Miranda Carpenter’s been nominated for most virtuous woman on campus, and faces quite the temptation in the form of fellow professor Noah Yeager, a modern day Adonis of sorts.
Definitely enjoyed Ms Leto’s portrayal of Miranda, who despite her lack of much practical experience, is refreshingly forthright and applies her studiousness to hands-on opportunities with gratifying joy and results.
Setting: May 2000; university of Southern Florida campus; Don Faison Spa and Resort at the beach
Theme: Falling in love; restraint; self knowledge vs denial; experiencing sensuality
Characters: Dr. Miranda Carpenter: professor/author of the science side of sex; nominated by her sister, seconded by Noah for ‘Most Virtuous Woman’ (sponsored by Campus Institute for Safe Sex); outgoing, dramatic younger sister spilled the beans about Miranda’s lack of sex life, sharing info from her diary – about her first (and only) uncomfortable sexual experience. Reserved; self-confident; loves gardening; self-controlled.
Noah Yeager: psychology professor; failed (he blames himself) first marriage to high school sweetheart and failed almost marriage to another woman – leading him to decide he was not made for commitment and to numerous short term, both know the rules, let’s have fun sex relationships; though attracted to Miranda, they are just friends and colleagues – he respects her, they worked on a successful paper together; he believes one must ‘confront the conflict’. Man of integrity; good looking; likes to play.
Summary: When zealous campus newspaper article is harsh on Miranda in regards to her limited past, therefore her professional qualifications, Noah decides he needs to help her out (as he likes her, as he had a part in her nomination and putting her in the spotlight), and knowing that she was likely to let things go, and the facts speak for themselves, he decides she needs help confronting the conflict… so he sits in on her class – and asks the questions the students are thinking …. And she realizes what he is doing, and though embarrassed, she takes it in stride. And he tells the class he will take her out on the date (as required by the award committee)… She reluctantly agrees to join him at a formal function where the announcement for a grant will be made.
They have a good time (a little dancing, a little dinner, a little conversation)… and almost kiss as the limo stops in front of her house… she invites him to help her garden the next day, and she would feed him lunch… he gets there late (with lunch), and in helping her clean up (with a hose on a secluded side of the house) we get a very sensuous scene of water, and touch, and orgasm.
But it scares him off – more than he bargained for – she has layers he didn’t anticipate. He wants her, he is afraid of a deeper relationship that he will eventually fail her in; she wants him, is trying to keep her heart safe while indulging in the delights of his body, but realizes he won’t commit. Then he invites her to a weekend resort (at the beach, which he knows she loves)… she goes (each with their own room)… and when he doesn’t invite himself into her room the first night, she sets up a seduction in a nearby abandoned house – with candles, and wine, and quilts… and a thunderstorm. Passionate lovemaking ensues. The next morning, she tells him she loves him – but doesn’t expect any more of him… but she hopes… a week passes – both are miserable –
He goes to the presentation of the Virtuous Woman award – her speech is about her own self discovery of virtue (being true to oneself) and of male virtue – courage – acting even when afraid… but he already knew he could not do without her. ahhhh
Academic setting didn't feel very authentic to me, characters were pleasant, but ultimately unengaging. It wasn't so bad I couldn't finish it, but by about half-way it was definitely a skim-to-get-it-done read.
