This inspiring tribute to beloved, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Mary Oliver, invites readers of all ages to wander, wonder, and awaken the wild inside them. Perfect for fans of Patrick McDonnell’s Me...Jane and anyone who loves language and nature.
Mary Oliver felt most at home outside. As a child, she loved to wander the woods, build tiny grass-and-stick houses, and climb in, feeling part of all the beauty around her.
When she began to write, she wanted to illuminate the wonder of the world. Could her poems inspire others to discover a wildness inside themselves, a wildness all their own?
Pause the busyness and overstimulation of daily life and immerse in beauty and quiet with this gentle, soul-stirring story. Anyone familiar with Mary Oliver will love this vital portrait that lovingly evokes her essence. Children encountering her for the first time will meet a friend. Nature lovers will find a kindred spirit. Those interested in mindfulness will appreciate the whispered call to presence and aliveness. The perfect gift to nurture the wild inside all of us.
Barbara Kerley was born in Washington, D.C. and has lived in many places, including Nepal and the tropical island of Guam. She has written about almost everything: 19th C iguanodons, Teddy Roosevelt, world peace, Mark Twain's donkey, and the pleasure of following your curiosity.
Oh my god, this is so gorgeous. Wow. And (of course, if you know Mary Oliver) it’s gay! And in such a lovely way!! I do think it’s def for older kids, mostly because I think it will lose a lot of kids when it gets into what metaphor & simile mean. But! I do think it’ll also get some kids interested in poetry. This would be a fantastic poetry month read-aloud, especially with older elementary or even middle school kids (it’s always amazing to have an excuse to read aloud/ use a picture book with older kids!!)
Thank you so much to Scholastic for the ARC! It’s out in March 2027.
