This classic book on the Japanese art of fish printing known as Gyotaku gives information on 32 of the most commercially important fish and shellfish families. There is at least one full-page Gyotaku fish print for each family. It also includes background on fish structure, biology, ecology, and commercial fishing for each family. This is a jointly produced reprint by Sea Challengers, Inc. and North Atlantic Books.
This book is the product of a person who worked for the Sea Grant program in California for many years but who also became accomplished at fish prints ("gyotaku "), an artistic method of actually ink-printing whole fish on special paper. The book is therefore an unusual combination of beautiful art with detailed scientific and economic information about each family or species -- along with some cooking tips, a glossary, and an explanation of the artist's techniques.
