The Silent Reaping

Rate this book
The Valley was only the beginning…

After the events of the Valley, and with the safety of mankind secured, a tenuous peace between the Three Great Nations has been brokered. However, that peace is threatened when Ophelia’s sister unexpectedly returns from Balmorea with word of a plot against Ophelia’s life. Dangerous secrets from within the Balmorean court are revealed and amid it all, one truth becomes very clear—things in Balmorea are not as they seem.

Meanwhile, an evil magic, discovered far in the east, threatens the balance of the realms. Both the Land and Sea Vilici have attempted to destroy it, to no avail, and are once again forced to call upon Ophelia for aid.

Despite the target on her back, Ophelia is left with little choice but to journey into enemy territory and find a way to destroy the sinister magic before the realms are thrown even further out of balance. But the closer Ophelia gets to uncovering the truth, the more she discovers just how deep Balmorea’s blood-soaked secrets run—and the lengths to which some are willing to go to keep those secrets hidden.

I got the pleasure of being an ARC reader for this book. I loved the first book in the series The Violet Mage as it has a unique magic system, sweet love story, FMC that does what she must even when it terrifies her. But the second book The Silent Reaping… what a ride!! The authors writing style has really grown into itself and everything I love in the first book is back and then some. This book picks up right at the cliff hanger from the first book and starts off at a fast pace that never lets up. It takes you to new places with these characters and all new threats, loves, and adventures. You get to know more about some of the other characters in the best way in this book and the authors writing really resonates with me in this story. I absolutely loved everything about this book right up to the cliff hanger in this book! Now I can’t wait for the next book!! If you’re looking for a fun romantisy with great characters and great writing read the Kingdom of Ash and Water books one and two!!

This starts right back into the action. I am so excited to pick this back up and continue on with Ophelia, Elliot and their friends on this journey.

I love that story has such a strong plot and I am just left wanting more. The romance is there but it does not overshadow the story. It is enticing and makes the reader want to continue on to see where this will go. Also, the romantic tension in between Nell and George... I love it!

The end of this book has me jumping at the bit for book 3! It is at the top of my TBR when it comes out!

This was definitely a “just one more chapter” kind of book. Book 1 was a classic (very good) Romantisy. And Book 2 just comes in with a BANG! Now we have twists, fun character development, and more from the awesome side characters. I’m SO MAD that the cliffhanger has left me completely bereft!

Ugh, the ending! This series is really good. I completely visualize the scenes in my mind as I'm reading and it's almost like I'm watching the live action version as I read. When does book 3 come out??!?

“You are my solace.”

Thank you to the author - for the ARC and for writing this book! I truly truly truly enjoyed The Silent Reaping so much! I honestly may have enjoyed it a little more than the first book, if I’m being honest. I really enjoyed the tension throughout the book. The first book felt like a whole lot of buildup and this book really started off with a lot more action in my opinion. Right off the bat the stakes were high - and I also enjoyed that we had more POVs. Sometimes the addition of new POVs is awkward or weird but I felt Nell and George fit right into the story well.
Speaking of the new POVs, I do love Ophelia and Elliot a lot, but in this book, Nell and George stole the show. The slow burn, the tension, the heated misunderstands, it all added a lot to the book. It really kept me hooked while I read. I cannot wait to see more of them in the future. Ophelia and Elliot’s relationship was also great, it was refreshing to see a healthier dynamic in the second book instead of a breakup which a lot of people tend to do with their characters. It was a nice and welcome change. The spicy scenes between them? Loved it, especially the bathing scene. Quite literally chef’s kiss.
I feel like this goes with what I said above about liking this book better than the first, but the writing in this book was great. I feel like the author really grew into her voice and style more and it made this book feel more cohesive in a way. Maybe more confident. As a result, the pacing felt a lot better in this book and everything felt more natural. This book was very well done. I’m really loving this series. Especially that cliffhanger ending? I want (need) more ASAP!

3.5*

-Spicy, multi-POV sequel
-Check your trigger warnings

No real spoilers for “The Silent Reaping” but possible spoilers for “The Violet Mage.”

I’m a sucker for a quote. Always.

“She didn’t, but one thing she was painfully certain of was the fact that one could train with a blade or a bow or their fists at times of day other than the absolute ass crack of dawn.” ~Nell

We are dropped off smack dab in the middle of more drama–Aria has returned, badly hurt, with some really bad news for Ophelia (but also some happy news in the midst of the pain).

Thoughts:
-Raygon is really a one-note bad guy without any depth, but he is loathsome all the same. But now we have Reapers–assassins with blood magic and they are honestly terrifying.
-I feel like there could have been more world-building, especially around the Reapers and how the blood magic works.
-Ophelia and Elliot’s relationship continues to be very formulaic (but spicy). Her power seems to be immense but it’s pretty unclear exactly what she can do and there isn't a lot of discussion about controlling or enhancing it.
-I find myself really loving George. There is much more nuance there than with any other character.
-Nell is the bad-ass in this story, IMHO.

My conclusion–it’s a fun story. It’s a little longer than book one but it’s a pretty quick read and it’s entertaining.

Thank you to L.R. Powell for this advance reader copy!

*****ADVANCED READER COPY from author****

The Silent Reaping" by L.R. Powell is a masterful blend of gripping plot, layered characters, and haunting atmosphere that had me absolutely hooked from start to finish. Powell masterfully builds an eerie tension that lingers beneath the surface, keeping you guessing and turning pages long past your bedtime. The ambiguity in certain areas only adds to the unsettling quality of the story, making it all the more memorable.

The characters are truly complex and morally complicated, making their choices and the high stakes feel incredibly weighty. I found myself completely consumed by their journeys, and the natural, unforced twists kept me constantly on the edge of my seat.

"The Silent Reaping" is a beautifully unsettling, emotionally charged read that balances tension, mystery, and complex characters flawlessly. I was particularly drawn into Ophelia and Elliot’s love story, which is as sweet as it is compelling, and found myself incredibly invested in Ophelia's journey as she comes into her new role and begins to truly understand her magical purpose. If you love stories that linger in your mind long after the last page, this one is definitely worth checking out

⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ (4.5/5 Stars)

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this book in advance of publishing on 4/28/2026.

The Valley was only the beginning...

L.R. Powell delivers a hauntingly atmospheric sequel that raises the stakes and deepens the magic. If you loved the romantic tension and world-building of The Violet Mage, this installment takes everything to the next level.

What I loved:
There is a persistent, eerie tension that lingers beneath the surface. Powell is a master at building a "quietly unsettling" world that keeps you turning pages.

Ophelia and Elliot’s connection is as sweet and raw as ever, but the "spice" definitely kicks up a notch here

Ophelia’s journey into her role as the Vilicus of Mankind is empowering to watch. The characters feel layered, morally gray, and deeply human.

The multiple POVs introduce us to Lord George and Lady Nell, whose subplot is absolutely swoon-worthy.

My Verdict
While it starts as a slow-burn, the emotional payoff and world expansion are well worth it. Be warned: that ending is a brutal cliffhanger that will have you screaming for Book 3!

A must-read for romantasy fans who love complex magic systems, high political stakes, and "hurt-comfort" arcs.

✨ ARC REVIEW ✨

I really enjoyed this book! I felt this was definitely a step up from book 1.

There were more side characters explored and various points of tension and action throughout to keep you engaged. The FMC coming into her own with her magic and her new role was fun to explore. The romance kicked up a notch too, and in addition to some great spicy scenes, we also get a fun little side character romance.

That cliffhanger ending? RUDE 😅
You’re going to want to jump into book 3.

A couple of quotes I loved:

“But that is what we do with those we love—we take care with our words for the sake of their heart and feelings.”

“We can wash your hair last if you like, but I will burst into flames if I have to wait another moment to feel your skin against mine.”

I normally don’t comment on any editing-related points in ARC reviews, but in this case I think it’s worth noting because of book 1. If you liked the plot of book one but struggled because of editing issues pulling you out of the story, don’t let it stop you from picking up book two. I read an advanced copy and noted very few errors even before final editing, so I don’t expect you’ll have that problem again!

✨ARC Book Review✨

This story picks up right where things left off in book one and the chaos doesn’t end ⚔️🔥

Ophelia’s sister comes back home beaten, pregnant, and abandoned. She warns Ophelia about threats to her life… not everyone is okay with her role as Vilicus representing mankind. Allegedly people are being kidnapped and their life force is being used to fuel dark magic 👀

Ophelia definitely has her work cut out for her as she tries to rein in the terror.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Ophelia and Elliott. They support each other so beautifully. The relationship developing between Nell and George definitely had my attention… we love a slow burn 😏

I do like Ophelia, but sis really did walk right into the mess 😂

I really like Powell’s writing style. Her work reminds me of Jennifer L. Armentrout. She’s comfortable sitting in the moment and letting it breathe. Her character conversations always serve a purpose and naturally provide clarity about what people are thinking, doing, and their motivations 📖✨

ARC Review of The Silent Reaping by LR Powell.

This sequel absolutely delivered! This book was so magical, immersive, and tension filled ! From start to finish, I was completely immersed into this world the author created. We start where book 1 left off and you jump right into the action. The romance and chemistry between the fmc/mmc and side characters was fantastic. The spice was tasteful and was appropriately woven into the story. As for the plot, where do I even start? So much is revealed throughout the book, that I can see the author setting us up for some huge, high stakes action for book 3. I love how Ophelia has matured and grown as a character; she’s accepted her role and takes on those challenges head on. She’s a strong character, yet vulnerable enough that sometimes she absolutely can’t do it alone. I love to see this in an fmc. The Silent Reaping absolutely topped book 1 for me. I was thoroughly entertained the entire time. I’ll be sitting here patiently awaiting Book 3 after a cliffhanger like that!

What a joy to be reunited with Ophelia, Elliot, their friends and family after the harrowing battle at the end of The Violet Mage. But if our MCs were expecting a reprieve from the dark magic casting a shadow on the land they were sorely mistaken. The Silent Reaping delves deeper into the blood magic being used to sustain the Aegis in a fascinating exploration of the magic system. I was completely enraptured by the politics, power dynamics, and spy networks operated in this book.

It was interesting to read parts of the story from Nell and George’s perspectives that gave insights into the workings of the underground rebel groups, espionage, and growing dissent against the corrupt leaders of the land. The relationships and blossoming love stories were beautifully written with plenty of tension and conflict that ended in heartwarming resolutions.

However, in true fantasy fashion this story ended on a cliffhanger that already has me anticipating book 3!

The Silent Reaping picks up right where The Violet Mage left off. From page one, we are taken on a roller coaster of a ride. The story of Ophelia and Elliot continues to thrive and grow as a new love blossoms between two unexpected characters. The imagery is so distinct, I literally felt like i was inside the book.

The true magnitude of Ophelia’s duty to her realm is quickly realized and the journey that she embarks on is one that will have you on the edge of your seat. She must travel to the very same realm of people that wish to wipe her from existence. She continues to grow confidence and skill within herself and her magic.

The Silent Reaping is a bit darker and goes a bit deeper. Prepare to laugh, cry, and possibly lose sleep (like i did) trying to finish this beautifully written story. I feel head over heels in love with these characters.

The story’s ending has me already waiting for the next segment of the kingdom of ash and water.

This book has been much anticipated, and it did not disappoint! First if all, you have to read the first book in the series, The Violet Mage, to fall in love with Ophelia and Elliot. Those two make me swoon. A female character with heavy responsibility and a supportive, but equally strong male counterpart who adore each other and have sizzling chemistry? Yes, please!

The Silent Reaping not only continues Ophelia’s story and her quest to live out her calling, but we get to know George and Nell (Ophelia and Elliot’s besties) from a different perspective. The fiery back and forth between those two is so fun!

My only complaint is that this ended on yet another cliffhanger. I mean, I knew this is part of a trilogy and would keep going, but that ending just made me gasp. The third one needs to come out ASAP.

Fun read for those who like Spicy Romantasy reads with open doors and intriguing magic.

I enjoyed continuing the story of Ophelia and Elliot, to my surprise, we had multiple POVs in this book and I absolutely loved getting to know our lady Nell and Lord George. 😍 although i know the main focus was about Ophelia and Elliot, I couldn't get enough of George and Nells encounters and wanted more! 😅
" she frowned."Don't do what?" "Speak of yourself as if you arent the brightest star in the sky," he replied. 😍 SWOOOOON
Sweet Aria 😪 I would love to continue her story as well with Marius.
Overall, Ophelia has another quest to save mankind from horrible magic happening in another kingdom. Even though she's been trying to manage everything else, she doesn't back down and continues to push through to do what she was meant to do. Even with all the turmoil, its still a cutesy love story and is an adventure you don't want to miss.

This is the romantasy I love - friendship and trust just smothered in lust and intimacy. I adore Ophelia and Elliot, their journey from angsty rivals at the tournament to now captured me! Their banter is perfect between them, the kind that makes you giggle and blush!
I was not expecting the little “side plot romance” with Lord George and Lady Nell, stole my heart. The romance in this series is just god tier. The side characters and sister bond were a perfect touch to the story.
And the plot and writing is everything I love in fantasy. The imagery with the world and magic was so well done. Ophelia is a strong and vibrant FMC - the Vilicus of Mankind. This is a 5 star sequel! Thank you for choosing me to ARC read! I can’t wait to read book 3 - I will eat up every update for it because of that cliffhanger!

Fast paced, with lots of danger!

This was much faster paced than book 1, with lots more danger throughout…and a few more steamy scenes!

The story involves assassins, secrets, kidnapping. There’s a lot of tension and danger in these areas. But through it all Ophelia has Elliott, but also starts to find her own strength and confidence while trying to fulfil her duties as Vilicus.

That ending though! Is she dead? Is she alive? What is beyond that barrier? And who’s going to heal Elliott??

I like how the story is focussing more on George and Nell too, which gives more perspective to the story. Although their love story was a little unexpected at first, but makes complete sense. But understanding their turmoil they hold due to the situations they face really adds depth.

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is an ARC Review.

4.5 ⭐️ read for certain. We love when book 2 is on par or maybe even slightly better than book 1. I think the author really came into her own mind in book two. The character development was also present. New love stories you saw coming began to form. I still say there is a naïveté to the FMC that doesn’t align with her age but I appreciate the FMC being of modern consenting age. I usually do not like when the FMC & MMC are separated but bc she started developing other love stories I didn’t feel that missing connection. There were still some parts that were predictable but overall very well built out and I am ready for book 3.

Okay, okay, okay!!! This was so good! It was such a journey and an action-packed book! I really enjoyed the character building and the fact that Nell and George were a much bigger part of this book compared to the first book.

The first book was hard for me to get through because most of it felt like it was about Elliot and Ophelia’s romance, and not the actual plot. But this book was completely different! The romance was still a very present element, but it felt much more natural and the spice was 🔥.

This is definitely an instance where book 2 is better than book 1, and you will see me running to pick up book 3 when it comes around!

So I’m gonna need book 3 ASAP! This cliff hanger was worse than the first! How you leave us hanging like that L.R. Powell!
But honestly this book was really good. The beginning kicks off with a bang, with Aria’s arrival and some surprises coming along with her. The memories that Ophelia uncovers are heart breaking. But these women are SOOO STRONG!
I really enjoyed the light hearted travel that happens towards the middle of the book with Ophelia and Elliot. There is some fun banter and new characters during that time as well. I won’t spoil The Who, but I loved seeing a second romance blooming with 2 different charters.

Review of advance copy received by author-Are you kidding me?! I’m so obsessed with Ophelia and Elliott’s love story and Ophelia’s journey to come into her new role and understand her magical purpose. Their love story continues to be as sweet as book 1 and the fear, anger and tension throughout their land keeps you sucked into the plot. Equal parts romance, storytelling, and world building. Exactly what I want in my Romantasy stories! And the little love stories building with our side characters, my heart melts. L.R. Powell, where’s the next book?!

I dont know if i can take a full breath yet... the end once again knocked me off my feet. Book 2 delivered. Its action packed with so many close calls. The suffering reaches for your heart through the pages, and it's going to leave you devastated more than once. Emotions are raw... the unknown has the mind racing, and the Vilicus of Mankind ... where has she gone, Aaaaaaaaah!

THE BOOK LEFT ME ON A HIGH... LOVED IT!!

I cannot stress it enough how much I love this series!! I love the new life this second book brings in terms of showing us how Ophelia’s duties as Vilicus of Mankind tie in and the world/political climate of the story. I absolutely cannot forgive that cliffhanger though I’m so on edge for the next book already!! If you loved the Violet Mage I can guarantee you’ll love the Silent Reaping even more!! I also loved the little subplot love story between George and Nell it’s absolutely adorable.

I wanted to love this more. The concept is solid and the world is interesting, and I really love how it picked up from the ending of book one. There’s strong potential here with the dark magic and political tension woven in, and I can see what the author was aiming for. But for me, it didn’t fully grip me until much later in the story, so it ended up feeling more like a slow build than an instant hook. I caught my attention wandering off through the story, though.

The way this second story began was perfect! It flowed so well from the first book! The author did a great job at expanding this world and growing her characters. She brought in different character perspectives that added to the story. They left me speechless and choked up. The story had me on the edge of my seat! Great read that i could not put down! L.R. Powell…HOW COULD YOU END THE BOOK LIKE THAT?! I mean I was really enjoying myself with the additional love story with other characters and then also loving how the MMC rescued the FMC in what I thought was the end. Little did I know that 5 pages later you end it like that? This story snuck up on me in the best way and now I will be staring at a wall until book 3. Thank for the advanced copy! I better be on the list to read the next one 😭.

This book has such a moody, almost gothic feel to it—I loved it. The Silent Reaping builds on the world in a way that feels richer and more dangerous, and the sense of looming consequences is constant. The writing is vivid without being overwhelming, and the darker tone really stands out. There’s a strong undercurrent of power, sacrifice, and tension that keeps you hooked. Definitely a solid continuation for the series and worth picking up if you enjoy fantasy with a darker edge.

I was gifted an eARC version of The Silent Reaping.

The book came out swinging, picking up right where the first book left off. The plot was fast paced- without feeling rushed- and it kept its hooks in you. Every page left you wanting more and to find out what happens next. The characters were realistic and made you feel invested in what happens to them next.

If you’re looking for a romantasy read, definitely give this series a spot on your TBR.

I got this book as an ARC read and I am so grateful to L.R. Powell for this early read! I read the Violet Mage a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it! It was a fresh read with new concepts and a really cute love story. The Silent Reaping was just as great! It was an easy book to devour, and man, the cliff hanger it leaves you on really sets you up for a book 3. I can’t wait to read the next one!

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ it was a good continuation of Ophelia’s story. Pacing was harder for me in the middle but I see that it needed to happen for the overall story for while they are traveling.

The idea of the silent reaping was crazy and added to the story line. I continue to enjoy the unique story line and elements. I’m excited to see what happens after that cliff hanger and with George and Nell.
