He doesn’t just break rules. He breaks the men who cross them.
War hero Jake Callahan didn’t come back to Iron Ridge for peace. He came back for Emma Hayes.
He’s waited. Watched. Wanted. Always staying just far enough away to keep her safe.
Until Emma is threatened.
Jake isn’t the kind of man who lets things go. He’s the kind who handles them—quietly. Permanently. Because Emma was never just someone he wanted. She has always been his.
And anyone who touches her? He’ll burn the world down to make sure they regret it.
SAVAGE RANCHER is a dark cowboy romance featuring a morally gray hero, forced proximity, and a love story forged in danger.
I'm so disappointed. 😭 I flew through this because the chapters were insanely short. Like there’s over 100 chapters, but some of them are literally only a few sentences long?? Or less??? It made the pacing super fast, but it also made the whole book feel really choppy. Scenes would abruptly end, switch POVs, and then continue the exact same moment again from the other character’s perspective.
Jake is definitely very possessive and obsessive right from the start, so if that’s your thing, this book absolutely delivers on that. But I never fully bought into the relationship emotionally. They hadn’t seen each other in 18 years, and then suddenly everything was immediately intense with basically no buildup at all. I needed more history and emotional connection before jumping straight into the physical side of things because most of the book honestly felt like sex first, plot second 😭
And some of the relationship choices just felt so unrealistic to me. The no-protection situation and Emma being completely okay with potentially having his baby that quickly... when they had barely reconnected at all (literally she saw him twice then BOOM) just made me sit there like ??? I know dark romance can be over the top but I still need a LITTLE emotional grounding to believe in it 🤣🤣
Even though this is technically a dark romance, it weirdly felt more like a palate cleanser to me because it was such an easy, fast read. I couldn’t fully take parts of it seriously, especially with how quickly everything escalated. The danger/suspense subplot was there, but it mostly stayed in the background while the spice carried the story.
I was actually thinking about signing up for the next book in the series while I was reading this, but by the end I was really glad I didn’t 😭 I just don’t think this writing style or setup worked for me personally.

unhinged you say??? touch her and die energy you say??? hmm say less 🙂↕️
Dakota James developed SAVAGE RANCHER into a raging thrill of obsession, danger, and immense emotional wreckage drenched in Wyoming dust and flannel! Jake Callahan surges through these pages like a storm cell, filled with professional precision, buried violence, and the mysterious calm of a man ready to destroy anyone who threatens the woman he loves!!! The entire atmosphere is perfectly planned to keep your heart fluttering, alongside each scene tightening like barbed wire around Emma and Jake as their old love develops to one that is darker and far more addictive, eighteen years apart should have calmed them down, yet once Jake returns to Iron Ridge, the tension erupts astonishingly and you can expect EVERYTHING to happen! . The prose dwells every neuron cell of your brain into the setting that the Author elaborates, I swam around the background of the moments and heard every secret while my body was shivering with such tremendous emotions! Dakota James knows just how to implement strength, limits, and obsession instead of twisting Jake into something less threatening, he remains morally enigmatic from the beginning to the end, Jake is completely savage in the most entertaining way that can be described, he is a loaded weapon operating as a rancher, roaming through Iron Ridge with the icy focus of a war-trained predator who knows that Emma belongs with him forever! . Dakota James keeps Jake firmly anchored in anguish, loyalty, pain, and the indelible wounds of exile and conflict, each and every protective moment is critical in that Jake feels a natural, the man notices, anticipates, and responds and after violence takes place, it comes with terrible certitude, there were occasions when I laughed out of utter surprise at how insane he grew over Emma, because his definition of affection is literally "touch her and your bloodline evaporates." Despite the intimidation, there is a harsh commitment that blends into romance while maintaining its sharp edges, the novel's infectious feeling develops from its fine line of suspense and tenderness!!! . Emma Hayes certainly deserves a lot of credit for never sinking into the background in the face of Jake's tremendous dominance, she pushes back, questions everything, looks into her father's strange death, and steps right into trouble with the courage to match Jake step for step, their chemistry literally rockets off the page with an almost atmospheric intensity, like turbulence developing before impact, and the forced proximity scenes are quite spectacular! Each bit of kiss signifies eighteen years of unanswered need, wrath, history, and hunger. Dakota James writes suspense using considerable attention to detail, building up situations until the point where they groan yet retain their vitality. Emma and Jake together feel like two hurricanes getting back together after nearly two decades apart! . I started out out thinking I was going to read a few chapters and ended up long in the night consuming caffeine while Jake mentally prepared to eliminate another enemy from existence. Iron Ridge is perhaps gritty, scary, and dark in the most excellent direction, with buried secrets, faithful friendships, betrayal, and violence seething beneath small town traditions! The intrigue surrounding Emma's paternity kept the story sharp, but the romance remained hot enough to rip paint right off the walls, Dakota James has written a dark cowboy romance that is compulsive and every chapter will only put you on the edge of your seat, I've never read such romantic suspense that really grips your brain, heart and soul all at once! SAVAGE RANCHER reads like Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch dragged through gasoline fumes and emotional warfare, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment!!!
This book really appealed to me. A dark cowboy romance with a possessive dominant male character. I enjoyed the storyline with Jake and Emma being reunited after Emma’s Dad chasing Jake away 18 years previously. Jake lived up to being possessive when Emma and her home are threatened. I enjoyed the suspense in the storyline and I liked the interaction between Jake and his friends and looking to see how this develops in the future books.
I enjoy spice in my books however I felt the relationship between Jake and Emma was only based on that and was missing that deeper connection and how their relationship had changed from when they were children. Each chapter was also very short, some only a line or two which also detracted from my enjoyment of the story.
This was my first time reading this author and I was definitely interested enough to continue the series to see what happens next.
Thank you @greyspromo for providing the ARC. 4 ⭐️ 3 🌶️
Imagine a cowboy romance with a side of mercenaries, like 3 hot mercenaries and second chance romance. 🤌🏼 Jake left town at 18 to join the military, leaving his sweetheart Emma behind. Now, 18 years later, he’s back, and he wastes no time proving she’s still the woman on his mind.
Their reunion happens fast, and honestly they do not take it slow. One tiny spark turns into a fire almost instantly. But then again, committing a crime together is definitely one way to bond.
The short chapters made this book ridiculously bingeable, and the chemistry kept me hooked the entire time. If you’re looking for a fun, steamy, and addictive read, this one is absolutely worth picking up!
I’ve always had a soft spot for dark cowboy romances, so when I applied for this ARC, I had high expectations, and I was definitely not disappointed. This story goes all in with its darker tone and grittier themes, setting it apart from other cowboy romances I’ve read. The exploration of morally grey choices, high-stakes danger, and the shadows lurking behind the ranch lifestyle added a compelling edge. It’s that unflinching dive into the darkness, both in the characters’ pasts and the situations they face, that made this book so gripping for me. Instead of shying away from tough subjects, it leans into them, delivering a read that’s intense, addictive, and powerfully atmospheric.
At the heart of this story is a poignant second-chance romance between Jake and Emma. They were each other’s first loves, utterly convinced that nothing could ever tear them apart. But their dreams are shattered when Jake is run out of town by Emma’s controlling father with the sheriff’s help, simply because he’s from the wrong side of the tracks. Their forced separation is heartbreaking, a painful reminder of the power that prejudice and parental control can wield over young love.
Fast forward 18 years, and Jake is back in town, more determined than ever to win Emma back. The years apart have turned him into a formidable man, his time in the military and special forces honing his skills, discipline, and sense of purpose. He’s always been protective by nature, but now, with the support of his two best friends (who are also seasoned professionals), Jake and his team possess the expertise to assess and neutralise any threat. Their bond, forged through shared danger and experience, makes them a force to be reckoned with, and this time, Jake won’t let anything stand in the way of reclaiming the love he lost.
Emma has returned to her family’s ranch after the sudden death of her father, newly divorced from a man who never truly loved her. Now, she’s determined to focus on herself and her passion for wildlife photography. But being back home stirs up a flood of old feelings and memories, especially as she’s now a single woman living alone, her independence threatened by predatory vultures circling and pressuring her into selling the land. When Emma arranges to meet with Eli, a man who believes intimidation will force her hand, he never shows up. Instead, Emma is confronted by Jake, the man who shattered her heart all those years ago. Then, in a shocking turn, Eli is found dead on the ground, plunging Emma into even deeper turmoil.
What should terrify Emma only makes her more grateful to have Jake as a protector as fierce as he is devoted by her side. Sparks fly as they navigate their rekindled feelings, but Emma is no longer the naive 18-year-old girl she once was. She’s stronger now, determined to stand her ground, and unwilling to let anyone control her, not even Jake. As the mystery of her father’s death casts a shadow over the ranch, darkness seems to linger in every corner. The tension escalates when Eli’s brother, Cole, arrives to uncover the truth about what happened. Unlike Eli, who relied on intimidation, Cole is far more calculating and patient, happy to play the long game to get what he wants. He’s cunning and ruthless, willing to exploit Jake’s love and protectiveness for Emma as leverage. The stakes have never been higher, and Emma finds herself caught between past heartbreak, present danger, and the fight for her future.
This book will leave you with burning questions and an insatiable desire to learn more, setting the stage for the next instalment. While it’s undeniably frustrating not to get all the answers, the author’s restraint is clever and keeps you hooked. The atmosphere is dark and morally complex, pushing you to question your own boundaries and sympathies. The spice is electric, the kind that crackles off the page with morally grey men whose touch is both dangerous and irresistible, their fates tangled with violence and desire. Add in the tension of forced proximity, and you have a story that’s provocative, addictive, and impossible to put down.
Thank you to Dakota James and Grey Promotions for this ARC.
The Iron Ridge series was written by Dakota James. Savage Rancher is the first book in the series. Thank you to Grey's Promotions and the author for the ability to read this ARC. This being the series starter, I am not sure how interconnected the series will end up. However, given the way the book ended leads me to believe that you should read this series in order. Oh my goodness this book is a wild ride! It was a little slow in the beginning, giving us all the slow burn and tension that we were promised. Dakota James delivered on everything discussed in the author’s note. This book is one of the best dark cowboy books that I have read recently. I am a goner for a found family, fierce loyalty, and protective instincts.
Jake Callahan is the type of man your mama tells you to avoid, but that makes him even hotter! He is rugged, possessive, protective, unhinged most of the time, and takes the term MINE to a whole new level. Emma is thrown back into life in her hometown after a tragedy. After eighteen years, Jake can finally get back what he has always wanted, her. From the start it was an insta-love rekindling. These two just jump back into a relationship as if no time has passed. They had to find a balance between keeping her safe and treating her like a possession. I love a woman that holds her head high and gives the sass back to her man. As the story continued it was clear that Emma was not used to the dark side of the world and was a little out of her depth. Jake was always there to protect or save her from tough situations. Regardless, Emma knows what she wants and she wants Jake. The connection that they share after all these years feels irrevocable. Almost tangible like you can taste the sizzle in the air.
The banter between all the characters in this little found family is superior. The men are friends that turn into brothers. When Jake brought Emma home they all just folded her into their lives with no hesitation. It just felt natural. Emma was right where she wanted to be and where she belonged. There was a night in the bar that made me feel a shift and something just clicked into place. The storyline finds them in some pretty dangerous scenarios. Jake and Emma run towards the danger instead of away from it.
Iron Ridge is a town full of secrets, lies, and mysterious circumstances. The last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat until the last page. It seemed to all happen so fast. We were finally given some answers proving everything is not as it seems. It had me staying up late and postponing my adulting. The end of the story makes it clear that this war is not over in Iron Ridge. Dakota James is a new author for me and is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. I think I am going to love the rest of the Iron Ridge series. If Luke and Mason's stories are anything close to Savage Rancher, then we are in for a dark, dangerous, and wild ride!
Dakota James really said “what if a cowboy was also a human warning label?” and I ate this book UP. Jake and Emma absolutely owned me from page one. I devoured Savage Rancher in one sitting like a woman possessed, eyes burning at 2am, telling myself “just one more chapter” while Jake Callahan was out here casually deciding who lives and who disappears into the Wyoming dirt. 🌪️🤠
Jake is the kind of morally gray hero that has you questioning your own ethics because why was I giggling every time this man got terrifyingly protective?? He doesn’t do grand speeches or soft declarations. He just silently stalks around making sure Emma is safe and ready to burn entire bloodlines if someone breathes wrong near her. Romantic. Completely unhinged, but romantic. The man is basically a loaded weapon wrapped in flannel.
And EMMA. Thank GOD she wasn’t written like some helpless damsel. She had backbone, chemistry with Jake that practically sparked off the pages, and every scene between them felt tight with tension. The forced proximity in this book?? Absolutely lethal. Every look, every touch, every “stay behind me” moment had me internally screaming into a pillow.
The atmosphere was gritty and dangerous in the best way. Small town ranch vibes mixed with looming violence and obsession? It felt like Yellowstone wandered into a dark romance fever dream and I mean that as the highest compliment possible. Dakota James knew EXACTLY what she was doing with Jake. This man walked into the story carrying trauma, possessiveness, and enough emotional repression to start a forest fire.
Also the pacing?? Not a single wasted moment. I kept thinking I’d take a break and suddenly I was 70% through the book clutching my iced coffee like it could emotionally prepare me for whatever feral thing Jake was about to do next.
If you love dark cowboy romances with possessive men, danger around every corner, forced proximity, and a hero who would absolutely commit crimes while maintaining intense eye contact, Savage Rancher delivers the whole chaotic rodeo. Five stars and probably a therapy bill.
📖 Savage Rancher by Dakota James 📅 Release Date: May 21, 2026
Thank you to Dakota James and Grey Promo for the ARC!
If you love dark cowboy romances with a possessive retired military MMC, small-town drama, and a man who would absolutely burn the world down for his woman… this one delivers 👏🤠
Jake and Emma were high school sweethearts before life — and Emma’s father — tore them apart. After being pushed out of town, Jake joined the Marines and spent years away, but he never truly let Emma go. Eighteen years later, he returns to Iron Ridge after learning Emma is divorced and back home after her father’s death. And from the moment he comes back? The chemistry is immediate. There’s no dancing around feelings here these two know exactly what they want.
Jake was honestly giving protective, obsessed, touch-her-and-you’re-dead energy the entire book and I ate it up 😮💨 Between the retired military background, ranch life, dangerous enemies, and the constant tension surrounding the ranch, this felt like the perfect mix of dark cowboy romance and action-driven suspense.
The plot kept me hooked, especially with the danger surrounding Emma and the ranch. There’s revenge, corruption, family drama, and some darker elements tied into the town that definitely raise the stakes. The spice was also SPICY 🌶️ and fit Jake’s intense personality perfectly.
I also really liked that while this book wraps up Jake and Emma’s main story, you can already see more drama building for the next book, and now I’m invested 👀
Overall, this was a fun, fast paced small-town cowboy romance with protective alpha energy, strong chemistry, and enough suspense to keep the pages turning. Definitely recommend if dark cowboy romances are your thing!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🤠 Tropes & Vibes: • Small town romance • Dark cowboy romance • High school sweethearts • Second chance romance • Retired military MMC • Touch her and die • Protective/possessive MMC • Ranch setting • Action & suspense • Fast-burn chemistry 🌶️
Dakota James absolutely delivered with Savage Rancher — and as someone who already loves romantic suspense, this one really worked for me. I actually loved that the suspense side leaned into a military background instead of the typical mafia setup. It gave the story a different kind of intensity that felt justified (lol - vigilante schmurder is ok with me in my romance novels, I guess?) while still keeping all the delicious tension and 'please hold me close' danger.
And the cowboy vibes?! SO good. The ranch setting added such a fun, rugged energy to the romance - especially because we already know we're going to get two more books based on Jake's friends! (I want Mason's story first!!!) There’s just something about a protective cowboy with a dangerous edge that hits every. single. time.
This is definitely an adult romance. The spice starts EARLY and does not hold back. I’d easily call this a 🌶️🌶️🌶️ level read. If you like your romantic suspense fast-paced, sexy, and packed with cowboy energy, Savage Rancher is absolutely worth picking up. I’ll definitely be reading more from Dakota James and continuing the Iron Ridge series!
HOUSEKEEPING: * Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 * Reader Age Suggestions: adult * Content Warnings: some mentions of SA * Kindle Unlimited: ✅❌ - unknown * Part of A Series: ✅ / Can it be read alone?: Not sure yet!

Cowboy, slow down. You can’t ‘You’re mine’ me as of Chapter 3
3.25 ⭐️ | 2.5 🌶️
SAVAGE RANCHER was my first Dakota James read and listen… I get the appeal. Morally gray cowboy? Hyper-protective war hero? Forced proximity? A man willing to burn the world down for her? Oh, Dakota James absolutely knew what she was doing here.
Jake Callahan is intense from page one. The kind of man who doesn’t walk into a room; he claims it. And Emma? The second he sees her again after 18 years apart, this man is basically like: “Yep. Still obsessed. Still in love. Still yours.” Sir 😭💀.
And while that level of devotion is undeniably hot in theory, the pacing personally didn’t work for me. Everything happens at lightning speed. There’s barely a moment to breathe before it’s all possessive declarations, dangerous tension, and “you’re mine and I’ll never let you go” energy. I needed more build-up, more emotional depth, more earned connection between them after nearly two decades apart.
The writing itself was solid and easy to binge, but the story felt less like a slow-burning western ride and more like a full-speed sprint through 107 chapters. Entertaining? Yes. Fully fleshed out emotionally? Not quite.
THAT SAID… the intrigue? Very well done. There are enough secrets, danger, and unanswered questions woven through Iron Ridge to keep me hooked because now I need to know what’s really going on in this town. Dakota James definitely knows how to plant curiosity and keep readers invested for the long haul.
So while this one didn’t fully hit emotionally for me, I’m absolutely continuing the series because I can already tell the bigger picture is going to get messy, dangerous, and addictive.
Thank you to Grey’s Promotions for the e-ARC, and congratulations to Dakota James on the release of Savage Rancher on May 21st.
Savage Rancher was the kind of dark cowboy romance that immediately pulls you in with tension, danger, and unfinished history.
Jake and Emma’s relationship already carried so much emotional weight because they weren’t just reconnecting after years apart — they were each other’s first love, and life completely tore them apart before they ever truly had a chance.
And honestly? That history made every interaction between them feel even more intense.
Jake was protective before leaving town, but after becoming special forces, that protective streak became even darker and more dangerous in the best morally gray way possible. He’s absolutely the type of MMC who will burn the world down for the woman he loves.
Emma’s journey stood out to me too because she comes back to the ranch after losing her father and leaving behind a marriage that never truly gave her love or happiness. Watching her slowly reconnect with herself, her photography, and the feelings she buried for years added emotional depth beyond just the romance.
The dark atmosphere throughout the book worked really well. There’s danger constantly lingering underneath the ranch setting, and it gave the story a gritty tension that kept me hooked.
The chemistry between Jake and Emma never felt forced because underneath everything — the years apart, the pain, the betrayal, and the danger — there was still love there.
And honestly, once the story picked up, it became really hard to put down.
If you enjoy: 🤠 Dark cowboy romance 🖤 Morally gray MMCs 🔥 Second chance romance ⚔️ Protective ex-military hero 🌙 High stakes danger & suspense 💔 First love reconnecting years later ✨ Emotional tension with darker themes
then this is definitely worth picking up.
⭐️ 4/5 🔥 4/5 🌶️ 3.5/5 💧 3.5/5
Thank you to Grey’s Promo and Dakota James for the ARC opportunity. All opinions are my own.
I have a soft spot for dark cowboy romances... for me, cowboys are like the superheroes of the West... and Jake didn’t disappoint. And a superhero always has a strong woman by his side, one who doesn’t allow anyone to control her (not even the hero), and that is Emma. I loved her so much. So strong and talented... I’m all for dark MMCs, but I’m even more into strong, determined, smart FMCs, and this book offered exactly that. It was such a fun, fast read 👏🏻 Jake Callahan is a possessive, morally gray cowboy/rancher, and his background, military history, obsession, and protectiveness made him really interesting. He spent years watching Emma from afar, carrying the weight of what happened 18 years ago, and fate throws them back together right in the middle of danger, secrets, and threats surrounding the ranch. But Emma completely won me over 😭 Even though she still loved Jake and knew what made him leave, she never allowed him to control her decisions, and I loved that balance between them. Jake might have been obsessed with her, but Emma always stood her ground. The second chance romance was enjoyable, though I do think a little more angst and emotional tension was needed before they fully got back together because it felt like the last 18 years barely happened... Still, the chemistry was there, the suspense kept things entertaining, and the darker atmosphere mixed with the ranch setting made it really intersting. If you enjoy dark cowboy romances with possessive heroes, danger, second chances, forced proximity, and a touch of vigilante energy, this one is worth picking up 🤠🔥
Savage Rancher is a dark romance, “A love story forged in danger.”
Welcome to Iron Ridge. If you are looking for a story with sunshine and rainbows, then you will be clutching your pearls throughout this whole story.
Savage Rancher is full of touch her and die, morally gray, protective hero, forced proximity, he falls first, and found family tropes. If you're still here, then buckle up because this story is full of danger, tension, mystery, family, and love with lots of spice.
The tension between Jake and Emma is sizzling, especially after it has been simmering for the past eighteen years. Jake. Jake is a man obsessed and maybe a little feral. Emma has always loved Jake and now that he is home, she will risk herself to keep him safe. She may also be a little feral.
The small town of Iron Ridge holds secrets, dangerous secrets and Emma quickly becomes a target. Jake's friends are family and I love how they accept Emma and are willing to stand with Jake to protect her by any means necessary.
I loved this story. Everything. The emotions. The danger. The obsession The control. The hard choices. The love.
If you like your story with unhinged characters who cross lines to protect their loved ones, then this story is for you. Don't make other plans because when you start reading, you will not be able to put this story down. I'm eager to get my hands on book 2, Broken Outlaw, Maison's story, which is coming in June.
I received an ARC of Savage Rancher. This is my voluntary honest review and all opinions are my own.
Savage Rancher is a dark cowboy romance centered around Jake Callahan, a former war hero who returns to the small town of Iron Ridge carrying years of obsession, guilt, and unresolved feelings for Emma Hayes — the woman he’s loved from a distance for years.
His true reason for being back is Emma even though her father chased him away for being from the wrong side of town - Jake joins the army and stays away.
But Jake has been watching over her for a long time. He keeps his distance believing his violent past and dangerous nature will ruin her life, but emotionally he never let her go.
Emma is also back after her father’s sudden passing & a divorce from a man she never loved. Her & Jake’s chemistry is as intense as it was when they were teenagers, crossing a dangerously possessive line they don’t want hold off on anymore.
Now that he’s back, with his 2 best special forces brothers in arms, nothing will stand in his way. There’s no line he wouldn’t cross to protect her or the ones he loves.
I mean a dark cowboy romance with a side possessiveness & 2 fierce army best friends is everything I didn’t know I was missing!
This one just oozes sexy, dominant and touch her & die vibes I haven’t been reading much of lately. It’s been a real treat to dip into Dakota’s world & I can’t wait to read more! Iron Ridge & its men definitely had me hot & bothered.
Eighteen years ago, Jake was run off by Emma’s father, and he’s been pining for her ever since. The moment Jake learns of her dad’s death, he moves back home. He and his special ops brethren buy a ranch, and he sets out to make Emma his again.
This is classified as a dark romance, but personally, I’d describe it as a passionate romance with fiercely protective instincts and a darker plotline. The love between them never felt dark to me.
I’d say this book is a 50/50 spice-to-plot ratio. The spice is definitely there and completely fueled by passion. I loved how Emma boldly accepts her “punishment” while still flipping the script at the same time. The plot is genuinely intriguing, and I’m excited to see the bigger backstory unfold in future books… especially after that added POV 👀
One of my favorite details was how quickly the guys switch into special ops/tactical mode. Their entire demeanor and verbiage change as they calmly assess threat levels, potential problems, advantages, and outcomes.
At first, I thought this might turn into an RH situation, but the setup for the other guys’ future books was done perfectly.
Let me tell you right now Dakota James has got a masterpiece on their hands. Savage rancher is book one in the iron ridge series. Let me tell you a dark romance mixed with cowboys that have morally gray characteristics and have a IDGAF attitude is exactly how I would describe this book. Jake Callahan was absolutely in love with Emma Hayes. 18 years before they were reunited Emma's father ran Jake off. Things happen Jake comes back but he don't come back to his hometown for nothing he comes back for Miss Emma. The compatibility between these two is fire then something bad happens and Emma not threatened and that's when Jake stepped in. I stated in the blurb which was my favorite, "Jake isn’t the kind of man who lets things go. He’s the kind who handles them—quietly. Permanently. Because Emma was never just someone he wanted. She has always been his. And anyone who touches her? He’ll burn the world down to make sure they regret it." Let me tell you he didn't disappoint. This was just a phenomenal book The Way Jake was with Emma and the way he was with his friends it was just a very beautiful book. The chemistry Between the characters were absolutely phenomenal just wonderful. Overall this was a great book I could not wait for the second one in this series Savage rancher was just phenomenal this is going to be something that keeps me hooked for a long time.
This is the first book i have read from Dakota James. Small town cowboy romance. Not so Second chance romance as there is absolutely no groveling. Super overprotective possessive cowboy.
There is no yearning. It’s not a slow burn as Jake and Emma commit their love to each other in the 2nd chapter itself (they have met a day before for first time after 18 years)
Its not ‘i will get her back’ but ‘i have her back no questions asked as i am back now. Just have to protect her from everything and everyone literally.
He is literally her shadow. Killing people for her. Totally obsessed with her.
The whole book is about is him looking out for her. But i found him a bit over the top controlling. He didn’t give her option whether she wants to start a family. He just told her its gonna happen. Didn’t propose marriage kind of gave her the ring and thats it.
He came back after 18 years and started treating her like his property from day 1. That didnt sit well. She loves her work but there is no conversation even till towards the end that how she is going to balance work and jake as he is soooo over protective.
Its an easy, spicy and quite predictable story. But emotional depth is missing. They just picked their relationship from where they left 18 years ago.
So if you are into spice and overbearing cowbow hero, go for it.
*Ex-military *Second chance *Small town *Tension *Set in a ranch *Touch her and die *Morally gray
It was raw, it was unhinged, it was intense! Author gave a warning in the beginning but I didn't pay much attention. I was wrong people, wrong! I don't think I've read such an intense story before. The way it was written was unprecedented to me and I LOVED it! The story by itself is enough for the tension but it's written in a way that makes this tension tenfold. Words are poor to describe how my heart was racing all through it. Heroine, Emma, comes back to her hometown and her ranch after her father's untimely death. Hero, Jake, comes back after 18 years to claim back his only love, Emma, and to protect her from threats that arised. I loved how Emma is strong and fierce and protective not to Jake but the whole team. And I loved how Jake was OTT possessive and obsessive about Emma to the point that becomes unhealthy. Thank God it's fiction and I can enjoy it without guilt. Jake and his pals are the kind of men you want on your side when threats are becoming close enough to be lethally dangerous. I really can't wait to read the rest of the stories for the other two. I received this arc and this is my honest opinion.
I devoured this book in one sitting and honestly could not put it down. Savage Rancher had everything I love in a dark cowboy romance — spice, tension, secrets, danger, mystery, and characters that completely pulled me in.
Jake is obsessed, protective, possessive, and just the right amount of unhinged 😮💨🖤 A morally gray cowboy hero who would burn the world down for the woman he loves? YES PLEASE. The way he constantly made sure Emma was safe had me swooning the entire time.
Emma is independent, strong, and more than capable of holding her own. She’s the perfect match for Jake, and their chemistry was intense, emotional, and impossible to look away from. I loved watching their relationship grow through all the chaos and danger surrounding them.
The story was fast-paced, addictive, and kept me hooked the whole way through. This was such a strong start to the Iron Ridge series, and I cannot wait to read the next book.
If you love:
🖤 Morally gray heroes 🖤 Protective/obsessive MMCs 🖤 Forced proximity 🖤 Small town secrets 🖤 “Touch her and ☠️” energy 🖤 Dark western romance
…then you definitely need to read this one.
Thank you to Dakota James and Grey’s Promo for the gifted ARC!
"A moment of recognition. That shift in a person's entire world when he sees someone who matters."
Jake has returned, along with a couple of his army buddies, to reclaim what is his.
Emma
Imagine the love of your life, who had up and left you without even saying goodbye, suddenly reappearing a decade later as your new neighbor? Now add on the fact that he is still as scrumptious as ever, and he still loves you. Possibly even to the point of obsession? Choices…
This is one of those reads that feels short, though it really wasn’t I devoured this in a sitting. It is packed with all the things that keep me turning pages. Suspense. Second Chances. Make your skin crawl, villains who will go to any length to get what they want. Bad boy, good guys that light up all those warning lights 😉 Steam ♨ Lots of steam Twisty bends in the tale that leave you edgy. Secrets And a whole lot more
As for dark… I suppose that will be different for each reader; it does have some sensitive topics/triggers.
Overall, a solid start to the series. However, there were some areas I would have liked a bit more detail. I also have some questions, but I think they will be answered as the series continues.
Well, this one starts out hot and heavy! We’re gonna get straight into it with a dead body and a mutual claiming. Said claiming is public. In private, it is indecently hot. Worth the read just for these scenes. I could totally skip the one or two sentence chapters. They are thoughts in one person’s head and the story may be better without them as they were more distracting than informative. I also feel like Jake and Emma‘s connection is based solely on their experience as children; we don’t really see much change in their relationship when they meet as adults. I would’ve liked to see more character growth in that regard. Did I mention that the spice is super spicy? Because whoa! If you like a dominant man and a woman who’s not afraid to stand up to him, this book is for you. If you like the promise of more books after this one, this book is for you. if you like small town, childhood friends to lovers reacquainted, this book is for you. If you like an element of danger, this book is for you. I was so lucky to receive this as an arc, and I’m leaving an honest review.
Savage Rancher by Dakota James Book 1 in the Iron Ridge series
Tropes Cowboy Romance Morally Gray MMC Second Chance Forced Proximity Small Town Romance Possessive / Protective ex military MMC Romantic Suspense
Jake and Emma were high school sweethearts. Jake was forced out of town by Emma’s father. Jake went on to join the military and later retired. Eighteen long years later Jake is coming home to Iron Ridge. Emma’s POS father is deceased and she is divorced from her husband. Emma and Jake could peel paint with how tight the tension is between them. It was like 18 hours had passed not eighteen years. Jake and Emma were each others first loves and the way the book reads to me they were each others first loves only true love. There is danger, suspense, betrayal and so much love within the pages. This is a fast paced story that I read in one sitting. This was my first book by Dakota James and I can’t wait to get the rest of the series.
i didn’t like this 🥴 this is second chance and miscommunication was the reason for the original “break up”. during their time apart, Jake joins the military and then special forces and Emma gets married to someone else. now it’s 18 years later, Emma is divorced and Jake is out of the military. both move back to their hometown and as soon as they see each other, it’s like the past disappeared and they are back together instantly
this has SO much spice. it felt like every other chapter was either them hooking up and them thinking about hooking up. which is fine if that’s your jam, it’s just not for me.
I also really don’t like the preface for the rest of the series.. the last chapter is from Cole’s POV and to insinuate that Jake and his friends are going to be forced into working with him??? actually insane, they were already planning to kill Cole so it doesn’t really make sense.
-dark cowboy romance -touch her and die -second chance -forced proximity -he falls first -boy obsessed -protective MMC -found family
This book absolutely wrecked me in the best way possible. Jake is unhinged — like full protective alpha with a darker side that should have had me questioning my life choices… and yet I was obsessed from the first chapter. The tension, the possessiveness, the “touch her and die” energy? Elite.
There were multiple moments where I literally thought, “I shouldn't like this but I DO,” and honestly I’ve made peace with it. The chemistry between the characters was intense, emotional, and completely addictive. Jake walks that fine line between terrifying and irresistible, and somehow the author makes it work flawlessly.
Also… I needed a minute after certain scenes. If you know, you KNOW. The spice was next level, but what really got me was how emotionally invested I became. Beneath all the darkness and chaos was a love story that hit hard.
If you love morally gray men, obsessive devotion, high tension romance, and a hero who would burn the world down for her, this one delivers.
I read this as an ARC from Greys Promo and Dakota and all opinions are my own.
I honestly finished this book in a couple hours because once I picked it up I could not put it down. This is a fast paced, small town, second chance romance where the FMC's ex/friend returns to their small hometown after he gets out of the military and her father recently passed away. Some other tropes are he falls first and harder, and there are stalking elements as well as mafia/organized crime connections woven in to the story as well. Jake (the MMC) never forgot about Emma (the FMC) and he will do anything to protect her, with the help of his buddies who he just so happened to convince to move back home with him.
The three men are ex military/special ops guys so that tells you everything you need to know about how far they are willing to go to protect their people. I can't wait to see what Dakota does with the rest of this series because there are already at least two other couples I have forming in my head and can't wait to see what shenanigans the guys get up to.
Savage Rancher; where do I even begin?! 🔥 This was my first time reading anything by Dakota James and she nailed it! Perfection!! Bravo!! Chef’s kiss!! 😘 👏 I am absolutely feral for this book in the best way ever!! I have read hundreds of books and this one takes top shelf priority!! 🙌🏻 When I tell you I was absolutely mind blown/stunned/in awe…there’s not enough words to describe this book! ‼️ If you like your men a little bit rough around the edges and dark but will go to the ends of the earth to protect you and sweep you up off your feet; this is that! 🖤 If you like a book that after certain scenes you have to take a minute and you think to yourself you need to go to church or get right with the lord; this is that! 🌶️ If you like dark cowboy romances; this is that! 🤠 And warning, you WILL BE left stunned, shocked, and left on the edge wanting more!! 🔥 I need Book 2 like yesterday! I can already tell you I will be obsessed with that one too! I need more of this story!!! 😳
Savage Rancher was the most addictive book I have read this year . This was a fast moving story that did not disappoint and I devoured it so quickly. Dakota wrote an extremely addictive book that leaves me craving for more. Emma and Jake’s story worked so well and I loved that we got a little knowledge from the past to understand that she truly was his all along. Emma is such a strong woman and even though she may push shows Jake’s buttons or keep secrets , they make a great team! With Jake’s protective swoon and Emma wanting to protect Jake, it’s clear they are each other’s. Together they make a dynamic duo with Mason and Luke also making it a enjoyable read. I can’t wait for more in this series and to see were things will go with all of the characters. I highly recommend this book to all the cowboy romance readers and army romance readers , there is something for all in this book and you will definitely be craving more once you finish.
Savage Rancher was such a fun dark cowboy romance with the perfect mix of danger, spice, suspense, and possessive energy. Jake Callahan is absolutely the kind of MMC who walks into a room and immediately takes control, and once Emma is threatened? Game over for everyone else.
I really enjoyed the second chance aspect between Jake and Emma and how fast everything reignites once he comes back home. Their chemistry was intense from the start, and the forced proximity mixed with all the danger made this ridiculously easy to binge.
The short chapters kept the pacing super quick, and I flew through this book wanting to know what would happen next. Add in morally gray cowboy vibes, protective mercenary energy, and a man fully ready to burn the world down for his woman, and I was hooked.
This was my first book by Dakota James and I’m definitely interested in continuing the series.
Savage Ranger is a dark romance that blurs the lines between love, possession, and control. Jake is completely obsessed with Emma and would cross any line for her. His intensity and overwhelming need for her will have you squirming the entire time.
Yes, it’s over the top—but beneath it all is a fierce need to protect. Emma stands her ground and never backs down from the violence surrounding them. And honestly, who wouldn’t find it sexy when a man is willing to kill for you?
I really enjoyed the camaraderie and banter between the guys, along with the unwavering loyalty they share.
Danger constantly circles them, slow and deliberate, always watching and waiting in the background, keeping the tension alive throughout which continues onto the next book.
Dark, dangerous, spicy, and undeniably entertaining.
