ARC REVIEW
Let me start by saying that I’m not a difficult reader to please, but I do think this book should be marketed a little differently.
I also find it a bit disappointing when tropes are used to promote a book but don’t quite match the reading experience. If a book is advertised as full of angst and yearning, that’s what I expect to feel.
Technically, the characters fall into the New Adult category because of their age, but the story itself felt much more like Young Adult.
Even the conflicts with Joel, Fiona, and Mikayala didn’t have the emotional impact I expected and felt more like plot devices than moments that truly added to the story.
This book had all the ingredients to hit me right in the heart, but the emotional execution fell a little flat for me. I never truly felt the romance develop, and because of that, many of the romantic moments—the walk by the canal, the flowers, and Logan cooking for Alex’s mother and sister after only two kisses—felt a bit rushed rather than heartfelt or believable.
So take my review with a grain of salt, because this book simply wasn’t for me. If you’re looking for a sweeter, more YA-feeling romance, you may enjoy it much more than I did. I just wish it hadn’t been advertised as a angst, yearning romance, because my expectations were very different from what I got.

Logan and Alex first meet when Logan visits the cafe Alex works at. Logan not knowing how to order a coffee drink and Alex patiently walking him through it is the most adorable meet-cute! As Logan’s become more frequent, their friendship blossoms and continues to grow until they share their first kiss, which is just as sweet as those lemon squares Logan loves.
The character growth, of not only the main characters but secondary ones as well, is fantastic. Alex needs to learn to trust again and realize that Logan will be there for him when things get hard. Logan needs to believe in himself and realize that there is more to him than football and his injury doesn’t define him. The build up of the secondary characters makes me excited to see what else in store for the students at Montgomery University.
This is the first book I’ve read written by Jake Grenier and you can bet that I’ll be reading the first book of this series as well as any other ones I can get my hands on! Jake’s story telling has a way of getting you emotionally invested in his characters. It’s genuine, heartfelt, vulnerable, and has you cheering on that happily ever after! This was such a heartfelt, emotional romance that completely pulled me in. While it's built around a loose jock-and-nerd trope, it's really a story about healing, self-discovery, and learning to believe you're worthy of love again.
Alex and Logan are both carrying so much emotional baggage, but in completely different ways. Alex has spent years putting everyone else's needs ahead of his own while trying to hold his family together, making it hard for him to trust anyone with his heart. Logan is struggling to redefine himself after a career-ending injury leaves him questioning everything he thought his future would be. Watching these two slowly find comfort, friendship, and eventually love with each other felt incredibly natural.
Their first meeting at the café was absolutely adorable. Logan's complete lack of coffee knowledge made for such a sweet and memorable meet-cute, and I loved watching their friendship develop before the romance really took off. The slow burn was perfectly paced, making every milestone in their relationship feel earned.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the character development. Alex and Logan both experience tremendous personal growth, but the supporting cast shines as well. Every secondary character felt like they had a purpose and helped create a world that felt authentic and lived in. It left me genuinely excited to spend more time with this group in future books.
The writing has so much warmth and heart. There are emotional moments, but they're balanced with humor, hope, and plenty of genuinely sweet interactions that left me smiling. By the time I reached the ending, I was completely invested in these characters and couldn't have been happier to see them get the future they deserved.
If you're looking for an emotional MM college romance with a lovable coffee shop meet-cute, a beautifully developed slow burn, meaningful character growth, and all the feelings, I highly recommend picking this one up. I'll definitely be going back to read the first book in the series and keeping an eye out for future installments.

Heart to Break is a fun, light-hearted romance and a fun (loose) take on the jock/nerd type of trope. This is the second book in the series, but the first that I have read by Grenier, and I loved the way he writes.
Alex is written to be so powerful and driven, yet his relationship with men makes him so apprehensive and almost scared, which is this big difference to how he’s handling the rest of life. He has become the man of the house with his mum ill and has stepped up to look after Naomi and gotten a job for extra cash. The way he leads in the newsroom and the effort he puts into his writing is so determined, I just love that the lovey side of his life has him feeling so small.
Logan is written almost the opposite. He is feeling small and unsure in most aspects of his life after his accident. I love that he has been written this way. It has been a few months since the accident, but his whole life changed that night, and his dream was crushed in an instant. It feels more realistic to me that he is still confused and concerned about his future and the relationships he has with those around him; they were built around the old him. Even though this is Logan’s queer awakening, he is much more sure of himself in this department as he very slowly comes to the realisation about his sexuality, and I just loved this dynamic.
The side characters were written just as wonderfully, with the more important ones having their own character development from start to end. None of the characters feels like they’re there just for the fun of it. They help to build the world around the main boys; even if not all of the characters are positive towards them, they help to build them into who they need to be.
I cannot wait to read more books in this series!

My feelings with Logan and Alex's story are conflicting.. I was going to give this a 3 star rating but as the story progressed I ended up enjoying the story and the characters more, and I really loved the ending. So, that's why I gave it a four star rating but that's what I mean when I say I'm conflicted.
The beginning of a book should draw the reader in and make them completely captivated in wanting to know more and keeping their attention.. and unfortunately that just didn't happen for me with the beginning of this book. I think a lot of it had to do with the pacing, I think it felt a bit clunky in some parts, I think it was too slow in the beginning and then sort of stalled in the middle, and then picked up pace at the end. I like both Logan and Alex together, I thought their playful dynamic with each other was really cute and I enjoyed reading about them together. Especially when Alex was wondering if Logan was flirting with him or just being nice.. and when all of Logan's friends suspected he liked Alex as more than a friend before he did, those scenes were a joy to read about.
I loved how these two stepped up for each other in different ways and how even when Alex tried to push Logan away, Logan stayed anyway and kept showing up, I LOVED reading about that. I think from the halfway point of the book all the way to the end is really where I started fully enjoying this book. The beginning just didn't captivate me as much as the rest of the book did, but I think overall this is still a great book!

This book was definitely not what I thought it was going to be. It was so much better. It’s not your typical sports or friends to lovers romance. Or the typical MM romance either. It’s a totally unique kind of reading experience. Alex and Logan were absolutely adorable together. They are two people that you can’t help but want the absolute best for always. Alex is such a relatable character. It’s so genuine and I just wanted to wrap him in my arms constantly. He deserves someone who won’t leave. And he deserves good things to happen to him. Logan felt like a lost puppy at times for sure. He’s had a lot happen to him. I just wanted him to have the support he needed. Watching these two orbit each other and seeing the connection develop was so endearing. It’ll squeeze your heart and fill your soul with warmth. Alex’s patience with Logan had me completely melting into a puddle. But it was the genuine friendship they build in the café that had me so enraptured by their story. It felt so natural and was exactly what they both needed. The chemistry was always burning underneath it all though. And when it comes to surface it’s such a sweet heat. The support and understanding they give one another will pull at heartstrings you didn’t know existed. And it will leave you feeling like a middle schooler who just kissed their crush. Butterflies and heart flutters galore. This book is full to the brim with cute moments and genuine care. It will have you believing in real love that’s meant to last.

Alex is afraid as he has lost his Dad and his ex and is afraid everyone will abandon him. Because his mother has MS and he has a young sister, he feels the need to be a caregiver and work a part0time job to help with expenses. He is also vying for the job of editor at the school newspaper. He is also a journalism student who works hard for grades but he will not depend on anyone to help carry his load.
Logan was a football star who is hit by a car when he and his ex-girlfriend are arguing. His knee is so badly damaged he cannot play and his plan had been to go on to the NFL. He feels lost as his girlfriend also drops him. He has no friends left, no girls handing around for the star and decides to try coffee which the football players were not permitted. He meets Alex the barista who gives him a smile, offers often to help Alex while Alex helps him with his course work.
I would say the really superb part of this book is the development of the secondary characters. The other baristas, the current editor of the student newspaper, the mother and sister. They make the book fun.

Second book in this series! Sometimes book 2 doesn’t live up to the first but this absolutely did! This is about Alex masons friend from the paper and Logan callums teammate
Even though it was a low spice book it was absolutely adorable!
Alex is juggling his new barista job school the paper and taking care of his family because his dad left after his mom was diagnosed with ms
Logan is adjusting to his new life after his car accident took away his ability to play football so he’s trying to figure out who he is
Their meet cute well meet cute as friends was adorable when Logan came in for a lemon square and then back in again for a coffee without coffee LOL
They became friends quickly and they bonded
Alex was in a relationship with Simon who was selfish af
Logan’s ex broke up with him because he couldn’t play anymore
Their relationship was the definition of a slow burn they had their friendship foundation first and Alex was into Logan but it took Logan a bit to see Alex as more than a friend especially with homophobic ex team mates starting rumours
When they finally gave in it was so damn sweet! The ending of the book the author said he hoped it felt like a warm latte on a cold day and that’s exactly what it is
Just a sweet book about two boys falling in love and learning to lean on each other when they needed it

So, I really have mixed feelings about this book
I really enjoyed the first three quarters of this book. The background stories of the main characters was well thought out, and the natural way that their relationship developed was cute and quite heartwarming (despite all the homophobic slurs-not from an MMC). I was invested in their relationship and eager to see them get together. Unfortunately the last quarter lost me.
The third act breakup was a little too forced, and although I think that the motivation behind it was well established, I also felt like it wasn’t quite thought out-like how was Alex being busy the same as his father leaving? It could have just revolved around being absent, or focused on the family needing support, but the framing of it as leaving just didn’t quite line up for me.
The second thing I struggled with was the spice - the entire book would’ve fit quite comfortably into the YA category, until the last chapter where there was a non-descriptive, non-penetrative barely spicy scene that suddenly pushed it over the line, but also didn’t really add anything to the story.
Had either one of these things been different I would’ve bumped this book up a star, but between the two of them I just couldn’t quite find my footing with this one.

I most certainly went into this book knowing I’d probably get irritated with it the way Escape Velocity had me feeling. What do I know? I got irritated with it, but not nearly as much as Escape Velocity—that book was so bad for me, but this one is just an under the skin kind of deal.
I personally think the description should have been:
“Hi, I’m Alex Fields, I’m the biggest issue known to man. I’m never the problem, everyone else causes the issues that arise. My entire personality is overworking myself and sabotaging my own life! My boyfriend is great and caring and understanding, but I’m still going to be a dick to him after a mistake, teehee.”
The consistency of the character traits is a plus I guess for the book, but good grief, I’m tired of hearing about the ‘woe is me’ from Alex. The author must love creating the most aggravating characters for his books and sticking them with a golden retriever for a boyfriend. I can already predict that Simon is the self-sabotaging character for his book.
The book does move at snail speed I guess in terms of romance, but has these wild moments where you’d expect the boys to have been together for at least a few months, but nope. It’s a few (if that) weeks. So if you like a slower-ish paced book, this is the book for you!
If you liked Escape Velocity, you’ll like this book, they go hand in hand tbh.

The author must love creating the most aggravating characters for his books and sticking them with a golden retriever for a boyfriend. I can already predict that Simon is the self-sabotaging character for his book.
The book does move at snail speed I guess in terms of romance, but has these wild moments where you’d expect the boys to have been together for at least a few months, but nope. It’s a few (if that) weeks. So if you like a slower-ish paced book, this is the book for you!
If you liked Escape Velocity, you’ll like this book, they go hand in hand tbh.

This book was like a warm hug and it was also so nostalgic to me. As a very nostalgic person I was in heaven. It was just so cozy.
The fear that both Logan and Alex had was so realistic and you really felt their pain and anxieties about the things they were going through. Both of these boys deserve the world and I’m so glad they found that with each other.
I loved the way this book flowed. It didn’t feel rushed and I loved seeing their relationship turn into something more than friendship. They had an instant connection and it was such a breath of fresh air the way their relationship changed.
To Logan, falling for a man was pretty new to him and Alex was so patient and understanding with him. My precious cinnamon roll 🥹

I am usually a total sucker for a slow-burn romance, but this book completely missed the mark for me. Reading this book felt like drinking a smoothie made with extra bananas, but the author forgot to add any other ingredients. It was okayish to consume, but ultimately bland and missing all the flavor.The book is incredibly long, not because the plot is complex, but because it completely loses its momentum. The pacing is painfully slow. While I really liked the initial meet-cute and the concept of two people from different paths struggling together, their actual chemistry fell completely flat. The romantic interest develops out of nowhere, and the author just drags it out until you are rolling your eyes.To make matters worse, the side characters are incredibly annoying. They have zero emotional impact and feel like they only exist as background filler because the main characters need people to talk to. There were a few heartwarming moments, but they felt mechanical like words just written on a page rather than a lived experience. It was sadly just a boring read.

“Heart To Break” is SUCH an engaging read. I read it in one day on my commute to and from work, and couldn’t put it down once I got home. Alex and Logan’s story is just so realistic and adorable because of the balance between reality, romance, trauma, and meet-cutes. Both these boys go through a lot, but it was so comforting to see them find comfort and strength in each other. The pacing was really well done, the characters were well thought out, and the inner conflict of both Alex and Logan felt real—not dramatized, not overly simple, just real. My heart hurt for them in moments of conflict, but I was soaring along with them by the end. Reading this book definitely made me interested in the other romance stories in this universe!

Heart to Break by Jake Grenier is such an impressive, heartwarming story! 🥹❤️ After a terrible accident shatters Logan's dreams of becoming a pro football player, he finds himself wandering and trying to figure out a new path. Then there is Alex, who already has so much on his plate—balancing his studies, working at the college journal with ambitions to become editor-in-chief, and caring for his ill mother.
Both of these characters are so vulnerable; they truly are two hearts that could easily be broken. I loved watching their story and budding relationship unfold. Alex helps Logan find himself again, while Logan steps up to give Alex the time and space he needs to finally rest. It is a perfectly balanced story. I absolutely loved it! ☕✨

Absolutely amazing read! The saying "Grass is always greener on the other side" could not be more false in this book. After a devastating injury Logan is learning very fast that coffee is life to a academic college student. Alex happens to be the new barista that helps feed into his new addiction. Both learning to navigate burdens and expectations placed on them they develop a friendship that goes beyond anything they've ever felt before. This is a story on learning how to let someone see the worst parts of you and still want to be a part of their lives. This book is a sweet heat, with tons of affection and acceptance. I received this as an ARC and absolutely fell in love with Alex and Logan!

Logan and Alex are so afreakingdorable! I loved them from the start they were easy to get invested in and root for their HEA. I enjoyed how their story developed as they navigated the challenges in their personal lives.

This was a quick, easy read. I enjoyed the beginning of the book, watching the relationship develop between the main characters.
I was disappointed once the story shifted to all of Alex's problems (Alex was infuriating at this point!). I know books usually have to have some conflict, but this would've been so much better without that.
I thought it was strange that Logan didn't know what 'unmoored' meant. How could a college-aged person not know that word? Also, so much of the dialogue was just way too cheesy!
I enjoyed this one a lot more than the first book in this series. It would be great readers who enjoy young adult or new adult books.

I thought this was a sweet read! I didn't really fall in love with either of our protagonists, but I think that was more of me not being in the right frame of mind- I found them to be well-written, and their romance was definitely enjoyable. It was low spice until the end, which was a nice change of pace for me from most romances being SEXSEXSEX. I'm definitely looking forward to more from Grenier and from this series.

4.25 stars! Alex and Logan spoke so much life into each other it was so heartwarming to see. The way Alex helped Logan realize just how much he’s changed for the better and how strong he is for everything that he’s been through. And how Logan helped Alex realize that it’s okay to trust someone and let them help carry the burden of whatever’s going on without fearing the worst. The character development was so good not just for Logan and Alex but for characters like Fiona and Mikayla. I was wondering if we’d see Kai and Simon more and knowing that they’re getting their own book is great!

This was a pretty cute story. The story was clean and was slow burn. Logan was trying to find himself after an accident left him unable to play football, which was his dream. While Alex needed to help support his family while juggling school and his journalism dream. Together, Logan discovers he is not so straight and that not all athlete are heartbreakers for Alex. It really was a cute story of self discovery.

I have not had a book make feel a hope for beautiful love like Heart To Break did. The book start to finish had me hooked immediately and rooting for both Logan and Alex, whether things worked out or didn't. The way Jake has written this beautiful story was so visual you could nearly smell the coffee in the cafe or feel the intensity between the characters. This book won a permanent spot on my bookshelf and it should have one on yours too!

What a solid read!! I’m a sucker for “slow burn” romance and Jake did just that! Watching Alex and Logan both progress in their own mental health battles as well as Logan’s feelings for Alex and watching how perfect Alex was with his mom and how he was so selfless and really battled his own selfless needs and to actually go for Logan in the end was so bittersweet.

This was a great summer read; easy to follow plot, relatable (and adorable) characters, just the right level of conflict and tension, and an ending that matched the flavour of the entire story. This is the second book I've enjoyed from Grenier, and I appreciate his storytelling. Looking forward to the next one!

I had mixed feelings about the first one in this series. Even though I loved Callum and Mason. Their journey felt a bit off.
This however was great from start to finish. Loved the characters individually. Loved their struggles and I loved how they worked together.
I am happy that I gave Jake Grenier and this series another chance and I look forward to Simon and Kai.
