Outstanding debut novel from James Dawson! Action packed from the very beginning. Great cast of characters and amazing dialogue in a raw, gritty, sometimes humorous crime noir that leaves you wanting more. Definitely looking forward to more from James!

I am a sucker for a debut author, and jumping into They Took It Inland by James Dawson felt like catching the first spark of what could turn into a really strong series. The first loop thrown at me was Zane Bruce losing his partner Paul Duncan very early in the story. No spoilers since it is in the blurb, but I am not a blurb reader, so it hit hard. Their banter and energy were perfect, and that sudden absence shifted the tone in a way that made me lean in and watch how Zane would carry the weight. Small details like nods to movies, actors, and even soft drinks made the characters feel lived in, flawed, and memorable. Then there is Zane and his dad, a relationship that is about five stages past complicated, and that ending had me sitting there thinking I am absolutely going to need more.


This is a gritty crime story where power protects its own and money decides who survives. Corruption, secrets, and influence run through every layer, but what really carries the book is the father and son dynamic on both sides of the law. Zane’s grief, his history, and the shadows tied to his family keep pushing him forward, while the quiet spark of a budding relationship with his superior adds another interesting thread without slowing the momentum. For a debut, this one swings big and sets the stage for something that could grow into a compelling series. I am already anxious to see where Dawson takes Zane next.

James Dawson’s debut novel, “They Took It Inland” blends suspense with a hard-hitting dose of an intense thriller and adds a teasing touch of dark noir into a must read for 2026.

But this is a debut novel in name only. Dawson is a creative spirit who creates fiction that sounds like it comes from the frontpage news. His mature writing style delivers a traditional smoky-room storytelling pulled from the deep well of genre legends.

The cast of characters is flamboyant in their roles—there are no sleepers here. In addition, Dawson’s characterization exposes the raw elements of the human psyche, with a much time spent pulling the threads of conflict from within the moral conscience.

The series lead, Detective Zane Bruce, bleeds law enforcement. But he is not one to always color between the lines to handle the hard-core elements of SoCal crime.

“They Took It Inland” is a must for every bookshelf. This is not the last we will see of James Dawson.

So overall, this was a fine debut. I found the story compelling and the characters (for the most part) very well developed. One thing I REALLY didn't like was the banter from Zane with his partner - the constant repetition of the living in the mom's basement was as annoying to read as it was for his partner to hear. And good on the author for making me FEEL that, but I didn't necessarily WANT to be annoyed by that.

I hope this series continues, as I'd like to read a second book and see how the author progresses. If you're a thriller/crime novel fan - this one is probably for you!

A very solid debut novel by James Dawson and a thank you for sending me an advanced copy of They Took It Inland. It is a gritty crime noir story set in and around San Francisco. The author's descriptition of the setting was very good. The writing is crisp and fast-paced and the chapters are short. The banter back and forth between the characters and the dialog between them is the highlight of the book. Zane Bruce is a flawed character and that makes it good. The relationship between him and his dad will be something to look forward to in the next book. Overall, a solid 4 stars from me.

Action-packed with great characters and awesome dialogue that definitely kept me entertained. The short chapters were also a plus.

This book felt almost instantly like a classic. It's a dusty noir in a modern world with flawed but endearing characters. The complications of family and integrity and corrupted legacies are laced throughout a tense and compelling tale. A strong showing from a debut author, it's a declaration of things to come from Dawson in this genre. I'll be pre-ordering his next, for certain.

Good crime novel set in California. Dialogue and character interactions were the strong point that kept me reading well into the night. Dawson's background as a comedian bubbles up through the metaphors and pop-culture references scattered throughout. I hope we have not seen the last of Zane Bruce.

Don't miss this debut crime novel! Great twists and turns. Strong characters. Intro to Detective Zane Bruce. I read a lot of mystery/crime novels and am very excited to find a new series to anticipate ... good work, Mr. Dawson!!
