Quick Summary: An ebbs & flows, second chance romance
My Review: The Summer That Changed Us by Billie Swann is book #1 in the Changing Tides series. It was released on 3/31/26.
About the Book: "Ellie never stopped loving Jackson. She’s just learned how to live without him.
Sometimes love isn’t about getting a second chance. It’s about finding the courage to take it."
In My Own Words: Past secrets whispered in private and kept in silence devastate two lives and the loving relationship they once shared. Can revealed truths finally lead to reconciliation?
About the Characters: The characters in this story were textured and flawed. I appreciated being able to see the life transition of the leads - from teens to adults. I thought it was done well. Seeing them grow from their younger selves into the complex adults they were in the present added depth.
The family function/dysfunction challenges involving the parents felt realistic and believable.
A Favorite Character/Scene/Story Element: Jackson's mom. Her journey pulled on my heartstrings. (I wish I could say more, but I don't want to spoil things for other readers who may or may not feel as strongly as I do about the what of it all where she is concerned.)
My Final Say: I liked this story. It was emo-rich and had depth.
This story had a prologue that grabbed me right away. While the first-person voice took a moment to settle into, I was ultimately captivated by the dynamics at play.
I think this book was about life, love, relationships, and healing. It presented a picture of how our past and our choices shape our future. In the end, I can say that Ellie and Jackson were able to move forward. Where their hearts were concerned, they found a flow that worked out for them. Honesty and transparency were key.
Parting Thoughts: The path toward the reconciliation of hearts may be fraught with tension pain, and misunderstanding, but those things may be inevitably necessary if meaningful healing is meant to take place.
Other: I think this is the type of story that would translate well as an audiobook. In my opinion, I think it would come across even better, if that makes sense.
Appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher (Milburn Ink), and to NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to review a digital ARC of this title. It was a pleasure. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
This beautiful debut is as complex and compelling as it is heartwarming and uplifting.
The Summer That Changed us is a quietly considered novel, emotional and page-turning, but not overly dramatic with its romance tropes, instead it feels true to life and 'real' rather than sickly sweet. It's romance but in the real world.
Billie Swann tugs at the heart-strings as she tackles some really tough themes but she does so with heart, compassion and a true delicate touch. It's a novel that puts romance at the heart of the story, but doesn't shy away from the real world issues so many of us face.
Despite Ellie feeling so wrapped up in her past mistakes, this story feels less about the trauma of a past and more about her finding a way to allow herself to love again. Jackson makes the perfect leading man and with so many intricately drawn characters, I can't wait to see who the author choses to focus on for book two in the series.
A new author - but one I will most certainly be reading more of.
thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Billy Swan for providing me with an ARC of this emotional yet heartwarming book.
this is a second-chance romance that leans into emotional trauma during teenage years (without spoilers), longing, and unresolved feelings. i’m always a sucker for a good second-chance romance, and The Summer That Changed Us delivered.
the relationship between ellie and jackson had a lot of depth, especially considering the fifteen years that had passed between them. i could feel their connection from the very beginning as the emotional pull between them always felt there.
jackson was, without a doubt, my favorite. such a likable MMC. he was steady, emotionally present, and genuinely caring. not just toward ellie, but as a person overall. his feelings felt grounded and sincere, and i found myself rooting for him the entire time which made me wish I had his POV too.
ellie, on the other hand, was more challenging for me at times. there were moments where her decisions felt frustrating, sometimes even selfish or a bit self-absorbed. i also would have loved to see her stand up for herself more and fully own her choices.
i do wish we had a bit more insight into how both MCs dealt with missing each other during those fifteen years of no contact.. i think, that, and ellie not being the most likable at all times made me give this 4 stars instead of 5..
that said though, i genuinely enjoyed the journey and the emotional core of this story. if you enjoy childhood/teenage lovers to adult second-chance romance, lingering feelings, and character-driven love stories rooted in trauma, this one is definitely worth picking up.
would love to read Billie Swan's next books to explore her universe further :)
Review for 'The Summer That Changed Us' by Billie Swann
'The Summer That Changed Us' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Billie discusses/includes baby loss, cancer, loss of a parent, teenage pregnancy and grief. Billie includes these difficult themes in this book and they are discussed in length although in as sensitive manner as possible.
I was absolutely MIND BLOWN when I discovered that this ABSOLUTE BEAUTY is actually Billie's DEBUT novel, not that you would ever think that!!! This extremely talented lady has written this book as if she has been writing for years!! It is also the first book in her 'Changing Tides' series and I am hoping and have my fingers crossed that it will be coming out soon as I NEEDED it in my life the second I finished this stunner!!.

The first thing I have got to say is an absolutely HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the AMAZING author Billie Swann!! I was absolutely SHOCKED when I had finished this stunning page turner, went to add the rest of her books to my basket and realised that it is actually her debut book!! What an absolutely EPIC debut novel it is and if THIS is what you can create for your very first book then I just cannot wait to see what on Earth you will come out with next!! You seriously have to grab your copy of this absolutely gorgeous page turner today!! The descriptions, the characters, the settings and just absolutely everything about it is just BEAUTIFUL!! I mean seriously I just cannot describe just how emotive, beautiful and heart warming this book is!!! There are just no words. I mean I'll try but my advice is stop reading this review and GET YOUR COPY NOW!!! If you love romance, emotive, heart warming, unique, sweet, second chance stories… Do you know what...whatever you like to read just give this a go and you will NOT regret it!!! You can thank me later when you have discovered a new favourite author, book and soon series, just like I have!! As you can tell I thoroughly enjoyed this addictive and sweet page turner!!! I am not going to go in to the actual storyline as the publisher has done a beautiful job of telling you everything you need to know in the synopsis and you also have that stunning cover that will suck you straight in! This book is so much more than a standard romance and has a gorgeous storyline ram packed with friendship, heartache, family, loss, ice cream, sun, a gorgeous dog, sand, sea, scrummy goodies, emotions, romance, second chances, love, resilience, regret, hope, bravery, STUNNING SETTINGS, drama, jealousy, memorable and lovable characters, teen pregnancy, multiple timelines, tragedy and just so very much more. It truly has something for everyone. Words really cannot do this book justice!! You genuinely need to clear your schedules before you start this beauty as you will NOT be able to put it down! I absolutely devoured it in one sitting of a few hours while relaxing in the sun on my Cornwall holiday. However, it really does not matter if you are reading this with a hot chocolate curled up by the fire or with a cocktail in the sun as Billie will transport the readers into Dorset where you will taste Jackson's milkshake, feel the sun on your skin and smelling the sea air at the turn of a page. This is all thanks to Billie's incredible emotive and evocative writing skills that really will suck you into the pages where you will feel as if you are standing next to Ellie throughout. Billie has done an incredible job of weaving the storyline through multiple timelines from when Ellie is just 15 years old and back to when she is an adult and she does this seamlessly ensuring there is no confusion. Along with the previous topics mentioned Billie also covers the struggles that Jackson and Ellie face such as losing a job, a home, struggling with family drama, jealousy of a sibling, teenage pregnancy and loss and that is just to name a few. therefore, there is always something going on which will keep you immersed and captivated throughout. I gave up trying to tell myself just one more chapter as I was left needing to know what happened next each and every time! I love that Billie has included how Jackson felt with the loss of their child as many authors seem to forget the Dad and what he goes through but Billie ensures we understand that the loss affects Jackson as well. One of the things I really loved about this beautiful storyline is that it is unique to me as I had never read a storyline like it which always makes a lovely change after reading so many books as it is getting harder and harder to find something new. An absolutely stunning read that will live on in my mind for a very long time while I eagerly and impatiently waiting for the next book to come out! This really is a perfect and stunning introduction to this promising new series!
Clear your schedules and grab the tissues as you get lost in this laugh out loud, addictive page turner!!
I absolutely loved the larger than life, unique and just fantastic characters that Billie has created for this book!! They truly are a breathe of fresh air. Thanks to her fantastic descriptions it truly feels like you are right next to Ellie throughout. I absolutely loved meeting all the characters and was rooting for them throughout. I must admit that I did want to scream, shout and shake Ellie at times with the way that she was treating Jackson and even speaking to her friend Reeni. However, the fact that she annoyed me did just make her more realistic as we cant love everybody! I also absolutely loved Jackson, Milo and their absolutely amazing Mum Sophie who was so supportive, loving and such an amazing woman even when she is struggling with her own health. I absolutely HATED Ellie's parents, especially her Dad for the way he constantly let her down and spoke to Ellie. Greg was another character that did annoy me at times but I don't think he deserved the attitude he got from Ellie. I think his heart was in the right place but he went around things the completely wrong place! Milo and Jackson were absolute darlings and Reeni was the best friend that everybody needs. However, I have got to admit that my absolute favourite just had to be Jackson's adorable dog Tippi! I am a MASSIVE animal lover and even run my own rescue which is called Golden Oldies Cat Rescue And Hospice (you can find me on social media if you wish). therefore, any animals in books are a HUGE bonus for me and Tippi is just the absolute sweetest! All of the characters are unique with their own personalities, weaknesses, flaws and strengths and I loved meeting and getting to know them all. The only downfall with the characters is that they are entirely fictional even though Billie brings them to life unfortunately, no matter how much I would love to, I am unable to meet up with them in the real world!! I was completely invested in them all throughout and I was gutted when the time came to say Goodbye! Billie truly does an absolutely amazing job of bringing the story to life and the characters leap out of the pages as your turning them thanks to her evocative writing skills and I enjoyed getting to meet them all!! It really goes to show how talented she is creating such a wonderful storyline and all these brilliant characters in her debut book!
I wanted to end by thanking Billie for writing this beautiful story but not only that but for also including your own journey for your readers at the end. I could not imagine going through what you did and yet to come out of it at the end and keep going strong and then writing THIS STUNNER!! You should be extremely proud of yourself and I really cannot wait to meet these incredible characters again. Thank You!
Clear your schedules as this is one gorgeous, unique, emotive and unputdownable stunner ❤️
Overall an absolutely INCREDIBLE, STUNNING, UNIQUE, EMOTIVE, MUST READ ESCAPISM!!!
Well, first and foremost, this was a beautiful debut.
It immediately caught my attention - second chance, long lost love, small town romance, all set in the UK… need I say more?
It centres around Ellie and Jackson and spans a 17-year timeline, which is nicely woven into the story. Flashbacks fill in the gaps from their whirlwind school romance, marked by emotional trauma, which led to almost two decades without speaking or seeing one another. Ellie has been trying (and somewhat failing) to move forward, while still carrying the past like a tonne of bricks, but luck doesn’t seem to be on her side. When Jackson returns to Dorset to care for his terminally ill mother, unfinished business and old feelings begin to resurface.
With the use of flashbacks and an easy to follow storyline, you find yourself fully absorbed in the narrative. Billie’s descriptive language allows you to immerse yourself in the English coastline, as if you’re right there with them. The blend of past and present timelines really helps you connect with the characters and brings a much-needed sense of realism to the story.
The relationships are wonderfully diverse, spanning the full emotional spectrum - from the unwavering love between Ellie and her best friend of over 20 years, Reeni, to the tumultuous and, quite frankly, toxic relationship she has with her parents, especially her father. Jackson is such a likeable, lovable, puppy-dog MMC - the UK equivalent of the boy next door. He comes across as genuinely caring and emotionally mature, and you can’t help but root for him and become his biggest cheerleader throughout. Ellie’s attitude did grate on me at times. While part of me felt deeply sympathetic and wanted to give her younger self the biggest mama-bear hug, another part of me just wanted to give her a good shake. Her stubbornness occasionally took over - while you often understand why, at times it felt a little unnecessary. It would have been nice to see a bit more visible character growth on the page. We were asked in the group chat for this readalong, what advice we would give Ellie if we could call her up - and my answer is simple: accept the help. See the support from those around you and take it with everything you’ve got. Let them be there. Let them listen. You are not alone, and none of this is your fault. And most importantly, recognise how vital communication is.
The found-family element really shines through, especially in Ellie’s relationship with Sophie. While many small town romances I’ve read are set in the US - where that setting feels more familiar - it still works beautifully here and highlights the impact of a close-knit UK community.
Please note that this book does cover some heavy topics, but Billie handles them with real heart and compassion. While romance sits at the centre of the story, the true message is this: no matter what life throws your way, you are never alone. You just have to recognise that there are people around you - always. You are capable of love, and you are deserving of it, just like everyone else. (Also… mother is always one step ahead—and quite frankly, mother knows best.)
Thank you to Billie Swann and InstaBookTours for gifting me a copy & having me on the readalong/tour.
Thank you to Milburn Ink and NetGalley for the early read in exchange for my honest review.
Ellie has spent the last seventeen years just getting by after one summer changed everything. She now runs a beachside cafe and avoids anything that might bring up the past, especially love and the future she once imagined. But when Jackson comes back into her life, no longer the boy she remembers but someone who still looks at her the same way, everything she’s tried to move on from starts to come back. As their connection builds again, so does the secret Ellie has been carrying since they were teenagers, forcing her to decide if she’s ready to face it and take a chance on the life she walked away from.
Rating: 4 ⭐ WOW. My heart and mind went through SO many emotions while reading this. The book puts romance at the center but doesn’t shy away from real-life issues, like family challenges and emotional struggles. It’s a second-chance story that explores teenage heartbreak, longing, and unresolved feelings, moving between the past and present in a way that really helps you understand both Ellie and Jackson. I also loved the sense of community in the story, where everyone knows each other, and there is a lot of support as people navigate what is going on in their lives. My only critique is that Ellie was a bit frustrating at times, which is hard to overlook since she is the MC. Some of her choices felt selfish or overly dramatic (which I could understand in some cases, but can’t expand on without spoiling), BUT Jackson’s mom, Sophie, made up for this, I ADORED HER!!! The story is on the heavier side, so be warned, but Swann tells it in a way that feels natural and keeps you invested the whole time. I see that this is book 1 in the series?? So maybe there is a sequel? Read this!
Quotes I loved: "People can't help you if they don't know what's going on. You have to let the people you trust in. And you have to tell the people you trust the truth." and "Regrets are the ultimate waste of time."
What a fabulously heartwarming book this is! The Summer That Changed Us isn't a hearts and flowers love story; it's a romance that deals with some serious issues with grit, sensitivity and warmth. This is Billie Swann's debut novel and I'm delighted to see that she has more books planned in the Changing Tides series.
Seventeen years ago, Ellie and Jackson were childhood sweethearts but they are driven apart by a shattering event that shaped their lives. Ellie shies away from relationships and concentrates on running her beach café but when trade starts to fall off she discovers that there's a rival café close by and running it is none other than Jackson.
Oh it's really painful to see Ellie and Jackson skirting around each other as if they are strangers. The chemistry is clearly still there but they have been hurt terribly before and it looks like neither of them are willing to take the risk of having their heart broken again. It's like they are both wearing magnets though and as much as they pull away from each other, they are drawn back together.
The history behind Ellie and Jackson is so sad and I struggled to hold in my tears as events played out during their teenage years. It's a shame they were so young as they might have reacted differently and got through it together rather than alienating each other and working through their pain separately. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though and you can't turn back the clock.
Whilst this is a romance novel, there's a lot of angst and difficulties for the characters to overcome. It makes it quite realistic as life is all about the ups and downs and I really warmed to both main characters and others in the periphery.
Compelling, heartwarming, poignant and uplifting, The Summer That Changed Us is an accomplished and flawless debut novel from Billie Swann and I'm excited to read more in the series. A very highly recommended read.
An addictive dual time line, a story to break and then mend and melt your heart and those gorgeous chapter headings! Add this to your list of must reads!
17 years ago, at just 15 years old, Ellie and Jackson were everything to eachother, until the universe stepped in to turn their worlds upside down. 17 years later, childhood friend Reeni is still encouraging Ellie to face up to her past and confront what holds her back. But how can you do that when your memory of events is not the same as everybody else's and nobody even knows how you think the past happened?
Meet Ellie, running The Beach House cafe in Dorset, living her life with childhood friend Reeni close by, but somehow, life has never quite felt complete. As things start to unravel while Ellie isn't as sure of her future as she may have once been, the past reappears and throws her life into turmoil.
I was gripped from the start, reading this beautifully crafted story, with chapters alternating between the emotionally charged past and the equally emotive present day.
I felt there were some beautiful characters who you warmed to immediately and some who you would rather kept walking along the beach! At first, I found Ellie a little hard to warm to but as her story unfolded, that quickly changed and I took her into my heart.
This book tackles some hard situations, explores friendships, relationships and family bonds in the most delicate way. There are times your emotions will go through all the bumps in the road, but then it also has the power to soothe you.
One thing's for sure, this is a story that will capture your heart and along the way, it will bring you to tears, fill you with rage and also cause smiles of joy.
I do love a book that stays with you long after the last page (and one you can talk about to whoever will listen!)
An easy 5 stars from me!
Out 31st March, make sure to get a copy, you won't be disappointed!
Read as an e-ARC, with huge thanks to the author and NetGalley.
Thank you to Net Galley, The publisher and Billie Swann for the advanced Copy of the book
Coming March 31st!
For 17 years Ellie has been moving on with her life trying to forget the past and trying to learn to live without Jackson her childhood boyfriend, when he returns from Australia to their hometown, a small town on the Dorset coast to look after his mum who has taken ill, old feelings resurface.
First of all I loved that this was set in the UK, because of this I felt like I could relate more to the characters as I’m from the uk myself so there was many familiar themes throughout. I absolutely loved the characters and the complexity of them all which together created a really compelling story, Billie Swann touched on many hard, emotional topics but did so in such a great way! I really enjoyed the dual timeline where for every few chapters in the present timeline there was a chapter that took place 17 years ago, which I felt really helped me as a reader to connect with Ellie and Jackson’s characters and created a lot more depth to their relationship.
I loved the Friendship between Ellie and Reeni and the way they are always there for one another but I especially loved the relationship that Ellie had with Sophie, Jackson’s mum, the way Sophie treated Ellie was as though she was her own daughter and their bond was really special
Overall I really enjoyed this book, there was such an emotional pull between Jackson and Ellie and the story was so heartbreakingly beautiful!!
This book surprised me. The most surprising thing being, that it was Jackson’s mum and her struggle with cancer that really moved me. The love she felt for boys and Ellie was so touching. We get some flashbacks throughout the book of Ellie and Jackson at aged 15 and pregnant, however it’s Ellie’s mum that we see the most of there and she is in sharp contrast to Jackson’s. Ellie’s mum is controlled by her dad and is more worried about his reaction, and other people's than Ellie, Jackson and the baby. Then tragedy happens, of which we get to see it unfold 17 years later in flashbacks.
I know this was meant to be a love story about Ellie and Jackson, and it is, I enjoyed watching them reconnect and talk about the past and move forward, each still loving each other, but for me it highlighted how much their parents; mainly Ellie’s swept the whole thing under the rug and pretended it didn’t happen, they were only 15 and should of been supported more and then maybe they wouldn’t of still be hurting 17 years later with it all still unresolved. Jackson’s mum helps heal the rift, she shows Ellie true motherly love, albeit a bit late and gets them to finally talk about it.
There was a lot of emotions in this book, some very big and they were dealt with well, there is no one set way to deal with any situation and the author has given an interpretation that as a reader you can certainly identify with and feel all the emotions from the main characters. It’s a book that grows and even after reading you discover more as the plot sits with you.
Firstly, thank you to Netgalley and Milburn Ink for the ARC in exchange for my thoughts. The story truly lived up to its title - it was both heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. It felt more about each character's personal journey through life after loss than about finding their way back to each other. I guess that's why the HEA came very slowly and at the very end.
Billie Swann has done an amazing job setting up the place. All the beachy descriptions and feels practically echoed throughout each character and their life choices, providing such a deeper level to the story.
It's not exactly your typical romance novel that's focused on two people who fall in love. Despite the summery cover, I wouldn't recommend this as a beach read exactly. It deals with heavier subjects and how that changes a person from the inside out.
It's an exploration of love in various forms. And it gives you real hope to heal when you need it.
4.5⭐️ I loved this book so much, I think it's going to stick with me for a while, it follows Ellie & Jackson in the past & present, what Ellie went through all them years ago is so upsetting, and also Jackson, holding on to all that guilt even though it wasn't their fault must be absolutely heartbreaking, although we didn't read much of what Jackson was going through as it was just through Ellie POV.
Ellie frustrated me a little bit to start as I wanted to just shake her and say communicate, accept the help that is being offered to you.
The friendship between Ellie & Reeni was so lovely and I'm so glad she had a best friend like that throughout her childhood/adult life. Jacksons mum was an absolute sweetheart and I just love her so much. The ending broke me, I had to hold back the tears.
I would have liked to see a little bit of how it turned out with Ellie's mum & dad towards the end, but maybe we will get that in book 2!
Please check the TW before reading this, as it talks quite a bit about child loss
This book was so good!! I absolutely loved every single character, Sophie just melted my heart🥹 This book showed how people cope with fallouts and difficult decisions in life, and how to overcome them. After reading this i’ve realised that second chance love might just be my favourite romance trope!
The way Billie Swann wrote this made me feel so connected to the characters… the trauma from certain characters didn’t outshine one another in the book and I imagine that’s very difficult to be able to juggle as a writer, especially with how deep the issues were.
I flew through the last 60% of the book in a day, itching to find out more about Ellie and Jackson!! I loved how close the friendships were and how everyone had each others backs.
I liked that there wasn’t too much spice in this, the storyline just kept flowing and kept me hooked.
I was tearing up in the end at the epilogue, it was beautiful🥹 And now I cannot wait for the second book to come out
thank you to NetGalley, the publishers & author for allowing me to read this book before its release date.
‼️ TRIGGER WARNINGS: ‼️ 🔻Teenage pregnancy 🔻Pregnancy loss (during scan) 🔻Diagnosis of Cancer 🔻Death of parent
This heartfelt book shows the lives of teenage sweethearts who not only find out they are pregnant but then go through the pain of losing the baby.
Fast forward to 17 years later, after parting ways, Ellie & Jackson are brought back into each others lives, having had nearly two decades of unsaid hurt, pain and loss.
I really struggled to like Ellie, she was stubborn, hot headed and at times rude. Was there actual history between Ellie and Milo? How could they still feel exactly the same about each other after such a long time apart?
I would read more of this authors work, and I do feel a lot of things were dealt with in this book others could possibly shy away from? I did read this within two days … I just needed to know what happened next!!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and author for an advanced copy of The Summer That Changed Us by Billie Swann. This was a sweet story of second chances. It did have some heavy subject matters so you may want to check trigger warnings before reading. I found the FMC, Ellie, hard to like at times. It’s understandable as a teen to make poor decisions but as adult her choices were frustrating and often selfish. She also had a brash way with people that put me off. The MMC, Jackson, was much more likable. I liked the dual timelines, although I found the past part a little vague. Because of that I would have liked to have read Jackson’s point of view. I was happy with the ending. And will definitely read more books by this author. 4⭐️
The Summer That Changed Us by Billie Swann is a heartfelt and emotional story about love, regret, and the possibility of second chances. It is an emotional and thoughtful debut that will appeal to readers who enjoy second-chance romances and character-driven stories.
Billie also uses shifting timelines effectively, revealing pieces of the past while moving the present-day story forward and this kept me hooked throughout the book. With its themes of healing, forgiveness, and enduring love, it is a moving reminder that sometimes the past can lead us back to the people we were always meant to find again.
This was a heartwarming uplifting story about dealing with past mistakes and trauma, as well as self-discovery. While the pacing felt a bit slow and the narrative style was a little melodramatic, the story and the character development was realistic. Although there was a romance subplot, FMC's character growth was central to the story. Even if I found her to be a bit unlikable at first, she did end up having a somewhat satisfying growth arc.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Thank you Billie Swann, Milburn Ink, and NetGalley for this ARC!
I really enjoyed reading this book! I loved the flashback scenes, and Jackson's love for Ellie. You could really tell how much he loved her, i felt every emotion. And thats really good writing!
The heartbreak of their past, really hit me. Especially when they talked about it in the present. When they first shared what they felt about everything back then. Also, the vulnerability of the MMC was amazing. I know reading about a man who's not scared of showing his emotions, and not scared of crying.
Also, i loved Sophie as a character! amazing woman.
A second chance love story of a completely different kind. Ellie and Jackson are young when they get together, and life takes them in a difficult direction. This was a really powerful story and I highly recommend it. There are some difficult topics that should be noted before reading, but wow, handled brilliantly. I received and advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley, and this is my honest review.
The Summer That Changed Us is such an emotional rollercoaster, with two different timelines that are both as captivating as each other.
The small-town feel was right up my street and the character interactions, especially in the present day, had my heart swelling.
I felt so much frustration and heartbreak for the characters, to the point where I would think about a chapter for hours later. I could really feel their emotions through the page and I felt truly spellbound.
The Summer That Changed Us has such a beautifully written romance that laces its way through the entire book. I would happily read more of their story in the future.
Thank you so much Insta Book Tours and Billie Swann for having me on this book tour. I look forward to having a physical copy in my hands🥰
(Please make sure you check trigger warnings before reading💖✨)
Enjoyable but heart squeezing debut book from an author definitely to keep an eye out for as she grows more in to her writing ability. This book brushed some hard topics and was a book of second chances. It was rich and fulfilling and well written and given the tease at the end for the next book was a great idea. This will make a fabulous duology but I wouldn't make it longer than that as it will ruin what was done in this first book. Definitely recommend the read
I read this as an ARC and thoroughly enjoyed this book! I rated it 4 stars because the FMC was frustrating to root for and can be irritating at times but the story was really great! I was captivated by the story right away and finished it in about a day and a half. This book comes out officially in March and is well worth the read!
I absolutely loved Jackson and Ellie—their connection felt so real and had me rooting for them from start to finish. The story was incredibly emotional and made me feel so much while reading. It’s one of those books that completely pulls you in and stays with you for a long time. Thank you to Billie and net galley for giving me the opportunity to fall in love with Jackson and Ellie.
Thanks to the author for an ARC copy this is my personal thoughts. A beautifully written story of love, loss & hope written in a beautifully compassionate way. Without any spoilers this book covers a wide range of story lines. Highly recommend this book
There's something about romances with the word "summer" in the title that always instantly gets me requesting the book.
Billie Swann's debut was an emotional read that had our two main characters crossing paths again, when Jackson arrives back home to care for his ailing mother. Seeing him again brings up the past for Ellie and what the two endured when they were teenagers. Told through dual POVs, we are treated to the then and now and follow along with the journey as we see what happened to break the two apart. And as all second chance romances go, there is a lovely happy ending.
If you like romances that tear at your heartstrings, this one must be on your list. I look forward to seeing what the author writes next.
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for allowing me to read The Summer That Changed Us in exchange for an honest review 🌟
TSTCU is a heartfelt story of Ellie and Jackson, who fall pregnant as teenagers and miscarry, leading to nearly 2 decades worth of un-talked about trauma.
Whilst the story line was easily followed and the setting of the book, on the English coast line was absolutely gorgeous, I finished the book with two quite big issues that I struggled to move past.
First of all Ellie; I found myself really struggling to like her as a character. She was so stubborn and hot headed, and I found some of her behaviour was left unaccounted for and she was forgiven quite easily for doing things that actually, were irresponsible or rash. I feel there could have been a bit more growth for her as a character.
Secondly, the plot focuses on the pregnancy from the teenage years and then another running plot point is the terminal illness of Jacksons Mother. I do think one of these should have had more of a senior lead in the story to allow for the trauma and emotions that come with it to be fully explored. It felt as though there was more to be said, found and discussed with both of these traumatic situations but as they are both quite deep, it was surface level.
The HEA (which I am always happy about!) also could have been less, insta love I suppose. 17 years have passed and both MCs would have been completely different people yet both appeared to be in love instantly again; more yearning and longing and small moments for them to realise they were the same people as 17 years ago woild have brought that to life a little bit more.
Also, I am confused about Milo's character as was he in love with Ellie?? I am not sure!
Overall, whilst my review does lean heavily to the negatives, I do feel as though there were some really beautiful moments within the book, there is a found family aspect and it covers some hearty topics which many authors would shy away from. It handles those topics with the care they deserve and despite my frustration with some of the aspects of the book, it is a beautifully written book. Fast paced and easy to follow.
It is a 3* for me and I would be interested in reading other books by this author.

This was such a beautiful and Uplifting read. For a debut novel, the author's writing is brilliant and the pacing was just right. The author's writing is so good that sometimes I forgot that I was reading and I got swept along with the characters in the story. I loved Ellie and Jackson's characters and I wanted them to have their happy ending. Overall a brilliant novel that I highly recommend to other readers. I look forward to reading more by the author. 💖 Thank you to Instabook tours and the author Billie Swann for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Highlights from the book: •Dual Timeline •Sensitive Topics •Heartwarming story
ℝ𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Summer that changed us literally chewed me up and spat me back out - what an emotional rollercoaster.
I think the dual timeline worked so well for this story as you could really understand the situation from teenage and adult Ellie’s perspectives and the guilt and heartbreak that followed Ellie and Jackson through their lives.
Although this is very sad in multiple places, the story overall is heartwarming - you just might have to look at things a little differently.
My favourite quote: “I have loved you for every yesterday. I love you here and now today. And I’ll love you for all our tomorrows.”
