of the major developments coming well in advance. That took away some of the suspense and left the story lacking the addictive, can't-put-it-down quality I look for in a great fantasy read.

This feels like Indiana Jones and the Mummy had a baby. It’s fast paced, had phenomenal character arcs and a subtle natural feeling romance. The pov is from the mmc and it was a unique way to read, added another layer and made you feel like you were learning what was happening with him. Really loved all the history and lore Peru that is woven in.
Love a happy ending and we all need a man who knows we’re his treasure , look forward to watching this couple continue their story as much as I enjoyed following the O’Connels on their adventures 💜

This was so freaking unique! Set in Peru and inspired by Incan history, The Lost Guardian felt unlike any romantasy I’ve read before. I loved following Santiago and Ali through the jungle as they searched for a lost tomb, solved ancient riddles, faced curses, and tried to stay ahead of their enemies.
The entire book played like an Indiana Jones movie in my head—but with magic and romance! The Peruvian setting and history made the story feel so vivid, and I loved that the romance added to the adventure without taking it over. This was exciting, atmospheric, and just so much fun to read!

Think Lara Croft vibes, but make the lead a hot, nerdy Latin man and throw him headfirst into a Peruvian adventure involving ancient Incan history, curses, danger, and mystery. Yeah… I was SOLD.
The Lost Guardian by Natalia Hernandez was such a freaking fun ride. The adventure and mythology had me completely hooked, and I loved how deeply the Peruvian and Incan elements were woven into the story. It gave the entire book this rich, atmospheric feeling that made the world come alive.
And our nerdy leading man?! LOVE. Give me a smart, slightly unexpected hero getting tangled up in ancient curses and dangerous adventures any day.
This genuinely felt like reading an archaeological adventure movie, and I had an absolute blast with it. If you love ancient mysteries, cursed artifacts, mythology, adventure, and a lead you’re going to become mildly obsessed with, put this one on your radar.

I will read any story with archaeology and so I knew I had to The Lost Guardian. It also certainly helps that it came from a favorite author of mine! The Lost Guardian is a fun and action packed story about family secrets, betrayal, and romance. I adored each archaeologist and historical fact. Reading The Lost Guardian felt like an adventure in and of itself. I loved that Santiago does not know what to do with Ali. We love a badass Queen and Ali is here for us! She's talented, smart, and beautiful all at once. I was instantly rooting for them and our slightly bumbling, obsessed cinnamon roll Santiago. If you love stories with puzzles, think National Treasure style riddles and history knowledge, then you have to read The Lost Guardian.

The Lost Guardian reminded me a lot of The Mummy and Indiana Jones. It provides the same exciting adventures, curses, puzzles, and riddles. Honestly, it would be the perfect next adventure movie.
I loved the addition of Peruvian history because I haven't been exposed to it much, so I found it interesting. If you're looking for a fun, feel-good adventure, this was a fun one to see come to life.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Entangled Publishing, Natalia Hernandez and NetGalley for the ARC of The Lost Guardian. All thoughts are my own.
I was immediately hooked on the premise of this book and loved the fact that this story was unique. It had the vibes of Indiana Jones and Lara Croft, and I also appreciated the face that it was the male MC who was going on this journey. I loved the Inca legends throughout the story and the adventure that Santiago found himself on after the death of his grandfather.
From the beginning I was thrown into the story filled with legend and magic while journeying through the dense jungle in Peru. Words cannot describe how much I loved Santiago and his nerdiness and how unsure of himself he was at the beginning of the story.
I had an absolute blast reading this story because you felt like you were on an archeological adventure with Santiago and Ali. This story took twists and turns I was not expecting but enjoyed nonetheless. I will definitely be picking up more from this author!

I was SO hyped. Lara Croft + Romancing the Stone + Raiders of the Lost Ark?? Take my money, take my firstborn.
Santiago is a cute nerdy archaeology PhD student who finds out his true heritage and ends up in Peru where magic is real. Love that for him. But he’s a mid-20s man who blushes and steals glances at his partner while they’re literally almost dying, and I have never wanted a love interest to just look at the cursed temple more. They say it’s adult, but it reads YA to me. 2 stars. DNF 51%.

Having visited Peru years ago and seeing the stories this book was inspired by, I was beyond excited to dive in! I could see the influences of for example Lara Croft and Atlantis!
It’s not often that I read books, where a man is the main character, but I honestly loved Santiago! He gave off those golden retriever vibes, his rambling about history when he got excited was honestly adorable and I just kept picturing Milo, except more buff when I imagined him! He is a very relatable character, and it really helped me connect to the story!
It is very noticeable that a lot of research has gone into the book. The history of the Inca’s, of Peru and the cultural importances are noticeable and I loved how I could also learn more about the country itself. The way it was woven into the story made it interesting to read on.
The plot itself was fun and engaging, with a lot of adventure and action happening throughout. The writing style made it an easy and quick read for me as well. I do think the plot was a bit predictable overall. A lot of the twists, I had guessed before they happened. Nonetheless, it didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the book itself.
Overall, The Lost Guardian was a fun read, and perfect for readers looking for a fun adventure with a magical aspect added.

As soon as the pitch mentioned ‘The Mummy meets Atlantis,’ I knew I had to request this book. And I’m glad I did, because I really enjoyed it!!
Santi can be a bit of a (cute) mess, but he’s incredibly smart. At heart, he’s just a young man searching for a link to his culture, who reconnects with his heritage, his grandfather, and grows into a more confident person throughout his journey in the Andes. I loved the Peruvian setting, not only for its fascinating mythology, but also for the landscape and delicious food descriptions (foodie one day, foodie always). Reading about them deciphering the clues was thrilling, and I liked that it was a real team effort; with different areas of expertise, they complemented each other well.
I wanted more from the romance. Santi and Ali shared multiple moments that deepened their connection, and the dynamic reversal with him as the scholar/reluctant hero and her as a badass fighter was interesting to read about, but the initial attraction was too fast. I enjoyed both characters individually without really connecting to their romantic feelings despite the cute moments. I would’ve also liked to see more of certain characters, and found a couple things to be repetitive. This rarely prevents me from enjoying a book, but I know that predictability might be a problem for some people. I still had a lot of fun even when I guessed plot points!!

As soon as the pitch mentioned ‘The Mummy meets Atlantis,’ I knew I had to request this book. And I’m glad I did, because I really enjoyed it!!
Santi can be a bit of a (cute) mess, but he’s incredibly smart. At heart, he’s just a young man searching for a link to his culture, who reconnects with his heritage, his grandfather, and grows into a more confident person throughout his journey in the Andes. I loved the Peruvian setting, not only for its fascinating mythology, but also for the landscape and delicious food descriptions (foodie one day, foodie always). Reading about them deciphering the clues was thrilling, and I liked that it was a real team effort; with different areas of expertise, they complemented each other well.

I loved the premise of this one. Incan/Peruvian history and mythology and all of the treasure hunting, booby traps, sneaky magic and clues you could want. I enjoyed the writing style and the story telling. I struggled a bit with the type of MMC in this one. Santiago is super smart, hot and nerdy (all lovely) but I struggled with how passive he was with his life, and how nervous and bumbling he was at every interaction. She had to save him at every turn, she drove the gettaway car (he didn’t even offer), and SO OFTEN, she had to protect him. I love a strong female but I really love a strong, protective MMC too. He did grow and become more confident throughout the story, but I didn’t find this dynamic very swoony or romantic. I fully recognize this is a personal preference. All in all, this was a fun premise with a bingeable writing style but the romance (which is my favorite part of a story) just wasn’t for me.

A fun fast paced treasure-hunting quest set in Peru filled with clever riddles, believable action, subtle magic, and tons of fascinating Incan, Peruvian, and astronomical history. So many rabbit holes to fall down researching Incan lore and the Atahualpa’s legend.
However this book is only from Santiago's POV and that made me really struggle with the book. I had to force myself to keep reading after 20%. I don't think I am meant to read many books that are exclusively from the POV of a man especially in a quest romance type book.
I liked both Santiago and Ali, they are both compelling and dynamic in different ways. I enjoyed the slow burn romance but honestly I wanted Ali to be our narrator even though I understand why its from Santi's POV.
Jose, the mysterious professor, was an absolute legend and stole all of the scenes he was in. An easy to read fun and entertaining adventure that is the perfect escape filled with interesting histories and smart characters.
I do think this book will find a lot of readers who loved it and I would be among them with a female POV.

If you like Tomb Raider, National Treasure, and Indiana Jones, then this book definitely belongs on your TBR! The Lost Guardian by Natalia Hernandez delivers a slow-burn romance wrapped in ancient mysteries, mythology, dangerous adventures, and hidden secrets.
As a HUGE Tomb Raider fan, I was absolutely living for this book! I loved how Hernandez wove in Peruvian history and Incan mythology while keeping a perfect balance of action, adventure, and romance. I also really enjoyed Santiago and Ali! Santiago is our super-nerdy MMC, while Ali is a fierce FMC with a nerdy side of her own. Although some of the plot twists were predictable, I still enjoyed them nonetheless. My only real complaint is that I wanted more Brooke and Jose! These side characters were lovely additions, and I would have loved to see them play a slightly bigger role in the story.
Lastly, I am saying this NOW. If this is ever adapted into a movie, can we please get Pedro Pascal to play the professor?!

This one was soooo fun !! It gave Indian jones but better bc I've never actually seen Indiana jones but I feel like this is what it probably was like ? Lmao santiago was thrust into a world he didn't know existed as an archeologist, he must lay his grandfather to rest at the tomb before the enemies bloodline does , so much happens along the way fighting for survival and racing against the clock , and booby traps!! Near deaths , betrayals , confusion, some romnace and it's just simply amazing, I'm excited for book 2!

Definitely pick this book up if you are an Indian Jones fan. Also, I would highly recommend this book if you were obsessed with the Nickelodeon show Legends of the Hidden Temple as a kid.

It’s similar to Indiana Jones. With a lot of action, treasure hunts to lay his grandpa’s ashes to rest and a little love story thrown in too, it was a fun read. I like the characters but could definitely call what was going to happen with Ali a mile off.

I don’t usually enjoy contemporary fantasy but this was done so so well and brought in history and magic and such a fun way. I appreciated that the book was from a male perspective and that the roles were also reversed with the MMC being soft and nerdy and the FMC being the badass protector. I did not know much if any of the history of Atahualpa but learning the legend and all of the adventure and puzzles combined on the journey had me very interested in knowing more and in Peru and Incan history in general.
I was fully expecting this to a standalone but to my surprise we got a little tease of book 2 at the end and I am very intrigued with where the author is taking it.

I love the flip of characters, the fmc is the protector, bada** one and the mmc is the smart one that is kinda the “damsel in distress” you could say.
Santiago (the mmc) is so relatable. He’s nerdy, anxious, over thinker, afraid of flying, etc. It’s ridiculous but cute lol. At times I wanna smack him haha like get yo sh*t together sir but that also makes me human, we all react different in certain situations.
Overall, the book is fun. Gives me National Treasure and Indiana Jones vibes. You can tell a lot of research was taken and worked on for this book. It leans very heavy on the history and culture so if you’re looking for something more fantasy this isn’t it but just like Indiana Jones, in leans a little bit on the supernatural side when it comes to the artifact’s myth and legends. Which is fun for me.

What I particularly loved was the historical foundation. Natalia Hernandez takes the real history surrounding Atahualpa and weaves it into a story filled with mythology, magic, danger, and discovery.
And she makes it FUN.
I didn't feel like I was reading a history lesson. I felt like I was right there, racing through the Andes, questioning everyone's motives, and wondering which ancient secret was going to get somebody killed next.
The romance was another pleasant surprise.
It's a slow build, and while there's some spice, it never overwhelms the adventure. The mystery and treasure hunt remain front and center, exactly where I wanted them.
I also appreciated that Santiago isn't your typical all-powerful fantasy hero. He's an archaeologist thrown into circumstances that are WAY beyond his job description, and watching him navigate that chaos made him easy to root for.
Was it a perfect five-star read? Not quite. There were a few moments I wanted a little more from, but the overall experience was so entertaining that I genuinely didn't want the adventure to end.
Here's who needs this book:

Make yourself a pisco sour and dive into this adventure meets magical realism romance. Thank you, Red Tower, for the opportunity to read and review The Lost Guardian. I first stumbled upon this story from the author’s Instagram page and was drawn into the South American adventure vibes. The book was an ode to Peruvian culture and still had all the romantasy tropes I love.
The world in The Lost Guardian leans more into the magical realism vibe than fantasy. Set in our contemporary world, the protagonist, Santiago, searches for clues to uncover the hidden tomb of the last emperor the Inca. Santi gives major reluctant hero vibes so good thing he has Ali to help him step into his destiny and face the magic surrounding this quest. Santiago is a history student in Los Angeles that gets thrown into an epic quest after the passing of his grandfather. Will Ali and Santiago find the clues and stop the curse that Santiago isn’t really sure he totally believes in before doom?
This book is adventure from the start and had elements of Peruvian culture sprinkled through every stage of the quest. I was salivating reading about ceviche, aji amarillo, and papa rellena. An added bonus was learning more about the Incas from Santiago which I thought was very nerdy and cute. I wasn’t the only one crushing on Santiago’s knowledge and rock climber physique! Ali was the perfect match for Santiago timid and cautious side. Their forced proximity of camping in the Andes was fun and charming. I’m honestly so happy they have each other.
What surprised me the most about The Lost Guardian was that the protagonist was male. I really had to think and consider when was that last time I read a book with a male protagonist and it was months ago. I think it’s pretty uncommon to find this in the romantic fantasy space. I am not disappointed with Santiago being center stage in this story because he was so well developed. If you are a romantasy lover that can’t say no to a forced proximity, you’ll love Santiago and Ali.
The world in The Lost Guardian leans more into the magical realism vibe than fantasy. Set in our contemporary world, the protagonist, Santiago, searches for clues to uncover the hidden tomb of the last emperor the Inca. Santi gives major reluctant hero vibes so good thing he has Ali to help him step into his destiny and face the magic surrounding this quest. Santiago is a history student in Los Angeles that gets thrown into an epic quest after the passing of his grandfather. Will Ali and Santiago find the clues and stop the curse that Santiago isn’t really sure he totally believes in before doom?
This book is adventure from the start and had elements of Peruvian culture sprinkled through every stage of the quest. I was salivating reading about ceviche, aji amarillo, and papa rellena. An added bonus was learning more about the Incas from Santiago which I thought was very nerdy and cute. I wasn’t the only one crushing on Santiago’s knowledge and rock climber physique! Ali was the perfect match for Santiago timid and cautious side. Their forced proximity of camping in the Andes was fun and charming. I’m honestly so happy they have each other.
What surprised me the most about The Lost Guardian was that the protagonist was male. I really had to think and consider when was that last time I read a book with a male protagonist and it was months ago. I think it’s pretty uncommon to find this in the romantic fantasy space. I am not disappointed with Santiago being center stage in this story because he was so well developed. Ali was an equally compelling character. She is fierce and determined, yet there is a gentleness to her that balances her strength. I loved how her practical knowledge of Peru and its culture complemented Santiago's academic expertise. Their shared curiosity and intellectual nature, particularly Ali's interest in astronomy, made them an effective team when deciphering clues and solving mysteries. Together, they helped each other confront their insecurities, creating a partnership that felt genuine.
One of the book's strongest aspects is its setting. The author vividly captures Peru's landscapes, history, and mythology, making them feel alive on the page. Several locations were described so beautifully that I found myself searching for them online afterwards. At times, I even wished I had a deeper understanding of Peruvian history to fully appreciate all the references woven into the story.
That said, the pacing was uneven for me. While some sections were filled with excitement and intrigue, the middle portion slowed considerably once Santiago and Ali continued the journey on their own. Although I remained interested, I occasionally had to push myself through those chapters. The final part of the novel, however, was much stronger, with rising stakes, confrontations with tomb raiders, and a race against time that kept me engaged until the end.
I also found the romance somewhat underdeveloped. While I liked both Santiago and Ali as individuals, I never felt fully invested in their relationship. Apart from a few standout moments, particularly near the climax, I struggled to connect emotionally with their romance. I was also disappointed that Brooke, introduced as Santiago's best friend early in the story, largely disappeared from the narrative. I hope there’s something planned for her in the future installments.

A lost tomb, riddles, ancient magic and a setting like Peru make for an interesting plotline. The vivid writing made it feel like I was right there with Santiago and Ali as the author has a gift with descriptions. In a sort of trope reversal it’s the academic MMC Santi who’s really timid and doesn’t believe his gay best friend that he’s a hot catch, while FMC Ali is braver and has fighting skills, and downplays her intellectual passions.
I really wanted to love this book more, but so many things just didn’t work for me. One big thing was the single POV of just the MMC Santiago. His character is all over the place from talkative intelligent nerdy academic, to highly insecure but lust after the pretty girl like a high schooler, to adonis body with bedroom skills, and they don’t blend well. I needed a break from being in his head sometimes. Another thing that didn’t work for me was the attempted romance. The book is like one long Escape Room date. We get lust from Santiago from the moment he sees Ali. From Ali we get a few curious glances and smiles. While they open up to each other over the few days they are together, there’s nothing that would lead me to believe in them falling hard for one another, or their spicy sex scene. I honestly almost DNF’d at that point, and I usually like spicy romance. A final thing, while learning about Peruvian history & culture was truly wonderful, I felt lost at times with all the names and vocabulary, and not knowing what they meant or how to properly pronounce them. A glossary would have been a wonderful addition.
Overall, I kept thinking that if this were a movie instead, where we could see facial expressions allowing us to feel the growing love, hear the inflection in their words, I think it would have worked much better. It’s like the book is a script with directions for the actors of how to look, react, move, etc. Sometimes the extra vivid descriptions and reactions taking place in Santi’s head almost take away from the story. The author tells us as opposed to showing us, the romance blooming, which may have been more believable if we had Ali’s POV too. I really appreciate the chance to read and review an eARC for Entangled Publishing.
